Holocene high lake-levels and pan-lake period on Badain Jaran Desert显示文摘Many lakes exist in southeastern Badain Jaran Desert and its hinterland, including 110 perennial lakes and some seasonal or extinct lakes. Geomorphological, sedimentological, and bioglyph evidence obtained from field investigations on Badain Jaran Desert lake group, alongside measurements and dating performed on lake relic, prove that these lakes expanded while the climate was relatively wet during early and middle Holocene. The dating results suggest that the pan-lake period of the Badain Jaran Desert began at 10 cal kyr BP, before which the limnic peat period occurred(11–10 cal kyr BP). Many lakes reached their maximal water-level during 8.6–6.3 cal kyr BP and retreated or dried up in the late Holocene(about 3.5–0 cal kyr BP). During that period, the precipitation at Badain Jaran Desert may have reached 200 mm yr^(-1) for 7.7–5.3 cal kyr BP, inferred from both the age and precipitation rate of calcareous root tubes. The water balance calculation shows that wetter and warmer climate and the increase of underground water recharge were key factors in maintaining and developing the lake group at both centennial and millennial time scales. Furthermore, lake surface expansion and the increasing fresh water availability set the background for the prosperous prehistoric culture.WANG NaiAng NING Kai LI ZhuoLun WANG YiXin JIA Peng MA Ling 2016Science China Earth Sciences2016,59,8:19
Holocene palynological records and their responses to the controversies of climate system in the Shiyang River drainage basin显示文摘The Shiyang River drainage basin is located in the northwest margin of the Asian monsoon region. Previous studies reached different conclusions about Holocene climatic changes in the basin. Some studies suggested the Holocene climatic changes were mainly controlled by the Asian monsoon and that the climate was relatively humid during the early Holocene (11.6-7.1 cal ka BP). Other studies found the mid-Holocene Climatic Optimum (7.0-5.0 cal ka BP), and this climate condition was similar to the Holocene westerly wind pattern in arid Central Asia. The modern climate is affected by the Asian monsoon and westerly wind in the drainage basin, and the Holocene climatic records showed two different Holocene climatic patterns-a westerly wind pattern and monsoonal pattern. However, it remains unclear what caused the two different Holocene climatic patterns to co-exist in the region. The palynological records are the main evidence for the Holocene climatic changes in the basin. This paper focuses on palynological records for different parts of the drainage basin. Among them, QTH02, QTL-03 and Sanjiaocheng records are located in the terminal lake, and the Hongshuihe record is located in the middle reaches of the basin. In the terminal lake, the palynological records of QTH02 and QTL-03 are similar, but the Sanjiaocheng record differs. The difference is mainly affected by the variable pollen assemblages in the different locations of the lake basin. From comparison and synthesis of the four palynological records, we concluded that the millennial-scale Holocene climatic changes were affected by the combined effects of the Asian monsoon and westerly wind in the drainage basin, which show the complicated Holocene climatic pattern in the northwest margin of the Asian monsoon.LI Yu WANG NaiAng LI ZhuoLun ZHANG HuaAn 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,6:18
Observation of mega-dune evaporation after various rain events in the hinterland of Badain Jaran Desert, China显示文摘The formation mechanisms of the mega-dunes and lakes in the hinterland of Badain Jaran Desert,China,is the focus of extensive academic research in the field of geoscience, and an often debated topic is whether atmospheric precipitation on the mega-dune can infiltrate to recharge groundwater. In the present study, the probability distribution functions and the return period analysis of extreme daily precipitation based on long-term precipitation records for the southern margin of Badain Jaran Desert and 2-year observation of hinterland precipitation were used to classify precipitation in the desert region. The data of automatic weather station and eddy covariance system in the desert hinterland were used to analyze evaporation on the mega-dune surface after various rain events. The results showed that the rain events in the desert could be divided into three categories. The first is conventional precipitation(CP),which is below 5 mm,accounting for roughly 90%of all rain events in the desert. The second and third categories are ordinary annual maximum(OAM)and extreme precipitation(EP),in which precipitation is roughly 20 mm and more than 40 mm,respectively. The atmospheric precipitation of CP and