| 1 | Olive oil consumption and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘The clinical implications of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases(NAFLD)derive from their potential to progress to fibrosis and cirrhosis.Inappropriate dietary fat intake,excessive intake of soft drinks,insulin resistance and increased oxidative stress results in increased free fatty acid delivery to the liver and increased hepatic triglyceride(TG)accumulation.An olive oil-rich diet decreases accumulation of TGs in the liver,improves postprandial TGs,glucose and glucagonlike peptide-1 responses in insulin-resistant subjects, and upregulates glucose transporter-2 expression in the liver.The principal mechanisms include:decreased nuclear factor-kappaB activation,decreased lowdensity lipoprotein oxidation,and improved insulin resistance by reduced production of inflammatory cytokines(tumor necrosis factor,interleukin-6)and improvement of jun N-terminal kinase-mediated phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate-1.The beneficial effect of the Mediterranean diet is derived from monounsaturated fatty acids,mainly from olive oil.In this review,we describe the dietary sources of the monounsaturated fatty acids,the composition of olive oil,dietary fats and their relationship to insulin resistance and postprandial lipid and glucose responses in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis,clinical and experimental studies that assess the relationship between olive oil and NAFLD,and the mechanism by which olive oil ameliorates fatty liver,and we discuss future perspectives. | Nimer Assy Faris Nassar Gattas Nasser Maria Grosovski | 2009 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,15: | 22 |
| 2 | Soft drinks consumption and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is a common clinical condition which is associated with metabolic syndrome in 70% of cases.Inappropriate dietary fat intake,excessive intake of soft drinks,insulin resistance and increased oxidative stress combine to increase free fatty acid delivery to the liver,and increased hepatic triglyceride accumulation contributes to fatty liver.Regular soft drinks have high fructose corn syrup which contains basic sugar building blocks,fructose 55% and glucose 45%.Soft drinks are the leading source of added sugar worldwide,and have been linked to obesity,diabetes,and metabolic syndrome.The consumption of soft drinks can increase the prevalence of NAFLD independently of metabolic syndrome.During regular soft drinks consumption,fat accumulates in the liver by the primary effect of fructose which increases lipogenesis,and in the case of diet soft drinks,by the additional contribution of aspartame sweetener and caramel colorant which are rich in advanced glycation end products that potentially increase insulin resistance and inflammation.This review emphasizes some hard facts about soft drinks,reviews fructose metabolism,and explains how fructose contributes to the development of obesity,diabetes,metabolic syndrome,and NAFLD. | William Nseir Fares Nassar Nimer Assy | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,21: | 20 |
| 3 | Octreotide ameliorates gastric lesions in chronically mild stressed rats显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the effect of chronic mild stress(CMS) on the emergence of gastric ulcers and possible modulation by octreotide,a synthetic somatostatin analogue. METHODS:Adult male Wistar rats were subjected to nine different unpredictable random stress procedures for 21 d,a multifactorial interactional animal model for CMS.Octreotide was administered daily for 21 d at two dose levels(50 and 90μg/kg)before exposure to stress procedure.Macro-and microscopical assessments were made,in addition to quantification of plasma corticosterone and gastric mucosal inflammatory,oxidative stress, and apoptotic biomarkers. RESULTS:Exposure to CMS elevated plasma corticosterone(28.3±0.6μg/dL,P=0.002),an event that was accompanied by gastric lesions(6.4±0.16 mm,P=0.01) and confirmed histopathologically.Moreover,the insult elevated gastric mucosal lipid peroxides(13±0.5 nmol/g tissue,P=0.001),tumor necrosis factor-α(3008.6±78.18 pg/g tissue,P<0.001),prostaglandin E2(117.1 ±4.31 pg/g tissue,P=0.002),and caspase-3 activity (2.4±0.14 OD/mg protein,P=0.002).Conversely,CMS mitigated interleukin-10(627.9±12.82 pg/g tissue,P= 0.001).Furthermore,in animals exposed to CMS,octreotide restored plasma corticosterone(61%and 71%from CMS,P=0.002)at both dose levels.These beneficial effects were associated with a remarkable suppression of gastric lesions(38%and 9%from CMS,P=0.01)and reversal of derangements in gastric mucosa. | 4 | Antioxidant and antiangiogenic activities of the essential oils of Myristica fragrans and Morinda citrifolia显示文摘Objective:Toinvestigate the anti-angiogenic activity and antioxidant properties of Myristica fragrans(M.fragrans)(nutmeg) and Morinda citrifolia(M.citrifolia)(mengkudu) oils. Methods:The nutmeg and megkudu essential oils were obtained by steam distillation. The antioxidant activities of both essenlial oils were delermined by beta-carotene/ linoleic acid bleaching assay and reducing power while the anti-angiogenic activity was investigated using rat aortic ring assay using various concentrations.Results:The results showed that nutmeg oil has higher antioxidant activity than mengkudu oil.The nutmeg oil effectively inhibited the oxidation of linoleic acid with(88.68±0.1)%while the inhibition percentage of oxidation of linoleic acid of the mengkudu oil is(69.44±0.4)%.The nutmeg oil and mengkudu oil showed reducing power with an EC50 value of 181.4μg/mL and 3 043.0μg/mL,respectively.The anliangiogenic activity of nutmeg oil showed significant antiangiogenic activity with IC50 of 77.64μg/mL comparing to mengkudu oil which exhibits IC50 of 109.30μg/mL.Conclusion:Bioactive compound(s) will be isolated from the nutmeg essential oil to be developed as antiangiogenic drugs. | Suthagar Pillai Piaru Roziahanim Mahmud Amin Malik Shah Abdul Majid Zeyad Daoud Mahmoud Nassar | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,4: | 3 |

