| 6 | Analysis of the influence of groundwater and the stress regime on bolt behaviour in underground coal mines显示文摘The service failure of rock bolts and cable bolts are frequently reported issues in underground coal mines. Whilst numerous experimental investigations concerned with the service failure of bolts have been conducted, numerical modelling offers an alternative approach in evaluating the factors contributing to service failures of bolts in underground mines. In this study, analysis of the influence of groundwater and tensile stress on bolts in underground coal mines was studied through the numerical modelling of a grouted bolt in the immediate roadway roof. Bolt tensile stress and groundwater dripping rates in the immediate roadway roof were analysed using a package based on finite element method to assess the effect of coal roof thickness and claystone bands, as main contributors of known service failures of bolts in roadways of underground coal mines. Increasing coal roof thickness was found to increase bolt dripping rates. Probable location of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) occurrence was established through examining the shift and increase in maximum bolt tensile stress that was exhibited along the bolt length with increasing coal roof thickness. Claystone bands situated at the top and centre horizon of a grouted bolt produced lower bolt dripping rates compared with scenarios with no claystone bands. Intersecting claystone bands at the centre horizon of a bolt for a fully grouted bolt could increase the likelihood of SCC corrosion and bolt failure by contributing to microbial corrosion processes and grout fracturing by tensile stress. | 7 | Adaptive introductions:How multiple experiments and comparisons to wild populations provide insights into requirements for long-term introduction success of an endangered shrub显示文摘Recovery of an imperiled plant species may require augmentation of existing populations or creation of new ones.Hundreds of such projects have been conducted over the last few decades,but there is a bias in the literature favoring successes over failures.In this paper,we evaluate a series of introductions that experimentally manipulated microhabitat and fire in an adaptive introduction framework.Between 2002 and 2012,we(and our collaborators) carried out ten introductions and augmentations of Florida ziziphus Pseudoziziphus(Condalia,Ziziphus) celata,a clonal shrub limited to very small populations and narrowly endemic to pyrogenic central Florida sandhills.Six of the introductions were designed as experiments to test hypotheses about how demographic performance was affected by microhabitat,fire,and propagule type.Introduced transplants had high survival(<90%annually),inconsistent growth,and little transition to reproduction,while introduced seeds had low germination and survival.Transplants were more efficient than seeds as translocation propagules.Shaded(vs.open) sites supported generally higher transplant and seedling survival and seed germination percentages,but growth responses varied among experiments.Supplemental irrigation increased transplant survival and seed germination,but otherwise seedling and plant survival and growth were not significantly affected.Contrary to expectations based on wild populations,introduced propagules have not been more successful in unshaded sites,suggesting that Florida ziziphus has broader microhabitat preferences than hypothesized.Compared to wild plants,introduced plants had similar survival and responses to fire,slower growth,and more delayed flowering.Introduced plants had no clonal spread.While no introduced population has demonstrated a capacity for long-term viability,one augmented population has flowered and produced viable fruits.Given that Florida ziziphus genets are long-lived,low levels of sexual reproduction may be adequate for the establishment of viable populations.Thus,after many translocations over more than a decade,it is premature to characterize any single translocation as a success or a failure,underscoring the need for a long view of translocation success. | Eric S.Menges Stacy A.Smith Carl W.Weekley | 2016 | Plant Diversity2016,38,5: | 4 |

| 16 | Technological,environmental and biological factors:referent variance values for infrared imaging of the bovine显示文摘Background:Despite its variety of potential applications,the wide implementation of infrared technology in cattle production faces technical,environmental and biological challenges similar to other indicators of metabolic state.Nine trials,divided into three classes(technological,environmental and biological factors) were conducted to illustrate the influence of these factors on body surface temperature assessed through infrared imaging.Results:Evaluation of technological factors indicated the following:measurements of body temperatures were strongly repeatable when taken within 10 s;appropriateness of differing infrared camera technologies was influenced by distance to the target;and results were consistent when analysis of thermographs was compared between judges.Evaluation of environmental factors illustrated that wind and debris caused decreases in body surface temperatures without affecting metabolic rate;additionally,body surface temperature increased due to sunlight but returned to baseline values within minutes of shade exposure.Examination/investigation/exploration of animal factors demonstrated that exercise caused an increase in body surface temperature and metabolic rate.Administration of sedative and anti-sedative caused changes on body surface temperature and metabolic rate,and during late pregnancy a foetal thermal imprint was visible through abdominal infrared imaging.Conclusion:The above factors should be considered in order to standardize operational procedures for taking thermographs,thereby optimizing the use of such technology in cattle operations. | Yuri R.Montanholi Melissa Lim Alaina Macdonald Brock A.Smith Christy Goldhawk Karen Schwartzkopf-Genswein Stephen P.Miller | 2015 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2015,6,4: | 2 |
