| 1 | Chinese deserts and sand fields in Last Glacial Maximum and Holocene Optimum显示文摘The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, c. 26-16 ka) and the Holocene Optimum (HO, c. 9-5 ka) were characterized by cold-dry and warm-wet climates respectively in the recently geological Earth. How Chinese deserts and sand fields responded to these distinctive climatic changes is still not clear, however. To reconstruct environments of the deserts and sand fields during the LGM and HO is helpful to understand the forcing mechanisms of environment change in this arid region, and to test paleoclimatic modeling results. Through our long-term field and laboratory investigations, 400 optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages and more than 100 depositional records in the Chinese deserts and sand fields were obtained; on the basis of these data, we reconstruct spatial distributions of the deserts and sand fields during the LGM and HO. Our results show that the sand fields of Mu Us, Hunshandake, Horqin and Hulun Buir in northern and northeastern China had expanded 25%, 37%, 38% and 270%, respectively, during the LGM; the sand fields of Gonghe in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau had expanded 20%, and the deserts of Badain Jaran, Tengger in central northern China had expanded 39% and 29% separately during the LGM; the deserts of Taklimakan, Gurbantünggüt and Kumtag in northwestern China had expanded 10%-20% respectively, compared to their modern areas. On the other hand, all of the sand fields were nearly completely covered by vegetation during the HO; the deserts in northwestern and central northern China were reduced by around 5%-20% in area during this time. Lakes in this arid region were probably expanded during the HO but this conclusion needs more investigation. Compared with the geological distributions of deserts and sand fields, human activity has clearly changed (expanded) the area of active sand dunes at the present time. | 2 | Sand harm in Taklimakan Desert highway and sand control显示文摘Re puted as a wonderful achievement of the world’s highway construction h istory, the Taklimakan Desert highway is now facing serious sand drift encroachment problems due to its 447-km-long passage of sand sea consist ing of crescent dunes, barchan chains, compound transverse dune ridges and co mplex megadunes. To solve some technical problems in the protection of the highway from sand drift encroachment, desert experts have been conductin g the theoretical and applied studies on sand movement laws; causes, severities and time-space differentiation of sand drift damages; and control ways in cluding mechanical, chemical and biological measures. In this paper the authors give an overall summary on the research contents and recent progress i n the control of sand drift damages in China and hold that the theoretica l research results and practices in the prevention of sand drift encr oachment on the cross-desert highway represent a breakthrough and has an epoch-making significance. | 4 | Status of hyperhomocysteinemia in China: results from the China Stroke High-risk Population Screening Program, 2018显示文摘A nationwide survey was conducted from October 2018 to September 2019 to assess the prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia(Hhcy)and its influencing factors in China.A standardized questionnaire was used to collect information.Hhcy was defined as the level of serum homocysteine(HCY)≥15.0µmol/L.The H-type hypertension(HHYP)was defined as hypertension with an elevated serum HCY(≥15.0µmol/L).Finally,110551 residents≥40 years of age from 31 provinces in the mainland of China were included.Overall,the median serum HCY level was 10.9µmol/L(interquartile range 7.9–15.1).A total of 28633 participants(25.9%)were defined as Hhcy.The Hhcy prevalence ranged from 7.9%in Shanghai to 56.8%in Tianjin.The data showed that serum HCY levels were associated with age,male gender,cigarette smoking,hypertension,diabetes,ethnicity,endurance in exercise(inverse),and fruit and vegetable intake(inverse).In addition,15486 participants were defined as HHYP,and the rate was 14.0%.HHYP was an independent predictor of stroke with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.752(95%CI 1.338–2.105).The geographical distribution pattern of the Hhcy epidemic reflects dynamic differences,and national strategies should be carried out to further improve the care of patients with Hhcy across China. | Wenjun Tu Feng Yan Baohua Chao Xunming Ji Longde Wang | 2021 | Frontiers of Medicine2021,15,6: | 12 |
| 5 | Relative importance of climate factors and human activities in impacting vegetation dynamics during 2000–2015 in the Otindag Sandy Land,northern China显示文摘In recent years, there has been increasing research interests in differentiating the relative importance of climate factors and human activities in impacting vegetation dynamics. In this study, based on residual trend method, we used MOD13A3(MODIS vegetation index product), MCD12Q1(MODIS land cover product) and meteorological datasets to differentiate the relative importance of climate factors and human activities in impacting vegetation dynamics during 2000–2015 in the Otindag Sandy Land, northern China. Results show that during the study period(2000–2015), the overall vegetation condition had improved in the Otindag Sandy Land. The driving forces of vegetation dynamics differed spatially in the whole study area over the study period. The area with vegetation degradation solely resulted from human activities accounted for 8.23% of the study area, while the area with vegetation degradation resulted from others(including climate factors and combination of climate factors and human activities) occupied 1.53%. The area with vegetation recovery benefitted from human activities occurred over 26.02% of the study area; the area benefitted from climate factors accounted for 23.69%; and the area benefitted from both climate factors and human activities occupied 37.74%. | 7 | A more consistent intraluminal rhesus monkey model of ischemic stroke显示文摘Endovascular surgery is advantageous in experimentally induced ischemic stroke because it causes fewer cranial traumatic lesions than invasive surgery and can closely mimic the pathophysiology in stroke patients. However, the outcomes are highly variable, which limits the accuracy of