3Competitor densities,habitat,and weather:effects on interspecific interactions between wild deer species显示文摘There is a growing interest on the potential interplay between weather,habitat,and interspecific competition on population dynamics of wild herbivores.Favorable environmental conditions may buffer the negative effects of competition;conversely,competition may be expected to be stronger under harsh environmental conditions.We investigated relationships between competitor abundance,weather,and habitat cover on density and local distribution of a medium-sized herbivore,the roe deer Capreolus capreolus,as well as its spatial overlap with fallow deer Dama dama in a Mediterranean protected area.Over 11 years(2007–2017),roe deer density was not affected by spring–summer rainfall in the previous year and decreased with increasing density of fallow deer in the previous year.Hence,over the considered temporal scale,results supported a major role of competition over weather in influencing population trends of roe deer.At a finer spatial scale,roe deer occupancy was negatively affected by local abundance of fallow deer,especially in“poorer”habitats.We found a slight support for a positive effect of fallow deer density on interspecific spatial overlap.Moreover,fine-scale spatial overlap between deer species increased with decreasing rainfall in spring–summer.Fallow deer were introduced to our study area in historical times and their role as superior competitors over roe deer has been found also in other study areas.We suggest a potential role of harsh weather conditions during the growing season of vegetation(i.e.scarce rainfall)in triggering the potential for ecological overlap,emphasizing the negative effects of interspecific competition.Francesco FERRETTI NiccolòFATTORINI 2021Integrative Zoology2021,16,5:1

14Photovoltaic-thermal solar-assisted heat pump systems for building applications:Integration and design methods显示文摘The photovoltaic-thermal collector is one of the most interesting technology for solar energy conversion,com-bining electric and thermal energy production in a single device.Vapour-compression heat pump is already considered the most suitable clean technology for buildings thermal energy needs.The combination of these two technologies in an integrated“photovoltaic-thermal solar-assisted heat pump”(PVT-SAHP)system allows reaching a high fraction of the building thermal needs covered by renewable energy sources and to improve the performances of both the photovoltaic-thermal collector and the heat pump.The first is cooled down increasing its energy conversion efficiency,while providing low-temperature thermal energy to the second,which benefits from a higher evaporation temperature.The review study presents the state-of-art of photovoltaic-thermal solar-assisted heat pump systems intended to cover thermal energy needs in buildings,with a particular focus on the integration methodologies,the possible configurations,the use of different sources and the design of sub-system components.These issues are addressed by much scientific research,to improve the reliability and applicability of this technology,as an option for the building decarbonization.This study aims to present PVT-SAHP systems in an organic and critical way to propose a useful tool for future research developments.More in detail,the work highlights the fact that the integration of photovoltaic-thermal collectors as evaporator of the heat pump in direct-expansion systems allows the highest heat recovery and performances.However,the distinction of the two circuits lead to more reliable,flexible and robust systems,especially when combined with a second heat source,being able to cover both heating and cooling needs.The implementation of real-time control strategy,as well as the continuous development of the compressor and refrigerant industries is positively influencing this technology,which is receiving more and more attention from scientific research as a suitable solution for nearly zero energy buildings.Alessandro Miglioli NiccolòAste Claudio Del Pero Fabrizio Leonforte 2023Energy and Built Environment2023,4,1:0
15DICE:An open-source MATLAB application for quantification and parametrization of digital outcrop model-based fracture datasets显示文摘An open-source MATLAB application(app)named Discontinuity Intensity Calculator and Estimator(DICE)was developed in order to quantitatively characterize the fractures,or in more general,discontinuities within a rocky outcrop in three-dimensional(3D)digital data,such as digital outcrop model(DOM).The workflow proposed for the parametrization of the discontinuities consists of the following steps:(1)Analysis and mapping of the fractures detected within the 3D DOMs;(2)Calculation of the orientation,position and dimensions of discontinuities that are represented by best-fit circular planes;(3)Determining the discontinuity parameters(dimension,distribution,spacing and intensity)by the DICE algorithm using different 3D oriented sampling techniques(3D oriented scanline,3D oriented circular scan window and spherical scan volume).Different sampling methods were bench tested with a synthetic,as well as a natural case study,and compared in order to understand the advantages and limitations of each technique.The 3D oriented circular scan window appears to be the most effective method for fracture intensity estimation with high accuracy(error 0.4%)and stability with variations in scan radius.Niccolò Menegoni Daniele Giordan Riccardo Inama Cesare Perotti 2023Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2023,15,5:0
16Cerebellum and neurodegenerative diseases:Beyond conventional magnetic resonance imaging显示文摘The cerebellum plays a key role in movement control and in cognition and cerebellar involvement is described in several neurodegenerative diseases.While conventional magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) is widely used for brain and cerebellar morphologic evaluation,advanced MRI techniques allow the investigation of cerebellar microstructural and functional characteristics.Volumetry,voxel-based morphometry,diffusion MRI based fiber tractography,resting state and task related functional MRI,perfusion,and proton MR spectroscopy are among the most common techniques applied to the study of cerebellum.In the present review,after providing a brief description of each technique's advantages and limitations,we focus on their application to the study of cerebellar injury in major neurodegenerative diseases,such as multiple sclerosis,Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease and hereditary ataxia.A brief introduction to the pathological substrate of cerebellar involvement is provided for each disease,followed by the review of MRI studies exploring structural and functional cerebellar abnormalities and by a discussion of the clinical relevance of MRI measures of cerebellar damage in terms of both clinical status and cognitive performance.Enricomaria Mormina Maria Petracca Giulia Bommarito Niccolò Piaggio Sirio Cocozza Matilde Inglese 2017World Journal of Radiology2017,9,10:5

19Follow-up after curative resection for gastric cancer: Is it time to tailor it?显示文摘There is still no consensus on the follow-up frequency and regimen after curative resection for gastric cancer.Moreover,controversy exists regarding the utility of follow-up in improving survival,and the recommendations of experts and societies vary considerably.The main reason to establish surveillance programs is to diagnose tumor recurrence or metachronous cancers early and to thereby provide prompt treatment and prolong survival.In the setting of gastric malignancies,other reasons have been put forth:(1)the detection of adverse effects of a previous surgery,such as malnutrition or digestive sequelae;(2)the collection of data;and(3)the identification of psychological and/or social problems and provision of appropriate support to the patients.No randomized controlled trials on the role of follow-up after curative resection of gastric carcinoma have been published.Herein,the primary retrospective series and systematic reviews on this subject are analyzed and discussed.Furthermore,the guidelines from international and national scientific societies are discussed.Followup is recommended by the majority of institutions;however,there is no real evidence that follow-up can improve long-term survival rates.Several studies have demonstrated that it is possible to stratify patients submitted to curative gastrectomy into different classes according to the risk of recurrence.Furthermore,promising studies have identified several molecular markers that are related to the risk of relapse and to prognosis.Based on these premises,a promising strategy will be to tailor follow-up in relation to the patient and tumor characteristics,molecular marker status,and individual risk of recurrence.Paolo Aurello Niccolò Petrucciani Laura Antolino Diego Giulitti Francesco D'Angelo Giovanni Ramacciato 2017World Journal of Gastroenterology2017,23,19:1
