| 1 | Salient region detection and segmentation for general object recognition and image understanding显示文摘General object recognition and image understanding is recognized as a dramatic goal for computer vision and multimedia retrieval. In spite of the great efforts devoted in the last two decades, it still remains an open problem. In this paper, we propose a selective attention-driven model for general image understanding, named GORIUM (general object recognition and image understanding model). The key idea of our model is to discover recurring visual objects by selective attention modeling and pairwise local invariant features matching on a large image set in an unsupervised manner. Towards this end, it can be formulated as a four-layer bottom-up model, i.e., salient region detection, object segmentation, automatic object discovering and visual dictionary construction. By exploiting multi-task learning methods to model visual saliency simultaneously with the bottom-up and top-down factors, the lowest layer can effectively detect salient objects in an image. The second layer exploits a simple yet effective learning approach to generate two complementary maps from several raw saliency maps, which then can be utilized to segment the salient objects precisely from a complex scene. For the third layer, we have also implemented an unsupervised approach to automatically discover general objects from large image set by pairwise matching with local invariant features. | 2 | SURFACE STRESS EFFECT IN MECHANICS OF NANOSTRUCTURED MATERIALS显示文摘This review article summarizes the advances in the surface stress effect in mechanics of nanostructured elements,including nanoparticles,nanowires,nanobeams,and nanofilms,and heterogeneous materials containing nanoscale inhomogeneities.It begins with the fundamental formulations of surface mechanics of solids,including the definition of surface stress as a surface excess quantity,the surface constitutive relations,and the surface equilibrium equations.Then,it depicts some theoretical and experimental studies of the mechanical properties of nanostructured elements,as well as the static and dynamic behaviour of cantilever sensors caused by the surface stress which is influenced by adsorption.Afterwards,the article gives a summary of the analytical elasto-static and dynamic solutions of a single as well as multiple inhomogeneities embedded in a matrix with the interface stress prevailing.The effect of surface elasticity on the diffraction of elastic waves is elucidated.Due to the difficulties in the analytical solution of inhomogeneities of complex shapes and configurations,finite element approaches have been developed for heterogeneous materials with the surface stress.Surface stress and surface energy are inherently related to crack propagation and the stress field in the vicinity of crack tips.The solutions of crack problems taking into account surface stress effects are also included.Predicting the effective elastic and plastic responses of heterogeneous materials while taking into account surface and interface stresses has received much attention.The advances in this topic are inevitably delineated.Mechanics of rough surfaces appears to deserve special attention due to its theoretical and practical implications.Some most recent work is reviewed.Finally,some challenges are pointed out.They include the characterization of surfaces and interfaces of real nanomaterials,experimental measurements and verification of mechanical parameters of complex surfaces,and the effects of the physical and chemical processes on the surface properties,etc. | Jianxiang Wang Zhuping Huang Huiling Duan Shouwen Yu Xiqiao Feng Gangfeng Wang Weixu Zhang Tiejun Wang | 2011 | Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica2011,24,1: | 11 |
| 3 | Advances in direct production of value-added chemicals via syngas conversion显示文摘Syngas conversion to fuels and chemicals is one of the most challenging subjects in the field of C1 chemistry. It is considered as an attractive alternative non-petroleum-based production route. The direct synthesis of olefins and alcohols as high value-added chemicals from syngas has drawn particular attention due to its process simplicity, low energy consumption and clean utilization of carbon resource, which conforms to the principles of green carbon science. This review describes the recent advances for the direct production of lower olefins and higher alcohols via syngas conversion. Recent progress in the development of new catalyst systems for enhanced catalytic performance is highlighted. | 5 | A CONDITIONAL RANDOM FIELDS APPROACH TO BIOMEDICAL NAMED ENTITY RECOGNITION显示文摘Named entity recognition is a fundamental task in biomedical data mining. In this letter, a named entity recognition system based on CRFs (Conditional Random Fields) for biomedical texts is presented. The system makes extensive use of a diverse set of features, including local features, full text features and external resource features. All features incorporated in this system are described in detail, and the impacts of different feature sets on the performance of the system are evaluated. In order to improve the performance of system, post-processing modules are exploited to deal with the abbrevia- tion phenomena, cascaded named entity and boundary errors identification. | 6 | Experimental investigation of a passive self-tuning resonator based on a beam-slider structure显示文摘This work investigates a self-tuning resonator composed of a slender clamped-clamped steel beam and a freely movable slider.The clamped-clamped beam exhibits hardening nonlinearity when it vibrates in large amplitude,providing a broad bandwidth of dynamic response.The moving slider changes the mass distribution of the whole structure,and provides a passive self-tuning approach for capturing the high-energy orbit of the structure.In the case without inclination,adequate inertial force that mainly depends on the vibration amplitude of the beam and the position of the slider can drive the slider to move from the side toward the centre of the beam.This movement amplifies the beam response when the excitation frequency is below 37 Hz in our prototyped device.In the multi-orbit frequency range(28-37 Hz),the self-tuning and magnification of beam response can be achieved when the slider is initially placed in an appropriate position on the beam.Once the beam is disturbed,however,the desired response in the high-energy orbit can be lost easily and cannot be reacquired without external assistance.In an improved design with a small inclination,the introduced small gravitational component enables the slider to move from the higher side toward the lower side when the beam amplitude is small.This property sacrifices the less efficient self-tuning region below 25 Hz,but can enable the beam to acquire and maintain the high-energy orbit response in the multi-orbit frequency range(28-39 Hz),which is resistant to disturbance.The proposed resonator in this paper not only broadens the frequency bandwidth of dynamic response,but also enables capture and maintenance of the high-energy orbit in a completely passive way.Such a passive self-tuning structure presents an advantage in the design of broadband vibration energy-harvesting systems. | Liuding Yu Lihua Tang Tiejun Yang | 2019 | Acta Mechanica Sinica2019,35,5: | 3 |
