| 1 | The role of maize root size in phosphorus uptake and productivity of maize/faba bean and maize/wheat intercropping systems显示文摘Interspecific root/rhizosphere interactions affect phosphorus (P) uptake and the productivity of maize/faba bean and maize/wheat intercropping systems. The aim of these experiments was to determine whether manipulation of maize root growth could improve the productivity of the two intercropping systems. Two near isogenic maize hybrids (the larger-rooted T149 and smaller-rooted T222) were intercropped with faba bean and wheat, under conditions of high- and low-P availability. The larger-rooted T149 showed greater competitive ability than the smaller-rooted T222 in both maize/faba bean and maize/wheat intercropping systems. The higher competitive ability of T149 improved the productivity of the maize/faba bean intercropping system in P-sufficient conditions. In maize/wheat intercropping systems, root growth, shoot biomass, and P uptake of maize were inhibited by wheat, regardless of the P-supply. Compared with T222, the larger-rooted T149 suffered less in the intercropping systems. The total biomass of the maize/wheat intercropping system was higher for wheat/T149 than for wheat/T222 under low-P conditions. These data suggested that genetic improvement of maize root size could enhance maize growth and its ability to compete for P resources in maize/faba bean and maize/wheat intercropping systems. | 4 | Vascularized bone regeneration accelerated by 3D-printed nanosilicate-functionalized polycaprolactone scaffold显示文摘Critical oral-maxillofacial bone defects,damaged by trauma and tumors,not only affect the physiological functions and mental health of patients but are also highly challenging to reconstruct.Personalized biomaterials customized by 3D printing technology have the potential to match oralmaxillofacial bone repair and regeneration requirements.Laponite(LAP)nanosilicates have been added to biomaterials to achieve biofunctional modification owing to their excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity.Herein,porous nanosilicate-functionalized polycaprolactone(PCL/LAP)was fabricated by 3D printing technology,and its bioactivities in bone regeneration were investigated in vitro and in vivo.In vitro experiments demonstrated that PCL/LAP exhibited good cytocompatibility and enhanced the viability of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(BMSCs).PCL/LAP functioned to stimulate osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs at the mRNA and protein levels and elevated angiogenic gene expression and cytokine secretion.Moreover,BMSCs cultured on PCL/LAP promoted the angiogenesis potential of endothelial cells by angiogenic cytokine secretion.Then,PCL/LAP scaffolds were implanted into the calvarial defect model.Toxicological safety of PCL/LAP was confirmed,and significant enhancement of vascularized bone formation was observed.Taken together,3D-printed PCL/LAP scaffolds with brilliant osteogenesis to enhance bone regeneration could be envisaged as an outstanding bone substitute for a promising change in oral-maxillofacial bone defect reconstruction. | Xiongcheng Xu Long Xiao Yanmei Xu Jin Zhuo Xue Yang Li Li Nianqi Xiao Jing Tao Quan Zhong Yanfen Li Yuling Chen Zhibin Du Kai Luo | 2021 | Regenerative Biomaterials2021,8,6: | 3 |
| 5 | Experimental Performance Evaluation and Artificial-Neural-Network Modeling of ZnO-CuO/EG-W Hybrid Nanofluids显示文摘The thermo-physical properties of nanofluids are highly dependent on the used base fluid.This study explores the influence of the mixing ratio on the thermal conductivity and viscosity of ZnO-CuO/EG(ethylene glycol)-W(water)hybrid nanofluids with mass concentration and temperatures in the ranges 1-5 wt.%and 25-60C,respectively.The characteristics and stability of these mixtures were estimated by TEM(transmission electron microscopy),visual observation,and absorbance tests.The results show that 120 min of sonication and the addition of PVP(polyvinyl pyrrolidone)surfactant can prevent sedimentation for a period reaching up to 20 days.The increase of EG(ethylene glycol)in the base fluid leads to low thermal conductivity and high viscosity.Thermal conductivity enhancement(TCE)decreases from 21.52%to 11.7%when EG:W is changed from 20:80 to 80:20 at 1 wt.%and 60C.A lower viscosity of the base fluid influences more significantly the TCE of the nanofluid.An Artificial Neural Network(ANN)has also been used to describe the effectiveness of these hybrid nanofluids as heat transfer fluids.The optimal number of layers and neurons in these models have been found to be 1 and 5 for viscosity,and 1 and 7 for thermal conductivity.The corresponding coefficient of determination(R^(2))was 0.9979 and 0.9989,respectively. | Yuling Zhai Long Li Zihao Xuan Mingyan Ma Hua Wang | 2022 | Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing2022,18,3: | 1 |
