2Metastatic type 1 gastric carcinoid:A real threat or just a myth?显示文摘AIM:To describe disease characteristics and treatment modalities in a group of rare patients with metastatic gastric carcinoid type 1(GCA1).METHODS:Information on clinical,biochemical,radiological,histopathological findings,the extent of the disease,as well as the use of different therapeutic modalities and the long-term outcome were recorded.Patients’data were assessed at presentation,and thereafter at 6 to 12 monthly intervals both clinically and biochemically,but also endoscopically and histopathologically.Patients were evaluated for the presence of specific symptoms;the presence of autoimmune disorders and the presence of other gastrointestinal malignancies in other family members were also recorded.The evaluation of response to treatment was defined using established WHO criteria.RESULTS:We studied twenty consecutive patients with a mean age of 55.1 years.The mean follow-up period was 83 mo.Twelve patients had regional lymph node metastases and 8 patients had liver metastases.The primary tumor mean diameter was 20.13±10.83mm(mean±SD).The mean Ki-67 index was 6.8%±11.2%.All but one patient underwent endoscopic or surgical excision of the tumor.The disease was stable in all but 3 patients who had progressive liver disease.All patients remained alive during the follow-up period.CONCLUSION:Metastatic GCA1 carries a good overall prognosis,being related to a tumor size of≥1 cm,an elevated Ki-67 index and high serum gastrin levels.Simona Grozinsky-Glasberg Dimitrios Thomas Jonathan R Strosberg Ulrich-Frank Pape Stephan Felder Apostolos V Tsolakis Krystallenia I Alexandraki Merav Fraenkel Leonard Saiegh Petachia Reissman Gregory Kaltsas David J Gross 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,46:11
3Transcranial magnetic stimulation: potential treatment for co-occurring alcohol, traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorders显示文摘Alcohol use disorder(AUD), mild traumatic brain injury(m TBI), and posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) commonly co-occur(AUD + m TBI + PTSD). These conditions have overlapping symptoms which are, in part, reflective of overlapping neuropathology. These conditions become problematic because their co-occurrence can exacerbate symptoms. Therefore, treatments must be developed that are inclusive to all three conditions. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(r TMS) is non-invasive and may be an ideal treatment for co-occurring AUD + m TBI + PTSD. There is accumulating evidence on r TMS as a treatment for people with AUD, m TBI, and PTSD each alone. However, there are no published studies to date on r TMS as a treatment for co-occurring AUD + m TBI + PTSD. This review article advances the knowledge base for r TMS as a treatment for AUD + m TBI + PTSD. This review provides background information about these co-occurring conditions as well as r TMS. The existing literature on r TMS as a treatment for people with AUD, TBI, and PTSD each alone is reviewed. Finally, neurobiological findings in support of a theoretical model are discussed to inform TMS as a treatment for co-occurring AUD + m TBI + PTSD. The peer-reviewed literature was identified by targeted literature searches using Pub Med and supplemented by cross-referencing the bibliographies of relevant review articles. 4High egg rejection rate in a Chinese population of grey-backed thrush(Turdus hortulorum)显示文摘Several previous studies have indicated that nest sanitation behavior is a general adaptation in altricial birds,with egg recog nition capacity evolvi ng as a specific response to in terspecific brood parasitism(IBP).However,a rece nt study suggested an alternative hypothesis,con cludi ng that con specific brood parasitism(CBP)selects for egg rejection in thrushes,with IBP as a by-product.In the present study,we used a spectrophotometer to quantify egg coloration and egg mimicry and performed artificial parasitism experiments in the grey?backed thrush(Turdus hortulorum).We showed that individuals of this species rejected 100%of 12 foreign eggs,without IBP or CBP detected.In a review of previous studies,we also discuss possible explanations for the high egg rejection