Molecular hydrogen:current knowledge on mechanism in alleviating free radical damage and diseases显示文摘Ever since molecular hydrogen was first reported as a hydroxyl radical scavenger in 200Z the beneficial effect of hydrogen was documented in more than 170 disease models and human diseases including ischemia/reperfusion injury, metabolic syndrome, inflammation, and cancer. All these pathological damages are concomitant with overproduction of reactive oxygen species(ROS)where molecular hydrogen has been widely demonstrated as a selective antioxidant.Although it is difficult to construe the molecular mechanism of hydrogen's biomedical effect,an increasing number of studies have been helping us draw the picture clearer with days passing by.In this review,we summarized the current knowledge on systemic and cellular modulation by hydrogen treatment. We discussed the antioxidative,anti-inflammatory,and anti-apoptosis effects of hydrogen,as well as its protection on mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum, regulation of intracellular signaling pathways, and balancing of the immune cell subtypes. We hope that this review will provide organized information that prompts further investigation for in?depth studies of hydrogen effect.Geru Tao Guohua Song Shucun Qin 2019Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica2019,51,12:18
The relationship between relative growth rate and whole-plant C:N:P stoichiometry in plant seedlings grown under nutrient-enriched conditions显示文摘Aims Recent theories indicate that N is more in demand for plant growth than P;therefore,N concentration and N:C and N:P ratios are predicted to be positively correlated with relative growth rate(RGR)in plants under nutrient-enriched conditions. This prediction was tested in this study. Methods We examined the whole-plant concentrations of C,N and P and RGR,as well as the relationship between RGR and the concentrations and the ratios of N:C,P:C and N:P,for different harvest stages(the days after seed germination)of the seedlings of seven shrub species and four herbaceous species grown in N and P non-limiting conditions. The relationships among plant size, nutrient concentrations and ratios were subsequently determined.Important Findings RGR was positively correlated with N concentration and the ratios of N:PandN:C when the data were pooled for all species and for each shrub species, but not for individual herbaceous species. However, the relationship between RGR and P concentration and P:C was not significantly correlated for either shrubs or herbs. The variation of N among harvest stages and species was much greater than that of P,and the variation in N:P ratio was determined primarily by changes in N concentration. The shrub species differed from the herbaceous species in their N and P concentrations, nutrient ratios and in intraspecific relationships between RGR and nutrient ratios. These differences possibly reflect differences in the capacity for P storage and biomass allocation patterns. In general, our data support recent theoretical predictions regarding the relationship between RGR and C:N:P stoichiometry, but they also show that species with different life forms differ in the relationships among RGR and C:N:P stoichimetries.Youhong Peng Karl J.Niklas Shucun Sun 2011Journal of Plant Ecology2011,4,3:5
Research on critical technology of micro/nano bioparticles manipulation platform based on light-induced dielectrophoresis显示文摘On the basis of the research on the status and problems of micro/nano bio-particles manipulation using dielectrophoresis, the theoretical basis and the model simulation of micro/nano bio-particles manipu-lation using light-induced dielectrophoresis were discussed. The space distribution of electric field and dielectrophoresis forces in different heights were also obtained. On this basis, the core component of the micro manipulation system, that is, photoconductive layer of the chip, was completed in the mate-rial selection, fabricating process and performance analysis testing. Then the voltage drop of the sus-pension and the effective voltage frequency spectrum were obtained. Finally, by combining the machine vision detection with real-time tracking system, the micro/nano bio-particles manipulation platform based on the light-induced dielectrophoreisis was established, and then the manipulations for micro/nano bio-particles, such as quick collection, transport, separation, were implemented. This provided a basis for rapid, accurate, and low-cost detection of serious diseases based on the micro-fluidic biochip and early diagnosis.NI ZhongHua YI Hong ZHU ShuCun SONG ChunFeng 2009Science China(Technological Sciences)2009,52,10:3

Sonocatalytic hydrogen/hole-combined therapy for anti-biofilm and infected diabetic wound healing显示文摘It is a great challenge to effectively eradicate biofilm and cure biofilm-infected diseases because dense extracellular polymeric substance matrix prevents routine antibacterial agents from penetrating into biofilm.H_(2)is an emerging energy-regulating molecule possessing both high biosafety and high tissue permeability. In this work,we propose a concept of sonocatalytic hydrogen/hole-combined’inside/outside-cooperation’anti-biofilm for promoting bacteria-infected diabetic wound healing based on two-dimensional piezoelectric nanomaterials.Proof-of-concept experiments using C_(3)N_(4)nanosheets as a representative piezoelectric catalyst with wide band gap and high biosafety have verified that sonocatalytically generated H_(2)and holes rapidly penetrate into biofilm to inhibit bacterial energy metabolism and oxidatively deprive polysaccharides/NADH in biofilm to destroy the bacterial membrane/electron transport chain,respectively,inside/outside-cooperatively eradicating biofilm.A bacteria-infected diabetic wound model is used to confirm the excellent in vivo antibacterial performance of sonocatalytic hydrogen/hole-combined therapy, remarkably improving bacteria-infe cted diabetic wound healing. The proposed strategy of sonocatalytic hole/hydrogen-combined’inside/outside-cooperation’will make a highway for treatment of deep-seated biofilm infection.Qingqing Xu Shengqiang Chen Lingdong Jiang Chao Xia Lingting Zeng Xiaoqing Cai Zhaokui Jin Shucun Qin Wenjiang Ding Qianjun He 2023National Science Review2023,10,5:2