| 7 | Toward the Next Generation of Retinal Neuroprosthesis: Visual Computation with Spikes显示文摘A neuroprosthesis is a type of precision medical device that is intended to manipulate the neuronal signals of the brain in a closed-loop fashion,while simultaneously receiving stimuli from the environment and controlling some part of a human brain or body.Incoming visual information can be processed by the brain in millisecond intervals.The retina computes visual scenes and sends its output to the cortex in the form of neuronal spikes for further computation.Thus,the neuronal signal of interest for a retinal neuroprosthesis is the neuronal spike.Closed-loop computation in a neuroprosthesis includes two stages:encoding a stimulus as a neuronal signal,and decoding it back into a stimulus.In this paper,we review some of the recent progress that has been achieved in visual computation models that use spikes to analyze natural scenes that include static images and dynamic videos.We hypothesize that in order to obtain a better understanding of the computational principles in the retina,a hypercircuit view of the retina is necessary,in which the different functional network motifs that have been revealed in the cortex neuronal network are taken into consideration when interacting with the retina.The different building blocks of the retina,which include a diversity of cell types and synaptic connections-both chemical synapses and electrical synapses(gap junctions)-make the retina an ideal neuronal network for adapting the computational techniques that have been developed in artificial intelligence to model the encoding and decoding of visual scenes.An overall systems approach to visual computation with neuronal spikes is necessary in order to advance the next generation of retinal neuroprosthesis as an artificial visual system. | Zhaofei Yu Jian K.Liu Shanshan Jia Yichen Zhang Yajing Zheng Yonghong Tian Tiejun Huang | 2020 | Engineering2020,6,4: | 3 |
| 8 | Number of COVID-19 cases required in a population to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater in the province of Alberta, Canada:Sensitivity assessment显示文摘With a unique and large size of testing results of 1,842 samples collected from 12 wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) for 14 months through from low to high prevalence of COVID-19,the sensitivity of RT-qPCR detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater that correspond to the communities was computed by using Probit analysis.This study determined the number of new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population required to detect SARS-CoV-2RNA in wastewater at defined probabilities and provided an evidence-based framework of wastewater-based epidemiology surveillance (WBE).Input data were positive and negative test results of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater samples and the corresponding new COVID-19 case rates per 100,000 population served by each WWTP.The analyses determined that RT-qPCR-based SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection threshold at 50%,80%and 99%probability required a median of 8 (range:4-19),18 (9-43),and 38 (17-97) of new COVID-19 cases/100,000,respectively.Namely,the positive detection rate at 50%,80%and 99%probability were 0.01%,0.02%,and 0.04%averagely for new cases in the population.This study improves understanding of the performance of WBE SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection using the large datasets and prolonged study period.Estimated COVID-19 burden at a community level that would result in a positive detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is critical to support WBE application as a supplementary warning/monitoring system for COVID-19 prevention and control. | Qiaozhi Li Bonita E.Lee Tiejun Gao Yuanyuan Qiu Erik Ellehoj Jiaao Yu Mathew Diggle Graham Tipples Rasha Maal-Bared Deena Hinshaw Christopher Sikora Nicholas J.Ashbolt James Talbot Steve E.Hrudey Xiaoli Pang | 2023 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2023,,3: | 2 |

| 10 | Characterization of a full-length infectious clone of bovine foamy virus 3026显示文摘The biological features of most foamy viruses(FVs) are poorly understood, including bovine foamy virus(BFV). BFV strain 3026(BFV3026) was isolated from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of an infected cow in Zhangjiakou, China. A full-length genomic clone of BFV3026 was obtained from BFV3026-infected cells, and it exhibited more than 99% amino acid(AA) homology to another BFV strain isolated in the USA. Upon transfection into fetal canine thymus cells, the full-length BFV3026 clone produced viral structural and auxiliary proteins, typical cytopathic effects, and virus particles. | 19 | Linking the past and present to predict the distribution of Asian crested ibis(Nipponia nippon)under global changes显示文摘Understanding how species’ecological niches adapt to environmental changes through time is critical for predicting the effect of future global change on endangered species.Yet few studies have incorporated knowledge of past niche shifting into the assessment of species’future fate in a changing world.In this study,we integrated the ecological niche dynamics into the species distribution modeling of the Asian crested ibis(Nipponia nippon)in East Asia.Specifically,we compared historical and present ecological niches of crested ibis in four-dimensional environmental space based on species occurrence and environmental data.We then employed a multi-temporal ecological niche model to estimate the potential geographical distribution of crested ibis under future climate and land-use changes.Our results show that crested ibis retained similar though not identical ecological niches over time.Compared to the historical baseline range,the current suitable habitat for crested ibis has been reduced by 39.6%.The effects of human activity outweigh those of climate change regarding the distribution of crested ibis.We conclude that the ecological niche of crested ibis was tended to be conservative,and future potentially suitable habitat may encounter northeastward and northwestward shift,and possibly expand by 18.7%referred to the historical range.Thefindings of our study are of clear importance for the conservation and successful reintroduction of crested ibis in East Asia. | Fangyuan YU Yiwen SUN Tiejun WANG Andrew KSKIDMORE Changqing DING Xinping YE | 2022 | Integrative Zoology2022,17,6: | 1 |

This paper proposes a method which incorporates lexical information and wider context information into HMM. Model induction and related smoothing technique are presented in detail.
