3Estimation of lung cancer burden in Australia,the Philippines,and Singapore:an evaluation of disability adjusted life years显示文摘Objective: Lung cancer is one of the leading cancers and major causes of cancer mortality worldwide. The economic burden associated with the high mortality of lung cancer is high, which accounts for nearly $180 billion on a global scale in 2008. This paper aims to understand the economic burden of lung cancer in terms of disability adjusted life years(DALY) in Australia, the Philippines, and Singapore.Methods: The years of life lost(YLL) and years lost due to disability(YLD) were calculated using the formula developed by Murray and Lopez in 1996 as part of a comprehensive assessment of mortality and disability for diseases, injuries and risk factors in 1990 and projected to 2020. The same formula is represented in the Global Burden of Disease template provided by the World Health Organization. Appropriate assumptions were made when data were unavailable and projections were performed using regression analysis to obtain data for 2015.Results: The total DALYs due to lung cancer in Australia, the Philippines, and Singapore were 91,695, 38,584, and 12,435,respectively, and the corresponding DALY rates per a population of 1,000 were 4.0, 0.4, and 2.2, respectively, with a discount rate of 3%. When researchers calculated DALYs without the discount rate, the burden of disease increased substantially; the DALYs were 117,438 in Australia, 50,977 in the Philippines, and 16,379 in Singapore. Overall, YLL or premature death accounted for more than 95% of DALYs in these countries.Conclusions: Strategies for prevention, early diagnosis, and prompt treatment must be devised for diseases where the major burden is due to mortality.Suman Morampudi Neha Das Arun Gowda Anand Patil 2017Cancer Biology & Medicine2017,14,1:5

5Pedotransfer Functions for Estimating Soil Hydraulic Properties: A Review显示文摘Characterization of soil hydraulic properties is important to environment management; however, it is well recognized that it is laborious, time-consuming and expensive to directly measure soil hydraulic properties. This paper reviews the development of pedotransfer functions(PTFs) used as an alternative tool to estimate soil hydraulic properties during the last two decades. Modern soil survey techniques like satellite imagery/remote sensing has been used in developing PTFs. Compared to mechanistic approaches,empirical relationships between physical properties and hydraulic properties have received wide preference for predicting soil hydraulic properties. Many PTFs based on different parametric functions can be found in the literature. A number of researchers have pursued a universal function that can describe water retention characteristics of all types of soils, but no single function can be termed generic though van Genuchten(VG) function has been the most widely adopted. Most of the reported parametric PTFs focus on estimation of VG parameters to obtain water retention curve(WRC). A number of physical, morphological and chemical properties have been used as predictor variables in PTFs. Conventionally, regression algorithms/techniques(statistical/neural regression) have been used for calibrating PTFs. However, there are reports of utilizing data mining techniques, e.g., pattern recognition and genetic algorithm.It is inferred that it is critical to refine the data used for calibration to improve the accuracy and reliability of the PTFs. Many statistical indices, including root mean square error(RMSE), index of agreement(d), maximum absolute error(ME), mean absolute error(MAE), coefficient of determination(r^2) and correlation coefficient(r), have been used by different researchers to evaluate and validate PTFs. It is argued that being location specific, research interest in PTFs will continue till generic PTFs are developed and validated. 7Mapping of dwarfing gene Rht14 in durum wheat and its effect on seedling vigor, internode length and plant height显示文摘Short coleoptiles associated with GA-insensitive Rht-1 alleles in wheat reduces yield due to poor seedling establishment under dry, or stubble-retained conditions. Hence there is a need for alternative dwarfing genes for wheat improvement programs. GA-sensitive dwarfing gene Rht14 confers semidwarf stature in wheat while retaining longer coleoptiles and early seedling vigor. Two RIL populations were used to identify the map position of Rht14 and to estimate its effect on plant height, coleoptile length, seedling shoot length,spike length and internode length. Rht14 on chromosome 6 A was mapped in the genomic region 383–422 Mbp flanked by GA2oxA9 and wmc753 in a Bijaga Yellow/Castelporziano RIL population. Recombination events between Rht14 and GA2oxA9 in the RIL population indicated that Rht14 might not be allelic to GA2oxA9. The conserved DNA sequence of GA2oxA9 and its flanking region in Castelporziano also suggested that the point of mutation responsible for the Rht14 allele must be a few Mbp away from GA2oxA9. The dwarfing effects of Rht14 on plant height, internode length and seedling vigor were compared with those of Rht-B1 b in an HI 8498/Castelporziano RIL population. Both genes significantly reduced plant height and internode length. Rht-B1 b conferred a significant reduction in coleoptile length and seedling shoot length, whereas Rht14 reduced plant height, but not coleoptile and seedling shoot length. 