| 14 | Green tea extract as a cryoprotectant additive to preserve the motility and DNA integrity of human spermatozoa显示文摘Cryopreservation impairs sperm quality and functions, including motility and DNA integrity.Antioxidant additives in sperm freezing media have previously brought improvements in postthawed sperm quality.Green tea extract(GTE)is widely considered as an excellent antioxidant, and its beneficial role has been proven in other human cells. This study aims to evaluate the GTE as a potential additive in cryopreservation media of human spermatozoa. In part one,the semen of 20 normozoospermic men was used to optimize the concentration of GTE that maintains sperm motility and DNA integrity against oxidative stress, induced by hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)).Spermatozoa were treated with GTE at different concentrations before incubation with H_(2)O_(2).In part two,the semen of 45 patients was cryopreserved with or without 1.0 ng ml^(-1)GTE.After 2 weeks, the semen was thawed, and the effect on sperm motility and DNA fragmentation was observed. Our data showed that GTE significantly protected sperm motility and DNA integrity against oxidative stress induced by H_(2)O_(2)when added at a final concentration of 1.0 ng ml^(-1).We found that the addition of 1.0 ng ml^(-1)GTE to cryopreservation media significantly increased sperm motility and DNA integrity(both P<0.05).More interestingly, patients with high sperm DNA damage benefited similarly from the GTE supplementation. However, there was no significant change in the reactive oxygen species(ROS)level. In conclusion, supplementing sperm freezing media with GTE has a significant protective effect on human sperm motility and DNA integrity, which may be of clinical interest. | Odai AM Alqawasmeh Mingpeng Zhao Carol PS Chan Maran BW Leung Ki C Chow Nikunj Agarwal Jennifer SM Mak Chi C Wang Chi P Pang Tin C Li Wai K Chu David YL Chan | 2021 | Asian Journal of Andrology2021,23,2: | 0 |
| 15 | Polyurethane-degrading fungi from soils contaminated with rocket propellant and their ability to decompose alkyne terminated polybutadiene with urethane显示文摘A large amount of propellant materials are produced every year, and storage and disposal of these propellant materials seriously contributes to environmental pollution.Alkyne terminated polybutadiene with urethane segments(PUPB)is the macromolecule backbone of these propellant materials, and degradation of PUPB is central to the eco-friendly treatment of propellant materials. In this study,we isolated a polyurethane(PU)-and PUPB-degrading fungus from soils contaminated with rocket propellant, and the fungus H14 was identified as Fusarium solani(Mart.)Sacc.based on macro-and micro-morphology as well as phylogenetic analyses. The ability of F.solani H14 to degrade PU film and PUPB patches was evaluated via mass loss, scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and enzyme production ability.Mass loss analyses revealed a 25.8%reduction in mass of PU and 1.3%reduction in mass of PUPB after F.solani H14 was incubated with PU and PUPB for 90 days, respectively. We found that F.solani H14 mycelia significantly colonized both PU and PUPB.SEM images showed that the surface of PU films and PUPB patches formed holes, underwent folding and experienced damage as well as irregular fissuring from the erosion of fungal hypha. Moreover, two possible degradative enzymes, lipase and esterase, were produced by F.solani.Our study opens a new avenue of research for eco-friendly treatments of explosive materials and propellants. This paper represents the first article on the degradation of PUPB patches. | Ren GC Pang AM Gao Y Wu SX Ge ZQ Zhang TF Wanasinghe DN Khan S Mortimer PE Xu JC Gui H | 2021 | Studies in Fungi2021,6,1: | 0 |
| 16 | Hurricane damage assessment for residential construction considering the non-stationarity in hurricane intensity and frequency显示文摘Natural hazards such as hurricanes may cause extensive economic losses and social disruption for civil structures and infrastructures in coastal areas, implying the importance of understanding the construction performance subjected to hurricanes and assessing the hurricane damages properly. The intensity and frequency of hurricanes have been reported to change with time due to the potential impact of climate change. In this paper, a probability-based model of hurricane damage assessment for coastal constructions is proposed taking into account the non-stationarity in hurricane intensity and frequency. The nonhomogeneous Poisson process is employed to model the non-stationarity in hurricane occurrence while the non-stationarity in hurricane intensity is reflected by the time-variant statistical parameters(e.g., mean value and/or standard deviation), with which the mean value and variation of the cumulative hurricane damage are evaluated explicitly. The Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA, is chosen to illustrate the hurricane damage assessment method proposed in this paper. The role of non-stationarity in hurricane intensity and occurrence rate due to climate change in hurricane damage is investigated using some representative changing patterns of hurricane parameters. | WANG Cao LI Quanwang PANG Long ZOU Aming ZHANG Long | 2016 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2016,35,12: | 0 |
