| 1 | Why are Nitrogen Concentrations in Plant Tissues Lower under Elevated CO_2? A Critical Examination of the Hypotheses显示文摘Plants grown under elevated atmospheric CO2 typically have decreased tissue concentrations of N compared with plants grown under current ambient CO2.The physiological mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon have not been definitely established,although a considerable number of hypotheses have been advanced to account for it.In this review we discuss and critically evaluate these hypotheses.One contributing factor to the decreases in tissue N concentrations clearly is dilution of N by increased photosynthetic assimilation of C.In addition,studies on intact plants show strong evidence for a general decrease in the specific uptake rates (uptake per unit mass or length of root) of N by roots under elevated CO2.This decreased root uptake appears likely to be the result both of decreased N demand by shoots and of decreased ability of the soil-root system to supply N.The best-supported mechanism for decreased N supply is a decrease in transpiration-driven mass flow of N in soils due to decreased stomatal conductance at elevated CO2,although some evidence suggests that altered root system architecture may also play a role.There is also limited evidence suggesting that under elevated CO2,plants may exhibit increased rates of N loss through volatilization and/or root exudation,further contributing to lowering tissue N concentrations. | Daniel R. | 2 | Grazing effects on herbage nutritive values depend on precipitation and growing season in Inner Mongolian grassland显示文摘Aims Grasslands are widely used for production of livestock,which depend on the nutritive value of herbage species.However,there are still large uncertainties as to how grazing,precipitation and growing season interactively affect herbage nutritive value.Methods Here,based on a grazing experiment with seven grazing intensities in an Inner Mongolian grassland since the year 2005,we analysed nutritive value of four dominant grass species from June to September in both a relatively wetter year(2008)and a drier year(2010).Herbage with high nutritive value is characterized by high concentration of crude protein,high concentration of cellulase digestible organic matter and low concentration of neutral detergent fibre.Important Findings We found that(i)grazing significantly increased the nutritive value of Leymus chinensis,Agropyron michnoi and Cleistogenes squarrosa but had minor effects on the nutritive value of Stipa grandis.(ii)For all species,nutritive values were greater in the wetter year than in the drier year and were greatest in the early growing season(June)and lowest at the end of the growing season(September).Inter-annual and inter-seasonal variations in nutritive value were much greater for L.chinensis and A.michnoi than for C.squarrosa and S.grandis,suggesting higher water use efficiency for the latter two species.(iii)Grazing significantly decreased the drought resistance of three species,but not of S.grandis.(iv)Grazing significantly increased inter-month variation in nutritive value for L.chinensis and A.michnoi but had relatively minor or no effects on that of C.squarrosa and S.grandis.Therefore,grazing effects on species nutritive values showed strong inter-annual and seasonal patterns,and species-specific responses might be related to species traits(i.e.water use efficiency,digestibility).Our results have important implications for ecosystem management of arid and semiarid grasslands under intense grazing and global climatic change. | Haiyan Ren Guodong Han Zhichun Lan Hongwei Wan Philipp Schönbach Martin Gierus Friedhelm Taube | 2016 | Journal of Plant Ecology2016,9,6: | 14 |

| 4 | Inhibition of Mcl-1 enhances cell death induced by the Bcl-2-selective inhibitor ABT-199 in acute myeloid leukemia cells显示文摘Acute myeloid leukemia(AML)is a serious disease.The 5-year survival rates remain frustratingly low(65%for children and 26%for adults).Resistance to frontline chemotherapy(usually cytarabine)often develops;therefore a new treatment modality is needed.Bcl-2 family proteins play an important role in balancing cell survival and apoptosis.The antiapoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins have been found to be dysregulated in AML.ABT-199,a BH3 mimetic,was developed to target antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2.Although ABT-199 has demonstrated promising results,resistance occurs.Previous studies in AML show that ABT-199 alone decreases the association of proapoptotic protein Bim with Bcl-2,but this is compensated by increased association of Bim with prosurvival protein Mcl-1,stabilizing Mcl-1,resulting in resistance to ABT-199.In this study,we investigated the antileukemic activity of the Mcl-1-selective inhibitor A-1210477 in combination with ABT-199 in AML cells.We found that A-1210477 synergistically induced apoptosis with ABT-199 in AML cell lines and primary patient samples.The synergistic induction of apoptosis was decreased upon Bak,Bax and Bim knockdown.While A-1210477 treatment alone also increased Mcl-1 protein levels,combination with ABT-199 reduced binding of Bim to Mcl-1.Our results demonstrate that sequestration of Bim by Mcl-1,a mechanism of ABT-199 resistance,can be abrogated by combined treatment with the Mcl-1 inhibitor A-1201477. | Daniel A Luedtke Xiaojia Niu Yihang Pan Jianyun Zhao Shuang Liu Holly Edwards Kang Chen Hai Lin Jeffrey W Taub Yubin Ge | 2017 | Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2017,2,1: | 11 |

