| 1 | Cancer models in preclinical research:A chronicle review of advancement in effective cancer research显示文摘Cancer is a major stress for public well-being and is the most dreadful disease.The models used in the discovery of cancer treatment are continuously changing and extending toward advanced preclinical studies.Cancer models are either naturally existing or artificially prepared experimental systems that show similar features with human tumors though the heterogeneous nature of the tumor is very familiar.The choice of the most fitting model to best reflect the given tumor system is one of the real difficulties for cancer examination.Therefore,vast studies have been conducted on the cancer models for developing a better understanding of cancer invasion,progression,and early detection.These models give an insight into cancer etiology,molecular basis,host tumor interaction,the role of microenvironment,and tumor heterogeneity in tumor metastasis.These models are also used to predict novel can-cer markers,targeted therapies,and are extremely helpful in drug development.In this review,the potential of cancer models to be used as a platform for drug screening and therapeutic discoveries are highlighted.Although none of the cancer models is regarded as ideal because each is associated with essential caveats that restraint its application yet by bridging the gap between preliminary cancer research and transla-tional medicine.However,they promise a brighter future for cancer treatment. | Humna Sajjad Saiqa Imtiaz Tayyaba Noor Yusra Hasan Siddiqui Anila Sajjad Muhammad Zia | 2021 | Animal Models and Experimental Medicine2021,4,2: | 5 |
| 2 | Synergistic antibacterial effect of honey and Herba Ocimi Basilici against some bacterial pathogens显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of the combination of different honey brands and methanolic fraction of Herba Ocimi Basilici using agar well diffusion assay. METHODS: The antibacterial activity was determined against thirteen pathogenic bacterial clinical isolates including six gram negative(Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimirium, Xanthomonas campestris) and six gram positive strains(Enterococcus faecalis faecalis, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens type C, Clostridium perfringens type D, Clostridium chauvoei). Agar well diffusion method was used while zones of inhibition were measured with vernier scale. RESULTS: At higher concentration, all the honey brands showed good to significant activity. The highest activity was observed for Hamdard brand honey(27.60±0.40) against Enterococcus faecalis. | 19 | Risk profile and outcomes of aortic valve replacement in octogenarians显示文摘AIM: To investigate the patient characteristics, relationship between the Logistic EuroSCORE (LES) and the observed outcomes in octogenarians who underwent surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR). METHODS: Two hundred and seventy three octogenarians underwent AVR between 1996 and 2008 at Bristol Royal Inf irmary. Demographics, acute outcomes,length of hospital stay and mortality were obtained. The LES was calculated to characterize the predicted operative risk. Two groups were def ined: LES ≥ 15 (n = 80) and LES < 15 (n = 193). RESULTS: In patients with LES ≥ 15, 30 d mortality was 14% (95% CI: 7%-23%) compared with 4% (95% CI: 2%-8%) in the LES < 15 group (P < 0.007). Despite the increase in number of operations from 1996 to 2008, the average LES did not change. Only 5% of patients had prior bypass surgery. The LES identifi ed a low risk quartile of patients with a very low mortality (4%, n = 8, P < 0.007) at 30 d. The overall surgical results for octogenarians were excellent. The low risk group had an excellent outcome and the high risk group had a poor outcome after surgical AVR.
