| 2 | Is nasopharyngeal cancer really a “Cantonese cancer”?显示文摘Nasopharyngeal cancer(NPC) is endemic in Southern China,with Guandong province and Hong Kong reporting some of the highest incidences in the world.The journal Science has called it a 'Cantonese cancer'.We propose that in fact NPC is a cancer that originated in the Bai-Yue('proto-Tai-Kadai' or 'proto-Austronesian' or 'proto-Zhuang') peoples and was transmitted to the Han Chinese in southern China through intermarriage.However,the work by John Ho raised the profile of NPC,and because of the high incidence of NPC in Hong Kong and Guangzhou,NPC became known as a Cantonese cancer.We searched historical articles,articles cited in PubMed,Google,monographs,books and Internet articles relating to genetics of the peoples with high populations of NPC.The migration history of these various peoples was extensively researched,and where possible,their genetic fingerprint identified to corroborate with historical accounts.Genetic and anthropological evidence suggest there are a lot of similarities between the Bai-Yue and the aboriginal peoples of Borneo and Northeast India;between Inuit of Greenland,Austronesian Mayalo-Polynesians of Southeast Asia and Polynesians of Oceania,suggesting some common ancestry.Genetic studies also suggest the present Cantonese,Minnans and Hakkas are probably an admixture of northern Han and southern Bai-Yue.All these populations have a high incidence of NPC.Very early contact between southern Chinese and peoples of East Africa and Arabia can also account for the intermediate incidence of NPC in these regions. | Joseph Tien Seng Wee Tam Cam Ha Susan Li Er Loong Chao-Nan Qian | 2010 | Chinese Journal of Cancer2010，29，5： | 37 |
| 3 | Tooth regeneration: a revolution in stomatology and evolution in regenerative medicine显示文摘A tooth is a complex biological organ and consists of multiple tissues including the enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp. Tooth loss is the most common organ failure. Can a tooth be regenerated? Can adult stem cells be orchestrated to regenerate tooth structures such as the enamel, dentin, cementum and dental pulp, or even an entire tooth? If not, what are the therapeutically viable sources of stem cells for tooth regeneration? Do stem cells necessarily need to be taken out of the body, and manipulated ex vivo before they are transplanted for tooth regeneration? How can regenerated teeth be economically competitive with dental implants? Would it be possible to make regenerated teeth affordable by a large segment of the population worldwide? This review article explores existing and visionary approaches that address some of the above-mentioned questions. Tooth regeneration represents a revolution in stomatology as a shift in the paradigm from repair to regeneration: repair is by metal or artificial materials whereas regeneration is by biological restoration. | 6 | Increase of beta-amyloid and C-reactive protein in liver transplant recipients with postoperative cognitive dysfunction显示文摘BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is an adverse condition characterized by declined cognitive functions following surgeries and anesthesia. POCD has been associated with increased hospital stay and mortality. There are histological similarities to Alzheimer's disease. Most early studies were conducted in patients receiving cardiac surgery. Since there is no information about POCD in liver transplant recipients, we measured the incidence of POCD in patients after liver transplantation and examined the correlation between neurological dysfunction and biological markers of dementia- based diseases. METHODS: We studied 25 patients who had a liver transplan- tation between July 2008 and February 2009. Patients with prior encephalopathy or risk factors associated with the development of POCD were excluded from the study. Five validated neuropsychiatric tests were used for diagnosis. The diagnosis was based on one standard deviation decline in two of the five neuropsychiatric tests. The correlation between patient variables and the development of POCD was examined. Serum levels of beta-amyloid and C-reactive protein were measured by standard ELISA and compared between patients with and without POCD. RESULTS: POCD was present in 11 (44%) of the 25 patients. Patients with POCD had significantly higher MELD scores, were more often Child-Pugh class C and received more blood transfusion during surgery. The serum beta-amyloid protein and C-reactive protein concentrations were significantly increased at 24 hours after surgery in the POCD group.CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of POCD in our group of liver transplant patients was greater than that reported in other surgical patients. | 10 | Prevalence of amblyopia among preschool children in central south China显示文摘AIM: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with amblyopia among children aged 30-83 mo in central south of China.METHODS: A population-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in children aged 30-83 mo in Changsha(an urban city) and Zhangjiajie(a rural area) in central south of China. Clinical examinations including ocular alignment, ocular motility, visual acuity(VA), prism cover test, cycloplegic refraction, slit lamp examination and fundus examination were performed by trained study ophthalmologists and optometrists. Unilateral amblyopia was defined as a 2-line difference between eyes with VA<20/32 in the worse eye and with coexisting anisometropia [≥1.00 D spherical eutivalent(SE) for hyperopia, ≥3.00 D SE for myopia, and ≥1.50 D for astigmatism], strabismus, or past or present visual axis obstruction. Bilateral amblyopia was defined as VA in both eyes <20/40(≥ 48-month-old) and <20/50(< 48-month-old), with coexisting hyperopia ≥4.00 D SE, myopia ≤-6.00 D SE, and astigmatism ≥2.50 D, or past or present visual axis obstruction.RESULTS: There were 8042 children enrolled and 7713 children were screened. The amblyopia prevalence in children aged 30-83 mo was 1.09%(95% confidence interval, 0.86%-1.35%) with no age(P=0.81), gender(P=0.46) or area distribution(P=0.93) differences. Of these, 0.68% were unilateral cases and 0.41% were bilateral cases. Underlying causes included anisometropia(40%), binocular refractive error(36%), strabismus(14%) and deprivation(10%). Hyperopia combined with astigmatism was the frequent refractive error for ametropic and anisometropic amblyopia.CONCLUSION: In this rural and urban Chinese population, 1.09% of children with 30-83 mo of age had amblyopia, a prevalence rate similar to that of many other studies.
