Glutamate and depression: Reflecting a deepening knowledge of the gut and brain effects of a ubiquitous molecule显示文摘The versatility of glutamate as the brain’s foremost excitatory neurotransmitter and modulator of neurotransmission and function is considered common knowledge.Years of research have continued to uncover glutamate’s effects and roles in several neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression. It had been considered that a deeper understanding of the roles of glutamate in depression might open a new door to understanding the pathological basis of the disorder, improve the approach to patient management, and lead to the development of newer drugs that may benefit more patients. This review examines our current understanding of the roles of endogenous and exogenous sources of glutamate and the glutamatergic system in the aetiology, progression and management of depression. It also examines the relationships that link the gut-brain axis, glutamate and depression;as it emphasizes how the gut-brain axis could impact depression pathogenesis and management via changes in glutamate homeostasis. Finally,we consider what the likely future of glutamate-based therapies and glutamate-based therapeutic manipulations in depression are,and if with them,we are now on the final chapter of understanding the neurochemical milieu of depressive disorders. | Adejoke Yetunde Onaolapo Olakunle James Onaolapo | 2021 | World Journal of Psychiatry2021,11,7: | 3

Nutrition, nutritional deficiencies, and schizophrenia:An association worthy of constant reassessment显示文摘Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder that occurs worldwide, cutting across cultures, socioeconomic groups, and geographical barriers.Understanding the details of the neurochemical basis of schizophrenia, factors that contribute to it and possible measures for intervention are areas of ongoing research. However, what has become more evident is the fact that in targeting the neurochemical imbalances that may underlie schizophrenia, the type of response seen with currently available phamacotherapeutic agents does not provide all the answers that are needed. Therefore, the possible contribution of non-pharmacological approaches to schizophrenia management is worthy of consideration. In recent times, research is beginning to show nutrition may play a possibly significant role in schizophrenia, affecting its development, progression and management;however, while attempts had been made to examine this possible relationship from different angles, articles addressing it from a holistic point of view are not common. In this review,we examine existing scientific literature dealing with the possible relationship between nutrition and schizophrenia, with a view to elucidating the impact of diet, nutritional deficiencies and excesses on the aetiology, progression, management and outcome of schizophrenia.Secondly, the effect of nutritional supplements in prevention,as sole therapy,or adjuncts in schizophrenia management are examined. | Olakunle James Onaolapo Adejoke Yetunde Onaolapo | 2021 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2021,9,28: | 1

The hamster egg penetration test may decrease intracytoplasmic sperm injection utilization while maintaining high conventional fertilization rates显示文摘This was a cohort study of in vitro fertilization(IVF)subjects at the University of Utah,Salt Lake City(UT,USA)utilizing partner sperm.Cycles where both the hamster egg penetration test(HEPT)and semen analysis were performed within 2 years prior to IVF cycles were stratified into four groups based on a normal or an abnormal HEPT and morphology. The mean conventional and intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI)fertilization rates were calculated in each group. We performed a univariate analysis on the primary outcome comparing clinically interesting subjects. We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis of a policy of HEPT versus universal ICSI in couples with an abnormal morphology.Among patients with a normal HEPT,there was no difference in the mean conventional fertilization rates between those with a normal and an abnormal morphology. There was no difference in the mean conventional fertilization rates between subjects with a normal morphology without a hamster test and those with a normal HEPT without a morphology assessment. In 1000 simulated cycles with an abnormal morphology,a policy of HEPT was cost saving compared to universal ICSI,yet produced similar fertilization rates. The HEPT is similar to the World Health Organization edition 5(WHO-5)morphology in predicting successful conventional fertilization while allowing decreased utilization of ICSI.A policy of HEPT for males with abnormal morphology saves cost in selecting couples for a fertilization method. | Yetunde Ibrahim Brett Einerson Douglas T Carrell Benjamin R Emery Erica Johnstone | 2021 | Asian Journal of Andrology2021,23,1: | 1

