| 1 | Clinical approaches to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)ranges from simple steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH),leading to fibrosis and potentially cirrhosis,and it is one of the most common causes of liver disease worldwide.NAFLD is associated with other medical conditions such as metabolic syndrome,obesity,cardiovascular disease and diabetes.NASH can only be diagnosed through liver biopsy,but noninvasive techniques have been developed to identify patients who are most likely to have NASH or fibrosis,reducing the need for liver biopsy and risk to patients.Disease progression varies between individuals and is linked to a number of risk factors.Mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis are associated with diet and lifestyle,influx of free fatty acids to the liver from adipose tissue due to insulin resistance,hepatic oxidative stress,cytokines production,reduced very low-density lipoprotein secretion and intestinal microbiome.Weight loss through improved diet and increased physical activity has been the cornerstone therapy of NAFLD.Recent therapies such as pioglitazone and vitamin E have been shown to be beneficial.Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and statins may offer additional benefits.Bariatric surgery should be considered in morbidly obese patients.More research is needed to assess the impact of these treatments on a long-term basis.The objective of this article is to briefly review the diagnosis,management and treatment of this disease in order to aid clinicians in managing these patients. | Katherine JP Schwenger Johane P Allard | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,7: | 21 |
| 2 | Ecological and Economic Benefits of Vegetation Management Measures in Citrus Orchards on Red Soils显示文摘A three-year experiment was conducted to investigate and compare the economic and ecological benefits of six types of vegetation management measures in citrus orchards of the hilly red soil region of the eastern part of China.Six vegetation treatments,including tillage without herbicide(clean tillage)and no tillage without herbicide(sod culture) and with herbicide paraquat(paraquat),glyphosate(glyphosate),glyphosate-glyphosate-paraquat(G-G-P),and paraquat- paraquat-glyphosate(P-P-G),were applied in the citrus orchards on a clayey red soil with slopes of 8°and 13°and a sandy soil with slope of 25°.The results showed that the sod culture,paraquat,glyphosate,G-G-P,and P-P-G treatments reduced surface runoff by 38.8%,42.5%,18.7%,28.7%,and 37.5%,then the soil-water losses by 55.5%,51.7%,39.9%,46.8%, and 50.0%,and the N,P,and K nutrient losses by 60.3%,50.2%,37.0%,41.8%,and 45.4%,respectively,as compared with the clean tillage treatment.The weed regeneration ratios with the treatments of clean tillage without herbicide,paraquat, glyphosate,G-G-P,and P-P-G were reduced by 55.1%,67.2%,30.3%,36.8%,and 51.2%,respectively,as compared with the sod culture.The sod culture,paraquat,glyphosate,G-G-P,and P-P-G treatments could increase the soil fertility (annual accumulation of N,P,K,and OM)by 7.1%,6.9%,5.3%,6.2%,and 6.6%,respectively,whereas the clean tillage treatment without herbicide reduced soil fertility by 4.4% after the three-year experiment.The citrus fruit yields in the treatments of paraquat,glyphosate,G-G-P,and P-P-G increased by 7%-10%;the soluble solid,total sugar,total acidity,sugar-acid ratio,and single fruit weight of citrus fruits of all treatments except sod culture significantly(P>0.05) exceeded that of the clean tillage treatment.In general,the paraquat treatment showed the best economic and ecological benefits among the six treatments;therefore,it could be regarded as the best available vegetation management measure in citrus orchards of hilly red soil region to retain water and soil,enhance soil fertility,and improve the yield and quality of citrus. | SHUI Jian-Guo WANG Qiu-Zhen LIAO Gen-Qing J. | 4 | Implication of the intestinal microbiome in complications of cirrhosis显示文摘The intestinal microbiome(IM) is altered in patients with cirrhosis,and emerging literature suggests that this impacts on the development of complications.The Pub Med database was searched from January 2000 to May 2015 for studies and review articles on the composition,pathophysiologic effects and therapeutic modulation of the IM in cirrhosis.The following combination of relevant text words and MeS H terms were used,namely intestinal microbiome,microbiota,or dysbiosis,and cirrhosis,encephalopathy,spontaneous bacterial peritonitis,hepatorenal syndrome,variceal bleeding,hepatopulmonary syndrome,portopulmonary hypertension and hepatocellular carcinoma.The search results were evaluated for pertinence to the subject of IM and cirrhosis,as well as for quality of study design.The IM in cirrhosis is characterized by a decreased proportion of Bacteroides and Lactobacilli,and an increased proportion of Enterobacteriaceae compared to healthy controls.Except for alcoholic cirrhosis,the composition of the IM in cirrhosis is not affected by the etiology of the liver disease.The percentage of Enterobacteriaceae increases with worsening liver disease severity and decompensation and is associated with bacteremia,spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and hepatic encephalopathy.Lactulose,rifaximin and Lactobacillus-containing probiotics have been shown to partial y reverse the cirrhosis associated enteric dysbiosis,in conjunction with improvement in encephalopathy.The IM is altered in cirrhosis,and this may contribute to the development of complications associated with end-stage liver disease.Therapies such as lactulose,rifaximin and probiotics may,at least partially,reverse the cirrhosisassociated changes in the IM.This,in turn,may prevent or alleviate the severity of complications. | Mamatha Bhat Bianca M Arendt Venkat Bhat Eberhard L Renner Atul Humar Johane P Allard | 2016 | World Journal of Hepatology2016,8,27: | 13 |

| 6 | Tetraphenylethylene-BODIPY aggregation-induced emission luminogens for near-infrared polymer light-emitting diodes显示文摘The aggregation-induced emission(AIE) phenomenon provides a new direction for the development of organic light-emitting devices. Here, we present a new class of emitters based on 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3 a,4 a-diaza-s-indacene(BODIPY), functionalized at different positions with tetraphenylethylene(TPE), which is one of the most famous AIE luminogens. Thanks to this modification, we were able to tune the photoluminescence of the BODIPY moiety from the green to the near-infrared(NIR)spectral range and achieve PL efficiencies of ~50% in the solid state. Remarkably, we observed an enhancement of the AIE and up to ~100% photoluminescence efficiencies by blending the TPE-substituted BODIPY fluorophores with a poly[(9,9-di-noctylfluorene-2,7-diyl)-alt-(benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazol-4,7-diyl)](F8 BT) matrix.