| 6 | Predictors of hypoglycemia in insulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Basrah显示文摘AIM To measure the incidence and determinants(predictors) of hypoglycemia among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) who were on insulin treatment for at least one year. METHODS The present study is an out-patients based inquiry about the risk and predictors of hypoglycemia among patients with T2DM seeking care at the Al-Faiha Specialized Diabetes, Endocrine, and Metabolism Center, in Basrah over a period of 7 mo(from 15^(th) of April, 2013 to 15^(th) of October, 2013). The data used in the study were based on all detailed interview and selected laboratory investigations. A total of 336 patients could be included in the study.RESULTS The incidence of overall hypoglycemia among the studied patients was 75.3% within the last 3 mo preceding the interview. The incidence of hypoglycemia subtypes were 10.2% for severe hypoglycemia requiring medical assistance in the hospital, 44.36% for severe hypoglycemia treated at home by family; this includes both confirmed severe hypoglycemia with an incidence rate of 14.6% and unconfirmed severe hypoglycemia for which incidence rate was 29.76%. Regarding mild self-treated hypoglycemia, the incidence of confirmed mild hypoglycemia was 21.42%, for unconfirmed mildhypoglycemia the incidence rate was 50.0% and for total mild hypoglycemia, the incidence rate was 71.42%. The most important predictors of hypoglycemia were a peripheral residence, increasing knowledge of hypoglycemia symptoms, in availability and increasing frequency of self-monitoring blood glucose, the presence of peripheral neuropathy, higher diastolic blood pressure, and lower Hemoglobin A1c.CONCLUSION Hypoglycemia is very common among insulin-treated patients with T2DM in Basrah. | 8 | Diallyl sulfide protects against N-nitrosodiethylamine-induced liver tumorigenesis:Role of aldose reductase显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the protective effect of diallyl sulfide (DAS) against N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)-induced liver carcinogenesis.METHODS: Male Wistar rats received either NDEA or NDEA together with DAS as protection.Liver energy metabolism was assessed in terms of lactate,pyruvate,lactate/pyruvate,ATP levels,lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activities.In addition,membrane disintegration of the liver cells was evaluated by measuring lipid-peroxidation products,measured as malondialdehyde (MDA); nitric oxide (NO) levels; glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase),catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities.Liver DNA level,glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and cytochrome c oxidase activities were used as DNA fragmentation indices.Aldose reductase (AR) activity was measured as an index for cancer cells resistant to chemotherapy and histopathological examination was performed on liver sections from different groups.RESULTS: NDEA significantly disturbed liver functions and most of the aforementioned indices.Treatment with DAS significantly restored liver functions and hepatocellular integrity; improved parameters of energy metabolism and suppressed free-radical generation.CONCLUSION: We provide evidence that DAS exerts a protective role on liver functions and tissue integrity in face of enhanced tumorigenesis caused by NDEA,as well as improving cancer-cell sensitivity to chemotherapy.This is mediated through combating oxidative stress of free radicals,improving the energy metabolic state of the cell,and enhancing the activity of G6Pase,GST and AR enzymes. | Safinaz S Ibrahim Noha N Nassar | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,40: | 2 |

Gas turbines are designed to operate with the best efficiency during normal operating conditions and at specific operating points. However, the real world is non-optimal and the engine may have to operate at off-design conditions due to load requirements, different ambient temperatures, fuel types, relative humidity and driven equipment speed.Also more and more base-load gas turbines have to work today on partial load too, which can affect the hot gas path condition and life expectancy. At these off-design conditions, gas turbine's efficiency and life deterioration rate might significantly deviate from the design specifications. During a gas turbine's life, power generation providers might need to perform several overhauls or upgrades for their engines. Thus, the off-design performance after the overhaul also might be changed. Prediction of gas turbine's off-design performance is essential to economical operation of power generation equipment. In this paper, an integrated system for complex design and off-design performance prediction(Ax STREAM? Platform) is presented. It allows to predict gas turbine engine's design and off-design performance almost automatically. Each component's performance such as turbine, compressor, combustor and entire secondary flow(cooling) system is directly and simultaneously calculated for every off-design performance request, making possible to build an off-design performance map including cooling system. The example of off-design performance estimation of industrial gas turbine engine is presented. | 14 | An Invasive Succulent Plant (Kalanchoe daigremontiana) Influences Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Mineralization in a Neotropical Semiarid Zone显示文摘It has long been recognized that plant invasions may alter carbon(C) and nitrogen(N) cycles, but the direction and magnitude of such alterations have been rarely quantified. In this study, we quantified the effects caused by the invasion of a noxious exotic plant,Kalanchoe daigremontiana(Crassulaceae), on C and N mineralization and enzymatic and microbial activities in the soil of a semiarid locality in Venezuela. We compared soil parameters associated with these processes(C and N mineralization time and the cumulative values, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity, and activities of dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase, glucosaminidase, and urease) between invaded and adjacent non-invaded sites. In addition, correlations among these parameters and the soil physical-chemical properties were also examined to determine if a positive feedback exists between nutrient availability and K. daigremontiana invasion. Overall,our results showed that C mineralization and transformation of organic compounds to NH_4^+ were favored at sites colonized by K.daigremontiana. With this species, we found the highest cumulative amounts of NH_4^+-N and C and the lowest mineralization time.These results could be explained by higher activities of urease and glucosaminidase in soils under the influence of K. daigremontiana.In addition, higher amounts of organic matter and moisture content in invaded soils might favor C and N mineralization. In conclusion,invasion of Neotropical semiarid zones by K. daigremontiana may influence the chemical and biological properties of the soils covered by this species, increasing nutrient bioavailability, which, in time, can facilitate the invasion process. | Ileana HERRERA Jose R.
