3Tuning the microstructure for superb corrosion resistance in eutectic high entropy alloy显示文摘In this work,we demonstrate that the corrosion resistance of the FeCrNiCoNb_(0.5) eutectic high entropy alloy(EHEA)can be tuned by controlling the size of its eutectic structure.Through microstructure refinement,the EHEA exhibits a superb corrosion resistance in 1 M NaCl in terms of a very low corrosion current density and an ultra-high transpassviation potential,which outperforms a variety of other HEAs and conventional metals and alloys.At the fundamental level,the microstructure refinement results in a rapid formation of a thick and compact passive film with less Cl-adsorption on the EHEA,which results in significant enhancement in its corrosion resistance.The outcome of our research provides important insights into the design of corrosion resistant chemically complex alloys.S.Shuang Q.Yua X.Gao Q.F.He J.Y.Zhang S.Q.Shi Y.Yang 2022Journal of Materials Science & Technology2022,,14:4
4Deep Learning-Driven Data Curation and Model Interpretation for Smart Manufacturing显示文摘Characterized by self-monitoring and agile adaptation to fast changing dynamics in complex production environments,smart manufacturing as envisioned under Industry 4.0 aims to improve the throughput and reliability of production beyond the state-of-the-art.While the widespread application of deep learning(DL)has opened up new opportunities to accomplish the goal,data quality and model interpretability have continued to present a roadblock for the widespread acceptance of DL for real-world applications.This has motivated research on two fronts:data curation,which aims to provide quality data as input for meaningful DL-based analysis,and model interpretation,which intends to reveal the physical reasoning underlying DL model outputs and promote trust from the users.This paper summarizes several key techniques in data curation where breakthroughs in data denoising,outlier detection,imputation,balancing,and semantic annotation have demonstrated the effectiveness in information extraction from noisy,incomplete,insufficient,and/or unannotated data.Also highlighted are model interpretation methods that address the“black-box”nature of DL towards model transparency.Jianjing Zhang Robert X.Gao 2021Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering2021,34,3:2
5Power Balance Estimation in Long Duration Discharges on QUEST显示文摘Fully non-inductive plasma start-up was successfully achieved by using a wellcontrolled microwave source on the spherical tokamak, QUEST. Non-inductive plasmas were maintained for approximately 3–5 min, during which time power balance estimates could be achieved by monitoring wall and cooling-water temperatures. Approximately 70%–90% of the injected power could be accounted for by calorimetric measurements and approximately half of the injected power was found to be deposited on the vessel wall, which is slightly dependent on the magnetic configuration. 13Indirect Measurement Methods forQuality and Process Control in Nanomanufacturing显示文摘Rapid advancement over the past decades in nanomanufacturing has led to the realization of a broad range of nanostructures such as nanoparticles,nanotubes,and nanowires.The unique mechanical,chemical,and electrical properties of these nanostructures have made them increasingly desired as key components in industrial and commercial applications.As the geometric dimension of nano-manufactured products is on the sub-micron to nanometer scale,different mechanisms and effects are involved in the nanomanufacturing process as compared to those for macro-scale manufacturing.Although direct measurement methods using atomic force microscopy and electron beam microscopy can determine the dimensions of the nano structure with high accuracy,these methods are not suited for online process control and quality assurance.In comparison,indirect measurement methods analyze in-process parameters as the basis for inferring the dimensional variations in the nano products,thereby enabling online feedback for process control and quality assurance.This paper provides a comprehensive review of relevant indirect measurement methods,starting with their respective working principles,and subsequently discussing their characteristics and applications in terms of two different approaches:data-based and physicsbased methods.Relevant mathematical and physics models for each of the methods are summarized,together with the associated effect of key process parameters on the quality of the final product.Based on the comprehensive literature conducted,it was found that:(1)indirect measurement,especially the data-based method,plays a critical role when it comes to online process control and quality assurance in nanomanufacturing,because of the short processing time compared to the direct method,and(2)physics-based method is providing a way to optimize the process set up for desired geometrical dimensions.Zhaoyan Fan Xiaochen Hu Robert X.Gao 2022Nanomanufacturing and Metrology2022,5,3:1

19Tracing the origin of large respiratory droplets by their deposition characteristics inside the respiratory tract during speech显示文摘Origin of differently sized respiratory droplets is fundamental for clarifying their viral loads and the sequential transmission mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 in indoor environments.Transient talking activities characterized by low(0.2 L/s),medium(0.9 L/s),and high(1.6 L/s)airflow rates of monosyllabic and successive syllabic vocalizations were investigated by computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations based on a real human airway model.SST k-ωmodel was chosen to predict the airflow field,and the discrete phase model(DPM)was used to calculate the trajectories of droplets within the respiratory tract.The results showed that flow field in the respiratory tract during speech is characterized by a significant laryngeal jet,and bronchi,larynx,and pharynx-larynx junction were main deposition sites for droplets released from the lower respiratory tract or around the vocal cords,and among which,over 90%of droplets over 5μm released from vocal cords deposited at the larynx and pharynx-larynx junction.Generally,droplets’deposition fraction increased with their size,and the maximum size of droplets that were able to escape into external environment decreased with the airflow rate.This threshold size for droplets released from the vocal folds was 10-20μm,while that for droplets released from the bronchi was 5-20μm under various airflow rates.Besides,successive syllables pronounced at low airflow rates promoted the escape of small droplets,but do not significantly affect the droplet threshold diameter.This study indicates that droplets larger than 20μm may entirely originate from the oral cavity,where viral loads are lower;it provides a reference for evaluating the relative importance of large-droplet spray and airborne transmission route of COVID-19 and other respiratory infections.Yihan Wang Jianjian Wei Caroline X.Gao Tao Jin Li Liu 2023Building Simulation2023,16,5:0
20Unusually high corrosion resistance in Mo_(x)CrNiCo medium entropy alloy enhanced by acidity in aqueous solution显示文摘High corrosion resistance of alloys is essential for their structural applications;however,most alloys suffer from degradation of their corrosion resistance with the increasing acidity of their surround-ings.Nonetheless,we developed a series of medium-entropy alloys(MEAs)in this work,which ex-hibit high strength,superior fracture toughness and ultra-high corrosion resistance,outperforming the variety of corrosion resistant alloys hitherto reported.Most interestingly,our MEAs exhibit an unusual anti-corrosion behavior and their corrosion resistance increases with acidity in Cl−containing solutions.Through extensive thermodynamic calculations,density functional theory(DFT)simulations and experi-ments,we reveal that the unusual anti-corrosion behavior of our MEAs can be attributed to their surface chemical complexity,which facilitates the physio-chemical-absorption of H_(2)O and O_(2)and thus the rapid formation of metastable medium entropy passive films that contain the lowest amount of defects,as compared to the passive films on conventional alloys reported in the literature.S.Shuang G.J.Lyu D.Chung X.Z.Wang X.Gao H.H.Mao W.P.Li Q.F.He B.S.Guo X.Y.Zhong Y.J.Wang Y.Yang 2023Journal of Materials Science & Technology2023,,8:0
