| 1 | A randomized open-label trial of on-demand rabeprazole vs ranitidine for patients with non-erosive reflux disease显示文摘AIM:To compare the efficacy of the proton-pump inhibitor,rabeprazole,with that of the H 2-receptor antagonist,ranitidine,as on-demand therapy for relieving symptoms associated with non-erosive reflux disease(NERD).METHODS:This is a single center,prospective,randomized,open-label trial of on-demand therapy with rabeprazole(group A) vs ranitidine(group B) for 4 wk.Eighty-three patients who presented to the American University of Beirut Medical Center with persistent gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) symptoms and a normal upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were eligible for the study.Patients in group A(n = 44) were allowed a maximum rabeprazole dose of 20 mg twice daily,while those in group B(n = 39) were allowed a maximum ranitidine dose of 300 mg twice daily.Efficacy was assessed by patient evaluation of global symptom relief,scores of the SF-36 quality of life(QoL) questionnaires,total number of pills used,and number of medication-free days.RESULTS:Among the 83 patients who were enrolled in the study,76 patients(40 in the rabeprazole group and 36 in the ranitidine group) completed the 4-wk trial.Baseline characteristics were comparable between both groups.After 4 wk,there was no significant difference in the subjective global symptom relief between the rabeprazole and the ranitidine groups(71.4% vs 65.4%,respectively;P = 0.9).There were no statistically significant differences between mean cumulative scores of the SF-36 QoL questionnaire for the two study groups(rabeprazole 22.40 ± 27.53 vs ranitidine 17.28 ± 37.06;P = 0.582).There was no significant difference in the mean number of pills used(rabeprazole 35.70 ± 29.75 vs ranitidine 32.86 ± 26.98;P = 0.66).There was also no statistically significant difference in the mean number of medication-free days between both groups.CONCLUSION:Rabeprazole has a comparable efficacy compared to ranitidine when given on-demand for the treatment of NERD.Both medications were associated with improved quality of life. | Abdallah A Kobeissy Jana G Hashash Faek R Jamali Assaad M Skoury Reham Haddad Sarah El-Samad Rami Ladki Rola Aswad Assaad M Soweid | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,19: | 4 |
| 2 | Early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma co-occurring with hepatitis C virus infection: A mathematical model显示文摘AIM: To develop a mathematical model for the early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) with a panel of serum proteins in combination with α-fetoprotein(AFP).METHODS: Serum levels of interleukin(IL)-8, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(s ICAM-1), soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor Ⅱ(s TNF-RⅡ), proteasome, and β-catenin were measured in 479 subjects categorized into four groups:(1) HCC concurrent with hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection(n = 192);(2) HCV related liver cirrhosis(LC)(n = 96);(3) Chronic hepatitis C(CHC)(n = 96); and(4) Healthy controls(n = 95). The R package and different modules for binary and multi-class classifiers based on generalized linear models were used to model the data. Predictive power was used to evaluate the performance of the model. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis over pairs of groups was used to identify the best cutoffs differentiating the different groups. RESULTS: We revealed mathematical models, based on a binary classifier, made up of a unique panel of serum proteins that improved the individual performance of AFP in discriminating HCC patients from patients with chronic liver disease either with or without cirrhosis. We discriminated the HCC group from the cirrhotic liver group using a mathematical model(-11.3 + 7.38 × Prot + 0.00108 × s ICAM + 0.2574 ×β-catenin + 0.01597 × AFP) with a cutoff of 0.6552, which achieved 98.8% specificity and 89.1% sensitivity. For the discrimination of the HCC group from the CHC group, we used a mathematical model [-10.40 + 1.416 × proteasome + 0.002024 × IL + 0.004096 × s ICAM-1 +(4.251 × 10-4) × s TNF + 0.02567 ×β-catenin + 0.02442 × AFP] with a cutoff 0.744 and achieved 96.8% specificity and 89.7% sensitivity. Additionally, we derived an algorithm, based on a binary classifier, for resolving the multi-class classification problem by using three successive mathematical model predictions of liver disease status. | 3 | Cyanidin 3-glucoside modulated cell cycle progression in liver precancerous lesion,in vivo study显示文摘BACKGROUND Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside(cyan)exhibits antioxidant and anticancer properties.The cell cycle proteins and antimitotic drugs might be promising therapeutic targets in hepatocellular carcinoma.AIM To investigate the effect of cyan administration on cell cycle in hepatic precancerous lesion(PCL)induced by diethylnitrosamine/2-acetylaminofluorene(DEN/2-AAF)in Wistar rats.METHODS In vivo,DEN/2-AAF-induced hepatic PCL,rats were treated with three doses of cyan(10,15,and 20 mg/kg/d,for four consecutive days