| 6 | A crosstalk between auxin and brassinosteroid regulates leaf shape by modulating growth anisotropy显示文摘Leaf shape is highly variable within and among plant species,ranging from slender to oval shaped.This is largely determined by the proximodistal axis of growth.However,little is known about how proximal–distal growth is controlled to determine leaf shape.Here,we show that Arabidopsis leaf and sepal proximodistal growth is tuned by two phytohormones.Two class A AUXIN RESPONSE FACTORs(ARFs),ARF6 and ARF8,activate the transcription of DWARF4,which encodes a key brassinosteroid(BR)biosynthetic enzyme.At the cellular level,the phytohormones promote more directional cell expansion along the proximodistal axis,as well as final cell sizes.BRs promote the demethyl-esterification of cell wall pectins,leading to isotropic in-plane cell wall loosening.Notably,numerical simulation showed that isotropic cell wall loosening could lead to directional cell and organ growth along the proximodistal axis.Taken together,we show that auxin acts through biosynthesis of BRs to determine cell wall mechanics and directional cell growth to generate leaves of variable roundness. | Yuanyuan Xiong Binbin Wu Fei Du Xiaolu Guo Caihuan Tian Jinrong Hu Shouqin Lii Mian Long Lei Zhang Ying Wang Yuling Jiao | 2021 | Molecular Plant2021,14,6: | 1 |

| 13 | An ARF24-ZmArf2 module influences kernel size in different maize haplotypes显示文摘Members of the ADP-ribosylation factor family,which are GTP-binding proteins, are involved in metabolite transport, cell division, and expansion.Although there has been a significant amount of research on small GTP-binding proteins, their roles and functions in regulating maize kernel size remain elusive. Here, we identified Zm Arf2 as a maize ADPribosylation factor-like family member that is highly conserved during evolution. Maize zmarf2 mutants showed a characteristic smaller kernel size. Conversely, ZmArf2 overexpression increased maize kernel size. Furthermore, heterologous expression of Zm Arf2 dramatically elevated Arabidopsis and yeast growth by promoting cell division. Using expression quantitative trait loci(e QTL) analysis, we determined that Zm Arf2 expression levels in various lines were mainly associated with variation at the gene locus. The promoters of Zm Arf2 genes could be divided into two types, p S and p L, that were significantly associated with both Zm Arf2 expression levels and kernel size. In yeast-one-hybrid screening, maize Auxin Response Factor 24(ARF24) is directly bound to the Zm Arf2 promoter region and negatively regulated Zm Arf2 expression.Notably, the p S and p L promoter types each contained an ARF24 binding element: an auxin response element(AuxRE) in p S and an auxin response region(Aux RR) in p L, respectively. ARF24binding affinity to Aux RR was much higher compared with Aux RE. | 15 | A new model for thermal conductivity of“continuous matrix/dispersed and separated 3D-particles”type composite materials and its application to WC-M(M=Co,Ag)systems显示文摘In the present work a new thermal conductivity model is developed for two-phase composite materials,which are consisted of a continuous matrix and dispersed 3 D-particles separated from each other by the matrix as a function of grain size and volume ratio of the dispersed particles at different temperatures.The model is applied to reproduce experimental thermal conductivity values of cemented carbide systems WC-Co and WC-Ag.Good agreement was found between measured thermal conductivity data originating from both this work and recent literature and the calculated ones only using semi-empirical parameters for the interfacial thermal resistance(ITR)values at WC/Co,WC/Ag and WC/WC interfaces as a function of temperature.Additionally,the temperature and grain size dependence of the thermal conductivity for WC is established for the first time.The model works well for the case when the matrix(Ag)has a higher thermal conductivity compared to that of the WC particles and also for the case when the matrix(Co)has a lower thermal conductivity compared to that of the WC particles.The new model forms a physically sound basis for further development/materials design of cemented carbides and particlereinforced composite materials. | Shiyi Wen Yong Du Jing Tan Yuling Liu Peng Zhou Jianzhan Long George Kaptay | 2022 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2022,,2: | 0 |