Light-induced electro-rotation:Microspheres spin in micro-manipulation using light-induced dielectrophoresis显示文摘According to the equivalent circuit model(ECM),finite element model(FEM) and physical experiment, the LIDEP force induced by the spatial variations of the phase of AC electric fields produced by the bright and dark regions on the photoconductive layer was demonstrated.Besides, the phenomenon of the light-induced electro-rotation(LIER) caused by the light-induced rotating electric field was confirmed numerically and experimentally for the first time.It may be helpful to go out of the dilemma that only the dipole moment model, based on the effect of light-induced partial potentials, can be used for LIDEP theoretical calculation currently.Through the FEM simulation and the electro-rotating experiment of yeast cells,it was found that the direction of yeast's LIER is relevant to the distance between its location and the edge of optical electrode, and the spin velocity of LIER is inversely proportional to that distance.Nevertheless, the LIER torques in the three-electrode mode show a non-uniform distribution where the LIDEP forces are harmful for a particle spinning stably around a fixed axis. Moreover,a four-electrode double-layer mode was proposed for the first time and the finite element simulation results agreed with the expected design, suggesting a new way for the dielectric spectrum measurement based on LIER.NI ZhongHua ZU ShuCun CHEN Ke 2011Science China(Technological Sciences)2011,54,11:1

Is Mass-based Metabolism Rate Proportional to Surface Area in Plant Leaves? A Data Re-analysis显示文摘We re-analyzed two large published databases on leaf traits of plant species from seven different biomes, and determined the scaling relationship between leaf metabolism rate (mass-based photosynthesis capacity, Amass, and mass-based dark respiration, Rdmass) and specific leaf area (SLA) across biomes, using a standardized major axis (SMA) method. Overall pooled data produced a scaling exponent of 1.33 for the relationship between Amass and SLA, significantly larger than 1.0; and 1.04 between Rdmass and SLA. The scaling exponent of the relationship between Amass and SLA ranged between 1.23 (in tropical forest) and 1.66 (in alpine biome), and it was significantly larger in alpine (1.66) and grass/meadow (1.52) biomes than in tropical forest (1.23) and wetland (1.27). The exponent of the relationship between Rdmass and SLA, however, was much smaller in wetland (1.05) than in temperate forest (1.29) and tropical rainforest (1.65). In general, the predicated universal scaling relationship that the mass-based metabolism rate should be proportional to surface area in organisms is not applicable at the leaf-level in plants. Rather, the large slope difference of the relationship between leaf metabolism rate and SLA found among biomes indicates that the strength of the selective forces driving the scaling relationship is different among the biomes. The result basically suggests the importance of increasing SLA to plant carbon gain in stressful environments and to carbon loss in favorable habitats, and therefore has an important implication for survival strategies of plants in different biomes.Dongmei Jin Yiqiang Dai Li Sun Shucun Sun 2008Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2008,50,6:1

Factors shaping life history traits of two proovigenic parasitoids显示文摘What shapes the relative investment in reproduction versus survival of organisms is among the key questions in life history.Proovigenic insects mature all their eggs prior to emergence and are short lived, providing a unique opportunity to quantify their lifetime investments in the different functions. We investigated the initial eggloads and longevity of 2 proovigenic parasitoid wasps:Anagrus erythroneurae and Anagrus daanei,(Hymenoptera:Mymaridae)that develop within leafhopper eggs in both agricultural vineyards and natural riparian habitats in Northern California. We collected Vitis spp.leaves containing developing parasitoids from 3 natural sites(Knight Landing,American River and Putah Creek)and 3 agricultural vineyards(Solano Farm,Davis Campus and Village Homes). We recorded eggloads at parasitoid emergence and female parasitoid longevity with or without honey-feeding.Theory predicts that parasitoids from vineyards(where hosts are abundant)would have higher initial eggloads and lower longevity compared with parasitoids from riparian habitats(where hosts are scarce).Although host density and parasitoid eggloads were, indeed, higher in vineyards than in riparian habitats, parasitoid longevity did not follow the predicted pattern.Longevity without feeding differed among field sites, but it was not affected by habitat type(natural vs agricultural),whereas longevity with feeding was not significantly affected by any of the examined factors. Moreover, longevity was positively, rather than negatively, correlated with eggloads at the individual level, even after correcting for parasitoid body size. The combined results suggest a more complex allocation mechanism than initially predicted, and the possibility of variation in host quality that is independent of size.Michal SEGOLI Shucun SUN Dori ENAVA Jay A.ROSENHEIM 2018Integrative Zoology2018,13,3:0
