| 5 | ATMOSPHERIC CORROSION OF 304AND 316 STAINLESS STEELS显示文摘Atmospheric corrosion of 304 and 316 stainless steels was studied by field exposure test, in which rain water was collected and analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscope (AAS). Emphasis was put on the dissolution of chromium and nickel from the stainless steels by atmospheric corrosion and rain runoff. AAS analyses shows that the amounts of yearly chromium and nickel dissolution were less than 150ng/cm 2 and 50ng/cm 2 respectively for both 304 and 316 stainless steels. XPS analysis reveals the marked Cr enrichment on the 316 stainless steel after one year field exposure. | 6 | Stratification of outcomes for mucinous appendiceal adenocarcinoma with peritoneal metastasis by histological grade显示文摘AIM To investigate the importance of a three-tiered histologic grade on outcomes for patients with mucinous appendiceal adenocarcinoma(MAA).METHODS Two hundred and sixty-five patients with MAA undergoing cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy were identified from a prospective database from 2004 through 2014. All pathology was reviewed by our gastrointestinal subspecialty pathologists and histological grade was classified as well-differentiated, moderately differentiated, and poorly differentiated. Survival analysis was performed using Cox proportional hazards regression.RESULTS There were 201(75.8%) well-, 45(16.9%) moderatelyand 19(7.2%) poorly-differentiated tumors. Histological grade significantly stratified the 5-year overall survival(OS), 94%, 71% and 30% respectively(P < 0.001) as well as the 5-year disease-free survival(DFS) 66%, 21% and 0%, respectively(P < 0.001). Independent predictors of DFS included tumor grade(HR = 1.78, 95%CI: 1.21-2.63, P = 0.008), lymph node involvement(HR = 0.33, 95%CI: 0.11-0.98, P < 0.02), previous surgical score(HR = 1.31, 95%CI: 1.1-1.65, P = 0.03) and peritoneal carcinomatosis index(PCI)(HR = 1.05, 95%CI: 1.02-1.08, P = 0.002). Independent predictors of OS include tumor grade(HR = 2.79, 95%CI: 1.26-6.21, P = 0.01), PCI(HR = 1.10, 95%CI: 1.03-1.16, P = 0.002), and complete cytoreduction(HR = 0.32, 95%CI: 0.11-0.92, P = 0.03). Tumor grade and PCI were the only independent predictors of both DFS and OS. Furthermore, histological grade and lymphovascular invasion stratified the risk of lymph node metastasis into a low(6%) and high(40%) risk groups. CONCLUSION Our data demonstrates that moderately differentiated MAA have a clinical behavior and outcome that is distinct from well-and poorly-differentiated MAA. | 7 | 3D assessment of intervertebral disc degeneration in zebrafish identifies changes in bone density that prime disc disease显示文摘Back pain is a common condition with a high social impact and represents a global health burden.Intervertebral disc disease(IVDD)is one of the major causes of back pain;no therapeutics are currently available to reverse this disease.The impact of bone mineral density(BMD)on IVDD has been controversial,with some studies suggesting osteoporosis as causative for IVDD and others suggesting it as protective for IVDD.Functional studies to evaluate the influence of genetic components of BMD in IVDD could highlight opportunities for drug development and repurposing.By taking a holistic 3D approach,we established an aging zebrafish model for spontaneous IVDD.Increased BMD in aging,detected by automated computational analysis,is caused by bone deformities at the endplates.However,aged zebrafish spines showed changes in bone morphology,microstructure,mineral heterogeneity,and increased fragility that resembled osteoporosis.Elements of the discs recapitulated IVDD symptoms found in humans:the intervertebral ligament(equivalent to the annulus fibrosus)showed disorganized collagen fibers and herniation,while the disc center(nucleus pulposus equivalent)showed dehydration and cellular abnormalities.We manipulated BMD in young zebrafish by mutating sp7 and cathepsin K,leading to low and high BMD,respectively.Remarkably,we detected IVDD in both groups,demonstrating that low BMD does not protect against IVDD,and we found a strong correlation between high BMD and IVDD.Deep learning was applied to high-resolution synchrotron\iCJ image data to analyze osteocyte 3D lacunar distribution and morphology,revealing a role of sp7 in controlling the osteocyte lacunar 3D profile.Our findings suggest potential avenues through which bone quality can be targeted to identify beneficial therapeutics for IVDD. | Erika Kague Francesco Turci Elis Newman Yushi Yang Kate Robson Brown Mona S.Aglan Ghada A.Otaify Sarnia A.Temtamy Victor L.Ruiz-Perez Stephen Cross C.Patrick Royall P.Eckhard Witten Chrissy L.Hammond | 2021 | Bone Research2021,9,4: | 2 |
| 8 | Selenium and Iodine Deficiencies and Selenoprotein Function显示文摘This paper reviews some recent findings on the interactions between selenium deficiency and iodine deficency. Both micronutrients can control the levels of selenoprotein mRNAs, particularly in the thyroid and brain. When selenium and iodine supplies are limiting the compensatory mechanisms work to minimise adverse effects on thyroid hormone metabolsm and thus neurological developtnent. The mechanisms for regulation of selenoproteins in selenium and iodine deficiency are however very tissue-specific. For example, unlike the brain and thyroid,brown adipose tissue is unable to retain selenoproteins in selenium and iodine deficiency and is therefore at greater risk from injurious effects of the deficiencies. | JOHN R.
