Osmoprotectants and Antioxidative Enzymes as Screening Tools for Salinity Tolerance in Radish (Raphanus sativus)显示文摘The research addresses the identification of a screening methodology for salt stress tolerance in radish cultivars. In the first experiment, two different radish cultivars(long white and round red) were compared in their morphological and physiological responses to different salinity levels. Round red radish showed better morphological and physiological responses to incremental salinity in terms of yield and better adaptation of overall water relations. In the second experiment, the most tolerant genotype from the first experiment was used as a control against other seven round red radish genotypes ranked by their salinity tolerance according to morphological, physiological and biochemical indices. Salt stress did not significantly affect malondialdehyde(MDA) and hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) content, and ascorbate peroxidase(APX) activity in the studied cultivars. Nonetheless, the relatively salt tolerant cultivar SAXA2 showed higher ability to accumulate compatible solutes(e.g.proline and proteins) and maintain osmotic adjustment. In addition, cultivar SAXA2 also showed considerable increase in glutathione reductase(GR) activity. Our results supported that accumulation of proline and higher GR activity are associated with radish salt tolerance, whereas no relationship with salinity was observed in superoxide dismutase(SOD), MDA and H2O2 content.Rabab Sanoubar Antonio Cellini Giuseppe Gianfranco Francesco Spinelli 2020Horticultural Plant Journal2020,6,1:5
Functional evaluation of the filtering bleb by ultrasound biomicroscopy after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C显示文摘AIM: To study the role of ultrasound biomicroscopy(UBM) in the assessment of the bleb function after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C(MMC). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study including all cases had undergone trabeculectomy with MMC 0.2 mg/mL for 3 min. Participants were recruited from the follow-up cases at Department of Ophthalmology, Tanta University in the period from August 2015 to August 2016. Full history taking and ophthalmological examination were performed. Intraocular pressure(IOP) was measured using Goldmann applanation tonometry and the history of prescribed postoperative antiglaucoma medications was recorded. Accordingly, the trabeculectomy blebs were divided clinically into successful blebs when the IOP post-operative was ≤18 mmHg without medications. Scanning examination of the filtering bleb using UBM examination was performed at the period from 2 to 36 mo after trabeculectomy(13.6±9.7 m o). RESULTS: This study included 33 trabeculectomy filtering blebs of 25 patients(9 males and 16 females). The mean age of patients was 53.2±14.2 y(range 25-71y). We had 20 eyes with complete success, 9 eyes with qualified success, and 4 eyes with failure after trabeculectomy with MMC. The blebs were classified into successful blebs(IOP ≤18 mmHg without antiglaucoma medications), others were classified into qualified successful and failed blebs. There was a significant correlation between certain UBM findings(intra-bleb reflectivity, draining sub-scleral tract, bleb height, and intrableb fluid cysts) and cases with different grades of clinical functional success(P<0.01).CONCLUSION: UBM is an objective tool in the functional assessment of the post-trabeculectomy filtering bleb through a significant correlation between certain UBM parameters and the different grades of clinical functional success.Ali Abbas El Salhy Rabab Mohamed Elseht Ahmed Fekry AI Maria Saied Mohamed Abd El-wahab Shalaby Tarek Ragaee Hossein 2018International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2018,11,2:3
