Both cell division cycle and cell death are highly regulated events. Whether the cell will proceed through the cycle or not, depends upon whether the conditions required at the checkpoints during the cycle are fulfilled. In higher eucaryotic cells, such as mammalian cells, signals that arrest the cycle usually act at a G1 checkpoint. Cells that pass this restriction point are committed to complete the cycle. | 3 | Usefulness of a scoring system in the interpretation of histology in neonatal cholestasis显示文摘AIM:To ascertain the usefulness of a histological scoring system devised to assist in the interpretation of liver histology in neonatal cholestasis(NC) .METHODS:Liver biopsy specimens obtained from infants with NC referred to a tertiary pediatric unit in Malaysia were prospectively studied.The first author,blinded to the final diagnosis,devised the histological diagnosis based on a 7-feature(portal ductal proliferation,bile plugs in portal ductules,portoportal bridging,lymphocytic infiltration in portal region,multinucleated hepatocytes,neutrophilic infiltration,hepatocellular swelling) ,15-point(0 to 15) scoring system.The author classified the histological diagnosis as either biliary atresia(BA) or neonatal hepatitis(NH,all other diagnoses) ,and subsequently compared the author's diagnosis with the final diagnosis.RESULTS:Eighty-four biopsy specimens obtained from 78 patients were reviewed.Without the scoring system,BA was correctly diagnosed by the author histologically in 30 cases,labelled as NH in 3.For other diagnoses,BA was excluded correctly in 33 cases and mislabeled as BA in 2 cases.The overall sensitivity for BA was 91%,specificity 86% and accuracy 88%.With the scoring system,a score of ≥ 7 had the best diagnostic utility to differentiate BA from other intrahepatic cholestasis histologically(sensitivity 88%,specificity 94%,accuracy 92%) .Four patients with a score < 7 had BA,and 3 patients with a score ≥ 7 had NH.CONCLUSION:A 7-feature,15-point histological scoring system had good diagnostic accuracy in the interpretation of liver histology in neonatal cholestasis. | Way Seah Lee Lai Meng Looi | 2009 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,42: | 11 |
| 4 | Relationship Between Measured Friction Coefficients and Two Tread Groove Design Parameters for Footwear Pads显示文摘The shoe sole geometrical design parameters are believed to be important factors affecting the coefficient of friction (COF) between the shoe/floor interface. This study is concerned with the relationship between the measured COF and the tread groove orientation and width on the footwear pad. Friction meas-urements using the Brungraber Mark Ⅱ slipmeter were conducted. Six tread groove width/orientations de-signs on the footwear pads under 27 footwear material/floor/contamination conditions were tested. The re-sults show that tread orientation and width affect the measured COF significantly. Wider grooved footwear pads result in higher COF values and footwear pads with tread grooves perpendicular to the friction meas-urement direction have higher COF values. A regression model using measured COF as the dependent variable and tread groove width, groove orientation, footwear material, floor, and contamination conditions as independent variables was established. The response of B cells to their specific Ag can be activation and proliferation, leading to the immune response, or anergy and activation-induced cell death (AICD), leading to tolerance. AICD in B lymphocytes is a highly regulated event initiated by crosslinking of the B cell receptor (BCR). BCR engagement initiates several signaling events such as activation of PLCr, Ras, and PI3K, which generally speaking, lead to survival. However, in the absence of survival signals (CD40 or IL-4R engagement), BCR crosslinking can also promote apoptotic signal transduction pathways such as activation of effector caspases, expression of pro-apoptotic genes, and inhibition of pro-survival genes. | 9 | New approaches to characterizing urban air particles in central London显示文摘Atmospheric particles in central London during July 1996 have been apportioned to sources by two complimentary techniques: (1) morphological characteristics, determined using high power light microscopy; (2) chemical composition determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy. During the study period, the majority of particles were found to be either biological in origin, or from vehicle related combustion processes. Trends in the latter group of particles are explored further. Numbers of particles per cubic metre were determined at an hourly resolution over a period of six days, and were found to be significantly correlated with other traffic pollutants such as benzene and 1,3 butadiene, although there is no relationship with mass of PM10 as measured by a nearby UK Government monitoring station. | 13 | DEVELOPMENT OF SOIL EROSION INDEX MODEL IN TAIWAN WATERSHEDS显示文摘With steep terrain and excessive rainfall, Taiwan is affected by severe soil erosion caused by summer typhoons and storms that bring intensive rainfall and rapid flows,. However, the actual erosion is much less than the value predicted by the USLE because the soil erosion types in Taiwan are different from those in America which has mild slope and dry weather. Developing a soil erosion index model applicable to Taiwan is the important goal of this research. Five factors, namely, soil texture, rainfall type, slope steepness, ground cover and land use, are included in this model. Soil index factor is measured by Km from the USLE model, and other index factors are calculated from local field data. The soil erosion index model (SEIM) is as follows: SE=6x10-7AIfor AI≤50 SE = 0.233AI1.8 for AI > 50 where AI is the total index value, and SE is the soil erosion quantity (ton/ha/yr). | 15 | Variable outcome in infantile-onset inflammatory bowel disease in an Asian cohort显示文摘AIM Infantile-onset inflammatory bowel disease(IO-IBD) with the onset of disease before 12 mo of age, is a different disease entity from childhood IBD. We aimed to describe the clinical features, outcome and role of mutation in interleukin-10(IL-10) and interleukin-10 receptors(IL-10R) in Asian children with IO-IBD. METHODS All cases of IO-IBD, defined as onset of disease before 12 mo of age, seen at University Malaya Medical Center, Malaysia were reviewed. We performed mutational analysis for IL10 and IL10 R genes in patients with presenting clinical features of Crohn's disease(CD).RESULTS Six [13%; CD = 3, ulcerative colitis(UC) = 2, IBDunclassified(IBD-U) = 1] of the 48 children(CD = 25; UC = 23) with IBD have IO-IBD. At final review [median(range) duration of follow-up: 6.5(3.0-20) years], three patients were in remission without immunosuppression [one each for post-colostomy(IBD-U), after standard immunosuppression(CD), and after total colectomy(UC)]. Three patients were on immunosuppression:one(UC) was in remission while two(both CD) had persistent disease. As compared with later-onset disease, IO-IBD were more likely to present with bloody diarrhea(100% vs 55%, P = 0.039) but were similar in terms of an associated autoimmune liver disease(0% vs 19%, P = 0.31), requiring biologics therapy(50% vs 36%, P = 0.40), surgery(50% vs 29%, P = 0.27), or achieving remission(50% vs 64%, P = 0.40). No mutations in either IL10 or IL10 R in the three patients with CD and the only patient with IBD-U were identified.CONCLUSION The clinical features of IO-IBD in this Asian cohort of children who were negative for IL-10 or IL-10 R mutations were variable.