evaluations of ischemic stroke studies. In this study, eight healthy adult rhesus monkeys were randomized into two groups with four monkeys in each group: middle cerebral artery occlusion at origin segment(M1) and middle cerebral artery occlusion at M2 segment. The blood flow in the middle cerebral artery was blocked completely for 2 hours using the endovascular microcoil placement technique(1 mm × 10 cm)(undetachable), to establish a model of cerebral ischemia. The microcoil was withdrawn and the middle cerebral artery blood flow was restored. A reversible middle cerebral artery occlusion model was identified by hematoxylin-eosin staining, digital subtraction angiography, magnetic resonance angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and neurological evaluation. The results showed that the middle cerebral artery occlusion model was successfully established in eight adult healthy rhesus monkeys, and ischemic lesions were apparent in the brain tissue of rhesus monkeys at 24 hours after occlusion. The rhesus monkeys had symptoms of neurological deficits. Compared with the M1 occlusion group, the M2 occlusion group had lower infarction volume and higher neurological scores. These experimental findings indicate that reversible middle cerebral artery occlusion can be produced with the endovascular microcoil technique in rhesus monkeys. | 8 | Effects of aeolian processes on nutrient loss from surface soils and their significance for sandy desertification in Mu Us Desert, China: a wind tunnel approach显示文摘Mu Us Desert, a region with high aeolian activity, is at extremely high risk of sandy desertification. Using surface soil samples collected from Mu Us Desert of northern China, we evaluated the effects of aeolian processes on nutrient loss from surface soils by employing wind tunnel experiments. The experiments were conducted using free-stream wind velocities of 14, 16, 18 and 22 m/s. Our results showed that the fine particles(<50 μm in diameter; 12.28% of all transported materials) carrying large nutrient loadings were exported outside the study area by aeolian processes. After the erodible fine particles were transported away from the soil surfaces at low wind velocity(i.e. 14 m/s), the following relatively high wind velocity(i.e. 22 m/s) did not have any significant effect on nutrient export, because the coefficients of variation for soil organic matter, total phosphorus, total nitrogen and available potassium were usually <5%. | 9 | Sandy desertification: Borne on the wind显示文摘Sandy desertification is both an inherently interesting bioscience and geoscience topic and an important topic from the perspectives of the ecological environment and food security. It has therefore increasingly attracted the attention of the public, in addition to researchers, government officials, and international organizations. This paper reviews the development of knowledge on sandy desertification, research progress in understanding the physical and biological processes involved in sandy desertification, and the significance of wind activity in determining the increases and decreases in sandy desertification. | 10 | Temporal and Spatial Variations in the Climate Controls of Vegetation Dynamics on the Tibetan Plateau during 1982–2011显示文摘The ecosystem of the Tibetan Plateau is highly susceptible to climate change. Currently, there is little discussion on the temporal changes in the link between climatic factors and vegetation dynamics in this region under the changing climate.By employing Normalized Difference Vegetation Index data, the Climatic Research Unit temperature and precipitation data,and the in-situ meteorological observations, we report the temporal and spatial variations in the relationships between the vegetation dynamics and climatic factors on the Plateau over the past three decades. The results show that from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s, vegetation dynamics in the central and southeastern part of the Plateau appears to show a closer relationship with precipitation prior to the growing season than that of temperature. From the mid-1990s, the temperature rise seems to be the key climatic factor correlating vegetation growth in this region. The effects of increasing temperature on vegetation are spatially variable across the Plateau: it has negative impacts on vegetation activity in the southwestern and northeastern part of the Plateau, and positive impacts in the central and southeastern Plateau. | 14 | Cooling rate controlled basal precipitates and age hardening response of solid-soluted Mg-Gd-Er-Zn-Zr alloy显示文摘The precipitation and age hardening response of the solid-soluted Mg–10Gd–1Er–1Zn–0.6Zr(wt.%)alloy performed by water-quenching(QC),air-cooling(AC)and furnace-cooling(FC)in terms of the volume fraction of precipitates and tensile properties were investigated in present paper.Results indicated the solid-soluted alloy contained stacking faults(SFs)and long period stacking ordered(LPSO)phase on the basal planes regardless of the cooling rate,but a larger volume fraction of the LPSO phase was formed with decreasing in the cooling rate.After aging,βandβ1 phases precipitated on the prismatic planes,and their number density decreased but mean particle size increased with decreasing in the cooling rate.The solid-soluted alloys(QC,AC and FC samples)showed no apparent difference in yield strength(YS),but their correspondent peak-aged alloys exhibited sharp difference in hardening response.The strongest hardening response took place in the QC sample and showed 82MPa enhancement in YS,which was much larger than that of AC(+26MPa)and FC samples(+5MPa).The reason lies in that the higher cooling rate promotes the precipitation and reduces the average size ofβprecipitate.A novel cooling-rate controlled precipitation model with respect to the correlation of precipitates on basal and prismatic planes was established.From this model,the basal precipitates showed a restrictive effect on the growth and/or coarsening ofβprecipitate,and composite precipitates containing theβphase with fine size as well as high area-number density and lower volume fraction of the LPSO phase are preferred to strengthen the Mg–10Gd–1Er–1Zn–0.6Zr alloy. | Jinlong Fu Wenbo Du Linyue Jia Yunfeng Wang Xunming Zhu Xian Du | 2021 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2021,9,4: | 3 |