Potential role of killer immunoglobulin receptor genes among individuals vaccinated against hepatitis B virus in Lebanon显示文摘AIM To explore the role of killer immunoglobulin receptor(KIR) genes in responsiveness or non-responsiveness to vaccination against hepatitis B virus.METHODS We recruited 101 voluntary participants between March 2010 and December 2011. Sera samples from vaccinated and non-vaccinated participants were tested for the presence of anti-HBs antibodies as a measure of protection against hepatitis B, hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis B core antibody as indicators ofinfection by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. KIR gene frequencies were determined by polymerase chain reaction.RESULTS Sera samples from 99 participants were tested for the levels of anti-HBs as an indicator of protection(≥ 10 mI U/ml) following vaccination as defined by the World Health Organization international reference standard. Among the vaccinated participants, 47%(35/74) had anti-HBs titers above 100 mI U/ml, 22%(16/74) had antiHBs ranging between 10-100 mI U/ml, and 20%(15/74) had values of less than 10 mI U/ml. We report the lack of significant association between the number of vaccine dosages and the titer of antibodies among our vaccinated participants. The inhibitory KIR2Dl1, KIR2Dl4, KIR3Dl1, KIR3Dl2, and KIR3 Dl were detected in more than 95%, whereas KIR2Dl2, KIR2Dl3, KIR2Dl5(KR2Dl5A and KIR2Dl5B) were expressed in 56%, 84% and 42%(25% and 29%) of participants, respectively. The observed frequency of the activating KIR genes ranged between 35% and 55% except for KIR2DS4, detected in 95% of the study participants(40.6% 2DS4*001/002; 82.2% 2DS4*003/007). KIR2DP1 pseudogene was detected in 99% of our participants, whereas KIR3DP*001/02/04 and KIR3DP1*003 had frequencies of 17% and 100%, respectively. No association between the frequency of KIR genes and anti-HBs antibodies was detected. When we compared the frequency of KIR genes between vaccinated individuals with protective antibodies titers and those who lost their protective antibody levels, we did not detect a significant difference. KIR2Dl5 B was significantly different among different groups of vaccinated participants(group Ⅰ > 100 mI U/ml, group Ⅱ 10-100 mI U/ml, group Ⅲ < 10 mI U/ml and group Ⅳ with undetectable levels of protective antibodies). CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this is the first study screening for the possible role of KIR genes among individuals vaccinated against hepatitis B virus(HBV). Our results can be used to design larger studies to better understand the role of KIR genes in protection against or susceptibility to HBV post vaccination.Nada M Melhem Rami A Mahfouz Khalil Kreidieh Rabab Abdul-Khalik Rolla El-Khatib Reem Talhouk Umayya Musharrafieh Ghassan Hamadeh 2016World Journal of Hepatology2016,8,29:2

Survival and outcomes for co-infection of chronic hepatitis C with and without cirrhosis and COVID-19: A multicenter retrospective study显示文摘BACKGROUND Chronic liver disease, particularly cirrhosis,is associated with worse outcomes in patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).AIM To assess outcomes of COVID-19 infection among patients with pre-existing hepatitis C with or without liver cirrhosis.METHODS This multicenter, retrospective cohort study included all cases of confirmed coinfection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and chronic hepatitis C with or without liver cirrhosis who were admitted to six hospitals(Al-Sahel Hospital,Al-Matareya Hospital,Al-Ahrar Hospital,Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital,Al-Gomhoreya Hospital, and the National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute)affiliated with the General Organization for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes in Egypt.Patients were recruited from May 1,2020,to July 31,2020.Demographic,laboratory,imaging features, and outcomes were collected.Multivariate regression analysis was performed to detect factors affecting mortality.RESULTS This retrospective cohort study included 125 patients with chronic hepatitis C and COVID-19 co-infection,of which 64(51.20%)had liver cirrhosis and 40(32.00%)died.Fever,cough,dyspnea,and fatigue were the most frequent symptoms in patients with liver cirrhosis.Cough, sore throat, fatigue, myalgia, and diarrhea were significantly more common in patients with liver cirrhosis than in noncirrhotic patients. There was no difference between patients with and without cirrhosis regarding comorbidities.Fifteen patients(23.40%)with liver cirrhosis presented with hepatic encephalopathy.Patients with liver cirrhosis were more likely than non-cirrhotic patients to have combined ground-glass opacities and consolidations in CT chest scans:28(43.75%)vs 4(6.55%),respectively(P value<0.001).These patients also were more likely to have severe COVID-19 infection, compared to patients without liver cirrhosis:29(45.31%)vs 11(18.04%),respectively(P value<0.003).Mortality