Visualization of the complex structure and stress field inside rock by means of 3D printing technology显示文摘Accurate characterization and visualization of the complex inner structure and stress distribution of rocks are of vital significance to solve a variety of underground engineering problems. In this paper, we incorporate several advanced technologies, such as CT scan, three-dimensional(3D) reconstruction, and 3D printing, to produce a physical model representing the natural coal rock that inherently contains complex fractures or joints. We employ 3D frozen stress and photoelastic technologies to characterize and visualize the stress distribution within the fractured rock under uniaxial compression. The 3D printed model presents the fracture structures identical to those of the natural prototype. The mechanical properties of the printed model, including uniaxial compression strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio, are testified to be similar to those of the prototype coal rock. The frozen stress and photoelastic tests show that the location of stress concentration and the stress gradient around the discontinuous fractures are in good agreement with the numerical predictions of the real coalsample. The proposed method appears to be capable of visually quantifying the influences of discontinuous, irregular fractures on the strength, deformation, and stress concentration of coal rock. The method of incorporating3 D printing and frozen stress technologies shows a promising way to quantify and visualize the complex fracture structures and their influences on 3D stress distribution of underground rocks, which can also be used to verify numerical simulations.Yang Ju Heping Xie Zemin Zheng Jinbo Lu Lingtao Mao Feng Gao Ruidong Peng 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,36:41
Energy analysis and criteria for structural failure of rocks显示文摘The intrinsic relationships between energy dissipation, energy release, strength and abrupt structural failure are key to understanding the evolution of deformational processes in rocks.Theoretical and experimental studies confirm that energy plays an important role in rock deformation and failure.Dissipated energy from external forces produces damage and irreversible deformation within rock and decreases rock strength over time.Structural failure of rocks is caused by an abrupt release of strain energy that manifests as a catastrophic breakdown of the rock under certain conditions. The strain energy released in the rock volume plays a pivotal role in generating this abrupt structural failure in the rocks. In this paper,we propose criteria governing(1) the deterioration of rock strength based on energy dissipation and(2) the abrupt structural failure of rocks based on energy release. The critical stresses at the time of abrupt structural failure under various stress states can be determined by these criteria. As an example, the criteria have been used to analyze the failure conditions of surrounding rock of a circular tunnel.Heping Xie Liyun Li Ruidong Peng Yang Ju 2009Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2009,1,1:39
Mechanical behavior of coal under different mining rates:A case study from laboratory experiments to field testing显示文摘During the development of hot dry rock, the research on thermal fatigue damage caused by thermal shock of cold and heat cycles is the basis that ensures the long-term utilization of geothermal resources, but there are not enough relevant studies at present.Based on this, the thermal damage tests of granite at different temperatures(250,350,450°C)and quenching cycles(1,5,10,15 cycles)were carried out.Preliminary reveals the damage mechanism and heat transfer law of the quenching cycle effect on hot dry rock. The results show that with the increase of temperature and cycles, the uneven thermal expansion of minerals and the thermal shock caused by quenching promote the crack development of granite, resulting in the decrease of P-wave velocity, thermal conductivity and uniaxial compressive strength of granite.Meanwhile, the COMSOL was used to simulate the heat transfer of hot dry rock under different heat treatment conditions. It concluded that the increase in the number of quenching cycles reduced the heat transfer capacity of the granite, especially more than 10 quenching cycles, which also reflects that the thermal fatigue damage leads to a longer time for the temperature recovery of the hot dry rock mass.In addition, the three-dimensional nonlinear fitting relationship among thermal conductivity, temperature and cycle number was established for the first time, which can better reveal the change rule of thermal conductivity after quenching thermal fatigue effect of hot dry rock. The research results provide theoretical support for hot dry rock reservoir reconstruction and production efficiency evaluation.Mingzhong Gao Jing Xie Yanan Gao Wenyong Wang Cong Li Bengao Yang Junjun Liu Heping Xie 2021International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2021,31,5:39
