2Emerging flexible and wearable physical sensing platforms for healthcare and biomedical applications显示文摘There are now numerous emerging flexible and wearable sensing technologies that can perform a myriad of physical and physiological measurements.Rapid advances in developing and implementing such sensors in the last several years have demonstrated the growing significance and potential utility of this unique class of sensing platforms.Applications include wearable consumer electronics,soft robotics,medical prosthetics,electronic skin,and health monitoring.In this review,we provide a state-ofthe-art overview of the emerging flexible and wearable sensing platforms for healthcare and biomedical applications.We first introduce the selection of flexible and stretchable materials and the fabrication of sensors based on these materials.We then compare the different solid-state and liquid-state physical sensing platforms and examine the mechanical deformation-based working mechanisms of these sensors.We also highlight some of the exciting applications of flexible and wearable physical sensors in emerging healthcare and biomedical applications,in particular for artificial electronic skins,physiological health monitoring and assessment,and therapeutic and drug delivery.Finally,we conclude this review by offering some insight into the challenges and opportunities facing this field.Kenry Joo Chuan Yeo Chwee Teck Lim 2016Microsystems & Nanoengineering2016,2,1:17
3Buttress plate fixation of coronoid process fractures via a medial approach显示文摘Purpose:To assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of coronoid process fractures surgically managed with buttress plate fixation via a medial approach.Methods:A retrospective review of all coronoid fractures surgically fixed in our institution using a buttress plate technique via a medial approach between June 2012 and April 2015 by the senior author was performed.These fractures were all sizeable fractures contributing to persistent elbow instability in terrible triad or varus posteromedial rotatory instability injury patterns.A prospective telephone questionnaire was conducted to assess patient outcomes using the disabilities of the arm,shoulder and hand(DASH)score and Mayo hlbow performance score(MEPS).Results:Twelve patients were included in the study,comprising 10 males and 2 females with an average age of 39 years(range,19-72 years).Mean follow-up was 16 months(range.4-18 months).The average time to radiographic union was 4 months(range.3-7 months).Range of motion measurements at final follow-up were obtained in 11 out of 12 patients,with one patient defaulting follow-up.All 11 patients displayed a functional elbow range of motion of at least 30°-130°.with an average arc of motion of 130°(range.110°-140°).mean elbow flexion of 134°(range.110°-140°)and mean flexion contracture of 3°(range.0°-20°).The mean DASH score was 16(range.2.5-43.8)and the mean MEPS was 75(range.65-100).Complications observed included one patient with a superfic ial wound infection which resolved with a course of oral antibiotics and one patient with radiographic evidence of heterotopic ossification which was conservatively managed.No residual elbow instability was observed and no reoperations were performed.Conclusion:Buttress plate fixation via a medial approach of coronoid process fractures that contribute to persistent elbow instability represents a reliable method of treatment that produces satisfactory and predictable outcomes.Kelvin Kah Ho Lor Dong Hao Toon Andy Teck Huat Wee 2019Chinese Journal of Traumatology2019,22,5:9

5Recurrent giant fibrovascular polyp of the esophagus显示文摘Giant fibrovascular polyps of the esophagus and hypopharynx are rare benign esophageal tumors. They arise most commonly in the upper esophagus and may, rarely, originate in the hypopharynx. They can vary significantly in size. Even though they are benign, they may be lethal due to either bleeding or, rarely, asphyxiation if a large polyp is regurgitated. Patients commonly present with dysphagia or hematemesis. The polyps may not be well visualized on endoscopy and imaging plays a vital role in aiding diagnosis as well as providing important information for preoperative planning, such as the location of the pedicle, the vascularity of the polyp and the tissue elements of the mass. They can also be recurrent in rare cases, especially if the resection margins of the base are involved. 6Attenuation of rock blasting induced ground vibration in rock-soil interface显示文摘Blasting has been widely used in mining and construction industries for rock breaking.This paper presents the results of a series of field tests conducted to investigate the ground wave propagation through mixed geological media.The tests were conducted at a site in the northwestern part of Singapore composed of residual soil and granitic rock.The field test aims to provide measurement data to better understand the stress wave propagation in soil/rock and along their interface.Triaxial accelerometers were used for the free field vibration monitoring.The measured results are presented and discussed,and empirical formulae for predicting peak particle velocity (PPV) attenuation along the ground surface and in soil/rock were derived from the measured data.Also,the ground vibration attenuation across the soil-rock interface was carefully examined,and it was found that the PPV of ground vibration was decreased by 37.2% when it travels from rock to soil in the vertical direction.Bhagya Jayasinghe Zhiye Zhao Anthony Goh Teck Chee Hongyuan Zhou Yilin Gui 2019Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2019,11,4:7
