| 1 | Protective effect of hydrogen sulfide on oxidative stress-induced neurodegenerative diseases显示文摘Hydrogen sulfide is an antioxidant molecule that has a wide range of biological effects against oxidative stress. Balanced oxidative stress is also vital for maintaining cellular function in biological system, where reactive oxygen species are the main source of oxidative stress. When the normal redox balance is disturbed, deoxyribonucleic acid, lipid, and protein molecules are oxidized under pathological conditions, like diabetes mellitus that leads to diabetic peripheral neuropathy. In diabetes mellitus-induced diabetic peripheral neuropathy, due to hyperglycemia, pancreatic beta cell(β cell) shows resistance to insulin secretion. As a consequence, glucose metabolism is disturbed in neuronal cells which are distracted from providing proper cell signaling pathway. Not only diabetic peripheral neuropathy but also other central damages occur in brain neuropathy. Neurological studies regarding type 1 diabetes mellitus patients with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis have shown changes in the central nervous system because high blood glucose levels(HbA1 c) appeared with poor cognitive function. Oxidative stress plays a role in inhibiting insulin signaling that is necessary for brain function. Hydrogen sulfide exhibits antioxidant effects against oxidative stress, where cystathionine β synthase, cystathionine γ lyase, and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase are the endogenous sources of hydrogen sulfide. | 2 | An advanced anaerobic biofilter with effluent recirculation for phenol removal and methane production in treatment of coal gasification wastewater显示文摘An advanced anaerobic biofilter(AF) was introduced for the treatment of coal gasification wastewater(CGW),and effluent recirculation was adopted to enhance phenol removal and methane production.The results indicated that AF was reliable in treating diluted CGW,while its efficiency and stability were seriously reduced when directly treating raw CGW.However,its performance could be greatly enhanced by effluent recirculation.Under optimal effluent recirculation of 0.5 to the influent,concentrations of chemical oxygen demand(COD) and total phenol in the effluent could reach as low as 234.0 and 14.2 mg/L,respectively.Also,the rate of methane production reached 169.0 m L CH_4/L/day.Though CGW seemed to restrain the growth of anaerobic microorganisms,especially methanogens,the inhibition was temporary and reversible,and anaerobic bacteria presented strong tolerance.The activities of methanogens cultivated in CGW could quickly recover on feeding with glucose wastewater(GW).However,the adaptability of anaerobic bacteria to the CGW was very poor and the activity of methanogens could not be improved by long-term domestication.By analysis using the Haldane model,it was further confirmed that high effluent recirculation could result in high activity for hydrolytic bacteria and substrate affinity for toxic matters,but only suitable effluent recirculation could result in high methanogenic activity. | Yajie Li Salma Tabassum Zhenjia Zhang | 2016 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2016,28,9: | 7 |
| 3 | Inhibitory effect of high phenol concentration in treating coal gasification wastewater in anaerobic biofilter显示文摘In this paper, the inhibition of methanogens by phenol in coal gasification wastewater(CGW)was investigated by both anaerobic toxicity tests and a lab-scale anaerobic biofilter reactor(AF). The anaerobic toxicity tests indicated that keeping the phenol concentration in the influent under 280 mg/L could maintain the methanogenic activity. In the AF treating CGW,the result showed that adding glucose solution as co-substrate could be beneficial for the quick start-up of the reactor. The effluent chemical oxygen demand(COD) and total phenol reached1200 and 100 mg/L, respectively, and the methane production rate was 175 m L CH4/g COD/day.However, if the concentration of phenol was increased, the inhibition of anaerobic micro-organisms was irreversible. The threshold of total phenol for AF operation was 200–250 mg/L. The extracellular polymeric substances(EPS) and particle size distribution of anaerobic granular sludge in the different stages were also examined, and the results indicated that the influence of toxicity in the system was more serious than its effect on flocculation of EPS. Moreover, the proportion of small size anaerobic granular sludge gradually increased from10.2% to 34.6%. | 4 | 磺化水热碳催化乙酰丙酸酯化生成戊酮酸乙酯(英文)显示文摘The synthesis of carbon-based, heterogeneous sulphonic catalysts for the production of levulinate esters. Hydrothermal treatment at moderated temperatures was employed to generate highly functional carbonaceous materials, referred to as hydrothermal carbons (HTCs), from both glucose, cellulose and rye straw. The products were sulfonated to generate solid acid-catalysts. Characterisation of the as-synthesised materials as well as catalyst activity tests were performed. SEM images indicate the micrometre-sized particles present in both HTCs were largely unaffected by sulfonation, although cellulose-derived HTC displayed signs of inadequate hydrolysis. FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis confirmed successful incorporation of sulphonic groups. 13C solid state NMR, in addition to TGA, elucidated the carbons’ structural composition and supported the common-ly-proposed hydrothermal carbonisation mechanism. | 5 | Therapeutic importance of hydrogen sulfide in age-associated neurodegenerative diseases显示文摘Hydrogen sulfide(H2S)is a gasotransmitter that acts as an antioxidant and exhibits a wide variety of cytoprotective and physiological functions in age-associated diseases.One of the major causes of age-related diseases is oxidative stress.In recent years,the importance of H2S has become clear,although its antioxidant function has not yet been fully explored.The enzymes cystathionineβ-synthase,cystathionineγ-lya-se,and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase are involved in the enzymatic production of H2S.Previously,H2S was considered a neuromodulator,given its role in long-term hippocampal potentiation,but it is now also recognized as an antioxidant in age-related neurodegeneration.Due to aerobic metabolism,the central nervous system is vulnerable to oxidative stress in brain aging,resulting in age-associated degenerative diseases.H2S exerts its antioxidant effect by limiting free radical reactions through the activation of antioxidant enzymes,including superoxide dismutase,catalase,and glutathione peroxidase,which protect against the effects of aging by regulating apoptosis-related genes,including p53,Bax,and Bcl-2.This review explores the implications and mechanisms of H2S as an antioxidant in age-associated neurodegenerative diseases,including Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,Huntington’s disease,and Down syndrome. | Rubaiya Tabassum Na Young Jeong Junyang Jung | 2020 | Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,4: | 3 |