Energy analysis for damage and catastrophic failure of rocks显示文摘The development history and current state of studies on the characteristics and mechanisms of deformation and failure of rock materials were briefly reviewed from the viewpoint of energy. The main scope and the achievable objectives of the energy-based research system were expatiated. It was validated by experiments that the damage process of rocks can be well described by the rock damage evolution equation established based on energy dissipation. It was found from the uniaxial compression and biaxial compression tests that only a small proportion of the total input energy in hard rocks is dissipated before peak load and a large proportion in soft rocks is dissipated before peak load. For both hard and soft rocks, the energy dissipated after peak load accounts for a greater proportion.More energy would be required for rock failure under equal biaxial compression than under unequal biaxial compression. The total absorbed energy is different for rock failure under high-rate loading and low-rate loading.More fragmented failure pattern usually corresponds to higher energy absorption. The mesoscopic analysis on the damage and failure of bedded salt rocks showed that the energy dissipation is prominent and the total absorbed energy for rock failure is low when cracks propagate in the weak mud interlayer while it is contrary when cracks propagate in the salt rock. The energy accumulation, transfer, dissipation and release during the failure process of tunnel with impending failure under disturbance were analyzed theoretically based on the elastoplastic mechanics theory.Furthermore, the spatial distribution of energy dissipation and energy release of fractured rocks under unloading was simulated numerically. It was demonstrated that energy is likely to be released from the weakest surface under compression, which triggers the global failure of rocks.XIE HePing 1,2,LI LiYun 2,1,JU Yang 2,PENG RuiDong 2 & YANG YongMing 2 1 Sichuan University,Chengdu 610065,China 2 State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining,Beijing Key Laboratory of Fracture and Damage Mechanics of Rock and Concrete,China University of Mining and Technology,Beijing 100083,China 2011Science China(Technological Sciences)2011,54,S1:29
An experimental investigation on the mechanism of fluid flow through single rough fracture of rock显示文摘The structure of fractures in nature rock appears irregular and induces complicated seepage flow behavior. The mechanism and quantitative description of fluid flow through rock fractures is a difficult subject that has been greatly concerned in the fields of geotechnical, mining, geological, and petroleum engineering. In order to probe the mechanism of fluid flow and the effects of rough structures,we conducted a few laboratory tests of fluid flow through single rough fractures,in which the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot fractal function and PMMA material were employed to produce the fracture models with various fractal roughnesses.A high-speed video camera was employed to record the fluid flow through the entire single rough fracture with a constant hydraulic pressure. The properties of fluid flow varying with the fracture roughness and the influences of the rough structure were analyzed. The components of flow resistance of a single rough fracture were discussed.A fractal model was proposed to relate the fluid resistance to the fracture roughness.A fractal equivalent permeability coefficient of a single rough fracture was formulated. This study aims to provide an experimental basis and reference for better understanding and quantitatively relating the fluid flow properties to the structures of rock fractures.JU Yang ZHANG QinGang YANG YongMing XIE HePing GAO Feng WANG HuiJie 2013Science China(Technological Sciences)2013,56,8:28
Single whispering-gallery mode lasing in polymer bottle microresonators via spatial pump engineering显示文摘Single-mode lasing in whispering-gallery mode(WGM)microresonators is challenging to achieve. In bottle microresonators, the highly non-degenerated WGMs are spatially well-separated along the long-axis direction and provide mode-selection capability. In this work,by engineering the pump intensity to modify the spatial gain profiles of bottle microresonators,we demonstrate a simple and general approach to realizing single-mode WGM lasing in polymer bottle microresonators. The pump intensity is engineered into an interference distribution on the bottle microresonator surface.By tuning the spacing between axial positions of the interference pump patterns, the mode intensity profiles of single-bottle WGMs can be spatially overlapped with the interference stripes, intrinsically enabling single-mode lasing and selection.Attractive advantages of the system, including high sidemode suppression factors 420 dB,large spectral tunability 48 nm,low-lasing threshold and reversible control, are presented. Our demonstrated approach may have a variety of promising applications, ranging from tunable single-mode lasing and sensing to nonlinear optics.Fuxing Gu Fuming Xie Xing Lin Shuangyi Linghu Wei Fang Heping Zeng Limin Tong Songlin Zhuang 2017Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1:17
