1Are Offshore RMB Arrangements the Basis for a Long-term Exchange Rate System without Convertibility?显示文摘This paper discusses China's relatively new structure of dual onshore and offshore RMB markets.Its distinguishing feature is both offshore trading at exchange rates that are market determined and onshore trading at exchange rates anchored at the official spot rate with capital account inconvertibility.We note that thus far the CNH and CNY spot rates have largely tracked each other,suggesting that the shadow price on the convertibility constraint onshore and also the offshore diversification benefit is close to zero.However,this could change in the future.We discuss the potential for the offshore RMB market to grow with trade settlement and bilateral swap arrangements in RMB,which would provide a big enough pool of liquidity for the RMB to become a vehicle currency and reserve currency.These potential developments will be restrained by onshore inconvertibility,but moving to convertibility seemingly implies major change in China's financial structure and the offshore RMB arrangements are only a small first step along this path.Crucial in this evolution of arrangements will be future Chinese growth performance and the relative attractiveness of onshore inconvertible but offshore marketable RMB relative to the debt laden and slow growth currencies of the USA,the EU and Japan.John Whalley Hejing Chen 2013China & World Economy2013,21,1:14

5Shrinkage Characteristics of Lime Concretion Black Soil as Affected by Biochar Amendment显示文摘Studies have reported that biochar is a sustainable amendment that improves the chemical and physical properties of soil.In this study,an incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different application rates of biochar on the cracking pattern and shrinkage characteristics of lime concretion black soil after three wetting and drying cycles.Biochar derived from the corn straw and peanut shell mixture was applied to the soil at rates of 0,50,100,and 150 g kg^(-1)dry weight,representing the treatments T_(0),T_(50),T_(100),and T_(150),respectively.During the wetting and drying cycles,the cracking pattern and shrinkage characteristics of the unamended and amended soil samples were recorded.Application of biochar significantly increased soil organic carbon content in the samples.During soil desiccation,biochar significantly reduced the rate of water loss.Cracks propagated slowly and stopped due to the relatively higher water content in the soil applied with biochar.The cracking area density(ρ_c),equivalent width,fractal dimension,and cracking connectivity index decreased during the drying process with increasing application rate of biochar.Theρ_(c )value of the T_(50),T_(100),and T_(150) treatments decreased by 33.6%,52.1%,and 56.9%,respectively,after three wetting and drying cycles,whereas the T_(0) treatment exhibited a marginal change.The coefficient of linear extensibility,an index used to describe onedimentional shrinkage,of the unamended soil sample(T_(0))was approximately 0.23.Application of 100 and 150 g kg^(-1)biochar to the soil significantly reduced the shrinkage capacity by 41.45%and 45.54%,respectively.The slope of the shrinkage characteristics curve,which indicates the ralationship between soil void ratio and moisture ratio,decreased with increase in the application rate of biochar.Furthermore,compared with the T_(0) treatment,the proportional shrinkage zone of the shrinkage characteristic curve of the T_(50),T_(100),and T_(150) treatments decreased by 5.8%,13.1%,and 12.1%,respectively.Differences were not observed in the moisture ratio at the maximum curvature of the shrinkage characteristic curve among the treatments.The results indicate that biochar can alter the cracking pattern and shrinkage characteristics of lime concretion black soil.However,the effects of biochar on the shrinkage of lime concretion black soil are dependent on the number of wetting and drying cycles.WEI Cuilan GAO Weida William Richard WHALLEY LI Baoguo 2018Pedosphere2018,28,5:3

10Using strategically applied grazing to manage invasive alien plants in novel grasslands显示文摘Introduction:Novel ecosystems that contain new combinations of invasive alien plants(IAPs)present a challenge for managers.Yet,control strategies that focus on the removal of the invasive species and/or restoring historical disturbance regimes often do not provide the best outcome for long-term control of IAPs and the promotion of more desirable plant species.Methods:This study seeks to identify the primary drivers of grassland invasion to then inform management practices toward the restoration of native ecosystems.By revisiting both published and unpublished data from experiments and case studies within mainly an Australian context for native grassland management,we show how alternative states models can help to design control strategies to manage undesirable IAPs by manipulating grazing pressure.Results:Ungulate grazing is generally considered antithetical to invasive species management because in many countries where livestock production is a relatively new disturbance to grasslands(such as in Australia and New Zealand as well as Canada and the USA),selective grazing pressure may have facilitated opportunities for IAPs to establish.We find that grazing stock can be used to manipulate species composition in favour of the desirable components in pastures,but whether grazing is rested or strategically applied depends on the management goal,sizes of populations of the IAP and more desirable species,and climatic and edaphic conditions.Conclusions:Based on our findings,we integrated these relationships to develop a testable framework for managing IAPs with strategic grazing that considers both the current state of the plant community and the desired future state—i.e.the application of the principles behind reclamation,rehabilitation,restoration or all three—over time.Jennifer Firn Jodi N Price Ralph DB Whalley 2013Ecological Processes2013,2,1:2
