Temporal and spatial comparisons of angiosperm diversity between eastern Asia and North America显示文摘Comparative approaches that examine floras with similar environments, but different diversity patterns, provide good opportunities to elucidate how uneven distributions of biodiversity were assembled. Eastern Asia(EA) and North America north of Mexico(NA;see definitions of EA and NA in Fig. S1 A) share similar geographical environments with comparable latitude, land area and climate. | Haihua Hu Jianfei Ye Bing Liu Lingfeng Mao Stephen A.Smith Russell L.Barrett Pamela S.Soltis Douglas E.Soltis Zhiduan Chen Limin Lu | 2022 | National Science Review2022,9,6: | 3
Plastome phylogenomic insights into the Sino-Japanese biogeography of Diabelia(Caprifoliaceae)显示文摘Understanding the causes of the Sino-Japanese disjunctions in plant taxa has been a central question in eastern Asian biogeography, with vicariance or long-distance dispersal often invoked to explain such patterns.Diabelia Landrein(Caprifoliaceae;Linnaeoideae)comprises four shrubby species with a Sino-Japanese disjunct distribution. The species diversification time within Diabelia, covering a long geological history of the formation process of the Sino-Japanese flora, dated back to the middle Oligocene, therefore,Diabelia would be an ideal model to elucidate the biogeographic patterns of Sino-Japanese disjunctions with climate fluctuation. In this study,we analyzed complete plastome sequence data for 28 individuals representing all four species of Diabelia. These 28 plastomes were found to be highly similar in overall size(156243-157578 bp),structure, gene order, and content. Our phylogenomic analysis of the plastomes supported a close relationship between Diabelia ionostachya(Nakai)Landrein&R.L.Barrett var.wenzhouensis(S.L.Zhou ex Landrein)Landrein from eastern China and Diabelia spathulata(Siebold&Zucc.)Landrein var.spathulata from Japan.Diabelia serrata(Siebold&Zucc.)Landrein was identified as sister to a population of Diabelia sanguinea(Makino)Landrein from Tochigi in central Japan and D.spathulata Landrein, from Toyama, central Japan. Most Diabelia lineages were estimated to have differentiated 8-28 Mya.Our results indicate that two independent vicariance events could explain the disjunction between Japan and Korea in the mid to late Miocene, and between Zhejiang and Japan in the early Miocene. | Hong-Xin Wang Michael J.Moore Russell L.Barrett Sven Landrein Shota Sakaguchi Masayuki Maki Jun Wen Hua-Feng Wang | 2020 | Journal of Systematics and Evolution2020,58,6: | 3
Global dispersal and diversification of the genus Schoenus (Cyperaceae) from the Western Australian biodiversity hotspot显示文摘The predominantly austral genus Schoenus L.is the largest genus in tribe Schoeneae and one of the ten most species-rich Cyperaceae genera, with over 150 accepted species found mostly in Australia,New Zealand, southeast Asia, and southern Africa. Here,we use data based on two nuclear and three plastid DNA regions to present one of the most comprehensive phylogenetic reconstructions of a genus in Cyperaceae to date, covering over 70%of described species of Schoenus. After recent taxonomic realignments in the last 4 years have both added and removed species from the genus,we show that Schoenus is now monophyletic. In addition, our results indicate that Schoenus originated in Western Australia in the Paleocene and eventually dispersed to surrounding continents, but rarely back. The diversification rate of the genus appears to have slightly decreased over time, and there has not been an increase associated with the establishment of the Cape clade endemic to the sclerophyllous fynbos vegetation type, such as has been reported in other plant lineages endemic to the Cape region. These results will serve as a template to understanding the complex patterns of genome size evolution and to untangle drivers of diversification in this genus. | Tammy L.Elliott Ruan van Mazijk Russell L.Barrett Jeremy J.Bruhl Simon Joly Ngalirendwe Muthaphuli Karen L.Wilson A.Muthama Muasya | 2021 | Journal of Systematics and Evolution2021,59,4: | 2