Simultaneous mineralization of CO_2 and recovery of soluble potassium using earth-abundant potassium feldspar显示文摘CO2 capture and storage(CCS) is an important strategy in combatting anthropogenic climate change. However, commercial application of the CCS technique is currently hampered by its high energy expenditure and costs. To overcome this issue,CO2 capture and utilization(CCU) is a promising CO2 disposal method. We,for the first time, developed a promising method to mineralize CO2 using earth-abundant potassium feldspar in order to effectively reduce CO2 emissions. Our experiments demonstrate that, after adding calcium chloride hexahydrate as an additive, the K-feldspar can be transformed to Ca-silicates at 800 C,which can easily mineralize CO2 to form stable calcium carbonate and recover soluble potassium. The conversion of this process reached 84.7%.With further study, the pretreatment temperature can be reduced to 250 C using hydrothermal method by adding the solution of triethanolamine(TEA).The highest conversion can be reached 40.1%.The process of simultaneous mineralization of CO2 and recovery of soluble potassium can be easily implemented in practice and may provide an economically feasible way to tackle global anthropogenic climate change.XIE HePing WANG YuFei JU Yang LIANG Bin ZHU JiaHua ZHANG Ru XIE LingZhi LIU Tao ZHOU XiangGe ZENG HongMei LI Chun LU HouFang 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,1:16
Influence of different mining layouts on the mechanical properties of coal显示文摘Non-pillar mining,top-coal caving and protected coal seam mining are the most popular mining methods in coal exploitation, and the different mining layouts will change the stress state and failure mechanism of coal in front of the working face.In this paper,mining-induced mechanical behaviors under three mining layouts have been simulated in the laboratory to investigate the effects of mining layouts on the deformation and strength of coal.Furthermore, the coal failure mechanism under different mining layouts is analyzed microscopically. The experimental results indicate that the stage characteristics of the coal deformation are obvious.Under the serial action of non-pillar mining,top-coal caving and protected coal seam mining layouts, the values of radial deformation, volume strain and Poisson's ratio increase, while the peak strength and deformation modulus decrease at the same buried depth, and the peak strength under non-pillar mining,top-coal caving and protected coal seam mining is about 3.0,2.5 and 2.0 times of the initial confining pressure, respectively. The results also indicate that the trend of the coal deformation decreases with the increase of the buried depth under the same mining layout, while the strength and deformation modulus increase, and the failure mechanism under three mining layouts is dominated with shear/tensile failure.Xie Heping Zhao Xiaoping Liu Jianfeng Zhang Ru Xue Dongjie 2012International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2012,22,6:14
Indirect mineral carbonation of titanium-bearing blast furnace slag coupled with recovery of TiO_2 and Al_2O_3显示文摘Large quantities of CO_2 and blast furnace slag are discharged in the iron and steel industry. Mineral carbonation of blast furnace slag can offer substantial CO_2 emission reduction and comprehensive utilization of the solid waste. This paper describes a novel route for indirect mineral carbonation of titanium-bearing blast furnace(TBBF) slag,in which the TBBF slag is roasted with recyclable(NH_4)_2SO_4(AS) at low temperatures and converted into the sulphates of various valuable metals, including calcium, magnesium, aluminium and titanium. High value added Ti-and Al-rich products can be obtained through stepwise precipitation of the leaching solution from the roasted slag. The NH_3 produced during the roasting is used to capture CO_2 from flue gases. The NH_4HCO_3 and(NH_4)_2CO_3 thus obtained are used to carbonate the CaSO_4-containing leaching residue and MgSO_4-rich leaching solution, respectively. In this study, the process parameters and efficiency for the roasting, carbonation and Ti and Al recovery were investigated in detail. The results showed that the sulfation ratios of calcium, magnesium, titanium and aluminium reached 92.6%, 87% and 84.4%, respectively, after roasting at an AS-to-TBBF slag mass ratio of 2:1 and 350 °C for 2 h. The leaching solution