Antidepressant-like potential of silymarin and silymarin-sertraline combination in mice:Highlighting effects on behaviour, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation显示文摘BACKGROUND Currently, there is increasing advocacy for the use of diet, dietary supplements, and herbal remedies in depression management.AIM To determine the antidepressant effects of standardized silymarin(SILY)extract either as a sole agent or as an adjunct in depression therapy.METHODS Adult mice were assigned into three main groups based on the neurobehavioural models;and each main group had ten treatment groups of 10 mice each.Treatment groups were:Vehicle control group, oral sertraline(SERT)group, two groups fed SILY)-supplemented diet(SILY at 140 and 280 mg/kg of feed,respectively),dexamethasone(DEX;i.p.)group,DEX/SERT group, two groups of DEX/SILY(SILY at 140 and 280 mg/kg of feed, respectively),and another two groups of(SERT/DEX/SILY)(SILY at 140 and 280 mg/kg of feed, respectively, plus i.p.DEX plus SERT).Duration of the study was 7 wk,and treatments were administered daily.RESULTS SILY(alone)increased body weight, open field locomotor activity, rearing, and grooming;it also enhanced spatial working memory while decreasing anxietyrelated behaviours and behavioural despair.SILY also improved antioxidant status while decreasing lipid peroxidation, acetylcholinesterase activity, and inflammatory markers.Neuronal integrity of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus was preserved.Overall, when administered alone or with SERT,SILY counteracted DEX-induced behavioural and biochemical changes while preserving neuromorphological integrity.CONCLUSION In conclusion,SILY is beneficial in mitigating DEX-induced central nervous system and other related changes in mice. | Adejoke Yetunde Onaolapo Hameed Sulaiman Anthony Tope Olofinnade Olakunle James Onaolapo | 2022 | World Journal of Pharmacology2022,11,3: | 0
Substance use and substance use disorders in Africa:An epidemiological approach to the review of existing literature显示文摘The relationship between man and substances that have abuse potentials, and whose use has been associated with the development or progression of substance use disorders has continued to evolve in terms of geography, economic implications, and time.History shows that local plants with psychoactive constituents can get exported worldwide through global travel, commerce,or even conquest.Time and globalization also change people’s relationship with substances of abuse;hence,an area that was initially alien to certain substances might evolve to becoming a trafficking hub,and then a destination.A case in point is Africa where a rapidly increasing prevalence of substance use/abuse and substance use disorder among adolescents and young adults is putting enormous strain on the economy, healthcare system, and society at large. However, there appears to be a paucity of scientific literature and data on the epidemiology, risk assessment, and contributing factors to substance use and the development of substance use disorders across Africa. In this narrative review,we examine extant literature(PubMed,Google scholar,Medline)for information on the prevalence, trends, and influencers of substance use and the development of substance use disorders. This is with a view of understanding the determinants of substance use and factors that influence the development of substance use disorders in the region, and how this information can be channeled towards developing a comprehensive intervention and treatment program. | Olakunle James Onaolapo Anthony Tope Olofinnade Foluso Olamide Ojo Olufunto Adeleye Joshua Falade Adejoke Yetunde Onaolapo | 2022 | World Journal of Psychiatry2022,12,10: | 0