OAM evaporated from the megadune surface in 1–3 days and 3–4 weeks, respectively.Following an EP event, the mega-dune evaporation was negatively influenced by the upper dry sand layer, and a lengthy period was required for its complete removal. The accumulative evaporation and accumulative precipitation of all three types of rain events indicated that local atmospheric precipitation had no significant contribution to recharging the groundwater system in the hinterland of Badain Jaran Desert. This research will benefit comprehensive elucidation of the formation mechanism of lakes in the hinterland of Badain Jaran Desert.Ning Ma Naiang Wang Liqiang Zhao Zhenyu Zhang Chunyu Dong Shiping Shen 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,2:14
High lake levels on Alxa Plateau during the Late Quaternary显示文摘Field investigations including lake shoreline measurement and 14 C chronology have been carried out on the Alxa Plateau to better understand the formation and evolution of the high lake levels in northwest China during the late Pleistocene.Comprehensive field investigations show that there are at least ten shorelines at different elevations at Juyan Lake,at least four on the northwest side of the Jilantai Salt Lake, and nine shorelines and one terrace on the northeast margin of Zhuye Lake.Stratigraphic correlations and chronological evidence indicate that the paleo-lakes have the highest lake levels in Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3.Though the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) results which have been reported by some scholars do not support this view, the fact that the paleo-lakes have the highest lake levels in MIS 3 can not be denied.Differences between OSL and 14 C results from this work might indicate that high lake levels existed on the Alxa Plateau during two different periods. It also suggests that the high lake levels may exist in both MIS 5 and early MIS 3.This paper also provides the basic hydrological information for further water resources research in this arid region.WANG NaiAng LI ZhuoLun CHENG HongYi LI Yu HUANG YinZhou 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,17:12
Hydrochemical characteristics and recharge sources of Lake Nuoertu in the Badain Jaran Desert显示文摘We present a case study of physical and chemical indicators and isotope characteristics of Lake Nuoertu, one of the largest and deepest lakes of the Badain Jaran Desert. We analyze the concentrations of eight ions, total dissolved solids, and stable isotope composition of the lake and groundwater,as well as radioactive isotope tritium concentration in groundwater. The results show that annual and seasonal variations of the physical and chemical characteristics of Lake Nuoertu water are significantly greater than those of groundwater. The lake is uniformly mixed in the horizontal and vertical directions, and the hydrochemical types of the lake at different depths are consistent for Na–Cl–CO3–(SO4).Stable isotope composition of the lake and groundwater at Nuoertu is distributed along the local evaporation line(EL)slope, which is less than the slope of the global meteoric water line. The comparatively small slope shows the characteristic strong evaporation in the study area.Lake water isotopes are mostly in the upper right corner of the EL,whereas groundwater is mostly in the lower left corner. The main recharge source of Nuoertu lake water is groundwater,in combination with lake water and groundwater level change. The age of tufa springs around Nuoertu is about75–80 a,which shows that the initial recharge source of the lake is a mix between modern and 1952 or older;however, further research is required.Yue Wu Naiang Wang Liqiang Zhao Zhenyu Zhang Li Chen Ying Lu Xiaonan L Jinlong Chang 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,9:12
Reworking effects in the Holocene Zhuye Lake sediments:A case study by pollen concentrates AMS ^(14)C dating显示文摘Transported by wind and water, the relatively old sediments can deposit in the terminal lake of an inland drainage basin. The reworking effect can affect the lake sediments 14 C dating and explanations for proxies. The Zhuye Lake is the terminal lake of the Shiyang River Basin.Previous studies indicated that sediments in different locations of the lake basin showed different climatic change patterns. And then, some radiocarbon dates were inverted for some Late Pleistocene sections.Whether this phenomenon is related with the reworking effect? The pollen concentrates 14 C dating can avoid the reservoir effect, which is an ideal method for studying the reworking effect. In this study,we used the pollen concentrates as dating materials and dated five Holocene sections in the Zhuye Lake Basin.Based on the 14 C dates comparison between the pollen concentrates, organic matter, and shells, the pollen concentrates dates are relatively older than other dating materials.Based on the result, the reworking effect worked in the Zhuye Lake Basin during the Holocene;however,in different locations of the lake basin the reworking effects were in different levels.Furthermore, the Holocene lacustrine deposits were formed mostly during the early and middle Holocene. This study provided clues for reworking effect studies of other lakes in arid China.LIYu WANG NaiAng LI ZhuoLun ZHANG ChengQi ZHOU XueHua 2012Science China Earth Sciences2012,55,10:7
