Abiotic and Biotic Stresses and Changes in the Lignin Content and Composition in Plants显示文摘Lignin is a polymer of phenylpropanoid compounds formed through a complex biosynthesis route, represented by a metabolic grid for which most of the genes involved have been sequenced in several plants, mainly in the model-plants Arabidopsis thaliana and Populus.Plants are exposed to different stresses, which may change lignin content and composition. In many cases, particularly for plant-microbe interactions, this has been suggested as defence responses of plants to the stress. Thus, understanding how a stressor modulates expression of the genes related with lignin biosynthesis may allow us to develop study-models to increase our knowledge on the metabolic control of lignin deposition in the cell wall. This review focuses on recent literature reporting on the main types of abiotic and biotic stresses that alter the biosynthesis of lignin in plants. | Jullyana Cristina Magalhaes Silva Moura Cesar Augusto Valencise Bonine Juliana de Oliveira Fernandes Viana Marcelo Carnier Dornelas Paulo Mazzafera | 2010 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2010,52,4: | 45
Radiofrequency ablation for treatment of hypersplenism: A feasible therapeutic option显示文摘We present a case of a patient with hypersplenism secondary to portal hypertension due to hepato-splenic schistosomiasis, which was accompanied by severe and refractory thrombocytopenia. We performed spleen ablation and measured the total spleen and ablated volumes with contrast-enhanced computed tomography and volumetry. No major complications occurred, thrombocytopenia was resolved, and platelet levels remained stable, which allowed for early treatment of the patient's underlying disease. Previous work has shown that splenic radiofrequency ablation is an attractive alternative treatment for hypersplenism induced by liver cirrhosis. We aimed to contribute to the currently sparse literature evaluating the role of radiofrequency ablation(RFA) in the management of hypersplenism. We conclude that splenic RFA appears to be a viable and promising option for the treatment of hypersplenism. | Guilherme Lopes P Martins Joao Paulo G Bernardes Marcello S Rovella Raphael G Andrade Publio Cesar C Viana Paulo Herman Giovanni Guido Cerri Marcos Roberto Menezes | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,20: | 17

Physical activity in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease:Overview updated显示文摘Although the observed progress in the cardiovascular disease treatment, the incidence of new and recurrent coronary artery disease remains elevated and constitutes the leading cause of death in the developed countries. Three-quarters of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases could be prevented with adequate changes in lifestyle, including increased daily physical activity. New evidence confirms that there is an inverse dose-response relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular disease and mortality risk. However, participation in moderate to vigorous physical activity may not fully attenuate the independent effect of sedentary activities on increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. Physical activity also plays an important role in secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases by reducing the impact of the disease, slowing its progress and preventing recurrence. Nonetheless, most of eligible cardiovascular patients still do not benefit from secondary prevention/cardiac rehabilitation programs. The present review draws attention to the importance of physical activity in the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. It also addresses the mechanisms by which physical activity and regular exercise can improve cardiovascular health and reduce the burden of the disease. | Alberto J Alves Joao L Viana Suiane L Cavalcante Nórton L Oliveira JoséA Duarte Jorge Mota JoséOliveira Fernando Ribeiro | 2016 | World Journal of Cardiology2016,8,10: | 6
Innate and adaptive immune responses toward nanomedicines显示文摘Since the commercialization of the frst liposomes used for drug delivery,Doxil/Caelyx® and Myocet®,tremendous progress has been made in understanding interactions between nanomedicines and biological systems.Fundamental work at the interface of engineering and medicine has allowed nanomedicines to deliver therapeutic small molecules and nucleic acids more effciently. While nanomedicines are used in oncology for immunotherapy or to deliver combinations of cytotoxics, the clinical successes of gene silencing approaches like patisiran lipid complexes(Onpattro®)have paved the way for a variety of therapies beyond cancer. In parallel, the global severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)pandemic has highlighted the potential of mR NA vaccines to develop immunization strategies at unprecedented speed. To rationally design therapeutic and vaccines, chemists, materials scientists, and drug delivery experts need to better understand how nanotechnologies interact with the immune system. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the innate and adaptative immune systems and emphasizes the intricate mechanisms through which nanomedicines interact with these biological functions. | Iara Maíra de Oliveira Viana Sabrina Roussel Joan Defrêne Eliana Martins Lima Frédéric Barabé Nicolas Bertrand | 2021 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2021,11,4: | 5
How do altitude and soil properties influence the taxonomic and phylogenetic structure and diversity of Brazilian páramo vegetation?显示文摘Altitude and environmental variables such as edaphic properties are considered determinants of species distribution and community composition in mountain ecosystems. Here,we aimed to outline the effects of distinct mountain peaks, altitude and soil properties on community composition, species density, phylogenetic structure and diversity of angiosperm páramo communities from the Serra do Brigadeiro State Park,Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. For that,we identified all angiosperm species found in 300 plots(1 m×1 m)from three mountain peaks, measured soil depth and analyzed soil fertility and texture in each plot.To reduce the number of soil variables and species composition,we computed principal coordinates based on soil properties and principal coordinates based on species-plot matrix for each plot.Furthermore,we computed the standard effect sizes of the mean phylogenetic pairwise distance and the mean nearest phylogenetic taxon distance for each plot to investigate differences in the degree of relatedness among coexisting species. We compared differences in response variables between peaks and modelled them in function of altitude and principle components of soil properties using mixed effect