Financial Inclusion in Nigeria:A Gender Gap Approach显示文摘Ability to have access and use financial goods and services such as bank and mobile money accounts indicates the overall financial inclusion level of an economy and the higher the indices are in any economy, the better that economy is.Financial inclusion is important to realize inclusive growth in any country. It has direct impacts on the level of growth and development experienced by any economy. It can however,be skewed along gender lines as noticed overtime in the Nigerian economy and other developing economies. This study examined financial inclusion in Nigeria:a gender gap approach. It also determined the factors responsible for the gender gaps. The Global Findex(2014)dataset of Nigeria from World Bank database was used to analyse the aims of the study. In the study,61% of the men were financially included, while only 43% of the female were financially included, with 18% gap.The gap in endowments accounted for the huge difference of the gap in outcomes as males seemed to be more naturally favoured by society than females. The level of education, wealth quintile, saved in past 12 months for farm/business purposes, sent domestic remittances in the past 12 months, paid utility bills in the past 12 months, and received wage payments in the past 12 months are the factors explaining the gender gaps in Nigeria. Thus the government and other relevant stakeholders should encourage females along these factors. | Wagbafor Marx O. | 12 | Liming and Fertilizer Potentials of Some Underutilized Plant Materials in Southwestern Nigeria显示文摘Soil acidification and phosphorus deficiency are a major constraint to crop production in tropical soils.Use of conventional liming materials is associated with some limitations viz:inability to solely improve nitrogen and available phosphorus in soils, loss of soil organic carbon and soil aggregate stability.Liming and fertilizer potentials of leaves from three plant materials(Tithonia diversifolia(TL),Imperata cylindrica(SG)and Gliricidia sepium(GL))widely growing in Ogbomoso, southwest Nigeria, were tested under incubation condition. Each of the plant material was applied at the rate of 10 t·hm^(-2) with and without 50%concentration of NPK 15:15:15-urea mix in 500 g acidic soil.Sole lime applied at 1 t·hm^(-2),sole NPK 15:15:15 applied at 60 kg·hm^(-2) mixed with urea at 60 kg N·hm^(-2) and an unamended soil were compared in completely randomized design in three replicates. The treated soils were incubated for 12 weeks.Thereafter, maize seeds were raised in each pot for a period of 3 weeks.Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance.Regression analysis was used to predict contributions of increased soil p H in plant material treated soils to exchangeable Al,H,dry root weight of maize and available phosphorus. Results indicated that sole plant materials were the order SG>TL>GL significantly(p<0.05)reduced exchangeable acidity compared to unamended and sole NPK.Sole NPK had the highest exchangeable acidity(4.7 cmol·kg^(-1))compared to unamended soil(3.3 cmol·kg^(-1))and sole lime(2.7 cmol·kg^(-1)).Application of sole Tithonia diversifolia increased available phosphorus by 214%and 97%compared to unamended and sole NPK treated soils respectively.Sole plant materials increased maize root weight by 33%compared to sole NPK.Increasing soil p H at harvesting in plant material treated soils significantly reduced exchangeable H and A_1.Soil p H was responsible for up to 33%and 53%reductions in exchangeable Al and H,respectively. This culminated into up to 22%increases in dry root weight of maize seedling.Present results showed ability of the plant materials tested to ameliorate soil acidity and improved soil available phosphorus. The plant materials should be explored for using as green manure and composting feedstock. It will go a long way to reduce high dosage use of conventional liming and fertilizer materials on acidic nutrient degraded soils. | Oyeyiola Yetunde Bunmi Ewetola Esther Abosede Olatunji Olayinka Olakunle Ayanleke Abraham | 2017 | Journal of Northeast Agricultural University(English Edition)2017,24,3: | 0
Profitability Level and Determinants of Tea Intercropping in Taraba State显示文摘Intercropping involves the cultivation of more than one crop on a plot of land at a particular time.Tea intercropping with other crops can increase the profitability of farmers and the development of tea plants. The study estimated the profitability level of intercropped tea farms and determined the factors affecting the profitability of tea intercropping systems in the study area.Information was obtained from two hundred and four tea farmers using a well-structured questionnaire. The analytical techniques used in the study were descriptive analysis and linear regression. The results revealed that the majority(95.6%)of the farmers are from Kakara and Nyiwa towns. There are few(2.9%)women involved in tea farming in Taraba State.29%of the tea farmers are young less than 30 