A new classification of Cyperaceae (Poales) supported by phylogenomic data显示文摘Cyperaceae(sedges)are the third largest monocot family and are of considerable economic and ecological importance.Sedges represent an ideal model family to study evolutionary biology due to their species richness, global distribution, large discrepancies in lineage diversity, broad range of ecological preferences, and adaptations including multiple origins of C4 photosynthesis and holocentric chromosomes.Goetghebeur′s seminal work on Cyperaceae published in 1998 provided the most recent complete classification at tribal and generic level, based on a morphological study of Cyperaceae inflorescence, spikelet, flower, and embryo characters, plus anatomical and other information.Since then, several family-level molecular phylogenetic studies using Sanger sequence data have been published. Here, more than 20 years after the last comprehensive classification of the family,we present the first family-wide phylogenomic study of Cyperaceae based on targeted sequencing using the Angiosperms353 probe kit sampling 311 accessions. In addition,62 accessions available from GenBank were mined for overlapping reads and included in the phylogenomic analyses.Informed by this backbone phylogeny,a new classification for the family at the tribal, subtribal, and generic levels is proposed. The majority of previously recognized suprageneric groups are supported, and for the first time,we establish support for tribe Cryptangieae as a clade including the genus Koyamaea. We provide a taxonomic treatment including identification keys and diagnoses for the 2 subfamilies,24 tribes, and 10 subtribes, and basic information on the 95 genera. The classification includes five new subtribes in tribe Schoeneae:Anthelepidinae,Caustiinae,Gymnoschoeninae,Lepidospermatinae, and Oreobolinae. | Isabel Larridon Alexandre R.Zuntini Étienne Léveillé-Bourret Russell L.Barrett Julian R.Starr AMuthama Muasya Tamara Villaverde Kenneth Bauters Grace E.Brewer Jeremy J.Bruhl Suzana M.Costa Tammy L.Elliott Niroshini Epitawalage Marcial Escudero Isabel Fairlie Paul Goetghebeur Andrew LHipp Pedro Jiménez-Mejías Izai ABSabino Kikuchi Modesto Luceño JoséIgnacio Márquez-Corro Santiago Martín-Bravo Olivier Maurin Lisa Pokorny Eric HRoalson Ilias Semmouri David A.Simpson Daniel Spalink WWayt Thomas Karen L.Wilson Martin Xanthos Félix Forest William J.Baker | 2021 | Journal of Systematics and Evolution2021,59,4: | 1
A comprehensive evaluation of flowering plant diversity and conservation priority for national park planning in China显示文摘Establishment of a national park protection system in China, including the latest target proposed to protect at least 30%of the land area, calls for a comprehensive exploration of conservation priorities incorporating multiple diversity facets. We herein evaluate the spatial distribution of Chinese flowering plants from the perspectives of richness, uniqueness, vulnerability, and evolutionary history,by integrating three mega-phylogenies and comprehensive distribution data.We detect significantly high consistency among hotspots of different diversity measures for Chinese flowering plants, suggesting that multiple facets of evolutionary diversity are concentrically distributed in China.Affording legal protection to these areas is expected to maximize positive conservation outcomes. We propose two integrative diversity indices by incorporating three richness-based and three phylogeny-based measures, respectively. Both methods identify areas with high species richness, but the integrative phylogeny-based index also locates key areas with ancient and unique evolutionary histories(e.g.,Ailao-Wuliang Mts,Dabie Mts,Hainan rainforest,Karst area of Yunnan-Guizhou-Guangxi,Nanling Mts,and southeast coastal regions).Of all the diversity indices explored, phylogenetic endemism maximizes the incidental protection of other indices in most cases, emphasizing its significance for conservation planning.Finally,42 priority areas are identified by combining the 5%-criterion hotspots of two integrative indices and the minimum area to protect all threatened species analyzed. These priorities cover only 13.3%of China's land area, but host 97.1%of species richness(23,394/24,095),96.5%of endemic species(11,841/12,274),100%of threatened species(2,613/2,613),and 99.3%of phylogenetic diversity for flowering plants involved in this study. These frameworks provide a solid scientific basis for national park planning in China. | Limin Lu Lina Zhao Haihua Hu Bing Liu Yuchang Yang Yichen You Danxiao Peng Russell L.Barrett Zhiduan Chen | 2023 | Fundamental Research2023,3,6: | 1