models.Species density and phylogenetic diversity differed between peaks, but, contrary to the previous findings,no relationships between species richness or phylogenetic diversity and altitude or soil properties were found, indicating that further investigations are necessary to understand the altitude-biodiversity relationship in Brazilian páramo vegetation.Community composition differed between peaks and depended on altitude, soil properties and interactions between them, indicating that upward shifting of bioclimatic conditions due to climate changes may alter communities of this ecosystem.Phylogenetic structure differed between peaks and was influenced by altitude and soil properties. As phylogenetic clustering increased with altitude, eventual upward movements of species in Brazilian páramo vegetation due to climate change may alter community composition and the degree of relatedness among coexisting species, increasing the risk of species from higher altitudes to disappear. Therefore, conservation priorities arise for higher landscape portions, where these high altitude species may find refuges. | Markus GASTAUER Jan THIELE Stefan POREMBSKI Andreza Viana NERI | 2020 | Journal of Mountain Science2020,17,5: | 4
| Maria Emlha Gulmaraes Arelas Catarina I. | 8 | Gut-microbiome-brain axis:the crosstalk between the vagus nerve,alpha-synuclein and the brain in Parkinson's disease显示文摘This critical review of the literature shows that there is a close link between the microbiome, the gut,and the brain in Parkinson's disease. The vagus nerve, the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system,is involved in the regulation of immune response, digestion, heart rate, and control of mood.It can detect microbiota metabolites through its afferents, transferring this gut information to the central nervous system.Preclinical and clinical studies have shown the important role played by the gut microbiome and gut-related factors in disease development and progression,as well as treatment responses. These findings suggest that the gut microbiome may be a valuable target for new therapeutic strategies for Parkinson's disease.More studies are needed to better understand the underlying biology and how this axis can be modulated for the patient's benefit. | Júlio César Claudino dos Santos Leandro Freitas Oliveira Felipe Micelli Noleto Camilla Teixeira Pinheiro Gusmão Gerly Anne de Castro Brito Glauce Socorro de Barros Viana | 2023 | Neural Regeneration Research2023,18,12: | 2

Plant diversity and community structure of Brazilian Páramos显示文摘In Eastern South America, high altitude grasslands represent a mountain system that has a high number of endemic species. However, studies on the ecology of plant communities in these environments remain scarce. We aimed to evaluate the patterns of biodiversity and structure of plant communities from rocky outcrops in high altitude grasslands of three areas at the Caparaó National Park, southeastern Brazil, by sampling 300 randomly distributed plots. Then, we compared the floristic composition, relative abundance, and biological and vegetation spectra among areas. We classified species as endemic and non-endemic and verified the occurrence of endangered species. Species richness was evaluated by rarefaction analysis on the sampling units. The importance value and species abundance distribution(SAD) models were assessed. We also performed an indicator species analysis. We sampled 58 species belonging to 49 genera and 32 families. The number of species decreased with increasing altitude, with significant differences being observed among areas regarding richness, abundance, and cover. Of the total number of species, 10 are endemic to the Caparaó National Park and 17 are listed on the Brazilian Red List of endangered species. The dominant families on all peaks were Asteraceae and Poaceae. The SAD models showed lognormal and geometric distributions, corroborating the fact that 10 species that were common to all three areas were also the most dominant ones in the communities and showed the highest importance values, which ranged between 35% and 60%. Indicator species analysis revealed that 28 species(48.27%) were indicators. Of these, 42.85% had maximum specificity, meaning that they occurred only in one area. Thus, the number of species per life form ratio was similar among areas, yet vegetation spectra differed, especially for hemicryptophytes. The altimetric difference among the areas showed to be a very important driver in the community assembly, influencing the evaluated variables, however, other drivers as soil depth, slope and water could also influence the community structure on a smaller and local spatial scale. | prímula viana campos pedro manuel villa jaquelina alves nunes carlos e.g.r.schaefer stefan porembski andreza viana neri | 2018 | Journal of Mountain Science2018,15,6: | 2
Fine-scale habitat differentiation shapes the composition, structure and aboveground biomass but not species richness of a tropical Atlantic forest显示文摘Evaluating the influences of fine-scale habitat heterogeneity on the composition, diversity, structure and functioning of forests is critical to understand how tropical forests will respond to climate change and devise forest management strategies that will enhance biodiversity conservation and aboveground biomass stock. Here,we hypothesized that topographic and soil factors determine fine-scale habitat differentiation, which in turn shape community composition, species richness, structure and aboveground biomass at the local scale in tropical forests. To test this hypothesis,we selected two areas(each 100×100 m)with contrasting fine-scale topographic conditions where all trees, palms and lianas with a diameter at breast height ≥ 10 cm were tagged and identified to species. In each selected area,100 subplots of 10×10 m were established. We mainly found that higher topographic variability caused higher habitat differentiation with changes in species composition and community structure, but did not change species richness. Our habitat-scale analyses indicated that,in the less heterogeneous area, the distribution of species was more uniform along a fine-scale topographical gradient with no variation in convexity, which induced changes in structure and aboveground biomass, but not in species richness. The nonsignificant relationship between species richness and aboveground biomass may be attributable to species redundancy or functional dominance. This study suggests that environmental filtering is a fundamental process for shaping community assembly and forest functioning along a local topographical gradient in tropical forests. | Alice Cristina Rodrigues Pedro Manuel Villa Arshad Ali Walnir Ferreira-Junior Andreza Viana Neri | 2020 | Journal of Forestry Research2020,31,5: | 2