rate in the grey-backed thrush and suggest areas for future study.Altricial birds have evolved advaneed reproductive behavior to in crease the fitn ess of their offspring by buildi ng elaborate structures(i.e.,nests),in which they lay eggs and rear their nestlings(Hansell,2000).Bird nests not only provide a suitable place for nestling development,but also act as a concealed location for safety from predators.Furthermore,bird parents have evolved nest sanitation behavior to clean foreig n objects from their n ests,in eluding feces,eggshells,branches,and leaves,because they induce predation,facilitate microorganism growth,damage eggs,or hurt nestlings during brooding(Guigueno&Sealy,2012).Therefore,nest sanitation has evolved as a general behavior in altricial birds for distinguishing between egg-shaped and non-egg-shaped objects.Can-Chao Yang Long-Wu Wang Wei Liang ANDers Pape Moller 2019Zoological Research2019,40,3:5
5Differently sized cuckoos pose different threats to hosts显示文摘Hole-nesting tits Parus spp.have been classified as'unsuitable'hosts for cuckoo parasitism because cuckoos cannot enter a cavity if the entrance is too small.However,Chinese tits could re-ject alien eggs and egg ejection rate increased with the local diversity of parasitic cuckoo species.Antiparasitic behavior among Chinese tits may have evolved due to greater size variation among sympatric cuckoo species.This raises the question of whether differently sized parasitic cuckoos pose different threats to Chinese tits.A green-backed tit Parus monticolus population that is sym-patric with Asian emerald cuckoo Chrysococcyx maculatus(eme-cuckoo,small-sized parasite)and common cuckoo Cuculus canorus(com-cuckoo,large-sized parasite),and a cinereous tit P.cinereus population that is only sympatric with com-cuckoo were chosen as study organisms.We observed behavioral response and recorded alarm calls of the 2 tit species to eme-cuckoo,com-cuckoo,chipmunk Tamias sibiricus(a nest predator)and dove Streptopelia orientalis(a harm-less control),and subsequently played back alarm calls to conspecific incubating females.In dummy experiments,both tit species performed intense response behavior to chipmunk,but rarely responded strongly to the 3 avian species.In playback experiments,both tit species responded strongly to conspecific chipmunk alarm calls,but rarely responded to dove alarm calls.The inten-sity of response of incubating female green-backed tits to eme-cuckoo and com-cuckoo alarm calls were similar to that of chipmunk alarm calls,while the intensity to eme-cuckoo alarm calls was higher than the intensity to dove alarm calls which was similar to that of com-cuckoo alarm calls.In contrast,few female cinereous tits responded to eme-cuckoo and com-cuckoo alarm calls.These findings indicated that the threat level of eme-cuckoo was slightly greater than that of com-cuckoo for sympatric green-backed tits,but not for allopatric cinereous tits.Jiangping YU Mingju E Wei SUN Wei LIANG Haitao WANG Anders Pape MΦLLER 2020Current Zoology2020,66,3:4

9Adaptation or ecological trap? Altered nest-site selection by Reed Parrotbills after an extreme flood显示文摘Background:Floods and other extreme events have disastrous effects on wetland breeding birds.However,such events and their consequences are difficult to study due to their rarity and unpredictable occurrence.Methods:Here we compared nest-sites chosen by Reed Parrotbills(Paradoxornis heudei) during June-August 2016 in Yongnianwa Wetlands,Hebei Province,China,before and after an extreme flooding event.Results:Twenty-three nests were identified before and 13 new nests after the flood.There was no significant difference in most nest-site characteristics,such as distance from the road,height of the reeds in which nests were built,or nest volume before or after the flood.However,nests after the flood were located significantly higher in the vegetation compared to before the flood(mean ± SE:1.17 ± 0.13 m vs.0.75 ± 0.26 m,p < 0.01).However,predation rate also increased significantly after the flood(67% vs.25%,p = 0.030).Conclusions:Our results suggested that Reed Parrotbills demonstrated behavioral plasticity in their nest-site selection.Thus,they appeared to increase the