Early Holocene environment at a key location of the northwest boundary of the Asian summer monsoon: a synthesis on chronologies of Zhuye Lake, Northwest China显示文摘The intensified monsoon increases summer rainfall and creates wet conditions in the Asian summer monsoon region during the early Holocene. Along with millennial-scale changes of the monsoon intensity, it is still unclear whether the boundary of the monsoon region changes according to monsoon variability. Investigations into the early Holocene environment in monsoon marginal zones are crucial for understanding the monsoon boundary changes. Zhuye Lake is located at the northwest edge of the Asian summer monsoon, the northern Qilian Mountains, which are less affected by modern summer monsoon water vapor. Previous studies have reached different conclusions regarding the early Holocene climatic and environmental changes based on different dating methods(14C and OSL(optically stimulated luminescence)) and materials(shells, carbonate, pollen concentrates and bulk organic carbon). In this study, we synthesized 102 14C dates and 35 OSL dates from ten Holocene sedimentary sections and ten paleo-shorelines in the lake basin. A comparison between ages from different dating methods and materials generally shows that carbon reservoir effects are relatively slight in Zhuye Lake while the disordered chronologies are mainly related to the erosion processes and reworking effects. In addition, proxy data, including lithology, pollen, total organic carbon and carbonate, were collected from different sites of Zhuye Lake. According to the new synthesis, the early Holocene environment was relatively humid, associated with high runoff and lake water levels. The result indicates that the monsoon boundary moves to the north during the period of the intensified monsoon. A typical arid-area lake was formed during the mid-Holocene when carbonate accumulation and high organic matter contents were the main features of this period. The lake retreated strongly during the late Holocene, showing a drought trend. Overall, the lake evolution is generally consistent with the Holocene Asian summer monsoon change, showing the monsoon influence to monsoon marginal zones.Yu LI NaiAng WANG ChengQi ZHANG Yue WANG 2014Journal of Arid Land2014,6,5:6
Lake Area Changes and the main causes in the hinterland of Badain Jaran Desert during 1973–2010,China显示文摘Lake area information in the Badain Jaran Desert in 1973,1990,2000,and 2010 was obtained by visual interpretation and water index analysis of remote sensing images, based on the spatial and temporal characteristics of lake area changes during 37 years. Results indicated that the number of lakes declined from 94 to 82 and the total surface area was reduced by 3.69 km2during1973–2010.The desert lake area reduced by different degrees in different periods, but this occurred most rapidly during1973–1990.According to the statistics of lake area changes, lake area decreases mainly occurred in the lakes with areas less than0.2 km2,while the areas of lakes greater than 0.9 km2only fluctuated. The changes of lake areas were probably due to changes in the quantity of underground water supplies rather than the effects of local climate change or human factors.ZhenYu Zhang NaiAng Wang Ning Ma Yue Wu 2014Research in Cold and Arid Regions2014,6,1:4

Historical desertification of the Mu Us Sandy Land: A perspective from the Beidachi section显示文摘Historical desertification of the Mu Us Sandy Land is linked to both environmental changes and anthropogenic activities. This paper reports on an analysis of grain size parameters as indicative of such changes in the southwestern area of the Mu Us Sandy Land. Combined with analysis of chronologies and historical records, our results indicate that Beidachi Lake and a nearby seasonal river have retreated continuously in history and that sand dunes appeared at approximately the end of the Ming dynasty. This study sheds new light on the understanding of spatial-temporal changes of the interior Mu Us Sandy Land in history and has great significance in revealing environmental changes of the interior region of the Mu Us Sandy Land.YinZhou Huang NaiAng Wang HongYi Cheng Ning Ma TingTing Lai 2013Research in Cold and Arid Regions2013,5,3:1