was subjected to hydrolysis at 102 °C for 4 h with a Ti hydrolysis ratio of 95.7% and the purity of TiO_2 in the calcined hydrolysate reached 98 wt%.99.7% of aluminium in the Ti-depleted leaching solution was precipitated by using NH_3. The carbonation products of Ca and Mg were CaCO_3 and(NH_4)_2 Mg(CO_3)_2·4H_2O, respectively. The latter can be decomposed into MgCO_3 at 100–200 °C with simultaneous recovery of the NH_3 for reuse. In this process, approximately 82.1% of Ca and 84.2%of Mg in the TBBF slag were transformed into stable carbonates and the total CO_2 sequestration capacity per ton of TBBF slag reached up to 239.7 kg. The TiO_2 obtained can be used directly as an end product, while the Al-rich precipitate and the two carbonation products can act, respectively, as raw materials for electrolytic aluminium, cement and light magnesium carbonate production for the replacement of natural resources.Lin Wang Weizao Liu Jingpeng Hu Qiang Liu Hairong Yue Bin Liang Guoquan Zhang Dongmei Luo Heping Xie Chun Li 2018Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2018,26,3:14
Experimental study on the mechanical and failure behaviors of deep rock subjected to true triaxial stress:A review显示文摘It has become an inevitable trend of human development to seek resources from the deep underground. However, rock encountered in deep underground engineering is usually in an anisotropic stress state(σ_(1)>σ>σ_(3))due to the influences of geological structures and engineering disturbances. It is therefore essential to study the mechanical, seepage, and dynamic disaster behaviors of deep rock under true triaxial stress to ensure the safe operation of deep rock engineering and the efficient exploitation of deep resources. In recent years, experimental techniques and research on true triaxial rock mechanics have achieved fruitful results that have promoted the rapid development of deep rock mechanics;thus,it is necessary to systematically review and summarize these developments. This work first introduced several typical true triaxial testing apparatus and then reviewed the corresponding research progress on rock deformation, strength, failure mode, brittleness, and energy as well as the 3D volumetric fracturing(dynamic disaster)properties of deep rocks under true triaxial stress. Then, several commonly used true triaxial rock strength criteria and their applicability, the permeability characteristics and mathematical models of deep reservoir rocks, and the disaster-causing processes and mechanisms of disturbed volumetric fracturing(rockburst, compound dynamic disasters)in deep rock engineering were described. This work may provide an essential reference for addressing the true triaxial rock mechanics issues involved in deep rock engineering, especially regarding the stability of surrounding rock at depth, disaster prevention and control, and oil and gas exploitation.Heping Xie Jun Lu Cunbao Li Minghui Li Mingzhong Gao 2022International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2022,32,5:13
Lattice-Boltzmann simulation of microscale CH_4 flow in porous rock subject to force-induced deformation显示文摘Accurate knowledge of the influence of rock deformation on the permeability of fluid flow is of great significance to a variety of engineering applications, such as simultaneous extraction of coal and gas, oil/gas exploitation, CO2 geological sequestration, and underground water conservation. Based on the CT representation of pore structures of sandstones, a LBM(Lattice Boltzmann Method) for simulating CH4 flow in pore spaces at microscale levels and a parallel LBM algorithm for largesize porous models are developed in this paper. The properties of CH4 flow in porous sandstones and the effects of pore structure are investigated using LBM. The simulation is validated by comparing the results with the measured data. In addition, we incorporate LBM and FEM to probe the deformation of microstructures due to applied triaxial forces and its influence on the properties of CH4 flow. It is shown that the proposed method is capable of visually and quantitatively describing the characteristics of microstructure, spatial distribution of flow velocity of CH4,permeability, and the influences of deformation of pore spaces on these quantities as well. It is shown that there is a good consistency between LBM simulation and experimental measurement in terms of the permeability of sandstone with various porosities.Yang Ju Jinbo Wang Feng Gao Heping Xie 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,26:13

