1Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy:Indications,technique,complications and management显示文摘Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy(PEG)is the preferred route of feeding and nutritional support in patients with a functional gastrointestinal system who require long-term enteral nutrition.Besides its wellknown advantages over parenteral nutrition,PEG offers superior access to the gastrointestinal system over surgical methods.Considering that nowadays PEG tube placement is one of the most common endoscopic procedures performed worldwide,knowing its indications and contraindications is of paramount importance in current medicine.PEG tubes are sometimes placed inappropriately in patients unable to tolerate adequate oral intake because of incorrect and unrealistic understanding of their indications and what they can accomplish.Broadly,the two main indications of PEG tube placement are enteral feeding and stomach decompression.On the other hand,distal enteral obstruction,severe uncorrectable coagulopathy and hemodynamic instability constitute the main absolute contraindications for PEG tube placement in hospitalized patients.Although generally considered to be a safe procedure,there is the potential for both minor and major complications.Awareness of these potential complications,as well as understanding routine aftercare of the catheter,can improve the quality of care for patients with a PEG tube.These complications can generally be classified into three major categories:endoscopic technical difficulties,PEG procedure-related complications and late complications associated with PEG tube use and wound care.In this review we describe a variety of minor and major tube-related complications as well as strategies for their management and avoidance.Different methods of percutaneous PEG tube placement into the stomach have been described in the literature with the'pull'technique being the most common method.In the last section of this review,the reader is presented with a brief discussion of these procedures,techniques and related issues.Despite the mentioned PEG tube placement complications,this procedure has gained worldwide popularity as a safe enteral access for nutrition in patients with a functional gastrointestinal system.Ata A Rahnemai-Azar Amir A Rahnemaiazar Rozhin Naghshizadian Amparo Kurtz Daniel T Farkas 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,24:38
2Photonic gas sensors exploiting directly the optical properties of hybrid carbon nanotube localized surface plasmon structures显示文摘Weinvestigate the modification of the optical properties of carbon nanotubes(CNTs)resulting from a chemical reaction triggered by the presence of a specific compound(gaseous carbon dioxide(CO_(2)))and show this mechanism has important consequences for chemical sensing.CNTs have attracted significant research interest because they can be functionalized for a particular chemical,yielding a specific physical response which suggests many potential applications in the fields of nanotechnology and sensing.So far,however,utilizing their optical properties for this purpose has proven to be challenging.We demonstrate the use of localized surface plasmons generated on a nanostructured thin film,resembling a large array of nano-wires,to detect changes in the optical properties of the CNTs.Chemical selectivity is demonstrated using CO_(2) in gaseous form at room temperature.The demonstrated methodology results additionally in a new,electrically passive,optical sensing configuration that opens up the possibilities of using CNTs as sensors in hazardous/explosive environments.Thomas Allsop Raz Arif Ron Neal Kyriacos Kalli Vojtěch Kundrát Aleksey Rozhin Phil Culverhouse David J Webb 2016Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1:3
3Observation of chaotic polarization attractors from a graphene mode locked soliton fiber laser显示文摘We have demonstrated an all-fiber passively mode locked erbium-doped fiber laser(EDFL) based on graphene–polyvinyl-alcohol film. By watchfully adjusting the polarization controller, two different polarization attractors, including polarization locked vector solitons and a circular attractor, can be observed. 4A sensing mechanism for the detection of carbon nanotubes using selective photoluminescent probes based on ionic complexes with organic dyes显示文摘The multifunctional properties of carbon nanotubes(CNTs)make them a powerful platform for unprecedented innovations in a variety of practical applications.As a result of the surging growth of nanotechnology,nanotubes present a potential problem as an environmental pollutant,and as such,an efficient method for their rapid detection must be established.Here,we propose a novel type of ionic sensor complex for detecting CNTs–an organic dye that responds sensitively and selectively to CNTs with a photoluminescent signal.The complexes are formed through Coulomb attractions between dye molecules with uncompensated charges and CNTs covered with an ionic surfactant in water.We demonstrate that the photoluminescent excitation of the dye can be transferred to the nanotubes,resulting in selective and strong amplification(up to a factor of 6)of the light emission from the excitonic levels of CNTs in the near-infrared spectral range,as experimentally observed via excitation-emission photoluminescence(PL)mapping.The chirality of the nanotubes and the type of ionic surfactant used to disperse the nanotubes both strongly affect the amplification;thus,the complexation provides sensing selectivity towards specific CNTs.Additionally,neither similar uncharged dyes nor CNTs covered with neutral surfactant form such complexes.As model organic molecules,we use a family of polymethine dyes with an easily tailorable molecular structure and,consequently,tunable absorbance and PL characteristics.This provides us with a versatile tool for the controllable photonic and electronic engineering of an efficient probe for CNT detection.Petro Lutsyk Raz Arif Jan Hruby Anatolii Bukivskyi Olexander Vinijchuk Mykola Shandura Viktor Yakubovskyi Yuri Kovtun Graham A Rance Michael Fay Yuri Piryatinski Oleksiy Kachkovsky Anatoli Verbitsky Aleksey Rozhin 2016Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1:2

13Spiral attractor created by vector solitons显示文摘Mode-locked lasers emitting a train of femtosecond pulses called dissipative solitons are an enabling technology for metrology,high-resolution spectroscopy,fibre optic communications,nano-optics and many other fields of science and applications.Recently,the vector nature of dissipative solitons has been exploited to demonstrate mode locked lasing with both locked and rapidly evolving states of polarisation.Here,for an erbium-doped fibre laser mode locked with carbon nanotubes,we demonstrate the first experimental and theoretical evidence of a new class of slowly evolving vector solitons characterized by a double-scroll chaotic polarisation attractor substantially different from Lorenz,Ro¨ssler and Ikeda strange attractors.The underlying physics comprises a long time scale coherent coupling of two polarisation modes.The observed phenomena,apart from the fundamental interest,provide a base for advances in secure communications,trapping and manipulation of atoms and nanoparticles,control of magnetisation in data storage devices and many other areas.Sergey V Sergeyev Chengbo Mou Elena G Turitsyna Alexey Rozhin Sergei K Turitsyn Keith Blow 2014Light(Science & Applications)2014,3,1:1
