1Biomass-derived bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reaction: A review显示文摘Oxygen electrode catalysts are important as inter-conversion of O_(2) and H_(2)O is crucial for energy technologies. However, the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction and evolution reactions(ORR and OER)are a hindrance to their scalable production, whereas scarce and costly Pt and Ir/Ru-based catalysts with the highest electrocatalytic activity are commercially unviable.Since good ORR catalysts are not always efficient for OER and vice versa,so bifunctional catalysts on which OER and ORR occurs on the same electrode are very desirable.Alternative catalysts based on heteroatom-doped carbon nanomaterials, though showed good electrocatalytic activity yet their high cost and complex synthesis is not viable for scalable production. To overcome these drawbacks,biomass-derived heteroatom-doped porous carbons have recently emerged as low-cost,earth-abundant,renewable and sustainable environment-friendly materials for bifunctional oxygen catalysts. The tunable morphology, mesoporous structure and high concentration of catalytic active sites of these materials due to heteroatom(N)-doping could further enhance their ORR and OER activity, along with tolerance to methanol crossover and good durability. Thus, biomassderived heteroatom-doped porous carbons with large surface area, rich edge defects, numerous micropores and thin 2 D nanoarchitecture could be suitable as efficient bifunctional oxygen catalysts. In the present article,synthesis,N-doping,ORR/OER mechanism and electrocatalytic performance of biomassderived bifunctional catalysts has been discussed. The selected biomass(chitin, eggs, euonymus japonicas, tobacco, lysine and plant residue)except wood, act as both C and N precursor, resulting in N selfdoping of porous carbons that avoids the use of toxic chemicals, thus making the synthesis a facile and environment-friendly green process. The synthetic strategy could be further optimized to develop future biomass-based N self-doped porous carbons as metal-free high performance bifunctional oxygen catalysts for commercial energy applications.Recent advances and the importance of biomass-based bifunctional oxygen catalysts in metal-air batteries and fuel cells has been highlighted. The material design, perspectives and future directions in this field are also provided.Satpal Singh Sekhon Jaeyoung Lee Jin-Soo Park 2022Journal of Energy Chemistry2022,31,2:3

9An atypical ubiquitin ligase at the heart of neural development and programmed axon degeneration显示文摘The degeneration of nerve fibres following injury was first described by Augustus Waller over 170 years ago.Initially assumed to be a passive process,it is now evident that axons respond to insult via regulated cellular signaling events resulting in their programmed degeneration.Pro-survival and prodegenerative factors have been identified and their regulato ry mechanisms are beginning to emerge. The ubiquitin system has been implicated in the pro-degenerative process and a key component is the ubiquitin E3 ligase MYCBP2(also known as PHR1).Ubiquitin E3 ligases are tasked with the transfer of the small protein modifier ubiquitin to substrates and consist of hundreds of members. They can be classified as single subunit systems or as multi-subunit complexes.Their catalytic domains can also be assigned to three general architectures.Hints that MYCBP2 might not conform to these established formats came to light and it is now clear from biochemical and structural studies that MYCBP2 is indeed an outlier in terms of its modus operandi.Furthermore, the unconventional way in which MYCBP2 transfe rs ubiquitin to substrates has been linked to neurodevelopmental and pro-degenerative function.Herein,we will summarize these research developments relating to the unusual features of MYCBP2 and postulate therapeutic strategies that prevent Walle rian degeneration. These have exciting potential for providing relief from pathological neuropathies and neurodegenerative diseases.Satpal Virdee 2022Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,11:0
10Possible role of sialylation of retinal protein glycans in the regulation of electroretinogram response in mice显示文摘AIM:To evaluate if the nature, degree and extent of Siaα2-3-/Siaα2-6-sialylation of retinal protein glycans plays a possible role in the development and regulation of electroretinogram response(ERG) in mice.METHODS: Proteins extracted, from retinae of postnatal day 2(PN2),PN7,and PN14 wild type(wt) and retinal degeneration 1(rd1) mice were quantified, labeled and used for lectin-microarray profiling with immobilized lectins which recognize a wide range of N-/O-glycans.Net fluorescence intensities of lectin-ligand complexes were measured and images of fluorescent lectin-microarrays were acquired. From the binding curves between each lectin and protein extracts from PN14 wt and PN14 rd1 mice retinae, the protein concentration was selected to determine optimum signal intensity for lectin-ligand binding. Mean±SEM values of proteins and fluorescenceintensities of lectin-ligand-complexes between 45 lectins and 36 protein extracts from wt and rd1 mice retinae were compared for significance of differences.RESULTS: Comparison of the progressive relative changes in the sialylated glycans of retinal proteins from wt and rd1 mice showed that Siaα2-3Galβ1-4Glc NAc-glycans(but not Siaα2-6-glycans) were detectable and quantifiable from the retinal-proteins of PN7 and PN14 wt and rd1 mice. Siaα2-3-sialylation of retinal-protein Gal/α-linked-Gal-glycans was significantly increased with age in PN7 and PN14 wt and less so in PN14 rd1 mice. Siaα2-3-/Siaα2-6-sialylation of retinal-protein Gal/α-linked-Gal-glycans was absent in PN2 wt and rd1 mice. Comparison of published ERG responses of wt and rd1 mice retinae with degree of Siaα2-3-sialylation of retinal-protein-glycans showed that PN2 wt and rd1 mice lack both the ERG response and Siaα2-3-/Siaα2-6-sialylation of retinal-protein Gal/α-linked-Galglycans; rd1 mice with relatively lower Siaα2-3-sialylation of retinal-protein Gal/α-linked-Gal-glycans showed aberrant ERG response; and wt mice with significantly higher Siaα2-3-sialylation of retinal-protein Gal/α-linkedGal-glycans showed normal ERG response.CONCLUSION: Degree of Siaα2-3-sialylation of glycans possibly regulates ERG function in mice.Satpal Ahuja 2017International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017,10,8:0

12Effects of roller burnishing process parameters on surface roughness of A356/5%SiC composite using response surface methodology显示文摘In this study,a simple roller burnishing tool was made to operate burnishing processes on A356/5%SiC metal matrix composite fabricated by electromagnetic stir casting under different parameters. The effects of burnishing speed, burnishing force and number of burnishing passes on the surface roughness and tribological properties were measured.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) graphs of the machined surface with PCD(insert-10) tool and roller burnished surface with tungsten carbide(WC) roller were taken into consideration to observe the surface finish of metal matrix composites. The mechanical properties(tensile strength, hardness, ductility) of A356/5%SiC metal matrix composites were studied for both unburnished samples and burnished samples. The results revealed that the roller burnished samples of A356/5%SiC led to the improvement in tensile strength, hardness and ductility. In order to find out the effects of roller burnishing process parameters on the surface roughness of A35675%SiC metal matrix composite, response surface methodology(RSM)(Box-Behnken design) was used and a prediction model was developed relevant to average surface roughness using experimental data.In the range of process parameters, the result shows that roller burnishing speed increases, and surface roughness decreases, but on the other hand roller burnishing force and number of passes increase, and surface roughness increases.Optimum values of burnishing speed(1.5 m/s),burnishing force(50 N) and number of passes(2)during roller burnishing of A356/5%SiC metal matrix composite to minimize the surface roughness(predicted1.232 urn) have been found out. There was only 5.03%error in the experimental and modeled results of surface roughness.Shashi Prakash Dwivedi Satpal Sharma Raghvendra Kumar Mishra 2014Advances in Manufacturing2014,2,4:0