An efficient methodology for utilization of K-feldspar and phosphogypsum with reduced energy consumption and CO2 emissions显示文摘The issues of reducing CO_2 emissions, sustainably utilizing natural mineral resources, and dealing with industrial waste offer challenges for sustainable development in energy and the environment. We propose an efficient methodology via the co-reaction of K-feldspar and phosphogypsum for the extraction of soluble potassium salts and recovery of SO_2 with reduced CO_2 emission and energy consumption. The results of characterization and reactivity evaluation indicated that the partial melting of K-feldspar and phosphogypsum in the hightemperature co-reaction significantly facilitated the reduction of phosphogypsum to SO_2 and the exchange of K^+(K-feldspar) with Ca^(2+)(CaSO_4 in phosphogypsum). The reaction parameters were systematically investigated with the highest sulfur recovery ratio of ~ 60% and K extraction ratio of ~ 87.7%. This novel methodology possesses an energy consumption reduction of ~ 28% and CO_2 emission reduction of ~ 55% comparing with the present typical commercial technologies for utilization of K-feldspar and the treatment of phosphogypsum.Zhixi Gan Zheng Cui Hairong Yue Siyang Tang Changjun Liu Chun Li Bin Liang Heping Xie 2016Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2016,24,11:11

Fluidized mining and in-situ transformation of deep underground coal resources: a novel approach to ensuring safe, environmentally friendly, low-carbon, and clean utilisation显示文摘Traditional coal mining and utilisation patterns are severely detrimental to natural resources and environments and significantly impede safe, low-carbon, clean, and sustainable utilisation of coal resources. Based on the idea of in situ fluidized coal mining that aims to transform solid coal into liquid or gas and transports the fluidized resources to the ground to ensure safe mining and low-carbon and clean utilisation, in this study, we report on a novel in situ unmanned automatic mining method. This includes a flexible, earthworm-like unmanned automatic mining machine (UAMM) and a coal mine layout for in situ fluidized coal mining suitable for the UAMM. The technological and economic advantages and the carbon emission reduction of the UAMM-based in situ fluidized mining in contrast to traditional mining technologies are evaluated as well. The development trends and possible challenges to this design are also discussed. It is estimated that the proposed method costs approximately 49% of traditional coal mining costs. The UAMM-based in situ fluidized mining and transformation method will reduce CO2 emissions by at least 94.9% compared to traditional coal mining and utilisation methods. The proposed approach is expected to achieve safe and environmentally friendly coal mining as well as lowcarbon and clean utilisation of coal.Yang Ju Yan Zhu Heping Xie Xiaodong Nie Yong Zhang Chang Lu Feng Gao 2019International Journal of Coal Science & Technology2019,6,2:8
Investigation of meso-failure behavior of rock under thermal-mechanical coupled effects based on high temperature SEM显示文摘It is extremely important to study and understand the deformation behavior and strength characteristics of rocks under thermal-mechanical(TM) coupling effects.Failure behavior and strength characteristics of Pingdingshan sandstone were investigated at room temperatures up to 300oC in an internally heated apparatus and tensile load through meso-scale laboratory experiments in this work.33 experiments have successfully been conducted for Pingdingshan sandstone.Experimental results indicated that the tensile strength increased slowly with temperatures from 25oC to 100oC,and then sharply jumped from 100oC to 150oC,and finally decreased slightly with temperatures from 150oC to 300oC.And about 150oC is the threshold temperature of strength and thermal cracking. At low temperatures(25oC-150oC),sandstone strength is determined by relatively weak clay cement. However,at higher temperatures(150oC-300oC),because of the strength enhancement of clay cement, sandstone strength is controlled by both mineral particles and clay cement. The effects of cement clay,micro-cracks closing, and thermal cracking were the possible reasons for our detailed analysis. In addition, the typical fracture position maps and nominal stress-strain curves indicated that the temperature had strong effects on the failure mechanism of sandstone. The fractograph implied that the dominant fracture mechanism tended to transform from brittle at low temperatures to ductile at high temperatures.ZUO JianPing XIE HePing ZHOU HongWei 2012Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2012,55,10:7