7A topologically substituted boron nitride hybrid aerogel for highly selective CO2 uptake显示文摘A topologically mediated synthesis of porous boron nitride aerogel has been experimentally and theoretically investigated for carbon dioxide (CO2)uptake. 8Comparative studies of versatile extracellular proteolytic activities of lactic acid bacteria and their potential for extracellular amino acid productions as feed supplements显示文摘Background:Increasing understanding on the functions of amino acids (AA) has led to new commercial applications and expansion of the worldwide markets.However,the current technologies rely heavily on non-food grade microorganism and chemical synthesis for the production of AA.Several studies reported that lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have the capability of producing AA owing to their well-established proteolytic system and amino acid biosynthesis genes.Hence,the objectives of this study were to explore the extracellular proteolytic activity of LAB isolated from various Malaysian fermented foods and their potential to produce AA extracellularly as feed supplements.Results:All the studied LAB isolates were versatile extracellular protease producers,whereby extracellular protease activities were detected from acidic to alkaline pH (pH 5,pH 6.5,pH 8) using qualitative and quantitative proteolytic assays.The highest proteolytic activity at pH 5 (15.76 U/mg) and pH 8 (19.42 U/mg) was achieved by Lactobacillus plantarum RG14,while Lactobacillus plantarum RS5 exhibited the highest proteolytic activity of 17.22 U/mg at pH 6.5.As for the results of AA production conducted in de Man,Rogosa and Sharpe medium and analysed by high pressure liquid chromatography system,all LAB isolates were capable of producing an array of AA.Generally,Pediococcus sp.showed greater ability for AA production as compared to Lactobacillus sp.Moreover,the studied LAB were able to produce a few major feed supplement AA such as methionine,lysine,threonine and tryptophan.P.pentosaceus TL-3 recorded the highest methionine and threonine productivity of 3.72 mg/L/h and 5.58 mg/L/h respectively.However,L.plantarum I-UL4 demonstrated a lysine productivity of 1.24 mg/L/h,while P.acidilactici TP-6 achieved up to 1.73 mg/L/h of tryptophan productivity.Conclusion:All the 17 studied LAB isolates possessed versatile extracellular proteolytic system and have vast capability of producing various amino acids including a few major feed supplement AA such as methionine,lysine,threonine and tryptophan.Despite AA production was strain dependent,the studied LAB isolates possessed vast potential and can be exploited further as a bio-agent or an alternative amino acids and bioactive peptide producers.Ye Heng Lim Hooi Ling Foo Teck Chwen Loh Rosfarizan Mohamad Norhani Abdullah 2019Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2019,10,3:5

10Photon momentum transfer in inhomogeneous dielectric mixtures and induced tractor beams显示文摘The determination of optical force as a consequence of momentum transfer is inevitably subject to the use of the proper momentum density and stress tensor.It is imperative and valuable to consider the intrinsic scheme of photon momentum transfer,particularly when a particle is embedded in a complex dielectric environment.Typically,we consider a particle submerged in an inhomogeneous background composed of different dielectric materials,excluding coherent illumination or hydrodynamic effects.A ray-tracing method is adopted to capture the direct process of momentum transfer from the complex background medium,and this approach is validated using the modified Einstein–Laub method,which uses only the interior fields of the particle in the calculation.In this way,debates regarding the calculation of the force with different stress tensors using exterior fields can be avoided.Our suggested interpretation supports only the Minkowski approach for the optical momentum transfer to the embedded scatterer while rejecting Peierls’s and Abraham’s approaches,though the momentum of a stably moving photon in a continuous background medium should be considered to be of the Abraham type.Our interpretation also provides a novel method of realizing a tractor beam for the exertion of negative force that offers an alternative to the use of negative-index materials,optical gain,or highly non-paraxial or multiple-light interference.Cheng-Wei Qiu Weiqiang Ding MRCMahdy Dongliang Gao Tianhang Zhang Fook Chiong Cheong Aristide Dogariu Zheng Wang Chwee Teck Lim 2015Light(Science & Applications)2015,4,1:3

