| 1 | Developing selective mining capability for longwall shearers using thermal infrared-based seam tracking显示文摘Longwall mining continues to remain the most efficient method for underground coal recovery. A key aspect in achieving safe and productive longwall mining is to ensure that the shearer is always correctly positioned within the coal seam. At present, this machine positioning task is the role of longwall personnel who must simultaneously monitor the longwall coal face and the shearer's cutting drum position to infer the geological trends of the coal seam. This is a labour intensive task which has negative impacts on the consistency and quality of coal production. As a solution to this problem, this paper presents a sensing method to automatically track geological coal seam features on the longwall face, known as marker bands, using thermal infrared imaging. These non-visible marker bands are geological features that link strongly to the horizontal trends present in layered coal seams. Tracking these line-like features allows the generation of a vertical datum that can be used to maintain the shearer in a position for optimal coal extraction. Details on the theory of thermal infrared imaging are given, as well as practical aspects associated with machine-based implementation underground. The feature detection and tracking tasks are given with real measurements to demonstrate the efficacy of the approach. | 3 | Metabolic syndrome:A review of the role of vitamin D in mediating susceptibility and outcome显示文摘Despite the well-recognised role of vitamin D in a wide range of physiological processes,hypovitaminosis is common worldwide(prevalence 30%-50%) presumably arising from inadequate exposure to ultraviolet radiation and insufficient consumption.While generally not at the very low levels associated with rickets,hypovitaminosis D has been implicated in various very different,pathophysiological processes.These include putative effects on the pathogenesis of neoplastic change,inflammatory and demyelinating conditions,cardiovascular disease(CVD) and diabetes.This review focuses on the association between hypovitaminosis D and the metabolic syndrome as well as its component characteristics which are central obesity,glucose homeostasis,insulin resistance,hypertension and atherogenic dyslipidaemia.We also consider the effects of hypovitaminosis D on outcomes associated with the metabolic syndrome such as CVD,diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.We structure this review into 3 distinct sections; the metabolic syndrome,vitamin D biochemistry and the putative association between hypovitaminosis D,the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk. | Richard C Strange Kate E Shipman Sudarshan Ramachandran | 2015 | World Journal of Diabetes2015,6,7: | 5 |
| 4 | Postoperative deep shoulder infections following rotator cuff repair显示文摘Rotator cuff repair(RCR) is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in orthopaedic surgery. The reported incidence of deep soft-tissue infections after RCR ranges between 0.3% and 1.9%. Deep shoulder infection after RCR appears uncommon, but the actual incidence may be higher as many cases may go unreported. Clinical presentation may include increasing shoulder pain and stiffness, high temperature, local erythema, swelling, warmth, and fibrinous exudate. Generalized fatigue and signs of sepsis may be present in severe cases. Varying clinical presentation coupled with a low index of suspicion may result in delayed diagnosis. Laboratory findings include high erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein level, and, rarely, abnormal peripheral blood leucocyte count. Aspiration of glenohumeral joint synovial fluid with analysis of cell count, gram staining and culture should be performed in all patients suspected with deep shoulder infection after RCR. The most commonly isolated pathogens are Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Management of a deep soft-tissue infection of the shoulder after RCR involves surgical debridement with lavage and long-term intravenous antibiotic treatment based on the pathogen identified. Although deep shoulder infection after RCR is usually successfully treated, complications of this condition can be devastating.