Fracture Characteristics and Heat Accumulation of Jixianian Carbonate Reservoirs in the Rongcheng Geothermal Field, Xiong'an New Area显示文摘Geothermal energy plays an important role in urban construction of the Xiong’an New Area. Geothermal reservoir fracture distribution of the Mesoproterozoic Jixianian Wumishan Formation(Fm.) carbonate reservoir in the Rongcheng geothermal field are evaluated based on FMI log from Wells D19 and D21. The results show carbonate reservoir fracture density of Well D19 is 15.2/100 m, greater than that of Well D21 with a value of 9.2/100 m. Reservoir porosity and permeability of Well D19 are better than that of Well D21, and the water saturation is bimodally distributed. The movable fluid volume ratio(BVM) of Well D19 is 2% to 8% with some zones exceeding 20%, while the value of Well D21 is less than 4%. Therefore, reservoir fractures in Well D19 are more conducive to fluid flow. Reservoir fractures have a similar occurrence to normal faults, indicating that the tensile stress field controlled the formation of such fractures. Developed reservoir fractures provide a good channel for groundwater convection. The circulation of regional groundwater and the heat exchange between water and rock and the multiple heat accumulation patterns form a stable and high potential heat reservoir in the Rongcheng geothermal field.WANG Yingjin MA Feng XIE Heping WANG Guiling WANG Zhihe 2021Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2021,95,6:5
Recent Progress of Two-Dimensional Thermoelectric Materials显示文摘Thermoelectric generators have attracted a wide research interest owing to their ability to directly convert heat into electrical power. Moreover, the thermoelectric properties of traditional inorganic and organic materials have been significantly improved over the past few decades.Among these compounds, layered two-dimensional(2D)materials,such as graphene, black phosphorus, transition metal dichalcogenides,IVA–VIA compounds, and MXenes, have generated a large research attention as a group of potentially high-performance thermoelectric materials.Due to their unique electronic, mechanical, thermal, and optoelectronic properties, thermoelectric devices based on such materials can be applied in a variety of applications.Herein,a comprehensive review on the development of 2D materials for thermoelectric applications,as well as theoretical simulations and experimental preparation,is presented. In addition, nanodevice and new applications of 2D thermoelectric materials are also introduced. At last, current challenges are discussed and several prospects in this field are proposed.Delong Li Youning Gong Yuexing Chen Jiamei Lin Qasim Khan Yupeng Zhang Yu Li Han Zhang Heping Xie 2020Nano-Micro Letters2020,12,3:5
Mineralization of flue gas CO_2 with coproduction of valuable magnesium carbonate by means of magnesium chloride显示文摘CO2 mineralization and utilization is a new area for reducing the CO2 emissions.By reacting with natural mineral or industrial waste,CO2 can be transformed into valuable solid carbonate(such as calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate)with recovery of some products simultaneously. In this paper,a novel method was proposed to mineralize CO2 by means of magnesium chloride with small energy consumption. In this method, magnesium chloride was firstly transformed into magnesium hydroxide by electrolysis. The formed magnesium hydroxide showed high reactivity to mineralize CO2.In our study, even at low concentration,CO2 can be effectively mineralized by this method, which makes it possible to directly mineralize flue gas CO2,avoiding the expensive process of CO2capture and purification. Moreover, valuable products such as hydromagnesite and nesquehonite can be recovered by this method.Because of the wide distribution of magnesium chloride in nature,large-scale CO2mineralization is potential by means of magnesium chloride.Heping Xie Yufei Wang Wei Chu Yang Ju 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,23:5
Remarkable carbon dioxide catalytic capture (CDCC) leading to solid-form carbon material via a new CVD integrated process (CVD-IP): An alternative route for CO_2 sequestration显示文摘Through our newly-developed 'chemical vapor deposition integrated process (CVD-IP)' using carbon dioxide (CO2) as the raw material and only carbon source introduced, CO2 could be catalytically activated and converted to a new solid-form product, i.e., carbon nanotubes (CO2-derived) at a quite high yield (the single-pass carbon yield in the solid-form carbon-product produced from CO2 catalytic capture and conversion was more than 30% at a single-pass carbon-base). For comparison, when only pure carbon dioxide was introduced using the conventional CVD method without integrated process, no solid-form carbon-material product could be formed. In the addition of saturated steam at room temperature in the feed for CVD, there were much more end-opening carbon nano-tubes produced, at a slightly higher carbon yield. These inspiring works opened a remarkable and alternative new approach for carbon dioxide catalytic capture to solid-form product, comparing with that of CO2 sequestration (CCS) or CO2 mineralization (solidification), etc. As a result, there was much less body volume and almost no greenhouse effect for this solid-form carbon-material than those of primitive carbon dioxide.Wei Chu Maofei Ran Xu Zhang Ning Wang Yufei Wang Heping Xie Xiusong Zhao 2013Journal of Energy Chemistry2013,22,1:5