per week for 16 wk).Blood and liver tissue samples were collected for measurement of the followings;alpha fetoprotein(AFP)liver function and RNA panel differential expression was evaluated via real time polymerase chain reaction.Histopathological examination of liver sections stained with H&E and immunohistochemical study using glutathione S-transferase placental(GSTP)and proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA)antibodies were assessed.RESULTS Cyan administration mitigated the effect of DEN/2-AFF induced PCL,decreased AFP levels,and improved liver function.Remarkably,treatment with cyan dose dependently decreased the long non-coding RNA MALAT1 and tubulin gamma 1 mRNA expressions and increased the levels of miR-125b,all of which are involved in cell cycle and mitotic spindle assembly.Of note,cyan decreased GSTP foci percent area and PCNA positively stained nuclei.CONCLUSION Our results indicated that cyan could be used as a potential therapeutic agent to inhibit liver carcinogenesis in rat model via modulation of cell cycle. | Marwa Matboli Amany H Hasanin Reham Hussein Sarah El-Nakeep Eman K Habib Rawan Ellackany Lobna A Saleh | 2021 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,14: | 1 |

| 7 | The Palestinian Terrestrial Vertebrate Fauna Preserved at the Biology Exhibitions of the Universities of the Gaza Strip显示文摘The Gaza Strip(365 km^(2))of Palestine(27,000 km^(2))is home to a wealth of terrestrial vertebrate fauna.Some of these faunistic species find their ways to preservation at the local universities.Hence,the current study comes to document the Palestinian terrestrial vertebrate fauna acquired by the biology exhibitions(BEs)of Al-Azhar University,Islamic University of Gaza and Al-Aqsa University that are located at the Gaza City of the Gaza Strip.The amphibians,reptiles,birds and mammals preserved at BEs of the universities in question were surveyed and scientifically classified during a three-month period extending from January to March,2012.The study showed that all BEs of local universities are underdeveloped,lacking attention and suffer from specimen scarcity and good preservation.The BE at Al-Azhar University is the best in the arrangement and preservation of bird specimens.A total number of 200 specimens belonging to 54 terrestrial vertebrate fauna species,39 families and 17 orders was recorded at BEs.Reptiles constituted 40.7%of the total species recorded,followed by birds(38.9%),mammals(14.8%)and amphibians(5.6%).The Islamic University of Gaza was considered the best in terms of the number of preserved species(39.8%),followed by Al-Azhar University(36.3%)and Al-Aqsa University(23.9%).The Common Toad(Bufo viridis)was the most preserved among the amphibian species recorded.Squamata was the biggest reptilian order,comprising 20 species(8 lizards and 12 snakes),with the Syrian Black Snake(Coluber jugularis asianus)was the commonest.The Palestine Viper(Vipera palaestinae)is endemic to Palestine and most venomous and dangerous to human health.The Great White Pelican(Pelecanus onocrotalus)was the largest Palestinian bird preserved at BE of Al-Azhar University.The Egyptian Mongoose(Herpestes ichneumon)and the Common Badger(Meles meles)were the biggest mammalian specimens preserved,while the Palestine Mole-rat(Spalax leucodon ehrenbergi)was the only Palestine endemic species encountered among the preserved mammals.Finally,the improvement of BEs of local universities and the construction of a Central Museum of Natural History is highly recommended in order to change the Palestinians’attitudes toward a sustainable ecological conservation in the Gaza Strip. | Abdel Fattah N Abd Rabou Nour J Musallam Eman J Musallam Kamal E Elkahlout Kamal J Elnabris Tarek A El-Bashiti Ismail I Abdel Aziz Reham M Ishneiwra Eqbal S Radwan Hana S Saada Ashraf A Shafei Nedal A Fayyad Saleh N Mwafy Huda E Abu Amra Ramy A Abu Alajeen Mohammed F Abu Owda Randa N Alfarra Haifaa A Hassouna Reem A Hassouna Mohammed R Al-Agha Mohammed A Abd Rabou | 2020 | Research in Ecology2020,2,4: | 0 |
| 8 | Clinicopathological features and treatment outcomes of brain stem gliomas in Saudi population显示文摘AIM: To analyze experiences to identify treatment outcomes and prognostic factors in a Saudi population.METHODS: Medical records of patients with brainstem gliomas treated from July 2001 to December 2012 were reviewed to identify treatment outcomes of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy and associated prognostic factors in a Saudi population.RESULTS: We analyzed 49 brain stem glioma(BSG) patients from July 2001 to December 2012; 31 of them were males(63.3%) with a median age of 12.6 years(range: 8-64 mo). Twenty-two patients(44.9%) had diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas(DIPG) and 15(30.6%) presented with focal/tectal BSG. Histopathology was available in 30 patients(61.2%). Median survival time for the whole cohort was 1.5 years. One and two year OS rates were 51.1% and 41.9% respectively. Two year OS rates for focal/tectal, dorsally exophytic, cervicomedullary and DIPG tumors were 60%, 33.3%, 33.3% and 13.6% respectively(P < 0.0001).
