1Antiglycation,antioxidant and toxicological potential of polyphenol extracts of alligator pepper,ginger and nutmeg from Nigeria显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antioxidant and antiglycation potential of polyphenols from three spices;alligator pepper,ginger and nutmeg.Methods:Polyphenol extracts of these spices were subjected to brine-shrimp lethality assay,phyloloxicily test,DPPH and superoxide anion radical scavenging as well as BSA-glucose antiglycation assay.Results:Results obtained showed that polyphenol extract of ginger has the highest anlioxidant potential with IC_(50)0.075 and 0.070 mg/mL.for DPPH and superoxide anion radical scavenging assay while alligator pepper displayed highest antiglycation activity with IC_(50)0.125 mg/mL.However,nutmeg extract exhibited weakest cytotoxic and phytotoxic potential with LD_(50)4359.70 and 1490μg/mL respectively.Conclusions:It can be concluded that the polyphenol extracts of alligator pepper,ginger and nutmeg displayed good antioxidant as well as antiglycation potential and are,safe for consumption.Kazeem MI Akanji MA Hafizur Rahman M Choudhary MI 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,9:7
2Phytochemical screening and in vitro bioactivities of the extracts of aerial part of Boerhavia diffusa Linn.显示文摘Objective:To investigate the bioactivities of crude n-hexane,ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of aerial part of Boerhavia diffusa Linn.(B.diffusa) and its phytochemical analysis.Methods: the identification of phyloconstituents and assay of antioxidant,thrombolytic,cytotoxic, antimicrobial activities were conducted using specific standard in vitro procedures.Results:The results showed that the plant extracts were a rich source of phytoconstituents.Methanol extract showed higher antioxidant,thrombolytic activity and less cytotoxic activity than those of n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of A diffusa.Among the bioactivities,antioxidant activity was the most notable compared to the positive control and thus could be a potential rich source of natural antioxidant.In case of antimicrobial screening,crude extracts of the plant showed remarkable antibacterial activity against tested microorganisms.All the extracts showed significant inhibitory activity against Candida albicuns,at a concentration of 1000 μg/disc.Conclusions:The present findings suggest that,the plant widely available in Bangladesh,could be a prominent source of medicinally important natural compounds.Apurba Sarker Apu Mahmuda Sultana Liza A.T.M.Jamaluddin Md.Amran Howlader Repon Kumer Saha Farhana Rizwan Nishat Nasrin 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,9:1
3Morinda citrifolia L. (noni) and memantine attenuate periventricular tissue injury of the fourth ventricle in hydrocephalic rabbits显示文摘This study was designed to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of Morinda citrifolia L. (Rubiaceae), commonly known as noni, and memantine (a N-methy-D-aspartate receptor inhibitor) on hydrocephalus-induced neurodegenerative disorders. Kaolin was injected into the cistern magna of male adult New Zealand rabbits to establish a hydrocephalus animal model. Memantine (20 mg/kg, intraperitoneally; memantine-treated group) or noni (5 mL/kg, intragastrically; noni-treated group) was administered daily for 2 weeks. Microtubule-associated protein-2 and caspase-3 immunohistochemistry were performed to detect neuronal degeneration and apoptosis in the periventricular tissue of the fourth ventricle of rabbits. Microtubule-associated protein-2 staining density was significantly decreased in the hydrocephalic group, while the staining density was significantly increased in the memantine- and noni-treated groups, especially in the noni-treated group. Noni treatment decreased the number of caspase-3-positive cells in rabbits with hydrocephalus, while memantine had no effect.
