| 1 | Antibacterial activities of selected medicinal plants in traditional treatment of human wounds in Ethiopia显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the activity of selected Ethiopian medicinal plants traditionally used for wound treatment against wound-causing bacteria.Methods:Samples of medicinal plants(Achyranthes aspera,Brucea antidysenteriea,Datura stramonium,Croton macrostachyus,Acokanthera xchimperi.,Phytolacca dodecandra,Milhttia ferruginea,and Solanum incanum)were extracted using absolute methanol and water and tested for their antimicrobial activities against clinical isolates and standard strains of wound-causing bacteria using agar well diffusion and micro titer plate methods.Results:Most of the plant extracts had antibacterial activities,among which Acokanthera schimperi and Brucea antidysenteriea inhibited growth of 100%and 35%of the test organisms,respectively.Methanolic extracts had higher activities compared with their corresponding aqueous extracts.The most susceptible organism to the extracts was Streptococcus pyogens while the most resistant were Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris.Conclusions:This finding justifies the use of the plants in wound healing and their potential activity against woundcausing bacteria.Their toxicity level and antimicrobial activity with different extraction solvents should further be studied to use them as sources and templates for the synthesis of drugs to control wound and other disease-causing bacteria. | Biruhalem Taye Mirutse Giday Abebe Animut Jemal Seid | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,5: | 12 |
| 2 | Robotic surgery for rectal cancer: Current immediate clinical and oncological outcomes显示文摘Laparoscopic rectal surgery continues to be a challenging operation associated to a steep learning curve. Robotic surgical systems have dramatically changed minimally invasive surgery. Three-dimensional, magnified and stable view, articulated instruments, and reduction of physiologic tremors leading to superior dexterity and ergonomics. Therefore, robotic platforms could potentially address limitations of laparoscopic rectal surgery. It was aimed at reviewing current literature on short-term clinical and oncological(pathological) outcomes after robotic rectal cancer surgery in comparison with laparoscopic surgery. A systematic review was performed for the period 2002 to 2014. A total of 1776 patients with rectal cancer underwent minimally invasive robotic treatment in 32 studies. After robotic and laparoscopic approach to oncologic rectal surgery, respectively, mean operating time varied from 192-385 min, and from 158-297 min; mean estimated blood loss was between 33 and 283 mL, and between 127 and 300 mL; mean length of stay varied from 4-10 d; and from 6-15 d. Conversion after robotic rectal surgery varied from 0% to 9.4%, and from 0 to 22% after laparoscopy. There was no difference between robotic(0%-41.3%) and laparoscopic(5.5%-29.3%) surgery regarding morbidity and anastomotic complications(respectively, 0%-13.5%, and 0%-11.1%). Regarding immediate oncologic outcomes, respectively among robotic and laparoscopic cases, positive circumferential margins varied from 0% to 7.5%, and from 0% to 8.8%; the mean number of retrieved lymph nodes was between 10 and 20, and between 11 and 21; and the mean distal resection margin was from 0.8 to 4.7 cm, and from 1.9 to 4.5 cm. Robotic rectal cancer surgery is being undertaken by experienced surgeons. However, the quality of the assembled evidence does not support definite conclusions about most studies variables. Robotic rectal cancer surgery is associated to increased costs and operating time. It also seems to be associated to reduced conversion rates. Other short-term outcomes are comparable to conventional laparoscopy techniques, if not better. Ultimately, pathological data evaluation suggests that oncologic safety may be preserved after robotic total mesorectal excision. | 3 | A Review on Surface?Functionalized Cellulosic Nanostructures as Biocompatible Antibacterial Materials显示文摘As the most abundant biopolymer on the earth,cellulose has recently gained significant attention in the development of antibacterial biomaterials.Biodegradability,renewability,strong mechanical properties,tunable aspect ratio,and low density offer tremendous possibilities for the use of cellulose in various fields.Owing to the high number of reactive groups(i.e.,hydroxyl groups)on the cellulose surface,it can be readily functionalized with various functional groups,such as aldehydes,carboxylic acids,and amines,leading to diverse properties.In addition,the ease of surface modification of cellulose expands the range of compounds which can be grafted onto its structure,such as proteins,polymers,metal nanoparticles,and antibiotics.There are many studies in which cellulose nano-/microfibrils and nanocrystals are used as a support for antibacterial agents.However,little is known about the relationship between cellulose chemical surface modification and its antibacterial activity or biocompatibility.In this study,we have summarized various techniques for surface modifications of cellulose nanostructures and its derivatives along with their antibacterial and biocompatibility behavior to develop non-leaching and durable antibacterial materials.Despite the high effectiveness of surface-modified cellulosic antibacterial materials,more studies on their mechanism of action,the relationship between their properties and their effectivity,and more in vivo studies are required. | Mandana Tavakolian Seid Mahdi Jafari Theo GMvan de Ven | 2020 | Nano-Micro Letters2020,12,6: | 7 |