| 9 | Risk factors and outcomes of delayed graft function in renal transplant recipients receiving a steroid sparing immunosuppression protocol显示文摘AIM To analyse the risk factors and outcomes of delayed graft function(DGF) in patients receiving a steroid sparing protocol. METHODS Four hundred and twenty-seven recipients of deceased donor kidney transplants were studied of which 135(31.6%) experienced DGF. All patients received monoclonal antibody induction with a tacrolimus based, steroid sparing immunosuppression protocol.RESULTS Five year patient survival was 87.2% and 94.9% in the DGF and primary graft function(PGF) group respectively, P = 0.047. Allograft survival was 77.9% and 90.2% in the DGF and PGF group respectively, P < 0.001. Overall rejection free survival was no different between the DGF and PGF groups with a 1 and 5 year rejection free survival in the DGF group of 77.7% and 67.8% compared with 81.3% and 75.3% in the PGF group, P = 0.19. Patients with DGF who received IL2 receptor antibody induction were at significantly higher risk of rejection in the early post-transplant period than the group with DGF who received alemtuzumab induction. On multivariate analysis, risk factors for DGF were male recipients, recipients of black ethnicity, circulatory death donation, preformed DSA, increasing cold ischaemic time, older donor age and dialysis vintage.CONCLUSION Alemtuzumab induction may be of benefit in preventing early rejection episodes associated with DGF. | 11 | Heterogeneous integration of contact-printed semiconductor nanowires for high-performance devices on large areas显示文摘In this work,we have developed a contact-printing system to efficiently transfer the bottom-up and top-down semiconductor nanowires(NWs),preserving their as-grown features with a good control over their electronic properties.In the close-loop configuration,the printing system is controlled with parameters such as contact pressure and sliding speed/stroke.Combined with the dry pre-treatment of the receiver substrate,the system prints electronic layers with high NW density(7 NWs/μm for bottom-up ZnO and 3 NWs/μm for top-down Si NWs),NW transfer yield and reproducibility.We observed compactly packed(~115 nm average diameters of NWs,with NW-to-NW spacing~165 nm)and well-aligned NWs(90%with respect to the printing direction).We have theoretically and experimentally analysed the role of contact force on NW print dynamics to investigate the heterogeneous integration of ZnO and Si NWs over pre-selected areas.Moreover,the contact-printing system was used to fabricate ZnO and Si NW-based ultraviolet(UV)photodetectors(PDs)with Wheatstone bridge(WB)configuration on rigid and flexible substrates.The UV PDs based on the printed ensemble of NWs demonstrate high efficiency,a high photocurrent to dark current ratio(>10^(4))and reduced thermal variations as a result of inherent self-compensation of WB arrangement.Due to statistically lesser dimensional variations in the ensemble of NWs,the UV PDs made from them have exhibited uniform response. | Carlos García Núñez Fengyuan Liu William Taube Navaraj Adamos Christou Dhayalan Shakthivel Ravinder Dahiya | 2018 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2018,4,1: | 3 |

Diagno-stic evaluation should focus on differentiating prosthetic valve thrombosis(PVT) from pannus formation,as their treatment options differ. History of sub-optimal anti-coagulation and post-op time course to development of PVO are useful clinical characteristics in differentiating thrombus from pannus formation. Treatment of PVT is influenced by the patient's symptoms,valve location,degree of obstruction and thrombus size and may include thrombolysis or surgical intervention. Alternatively,pannus formation requires surgical intervention.
