1Changing paradigms in lower extremity reconstruction in war-related injuries显示文摘Background: Ballistic high-energy trauma has substantially increased the severity of non-fatal extremity injuries incurred in modern warfare. Expedient medical care, refinement in surgical techniques, and soft tissue coverage have brought about a paradigm shift in the management of lower extremity wounds during the last decade with an increased emphasis on limb salvage.Methods: A literature-based study was conducted to analyze reconstructive modalities based on the location, depth, and severity of wounds, as well as mechanism of injury, concomitant vascular injuries and open fractures, choice of flap, timing of definitive reconstruction, and complications.Results: Extremity injuries account for over 60% of injuries in the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, with the majority secondary to explosive devices. The severity of these injuries is profound compared with civilian registries, and conventional injury scoring systems have failed to accurately predict outcomes in combat trauma. The mainstay of treatment is serial debridement, negative pressure therapy, fracture stabilization, and treatment of concomitant injuries by the forward medical teams with subsequent definitive reconstruction after transport to an advanced military treatment facility. Autologous reconstruction with free tissue transfer and pedicled flaps remains the primary modality for soft tissue coverage in limb salvage. Adjunct innovative modalities, such as external tissue expansion, dermal substitutes, and regenerative matrices, have also been successfully utilized for limb salvage.Conclusion: Lower extremity injuries account for the vast majority of injuries in modern warzones. Explosive devices represent the most common mechanism of injury, with blast impact leading to extensive soft tissue injuries necessitating complex reconstructive strategies. 4Ignition and combustion of pyrotechnics at low pressures and at temperature extremes显示文摘Rapid and effective ignition of pyrotechnic countermeasure decoy flares is vitally important to the safety of expensive military platforms such as aircraft. Qineti Q is conducting experimental and theoretical research into pyrotechnic countermeasure decoy flares. A key part of this work is the development and application of improved models to increase the understanding of the ignition processes occurring for these flares. These models have been implemented in a two-dimensional computational model and details are described in this paper. Previous work has conducted experiments and validated the computational model at ambient temperature and pressure. More recently the computational model has been validated at pressures down to that equivalent to 40,000 feet but at ambient temperature(~290 K).This paper describes further experimental work in which the ignition delays of the priming material in inert countermeasure decoy flares were determined for pressures down to 40,000 feet and at temperature extremes of -40℃ and 100℃ Also included in this paper is a comparison of the measured and predicted ignition delays at low pressures and temperature extremes. 9High-Throughput UAV Image-Based Method Is More Precise Than Manual Rating of Herbicide Tolerance显示文摘The traditional visual rating system is labor-intensive,time-consuming,and prone to human error.Unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)imagery-based vegetation indices(VI)have potential applications in high-throughput plant phenotyping.The study objective is to determine if UAV imagery provides accurate and consistent estimations of crop injury from herbicide application and its potential as an alternative to visual ratings.The study was conducted at the Kernen Crop Research Farm,University of Saskatchewan in 2016 and 2017.Fababean(Vicia faba L.)crop tolerance to nine herbicide tank mixtures was evaluated with 2 rates distributed in a randomized complete block design(RCBD)with 4 blocks.The trial was imaged using a multispectral camera with a ground sample distance(GSD)of 1.2 cm,one week after the treatment application.Visual ratings of growth reduction and physiological chlorosis were recorded simultaneously with imaging.The optimized soil-adjusted vegetation index(OSAVI)was calculated from the thresholded orthomosaics.The UAV-based vegetation index(OSAVI)produced more precise results compared to visual ratings for both years.The coefficient of variation(CV)of OSAVI was~1%when compared to 18-43%for the visual ratings.Furthermore,Tukey’s honestly significance difference(HSD)test yielded a more precise mean separation for the UAV-based vegetation index than visual ratings.The significant correlations between OSAVI and the visual ratings from the study suggest that undesirable variability associated with visual assessments can be minimized with the UAVbased approach.UAV-based imagery methods had greater precision than the visual-based ratings for crop herbicide damage.These methods have the potential to replace visual ratings and aid in screening crops for herbicide tolerance.Hema S.N.Duddu Eric N.Johnson Christian J.Willenborg Steven J.Shirtliffe 2019Plant Phenomics2019,1,1:0
