1Insight into the temperature sensitivity of forest litter decomposition and soil enzymes in subtropical forest in China显示文摘Aims With the continuing increase in the impact of human activities on ecosystems, ecologists are increasingly interested in understanding the effects of high temperature on litter decomposition since litter decomposition and the accompanying release of nutrients and carbon dioxide are key processes in ecosystem nutrient cycling and carbon flux. This study was conducted to evaluate the temperature sensitivity of forest litter decomposition and soil enzymes during litter decomposition in subtropical forest in China. Methods Two dominant litter types were chosen from Zijin Mountain in China:Quercus acutissima leaves from a broadleaf forest(BF)and Pinus massoniana needles from a coniferous forest(CF).The litter samples were incubated in soil microcosms at ambient control temperature(20C)and 10C warmer.During a 5-month incubation, chemical composition of litter samples, litter mass losses, and related soil enzyme activities were determined.Important Findings Three main results were found:(i)high temperature accelerated decomposition rates of both litter types, and the temperature sensitivities of litter decomposition for BF leaves and that for CF needles are equivalent basically,(ii)high temperature enhanced soil enzyme activities in the two forest types, and the temperature sensitivities of polyphenol oxidase were significantly higher than those of the other soil enzymes and(iii)the temperature sensitivities of nitrate reductase were significantly higher in the CF soil than in the BF soil, while there was no significant difference in the temperature sensitivities of the other soil enzymes between BF and CF.As a long-term consequence, the high-temperature-induced acceleration of litter decomposition rates in these subtropical forests may cause carbon stored belowground to be transferred in the atmosphere, which may alter the balance between carbon uptake and release, and then alter the global carbon cycle in the coming decades.Congyan Wang Guomin Han Yong Jia Xiaoguang Feng Xingjun Tian 2012Journal of Plant Ecology2012,5,3:8
2Insights into seasonal variation of litter decomposition and related soil degradative enzyme activities in subtropical forest in China显示文摘We used a litterbag method to investigate litter decomposition and related soil degradative enzyme activities across four seasons in a broad-leaved forest and a coniferous forest on Zijin Mountain in sub-tropical China.Across four seasons, we quantified litter mass losses, soil pH values, and related soil degradative enzyme activities.Litter decomposition rates differed significantly by season.Litter decomposition rates of broadleaf forest leaves were higher than for coniferous forests needles across four seasons, and maximal differences in litter decomposition rates between the two litter types were found in spring.Obvious differences in litter decomposition rates of the two litter types were found in winter, which were similar to rates in spring.Litter decomposition rates of the two litter types in autumn were significantly higher than in spring.Soil degradative enzyme activities were lowest in winter and highest in summer in most cases across four seasons.WANG Cong-yan Lü Yan-na WANG Lei LIU Xue-yan TIAN Xingjun 2013Journal of Forestry Research2013,24,4:6

7Adaptation of microbial communities to multiple stressors associated with litter decomposition of Pterocarya stenoptera显示文摘To understand the further impacts of multiple stressors in freshwater, we investigated the effects of heavy metal(HM, Cu and Zn) and nutrient enrichments(nitrogen and phosphorus, NP) on microbial decomposition of Pterocarya stenoptera litter and the associated extracellular enzyme activities and microbial biomass with microcosms. Results showed that the decomposition rates were slower in the polluted stream waters than those in the unpolluted ones, which corresponded to lower microbial biomass and integrated enzyme activities of cellulose and β-glucosidase. The decomposition rates were accelerated at low HM level, which was associated with the stimulated enzyme activities of hydrolytic enzymes or was stimulated by both NP levels in polluted stream waters. In particular, the hydrolase enzyme activities of microbial communities in polluted stream waters were stimulated by low HM level, suggesting that low HM level-stimulated litter decomposition may be due to the increased enzymatic activities. When microbial communities were exposed to HM and NP simultaneously, the inhibitory effect(in unpolluted stream waters) or the stimulated effect(in polluted stream waters) of low HM concentration was enhanced and attenuated, respectively, which suggests that the NP antagonistic effect against HM toxicity on litter decomposition may contribute to the litterassociated extracellular enzyme activities. These results suggest that the co-occurrence of HM and NP may have antagonistic effects on stream ecosystem functioning.Gaozhong Pu Jingjing Tong Aimeng Su Xu Ma Jingjing Du Yanna Lv Xingjun Tian 2014Journal of Environmental Sciences2014,26,5:1
8Using a behavior random permutation model to identify displacement grooming in ungulates显示文摘Behavior affects an individual's life in all aspects,e.g.,enhancing fitness, leveraging predation risk, and reducing competition with conspecifics. However, the sequential distribution of behaviors received less attention and is unclear what the function of displacement behavior is.Displacement activities can be found in vertebrate species but there is no formal method to determine whether a behavior is expressed as a displaced or normal activity.Analyzing the sequential distributions of behaviors in a natural setting may allow researchers to identify unexpected distributions as a possible signature of displacement activities. In this study,we used a behavior random permutation model to detect the presence of a displacement activity in the Tibetan antelope Pantholops hodgsonii and the Tibetan gazelle Procapra picticaudata. The results showed that grooming in both ungulates tended to be accompanied with vigilance, and the frequency of grooming after vigilance was significantly higher than before vigilance.A significant positive correlation between the scan rate and grooming rate in the 2 ungulates was obtained. We suggest that grooming could sometimes be expressed as a displacement activity in ungulates. In addition to providing a general method for further research on displacement activities in a variety of animal species, this study sheds light on the importance of a spectral analysis of sequential distribution of animal behaviors.Behavior random permutation models can be used to explore the relevance between any 2 behaviors in a specific sequence, especially to identify a myriad of unexpected behaviors relative to their normal context of occurrence.Yunchao Luo Lin Wang Le Yang Xiao-Fen Li Patrick Anselme Xinxin Wang Xingjun Tian Zhongqiu Li 2023Current Zoology2023,69,2:0