height of their nests in response to the drastically changing water levels in reed wetlands,to reduce the likelihood that their nests would be submerged again by flooding.However,predation rate also increased significantly after the flood,suggesting that the change in nest height to combat the threat of flooding made the nests more susceptible to other threats,such as predation.Animals' response to rare climatic events,such as flooding,may produce ecological traps if they make the animals more susceptible to other kinds of threats they are more likely to continue to encounter.Laikun Ma Jianwei Zhang Jianping Liu Canchao Yang Wei Liang Anders Pape M?ller 2019Avian Research2019,10,1:3

14Alpha声学指数效应的meta分析显示文摘通过声学指数量化声音的特征反映生物的组成和生境信息,是一种高效率、低干扰的监测方式。该研究领域在近十多年来得到了快速的发展,不断有新的声学指数被提出,同时也有大量的实证研究。声学指数可分为反映录音内信息的alpha声学指数和比较不同录音之间差异的beta声学指数,其中alpha声学指数的实证研究较多。本文在汇总已有研究数据的基础上进行meta分析,关注alpha声学指数与动物多样性、生境质量、动物活跃性之间关联的方向和程度。基于文献调研,本文对8个常用的声学指数进行了总结分析:声学复杂度指数(acoustic complexity index,ACI)、声学熵指数(acoustic entropy index,H)、生物声学指数(bioacoustic index,BI)、标准化声景差异指数(normalized difference soundscape index,NDSI)、声学多样性指数(acoustic diversity index,ADI)、声学均匀度指数(acoustic evenness index,AEI)、声学丰富度指数(acoustic richness index,AR)和频峰数(number of peaks,NP)。其中,ACI是使用频次最高的声学指数,与动物多样性、生境质量和动物活跃性均存在正相关的关系。ACI与陆地动物活跃性之间的联系最为密切,总效应量的均值达到0.53。然而,其他声学指数与动物多样性、生境质量和动物活跃性之间的关联程度普遍不高,平均解释力不足10%。此外,AEI与生境质量呈显著负相关的关系(相关系数的均值为–0.18,符号检验P=0.001),是本研究发现的唯一显著负相关的联系。本研究结果可为常用alpha声学指数的选用提供参考依据。王言一 张屹美 夏灿玮 Anders Pape Møller 2023生物多样性2023,31,1:2

18Annual spatio-temporal migration patterns of Hooded Cranes wintering in Izumi based on satellite tracking and their implications for conservation显示文摘Background: The Hooded Crane(Grus monacha) is listed as a vulnerable species by IUCN. Knowledge about the migration of the Hooded Crane is still limited. Here we reported the spatio-temporal migration patterns of Hooded Cranes wintering in Izumi, Japan, as well as important stopover areas for their conservation.Methods: Four adult and five subadult cranes, all wintering in Izumi, Japan, were fitted with satellite transmitters(GPS–GSM system) at their stopover sites in northeastern China in 2014 and 2015. We analyzed the time and duration of adults and subadults in spring and autumn migration, as well as the time and duration they stayed in breeding and wintering ground. In addition, we analyzed the land use of the cranes in stopover areas.Results: Adult cranes took much longer time to migrate both north in spring(mean days) compared with subadult cranes(15.3 and 5.2 days, respectively). H= 44.3 days) and south in fall(mean = 54.0 owever, the subadults had longer wintering(mean = 149.8 days) and nomadic(breeding season for adults) seasons(mean d with adults(133.8 and 122.3 days, respectively). Three important stopover areas have been= 196.8 days) compare identified: the region around Muraviovka Park in Russia, the Songnen Plain in China, and the west coast of South Korea, where cranes spent most of their migration time(62.2 and 85.7% in spring and autumn, respectively). During migration, nomadic period and winter, Hooded Cranes usually stay in croplands for resting and feeding. 19Plumage brightness and uropygial gland secretions in barn swallows显示文摘The uropygial gland has been hypothesized to play a role in sexual signaling through a 'make-up' function derived from the effects of secretions from the gland on the appearanee of the plumage and bare parts of the body. Here we show that plumage brightness of dorsal feathers of individual barn swallows Hirundo rustica was greater in mated than in unmated individuals. In addition, plumage brightness in creased with colony size. Furthermore, plumage bright ness was positively correlated with the amount of wax in the uropygial gland, negatively correlated with time of sampling of uropygial wax (perhaps because more wax is present early in the morning after an entire night of wax production without any preening), and negatively correlated with the number of chewing lice that degrade the plumage. Experimentally preventing barn swallows from access to the uropygial gland reduced plumage brightness, showing a causal link between secretions from the uropygial gland and plumage brightness.