Mid-Holocene Climate Variations Recorded by Palaeolake in Marginal Area of East Asian Monsoon: A Multi-proxy Study显示文摘Traditionally, the mid-Holocene in most parts of China was thought to be warmer with higher precipitation, resulting from a strong Asian summer monsoon. However, some recent researches have proposed a mid-Holocene drought interval of millennial-scale in East Asian monsoon margin areas. Thus whether mid-Holocene was dry or humid remains an open issue. Here, Zhuyeze palaeolake, the terminal lake of the Shiyang River Drainage lying in Asian monsoon marginal areas, was selected for reconstructing the details of climate variations during the Holocene, especially mid-Holocene, on the basis of a sedimentological analysis. Qingtu Lake (QTL) section of 6.92m depth was taken from Zhuyeze palaeolake. Multi-proxy analysis of QTL section, including grain size, carbonate, TOC, C/N and δ13C of organic matter, was used to document regional climatic changes during 9-3 cal ka B.P. The record shows a major environmental change at 9.0-7.8 cal ka B.P., attributed to a climate trend towards warmth and humidity. This event was followed by a typical regional drought event which occurred during 7.8-7.5 cal ka B.P. And a warm and humid climate prevailed from 7.5 to 5.0 cal ka B.P., attributed to the warm/humid Holocene Optimum in this region. After that, the climate gradually became drier. Moreover, comparison of the climate record from this paper with the summer insolation at 30°N indicates that the climate pattern reflecting the Asian monsoon changes was caused by insolation change.LONG Hao TAN Hongbin WANG Naiang TAN Liangcheng LI Yu 2007Chinese Geographical Science2007,17,4:1

Influential factors on the repose angle of desert sands显示文摘The repose angle is one of the most significant macroscopic parameters in describing the behavior of granular materials.Under a static condition, the repose angle is the steepest angle at which sediment particles can rest without motion. In this paper,we use existing data and aeolian physics to analyze the main factors that influence the repose angle of sand dunes, and we investigate dif-ferent repose angles involving various states and types of materials. We have determined that different factors have differential in-fluence on the magnitude of the repose angle. Our results show that for powdery(<400-μm diameter) desert sands, the main in-fluential factor on the magnitude of repose angle is the molecular force among particles.Particle size does not influence the repose angle of desert sands directly, but has an indirect impact by affecting the grit sphericity and surface roughness,of which the grit sphericity acts as a major factor.Even at the same average particle size, the repose angle differs with different grain compositions.Furthermore, with increasing unevenness in grain composition, the repose angle increases correspondingly.Sand texture also has a direct influence on the repose angle of desert sands. In two sand samples having the same grain composition but different textures, the repose angles may be different.Water content has a stronger influence on the repose angle than any other factor. However, the relationship between the repose angle and water content is not a simple direct proportion. In fact, with increasing water content, the repose angle first increases and then decreases. These research results will be useful for understanding the mechanisms of dune transport, variations of dune morphology, and the stability and fluidity of dune sands.JianBao Liu NaiAng Wang HongYi Cheng WenTao Yang 2011Research in Cold and Arid Regions2011,3,1:0
Relationship between pollen assemblages and organic geochemical proxies and the response to climate change in the Zhuye Lake sediments显示文摘This paper examines the relationship among organic geochemical proxies(TOC,C/N ratio andδ13C)and pollen assemblages in Zhuye Lake sediments since the Late Glacial. Results show that the reaction extent of organic geochemical proxies and pollen assemblages to environment changes are different.Organic geochemical proxies are sensitive to overall environmental change, while pollen assemblages indicate detailed information of environmental change. For the entire sedimentary section(except the sand layer from the bottom of the section),when values of TOC,C/N ratio and total pollen concentrations are high,δ13C values are low,and vice versa. The different responses of organic geochemical proxies and pollen records in Zhuye Lake are mainly due to their different sensitivity and diverse influencing factors in different environmental conditions.Yu Li XueHua Zhou ChengQi Zhang ZhuoLun Li Yue Wang NaiAng Wang 2014Research in Cold and Arid Regions2014,6,1:0