12Rational Design and Application of an Indolium-Derived Heptamethine Cyanine with Record-Long Second Near-Infrared Emission显示文摘Heptamethine cyanine dyes,typified by indocyanine green,have been extensively employed as bioimaging indicators and theranostic agents.Significant efforts have been made to develop functional heptamethine cyanine dyes with outstanding bioimaging and theranostic utilities.In this work,we rationally designed and successfully developed a novel indolium-like heptamethine cyanine dye by installing indolium-derived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on the terminal ends of a conjugated polyene backbone.This dye showed excellent photostability and showed bright fluorescent emission in the second near-infrared(NIR-Ⅱ)window with a peak at approximately 1120 nm.Such long wavelength emission prompted a superior bioimaging resolution in vivo.In particular,this NIR-Ⅱ dye had the remarkable capability of marking the blood vessels of the hindlimbs,abdomens,and brains of mice.More significantly,this dye involved a typical indolium-like heptamethine skeleton and exhibited two strong absorption bands in the 700–1300 nm NIR range,which endowed it with an intrinsic tumor-targeting capability and a high photothermal conversion efficiency(up to 68.2%),serving for the photothermal therapy of tumors under the guidance of NIR-Ⅱ fluorescence imaging.This work provides an efficient design strategy for achieving indolium-like heptamethine cyanine dyes with further NIR-Ⅱ emission.Xiaoxie Ma Yurou Huang Syed Ali Abbas Abedi Heejeong Kim Tan Teck Boon Davin Xiaogang Liu Wen-Chao Yang Yao Sun Sheng Hua Liu Jun Yin Juyoung Yoon Guang-Fu Yang 2022CCS Chemistry2022,4,6:2

15Functional micro‐concrete 3D hybrid structures f abricated by two‐photon polymerization显示文摘Arbitrary micro-scale three-dimensional(3D)structures fabrication is a dream to achieve many exciting goals that have been pursued for a long time.Among all these applications,the direct 3D printing to fabricate human organs and integrated photonic circuits are extraordinary attractive as they can promote the current technology to a new level.Among all the 3D printing methods available,two-photon polymerization(2PP)is very competitive as it is the unique method to achieve sub-micron resolution to make any desired tiny structures.For the conventional 2PP,the building block is the photoresist.However,the requirement for the building block is different for different purposes.It is very necessary to investigate and improve the photoresist properties according to different requirements.In this paper,we presented one hybrid method to modify the mechanical strength and light trapping efficiency of the photoresist,which transfers the photoresist into the micro-concretes.The micro-concrete structure can achieve±22%strength modification via a silica nano-particles doping.The structures doped with gold nano-particles show tunable plasmonic absorption.Dye doped hybrid structure shows great potential to fabricate 3D micro-chip laser.Yang Li Lianwei Chen Fang Kong Zuyong Wang Ming Dao Chwee Teck Lim Fengping Li Minghui Hong 2017光电工程2017,44,4:2
16Reliability analysis of geotechnical infrastructures: Introduction显示文摘In the design of geotechnical infrastructure,engineers have to deal with naturally occurring soils and rocks which are subjected to spatial variability as well as other uncertainties such as errors in measurement and in modeling methods.Reliability assessment which provides a systematic approach for quantifying the risk of failure has been shown to be a promising tool for solving these challenging geotechnical engineering problems.The method provides a more consistent measure of the level of safety or“structural reliability”through the evaluation of a reliability index and the associated“failure”probability,and is a method that satisfies the need to clearly convey safety issues to the public and regulatory authorities.Various methods for calculating the reliability of geotechnical infrastructures with regard to the assessment of the ultimate and serviceability limit states have been proposed by many researchers and these approaches include:the direct Monte Carlo Simulation,Bayesian and other sampling techniques,the first-order reliability method and the second-order reliability method,the random field method,the response surface method and other surrogate models with the related probabilistic procedures.In this special issue of Geoscience Frontiers,we assemble eleven invited papers which provide insights on the latest developments and challenges in applying probabilistic and reliability methods to geotechnical infrastructure design.Wengang Zhang Anthony Teck Chee Goh 2018Geoscience Frontiers2018,9,6:2