years and old above 60 years.Fifteen percent of the farmers are single,83.8%are married and 1.5%are divorced.About 40%of the tea farmers had no formal education,21%have between 1-6 years of education,19%had 7-12 years of education and 21%had greater than 12 years of education. The gross margin is N289,900,581.9 and the gross margin per farmer is N1,421,081.28.The net income is N2,879,055,533.3 and the net income per farmer is N1,411,301.63.The amount of profit tea farmers make in Taraba State is N1,425,001 and the profit per farmer is N6,985.30.Labour costs(weeding, pruning, application of insecticide, watering)and cost of materials(cutlass, file, chemical, bag and others)are significant determinants of the profit level of the tea intercropping system in Taraba State.Tea intercropping farming is profitable in Taraba State Nigeria. | Oladokun Yetunde O.M Oluyole Kayode A. | 2023 | Macro Management & Public Policies2023,5,2: | 0

Preparation and evaluation of colon targeted drug delivery systems for albendazole using kneading, extrusion and compaction technology显示文摘Albendazole is an orally administered broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic used against helminthiasis, hydatid cyst disease and neurocysticercosis. The objectives of this investigation are to develop a sustained release drug delivery system for albendazole, and to target its delivery to colon.Albendazole matrix tablets containing varying proportions of single and binary blends of four polymers;polyacrylic acid(carbopol 971),ethylcellulose(Etcell),eudragit L100-55(EUD),and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) were prepared by a modified wet granulation technique of kneading, extrusion and compaction. In vitro release profiles of albendazole was sequentially determined in simulated gastric fluid(SGF),simulated intestinal fluid(SIF) without enzymes and in rat caecal content medium(RCCM) at 37 ℃.The in vitro drug release from matrix tablets containing CMC and Etcell as single polymers showed initial burst effect in the first 2 h(>20% and 50% respectively),followed by a slow release in SIF.However, matrix tablets containing polymer blends showed that no appreciable drug release occurred up to 5 h.Drug release from tablets containing polymer blends in the dissolution medium containing rat caecal material suddenly increased to ≥30% after 5 h(RCCM),and reaching up to 90% in 24 h.Albendazole matrix tablets containing carbopol 971,Etcell,EUD,and CMC as single polymers and as blends were formulated for oral use.Drug release from the tablet matrices containing carbopol alone, binary blends of carbopol/Etcell,and CMC/EUD were found to be very slow and dependent on polymer concentration.Matrix tablets containing blends of these polymers formulated using kneading, extrusion and compaction technique could provide sustained drug release and can be utilized in the colonic delivery of albendazole. | Martins EMEJE Phyllis NWABUNIKE Yetunde ISIMI Olobayo KUNLE Sabinus OFOEFULE | 2009 | 药学学报2009,44,10: | 0
Laboratory Assessment of Susceptibility of Maize Varieties to Post-harvest Infestation By Sitophilus zeamais(Mostchulsky)(Coleoptera: Curculionidae)显示文摘A study was carried out to determine the relative susceptibility of six maize(Zea mays L.) varieties to maize weevil,Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky(Coleoptera: Curculionidae). It was conducted at Department of Crop Protection Laboratory,University of Ilorin, Nigeria at ambient temperature of 28±2℃ and 68%±3% relative humidity. Samples of the varieties were infestedwith five pairs of S. zeamais adults in their respective containers arranged in completely randomized design with three replications.Data were collected on moisture content, adult mortality, adult emergence, grain loss and grain damage. The index of susceptibilityand means of damage parameters were used to determine susceptibility of the maize varieties. The results showed that 2008 SYNEE W DT STR was highly resistant and 2004 TZE-W POP STR C4 was moderately resistant, while 2004 TZE-Y-POP STR C4,99 TZEE-Y-STR, EV99 QPM and TZE-Y-POP DT STR QPM C0 S1 were susceptible. Under artificial infestation, the weevils hadsignificantly longer survival period in the susceptible varieties than those in the resistant genotype. It could be concluded that thesusceptible varieties already released to farmers should be protected from maize weevil damage. | musa abdulrasak kannike ajayi mary yusuf sáadat yetunde lawal mujidat temidayo | 2018 | Journal of Northeast Agricultural University(English Edition)2018,25,4: | 0
