| 1 | Toward a better understanding of microbiologically influenced corrosion caused by sulfate reducing bacteria显示文摘Sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB) are often the culprits of microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC) in anoxic environments because sulfate is a ubiquitous oxidant. MIC of carbon steel caused by SRB is the most intensively investigated topic in MIC because of its practical importance. It is also because biogenic sulfides complicate mechanistic SRB MIC studies, making SRB MIC of carbon steel is a long-lasting topic that has generated considerable confusions. It is expedient to think that biogenic H_2S secreted by SRB acidifies the broth because it is an acid gas. However, this is not true because endogenous H_2S gets its H^+ from organic carbon oxidation and the fluid itself in the first place rather than an external source. Many people believe that biogenic H_2S is responsible for SRB MIC of carbon steel. However, in recent years,well designed mechanistic studies provided evidence that contradicts this misconception. Experimental data have shown that cathodic electron harvest by an SRB biofilm from elemental iron via extracellular electron transfer(EET) for energy production by SRB is the primary cause. It has been demonstrated that when a mature SRB biofilm is subjected to carbon source starvation, it switches to elemental iron as an electron source and becomes more corrosive. It is anticipated that manipulations of EET related genes will provide genetic-level evidence to support the biocathode theory in the future. | 2 | Efficacy and safety of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in pregnancy for the prevention of vertical transmission of HBV infection显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the effects of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate(TDF)use during late pregnancy to reduce hepatitis B virus(HBV)transmission in highly viremic mothers.METHODS:This retrospective study included 45 pregnant patients with hepatitis B e antigen(+)chronic hepatitis B and HBV DNA levels>107copies/mL who received TDF 300 mg/d from week 18 to 27 of gestation(n=21).Untreated pregnant patients served as controls(n =24).All infants received 200 IU of hepatitis B immune globulin(HBIG)within 24 h postpartum and 20μg of recombinant HBV vaccine at 4,8,and 24 wk.Perinatal transmission rate was determined by hepatitis B surface antigen and HBV DNA results in infants at week 28.RESULTS:At week 28,none of the infants of TDFtreated mothers had immunoprophylaxis failure,whereas2(8.3%)of the infants of control mothers had immunoprophylaxis failure(P=0.022).There were no differences between the groups in terms of adverse events in mothers or congenital deformities,gestational age,height,or weight in infants.At postpartum week 28,significantly more TDF-treated mothers had levels of HBV DNA<250 copies/mL and normalized alanine aminotransferase compared with controls(62%vs none,P<0.001;82%vs 61%,P=0.012,respectively).CONCLUSION:TDF therapy during the second or third trimester reduced perinatal transmission rates of HBV and no adverse events were observed in mothers or infants. | Mustafa Kemal Celen Duygu Mert Müzeyyen Ay Tuba Dal Safak Kaya Necmettin Yildirim Serda Gulsun Tunga Barcin Sevgi Kalkanli Mehmet Sinan Dal Celal Ayaz | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013，19，48： | 26 |
| 3 | Speech and language therapy for aphasia following subacute stroke显示文摘The aim of this study was to investigate the time window, duration and intensity of optimal speech and language therapy applied to aphasic patients with subacute stroke in our hospital. The study consisted of 33 patients being hospitalized for stroke rehabilitation in our hospital with first stroke but without previous history of speech and language therapy. Sixteen sessions of impairment-based speech and language therapy were applied to the patients, 30–60 minutes per day, 2 days a week, for 8 successive weeks. Aphasia assessment in stroke patients was performed with Gülhane Aphasia Test-2 before and after treatment. Compared with before treatment, fluency of speech, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, oral motor evaluation, automatic speech, repetition and naming were improved after treatment. | 5 | Interobserver variation in histopathological assessment of Helicobacter pylori gastritis显示文摘AIM: Because the presence or absence of H pyloriinfection has important implications for therapeutic decisions based on histological assessment, the reproducibility of Sydneysystem is important. The study was designed to test the reproducibility of features of Helicobacter pylori gastritis, using the updated Sydney classification. METHODS: Gastric biopsies of 40 randomly selected cases of H pylori gastritis were scored semiquantitatively by three pathologists. Variables analysed included chronic inflammation,inflammatory activity, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, H pylori,surface epithelial damage. k values below 0.5 represented poor, those between 0.5 and 0.75 good and values over 0.75 excellent interobserver agreement. RESULTS: The best interobserver agreement (k=0.62) was present for intestinal metaplasia. The agreement was the poorest for evaluating atrophy (k=0.31). CONCLUSION: Although the results of this study were in accordance with some previous studies, an excellent agreement could not be reached for any features of H pylori gastritis. | 6 | A predictive score for retinopathy of prematurity by using clinical risk factors and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 levels显示文摘AIM: To detect the impact of insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) and other risk factors for the early prediction of retinopathy of prematurity(ROP) and to establish a scoring system for ROP prediction by using clinical criteria and serum IGF-1 levels.METHODS: The study was conducted