| 1 | Effects of Chinese herbal medicine on plasma glucose,protein and energy metabolism in sheep显示文摘Background:The use of antibiotics in animal diets is facing negative feedback due to the hidden danger of drug residues to human health.Traditional Chinese herbal medicine has been used to replace antibiotics in the past two decades and played an increasingly important role in livestock production.The present study was carried out to assess the feeding effects of a traditional nourishing Chinese herbal medicine mixture on kinetics of plasma glucose,protein and energy metabolism in sheep.Ruminal fermentation characteristics were also determined.Methods:Four sheep were fed on either mixed hay(MH-diet) or MH-diet supplemented with 2%of Chinese herbal medicine(mixture of Astragalus root,Angelica root and Atractylodes rhizome;CHM-diet) over two 35-day periods using a crossover design.The turnover rate of plasma glucose was measured with an isotope dilution method using[U-^(13)C]glucose.The rates of plasma leucine turnover and leucine oxidation,whole body protein synthesis(WBPS)and metabolic heat production were measured using the[1-^(13)C]leucine dilution and open circuit calorimetry.Results:Body weight gain of sheep was higher(P=0.03) for CHM-diet than for MH-diet.Rumen pH was lower(P=0.02),concentration of rumen total volatile fatty acid tended to be higher(P=0.05) and acetate was higher(P=0.04) for CHM-diet than for MH-diet.Turnover rates of plasma glucose and leucine did not differ between diets.Oxidation rate of leucine tended to be higher(P =0.06) for CHM-diet than for MH-diet,but the WBPS did not differ between diets.Metabolic heat production tended to be greater(P=0.05) for CHM-diet than for MH-diet.Conclusions:The sheep fed on CHM-diet had a higher body weight gain and showed positive impacts on rumen fermentation and energy metabolism without resulting in any adverse response.Therefore,these results suggested that the Chinese herbal medicine mixture should be considered as a potential feed additive for sheep. | Xi Liang Kyota Yamazaki Mohammad Kamruzzaman Xue Bi Arvinda Panthee Hiroaki Sano | 2014 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2014,5,3: | 8 |
| 2 | Numerical analysis of surface subsidence in asymmetric parallel highway tunnels显示文摘Tunnelling related hazards are very common in the Himalayan terrain and a number of such instances have been reported. Several twin tunnels are being planned for transportation purposes which will require good understanding for prediction of tunnel deformation and surface settlement during the engineering life of the structure. The deformational behaviour, design of sequential excavation and support of any jointed rock mass are challenging during underground construction. We have raised several commonly assumed issues while performing stability analysis of underground opening at shallow depth. For this purpose, Kainchi-mod Nerchowck twin tunnels(Himachal Pradesh, India) are taken for in-depth analysis of the stability of two asymmetric tunnels to address the influence of topography, twin tunnel dimension and geometry. The host rock encountered during excavation is composed mainly of moderately to highly jointed grey sandstone, maroon sandstone and siltstones. In contrast to equidimensional tunnels where the maximum subsidence is observed vertically above the centreline of the tunnel, the result from the present study shows shifting of the maximum subsidence away from the tunnel centreline. The maximum subsidence of 0.99 mm is observed at 4.54 m left to the escape tunnel centreline whereas the maximum subsidence of 3.14 mm is observed at 8.89 m right to the main tunnel centreline. | 3 | Differential response of tomato genotypes to Xanthomonas-specific pathogen-associated molecular patterns and correlation with bacterial spot (Xanthomonas perforans) resistance显示文摘Plants depend on innate immune responses to retard the initial spread of pathogens entering through stomata,hydathodes or injuries.These responses are triggered by conserved patterns in pathogen-encoded molecules known as pathogen-associated molecular patterns(PAMPs).Production of reactive oxygen species(ROS)is one of the first responses,and the resulting‘oxidative burst’is considered to be a first line of defense.In this study,we conducted association analyses between ROS production and bacterial spot(BS;Xanthomonas spp.)resistance in 63 genotypes of tomato(Solanum lycopersicum L.).A luminol-based assay was performed on leaf tissues that had been treated with a flagellin 22(flg22),flagellin 28 and a Xanthomonas-specific flg22(flg22-Xac)peptide,to measure PAMP-induced ROS production in each genotype.These genotypes were also assessed for BS disease response by inoculation with Xanthomonas perforans,race T4.Although there was no consistent relationship between peptides used and host response to the BS,there was a significant negative correlation(r=−0.25,P<0.05)between foliar disease severity and ROS production,when flg22-Xac was used.This response could potentially be used to identify the Xanthomonas-specific PRR allele in tomato,and eventually PAMP-triggered immunity loci could be mapped in a segregating population.This has potential significance in tomato improvement. | Krishna Bhattarai Frank J Louws John D Williamson Dilip R Panthee | 2016 | Horticulture Research2016,3,1: | 3 |
| 4 | Control of rock joint parameters on deformation of tunnel opening显示文摘Tunneling in complex rock mass conditions is a challenging task, especially in the Himalayan terrain, where a number of unpredicted conditions are reported. Rock joint parameters such as persistence, spacing and shear strength are the factors which significantly modify the working environments in the vicinity of the openings. Therefore, a detailed tunnel stability assessment is critically important based on the field data collection on the excavated tunnel's face. In this context, intact as well as rock mass strength and deformation modulus is obtained from laboratory tests for each rock type encountered in the study area. Finite element method(FEM) is used for stability analysis purpose by parametrically varying rock joint persistence, spacing and shear strength parameters, until the condition of overbreak is reached. Another case of marginally stable condition is also obtained based on the same parameters. The results show that stability of tunnels is highly influenced by these parameters and the size of overbreak is controlled by joint persistence and spacing.