8Gastric conduit perforation显示文摘As patients with carcinoma of the esophagus live longer, complications associated with the use of a gastric conduit are increasing. Ulcers form in the gastric conduit in 6.6% to 19.4% of patients. There are a few reports of perforation of a gastric conduit in the English literature. Almost all of these were associated with serious complications. We report a patient who developed a tension pneumothorax consequent to spontaneous perforation of an ulcer in the gastric conduit 7 years after the index surgery in a patient with carcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction. He responded well to conservative management. Complications related to a gastric conduit can be because of multiple factors. Periodic endoscopic surveillance of gastric conduits should be considered as these are at a higher risk of ulcer formation than a normal stomach. Long term treatment with proton pump inhibitors may decrease complications. 9Evaluation of antidiabetic and related actions of some Indian medicinal plants in diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To evaluate antidiabetic activity of chloroform extracts of Acacia arabica bark, Benincasa hispida fruit,Tinispora cordifolia stem,Ocimum sanctum areal parts and Jatropha curcus leaves.Methods:The chloroform extracts of Acacia arabica bark,Benincasa hispida fruit,Tinospora cordifolia stem,aerial part of Ocimum sanctum and Jatropha curcus leaves were evaluated at different doses(250 and 500 mg/kg body weight.) for antidiabetic potentials in alloxan induced diabetic albino rats.The extracts were administered for two weeks in different groups whereas tolbutamide(80 mg/kg body weight) was used as reference standard throughout study.Results:The result of present study showed test compounds significantly decreases elevated level of serum glucose and also caused to reverse the cholesterol,triglyceride,HDL and LDL values when compared to untreated diabetic rats.Conclusions:Our finding indicates that different test extracts were able to ameliorate the derangements in lipid metabolism caused by diabetes mellitus in alloxan induced diabetic rats towards normal level.Raju N Patil Ravindra Y Patil Bharati Ahirwar Dheeraj Ahirwar 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,1:4
10Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular risk显示文摘Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. The spectrum of disease ranges from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis and progression to cirrhosis. Compelling evidence over the past several years has substantiated a significant link between NAFLD and cardiovascular disease ranging from coronary artery disease to subclinical carotid atherosclerosis. 16Characterising acute ischaemic stroke thrombi:insights from histology,imaging and emerging impedance-based technologies显示文摘Treatment of acute ischaemic stroke(AIS)focuses on rapid recanalisation of the occluded artery.In recent years,advent of mechanical thrombectomy devices and new procedures have accelerated the analysis of thrombi retrieved during the endovascular thrombectomy procedure.Despite ongoing developments and progress in AIS imaging techniques,it is not yet possible to conclude definitively regarding thrombus characteristics that could advise on the probable efficacy of thrombolysis or thrombectomy in advance of treatment.Intraprocedural devices with dignostic capabilities or new clinical imaging approaches are needed for better treatment of AIS patients.In this review,what is known about the composition of the thrombi that cause strokes and the evidence that thrombus composition has an impact on success of acute stroke treatment has been examined.This review also discusses the evidence that AIS thrombus composition varies with aetiology,questioning if suspected aetiology could be a useful indicator to stroke physicians to help decide the best acute course of treatment.Furthermore,this review discusses the evidence that current widely used radiological imaging tools can predict thrombus composition.Further use of new emerging technologies based on bioimpedance,as imaging modalities for diagnosing AIS and new medical device tools for detecting thrombus composition in situ has been introduced.Whether bioimpedance would be beneficial for gaining new insights into in situ thrombus composition that could guide choice of optimum treatment approach is also reviewed.Smita Patil Jean Darcourt Pierluca Messina Franz Bozsak Christophe Cognard Karen Doyle 2022Stroke & Vascular Neurology2022,7,4:3