| 4 | Effects of rhubarb(Rheum ribes L.)syrup on dysenteric diarrhea in children:a randomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled trial显示文摘BACKGROUND:Rheum ribes L.is a plant native to China,Iran,Turkey,India,and a few other countries.Antidiarrheal activity is considered to be one of its important properties according to various systems of traditional medicine.An increasing rate of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has led to treatment failure in some cases of shigellosis in children,and underlines a need for safe,efficient and valid options.OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of R.ribes syrup as a complementary medicine for treatment of shigellosis in children.DESIGN,SETTING,PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS:This randomized,doubleblind,placebocontrolled trial started with a group of 150 children aged between 12–72 months with suspected Shigella dysentery.R.ribes syrup or placebo syrup was administered to the intervention and control groups,respectively for 5 days.In addition,the standard antibiotic treatment(ceftriaxone for the first 3 days and cefixime syrup for 2 further days)was administered to both groups.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Body temperature,abdominal pain,need for antipyretics,defecation frequency,stool volume and consistency and microscopic stool examination were recorded as outcome measures.Any observed adverse effects were also recorded.RESULTS:Mean duration of fever and diarrhea in the R.ribes group was significantly lower than that in the placebo group(P=0.016 and 0.001,respectively).In addition,patients in the R.ribes group showed shorter duration of need for antipyretics and shorter duration of abdominal pain(P=0.012 and 0.001,respectively).However,there were no significant differences between the two groups regarding the microscopic stool analyses.Furthermore,no adverse effect was reported.CONCLUSION:R.ribes syrup can be recommended as a complementary treatment for children with Shigella dysentery. | Ali Khiveh Mohammad Hashem Hashempur Mehrdad Shakiba Mohammad Hassan Lotfi Afsaneh Shakeri Seid Kazem Kazemeini Zohre Mousavi Marzie Jabbari Mohammad Kamalinejad Majid Emtiazy | 2017 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2017,15,5: | 3 |

| 7 | The impact of pastoralist mobility on tuberculosis control in Ethiopia:a systematic review and meta-synthesis显示文摘Background:Directly observed treatment,short-course(DOTS)is the current mainstay to control tuberculosis(TB)worldwide.Context-specific adaptations of DOTS have impending implications in the fight against TB.In Ethiopia,there is a national TB control programme with the goal to eliminate TB,but uneven distribution across lifestyle gradients remains a challenge.Notably,the mobile pastoralist communities in the country are disproportionately left uncovered.The aim of this study was to summarize the evidence base from published literature to guide TB control strategy for mobile pastoralist communities in Ethiopia.Main text:We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses(PRISMA)guidelines and systematically reviewed articles in seven electronic databases:Excerptra Medical Database,African Journal Online,PubMed,Google Scholar,Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International Direct,Cochrane Library and Web of Science.The databases were searched from inception to December 31,2018,with no language restriction.We screened 692 items of which 19 met our inclusion criteria.Using a meta-ethnographic method,we identified six themes:(i)pastoralism in Ethiopia;(ii)pastoralists’livelihood profile;(iii)pastoralists’service utilisation;(iv)pastoralists’knowledge and awareness on TB control services;(v)challenges of TB control in pastoral settings;and(vi)equity disparities affecting pastoralists.Our interpretation triangulates the results across all included studies and shows that TB control activities observed in pastoralist regions of Ethiopia are far fewer than elsewhere in the country.Conclusions:This systematic review and meta-synthesis shows that TB control in Ethiopia does not align well with the pastoralist lifestyle.Inaccessibility and lack of acceptability of TB care are the key bottlenecks to pastoralist TB service provision.Targeting these two parameters holds promise to enhance effectiveness of an intervention. | Faisal Nooh Lisa Crump Abdiwahab Hashi Rea Tschopp Esther Schelling Klaus Reither Jan Hattendorf Seid M.Ali Brigit Obrist Jurg Utzinger Jakob Zinsstag | 2019 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2019,8,5: | 2 |

| 10 | Treatment outcomes of visceral leishmaniasis in Ethiopia from 2001 to 2017:a systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Background:Ethiopia has the highest number of visceral leishmaniasis(VL)cases after Sudan in Sub-Saharan Africa.However,there was lack of comprehensive data on VL treatment outcome despite the huge burden of the diseases in the country.Hence,we aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on this topic to obtain stronger evidence on treatment outcomes of VL from the existing literature in Ethiopia.Methods:The Cochrane guidelines to conduct meta-analysis following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis statement was used to conduct a computerized systematic search of the PubMed,Google Scholar,and ScienceDirect databases.Random effects model was used to combine studies showing heterogeneity of Cochrane Q P<0.10 and I2>50.Treatment outcomes were assessed at end of treatment and at 6 months follow-up.Subgroup analyses were performed on treatment outcomes based on the different antileishmanial treatment options and patients’HIV status.Results:Fifteen studies were included in the final analyses.At end of treatment,an overall treatment success rate of 82.6%was noticed.At 6 months follow-up,the overall treatment success rate was 72.2%.For patients treated with sodium stibogluconate(SSG),the treatment success rates at the end of treatment and at six-month follow-up were 81.5%and 80.7%,respectively.Multiple doses of liposomal-amphotericin B(L-AMB)had treatment success rates of 96.7 and 71-100%at the end of treatment and at 6 months follow-up,respectively.The combination of SSG with paromomycin(PM)gave treatment success rates of up to 90.1%at the end of treatment.HIV-infected individuals were found to have a higher mortality(odds ratio=4.77,95%CI:1.30-17.43,P=0.009)rate at 6 months follow-up.Conclusions:SSG alone has shown lower treatment efficacy in the management of VL when compared to combination of SSG with PM and multiple doses of L-AMB.The combination of SSG with PM gave good treatment success rates with shorter duration of treatment.Hence,the combination of SSG with PM should be used preferentially over SSG monotherapy.Multiple doses of L-AMB showed great efficacy especially among patients with complications,severe disease,HIV co-infection,and intolerance to the adverse effects of antimonials.HIVinfected individuals had a worse prognosis than their HIV-negative counterparts. | Eyob Alemayehu Gebreyohannes Akshaya Srikanth Bhagvathula Tadesse Melaku Abegaz Mohammed Assen Seid | 2018 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1: | 1 |