with 127 preterm infants. IGF-1 levels in the 1 st day of life, 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th week of life was analyzed. The score was established after logistic regression analysis, considering the impact of each variable on the occurrences of any stage ROP. A validation cohort containing 107 preterm infants was included in the study and the predictive ability of ROP score was calculated.RESULTS: Birth weights(BW), gestational weeks(GW) and the prevalence of breast milk consumption were lower, respiratory distress syndrome(RDS), bronchopulmonarydysplasia(BPD) and necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC) were more frequent, the duration of mechanical ventilation and oxygen supplementation was longer in patients with ROP(P<0.05). Initial serum IGF-1 levels tended to be lower in newborns who developed ROP. Logistic regression analysis revealed that low BW(<1250 g), presence of intraventricular hemorrhage(IVH) and formula feeding increased the risk of ROP. Afterwards, the scoring system was validated on 107 infants. The negative predictive values of a score less than 4 were 84.3%, 74.7% and 79.8% while positive predictive values were 76.3%, 65.5% and 71.6% respectively.CONCLUSION: In addition to BW <1250 g and IVH, formula consumption was detected as a risk factor for the development of ROP. | 7 | Effect of glycyrrhizic acid and 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid on the differentiation of human umbilical cord-mesenchymal stem cells into hepatocytes显示文摘BACKGROUND End-stage liver disease is a global health complication with high prevalence and limited treatment options.Cell-based therapies using mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)emerged as an alternative approach to support hepatic regeneration.In vitro preconditioning strategies have been employed to strengthen the regenerative and differentiation potential of MSCs towards hepatic lineage.Chemical compounds of the triterpene class;glycyrrhizic acid(GA)and 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid(GT)possess diverse therapeutic properties including hepatoprotection and anti-fibrosis characteristics.They are capable of modulating several signaling pathways that are crucial in hepatic regeneration.Preconditioning with hepato-protective triterpenes may stimulate MSC fate transition towards hepatocytes.AIM To explore the effect of GA and GT on hepatic differentiation of human umbilical cord-MSCs(hUC-MSCs).METHODS hUC-MSCs were isolated and characterized phenotypically by flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry for the expression of MSC-associated surface molecules.Isolated cells were treated with GA,GT,and their combination for 24 h and then analyzed at three time points;day 7,14,and 21.qRT-PCR was performed for the expression of hepatic genes.Expression of hepatic proteins was analyzed by immunocytochemistry at day 21.Periodic acid Schiff staining was performed to determine the functional ability of treated cells.RESULTS The fusiform-shaped morphology of MSCs in the treatment groups in comparison with the untreated control,eventually progressed towards the polygonal morphology of hepatocytes with the passage of time.The temporal transcriptional profile of preconditioned MSCs displayed significant expression of hepatic genes with increasing time of differentiation.Preconditioned cells showed positive expression of hepatocyte-specific proteins.The results were further corroborated by positive periodic acid Schiff staining,indicating the presence of glycogen in their cytoplasm.Moreover,bi-nucleated cells,which is the typical feature of hepatocytes,were also seen in the preconditioned cells.CONCLUSION Preconditioning with glycyrrhizic acid,18β-glycyrrhetinic acid and their combination,successfully differentiates hUC-MSCs into hepatic-like cells.These MSCs may serve as a better therapeutic option for degenerative liver diseases in future. | Abiha Fatima Tuba Shakil Malick Irfan Khan Aisha Ishaque Asmat Salim | 2021 | World Journal of Stem Cells2021，13，10： | 3 |

| 9 | Delaying surgery after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy improves prognosis of rectal cancer显示文摘AIM To investigate the prognostic effect of a delayed interval between neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy(CRT) and surgery in locally advanced rectal cancer.METHODS We evaluated 87 patients with locally advanced mid-or distal rectal cancer undergoing total mesorectal excision following an interval period after neoadjuvant CRT at ?i?li Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital,Istanbul between January 2009 and January 2014.Patients were divided into two groups according to the intervalbefore surgery: < 8 wk(group Ⅰ) and ≥ 8 wk(group Ⅱ).Data related to patients,cancer characteristics and pathological examination were collected and analyzed.RESULTS When the distribution of timing between group Ⅰ(n = 45) and group Ⅱ(n = 42) was viewed,comparison of interval periods(median ± SD) of groups showed a significant difference of as 5 ± 1.28 wk in group Ⅰ and 10.1 ± 2.2 wk in group Ⅱ(P < 0.001).The median follow-up period for all patients was 34.5(9.9-81) mo.group Ⅱ had significantly higher rates of pathological complete response(p CR) than group Ⅰ had(19% vs 8.9%,P = 0.002).Rate of tumor regression grade(TRG) poor response was 44.4% in group Ⅰ and 9.5% in group Ⅱ(P < 0.002).A poor pathological response was associated with worse disease-free survival(P = 0.009).The interval time did not show any association with local recurrence(P = 0.79).CONCLUSION Delaying the neoadjuvant CRT-surgery interval may provide nodal down-staging,improve p CR rate,and decrease the rate of TRG poor response. | Mehmet Mihmanli Esin Kabul Gürbulak Ismail Ethem Akgün Mustafa Fevzi Celayir Pinar Yazici Deniz Tuncel Tuba Tülin Bek Ayhan Oz Sinan Omeroglu | 2016 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2016，8，9： | 3 |