Do plants explore habitats before exploiting them? An explicit test using two stoloniferous herbs显示文摘We tested whether the processes of exploration and exploitation can be explicitly distinguished as plants grow and develop within a habitat using two stoloniferous clonal herbs,Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides(Umbelliferae) and Potentilla anserina(Rosaceae).Ramets were planted in four circular trays differing in diameter. One replicate from each diameter-group was sampled at intervals corresponding to plant coverage of the trays, and plant biomass allocation to leaves, stolons, and roots and internode length were quantified. For both species,at early sampling times(when the smallest trays were full),total plant biomass and ramet number were larger in the smaller trays than in the larger trays. However, this trend was reversed for plants collected at later times. For H.sibthorpioides, leaf mass ratios(leaf mass to total plant mass) were significantly greater, but stolon mass ratios(stolon mass to total plant mass) were less in the small trays than in the larger ones, particularly during the early stages of the experiment.Similarly, for P.anserina, leaf mass ratios decreased in the smaller trays but increased in the larger ones as the experiment progressed.Root mass ratios showed contrasting pattern to leaf mass ratios for both species;stolon mass ratios were significantly smaller in the smaller trays than in the larger ones, although there were no obvious patterns during the course of the experiment. In addition, for both species, internode length was shorter but the number of ramets was greater in the smaller trays at early sampling times. We conclude that plants invest greater biomass in resource-exploring organs(stolons) than in resource-exploiting organs(leaves or roots) as they initially establish in a habitat. The relatively lower plant productivity in the largest trays at early sampling times presumably reflects the cost of exploration prior to resource exploitation and utilization.PENG YouHong NIKLAS KarlJ SUN ShuCun 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,19:0
Interspecific interactions between burrowing dung beetles and earthworms on yak dung removal and herbage growth in an alpine meadow显示文摘Interspecific interactions between two spatiotemporally co-occurred species sharing a single resource are considered to be either competitive or facilitative. This study examined the possible interspecific interactions between a dung-tunneling beetle species(Onthophagus yubarinus)and an earthworm species(Aporrectodea noctuma),two major detritivores responsible for dung removal in a Tibetan alpine meadow. We conducted a two-way,factorial field experiment using replicated chambers, and measured the performances of beetles and earthworms,as well as yak dung removal, soil properties and aboveground plant biomass over two months.Earthworm presence significantly decreased the body size of beetle larvae and the weight of tunnel dung that beetle larvae live on.In contrast, beetle presence did not affect the performance of earthworms.Beetles, earthworms and their interaction significantly increased dung removal and soil organic carbon concentration at the end of the experiment.Beetles alone significantly increased soil total N and P,soluble N and P concentrations, but earthworms alone had nonsignificant effects on these nutrient variables.Beetles and earthworms additively enhanced soluble N and P concentrations, and aboveground plant biomass at the end of the experiment. These results indicate 1)there was a one-sided negative relationship between dung-tunneling beetles and earthworms, resulting from the consumption of earthworms on food resource of beetle larvae;and 2)the coexistence of beetles and earthworms facilitated dung removal interactively and plant growth additively by increasing nutrient availability.MINGDA XIE XINWEI WU SHUCUN SUN 2021Soil Ecology Letters2021,3,2:0
Surf4,cargo trafficking, lipid metabolism, and therapeutic implications显示文摘Surfeit 4 is a polytopic transmembrane protein that primarily resides in the endoplasmic reticulum(ER)membrane. It is ubiquitously expressed and functions as a cargo receptor, mediating cargo transport from the ER to the Golgi apparatus via the canonical coat protein complex Il(CoPll)-coated vesicles or specific vesicles. It also participates in ER-Golgi protein trafficking through a tubular network.Meanwhile,it facilitates retrograde transportation of cargos from the Golgi apparatus to the ER through Coplcoated vesicles.Surf4 can selectively mediate export of diverse cargos, such as PCSK9 very low-density lipoprotein(VLDL),progranulin,α1-antitrypsin,STING,proinsulin,and erythropoietin. It has been implicated in facilitating VLDL secretion, promoting cell proliferation and migration, and increasing replication of positive-strand RNA viruses.Therefore,Surf4 plays a crucial role in various physiological and pathophysiological processes and emerges as a promising therapeutic target. However, the molecular mechanisms by which Surf4 selectively sorts diverse cargos for ER-Golgi protein trafficking remain elusive. Here,we summarize the most recent advances in Surf4,focusing on its role in lipid metabolism.Yishi Shen Hong-Mei Gu Shucun Qin Da-Wei Zhang 2022Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2022,14,9:0