was higher in patients with liver cirrhosis, compared to those with no cirrhosis:33(51.56%)vs 9(14.75%),respectively(P value<0.001).All patients in Child-Pugh class A recovered and were discharged.Cirrhotic mortality occurred among decompensated patients only.A multivariate regression analysis revealed the following independent factors affecting mortality:Male gender(OR 7.17,95%CI:2.19–23.51;P value=0.001),diabetes mellitus(OR 4.03,95%CI:1.49–10.91;P value=0.006),and liver cirrhosis(OR 1.103,95%CI:1.037–1.282;P value<0.0001).We found no differences in liver function,COVID-19 disease severity,or outcomes between patients who previously received direct-acting antiviral therapy(and achieved sustained virological response)and patients who did not receive this therapy.CONCLUSION Patients with liver cirrhosis are susceptible to higher severity and mortality if infected with COVID-19.Male gender, diabetes mellitus, and liver cirrhosis are independent factors associated with increased mortality risk.Shimaa Afify Basem Eysa Fatma Abdel Hamid Omnia M Abo-Elazm Mohamed A Edris Rabab Maher Ahmed Abdelhalim Muhammad Mostafa Abdel Ghaffar Dalia A Omran Hend Ibrahim Shousha 2021World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,42:2
Cytoprotective Effect of Silymarin against Diabetes-Induced Cardiomyocyte Apoptosis in Diabetic Rats显示文摘Objective The beneficial effects of silymarin have been extensively studied in the context of inflammation and cancer treatment, yet much less is known about its therapeutic effect on diabetes. The present study was aimed to investigate the cytoprotective activity of silymarin against diabetes-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Methods Rats were randomly divided into: control group, untreated diabetes group and diabetes group treated with silymarin(120 mg/kg·d) for 10 d. Rats were sacrificed, and the cardiac muscle specimens and blood samples were collected. The immunoreactivity of caspase-3 and Bcl-2 in the cardiomyocytes was measured. Total proteins, glucose, insulin, creatinine, AST, ALT, cholesterol, and triglycerides levels were estimated. Results Unlike the treated diabetes group, cardiomyocyte apoptosis increased in the untreated rats, as evidenced by enhanced caspase-3 and declined Bcl-2 activities. The levels of glucose, creatinine, AST, ALT, cholesterol, and triglycerides declined in the treated rats. The declined levels of insulin were enhanced again after treatment of diabetic rats with silymarin, reflecting a restoration of the pancreatic β-cells activity. Conclusion The findings of this study are of great importance, which confirmed for the first time that treatment of diabetic subjects with silymarin may protect cardiomyocytes against apoptosis and promote survival-restoration of the pancreatic β-cells.Muobarak J.Tuorkey Nabila I.El-Desouki Rabab A.Kamel 2015Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2015,28,1:2

Flexible and biocompatible high-performance solid-state micro-battery for implantable orthodontic system显示文摘To augment the quality of our life, fully compliant personalized advanced health-care electronic system is pivotal. One of the major requirements to implement such systems is a physically flexible high-performance biocompatible energy storage(battery). However, the status-quo options do not match all of these attributes simultaneously and we also lack in an effective integration strategy to integrate them in complex architecture such as orthodontic domain in human body. Here we show,a physically complaint lithium-ion micro-battery(236μg)with an unprecedented volumetric energy(the ratio of energy to device geometrical size)of 200 mWh/cm^(3) after 120 cycles of continuous operation. Our results of 90%viability test confirmed the battery’s biocompatibility. We also show seamless integration of the developed battery in an optoelectronic system embedded in a threedimensional printed smart dental brace. We foresee the resultant orthodontic system as a personalized advanced health-care application, which could serve in faster bone regeneration and enhanced enamel health-care protection and subsequently reducing the overall health-care cost.Arwa T.Kutbee Rabab R.Bahabry Kholod O.Alamoudi Mohamed T.Ghoneim Marlon D.Cordero Amani S.Almuslem Abdurrahman Gumus Elhadj M.Diallo Joanna M.Nassar Aftab M.Hussain Niveen M.Khashab Muhammad M.Hussain 2017npj Flexible Electronics2017,1,1:2
