1Climate Change’s Role in Disaster Risk Reduction’s Future:Beyond Vulnerability and Resilience显示文摘A seminal policy year for development and sustainability occurs in 2015 due to three parallel processes that seek long-term agreements for climate change, the Sustainable Development Goals, and disaster risk reduction.Little reason exists to separate them, since all three examine and aim to deal with many similar processes, including vulnerability and resilience. This article uses vulnerability and resilience to explore the intersections and overlaps amongst climate change, disaster risk reduction, and sustainability. Critiquing concepts such as 'return to normal'and 'double exposure'demonstrate how separating climate change from wider contexts is counterproductive. Climate change is one contributor to disaster risk and one creeping environmental change amongst many, and not necessarily the most prominent or fundamental contributor. Yet climate change has become politically important, yielding an opportunity to highlight and tackle the deep-rooted vulnerability processes that cause 'multiple exposure'to multiple threats. To enhance resilience processes that deal with the challenges, a prudent place for climate changewould be as a subset within disaster risk reduction. Climate change adaptation therefore becomes one of many processes within disaster risk reduction. In turn, disaster risk reduction should sit within development and sustainability to avoid isolation from topics wider than disaster risk. Integration of the topics in this way moves beyond expressions of vulnerability and resilience towards a vision of disaster risk reduction’s future that ends tribalism and separation in order to work together to achieve common goals for humanity.Ilan Kelman JC Gaillard Jessica Mercer 2015International Journal of Disaster Risk Science2015,6,1:19

5Animal models for studying hepatitis C and alcohol effects on liver显示文摘Chronic consumption of ethanol has a dramatic effect on the clinical outcome of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, but the mechanism linking these two pathologies is unknown. Presently, in vitro systems are limited in their ability to study the interaction between a productive wild-type HCV infection and chronic ethanol exposure. Mouse models are potentially very useful in dissecting elements of the HCV-ethanol relationship. Experiments in mice that transgenically express HCV proteins are outlined, as are experiments for the generation of mice with chimeric human livers. 6X-ray-induced radiophotodynamic therapy (RPDT) using lanthanide micelles: Beyond depth limitations显示文摘We report lanthanide-based micelles integrating hypericin (Hyp) for X-ray- triggered photodynamic therapy (PDT). The lanthanide luminescence induced by X-ray irradiation excites the photosensitizer, which leads to the generation of singlet oxygen. 11Three-dimensional impact kinetics with foot-strike manipulations during running显示文摘Background: Lack of an observable vertical impact peak in fore/mid-foot running has been suggested as a means of reducing lower extremity impact forces, although it is unclear if impact characteristics exist in other axes. The purpose of the investigation was to compare three-dimensional(3 D) impact kinetics among foot-strike conditions in over-ground running using instantaneous loading rate–time profiles.Methods: Impact characteristics were assessed by identifying peak loading rates in each direction(medial–lateral(ML), anterior–posterior(AP),vertical, and 3 D resultant) following foot-strike instructions(fore-foot, mid-foot, subtle heel, and obvious heel strike). Kinematic and kinetic data were analyzed among 9 male participants in each foot-strike condition.Results: Loading rate peaks were observed in each direction and foot-strike condition, differing in magnitude by direction(3 D resultant and vertical > AP > ML, p ≤ 0.031) and foot-strike: ML(fore-foot and mid-foot strike > obvious heel strike, p ≤ 0.032), AP(fore-foot and mid-foot strikes > subtle-heel and obvious heel strikes, p ≤ 0.023). In each direction, the first loading rate peak occurred later during heel strike running relative to fore-foot(p ≤ 0.019), with vertical and 3 D resultant impact durations exceeding shear(ML and AP, p ≤ 0.007) in each condition.Conclusion: Loading rate–time assessment identified contrasting impact characteristics in each direction and the 3 D resultant following foot-strike manipulations, with potential implications for lower extremity structures in running.Andrew D. 12A review of phosphorus nutrition in irrigated cotton farming systems of Australia显示文摘Australian cotton production predominantly occurs on Vertisols.The average lint yield of cotton grown in Australia is 2260–2700 kg·hm^(−2),which is 2.5 to 3 times the world average.This high productivity per unit of land area requires efficient use of resources such as water and nutrients.However,high yields accelerate the export of nutrients such as phosphorus(P)in seed,depleting the soil reserves of P more than in other countries with lower cotton yields.Recent surveys of cotton industry indicate that P application rates should match seed P export(30~40 kg·hm−2),but historical depletion within subsoil is still evident and is continuing.Depletion of soil P is typically more pronounced in the subsoil than in the topsoil(0~20 cm)where P fertiliser is applied,as cotton roots rely on these layers as important sources of plant available water and available P.This mismatch between zones of P uptake and resupply may increase stratification of available P in the soil profile.Recent studies showed that cotton responded poorly to banded applications of fertiliser P,while dispersal of fertiliser throughout the plant beds was more successful.Researchers have also observed sporadic cotton responses to applied P fertiliser in soils where available P concentrations were well above the previously determined critical concentrations indicative of fertiliser P responses in Australia.To sustain highyielding cotton production in Australia,a greater understanding of cotton root acquisition of applied P,as well as a re-examination of critical soil P concentrations for each production region are required.NACHIMUTHU Gunasekhar SCHWENKE Graeme MERCER Clarence BISCHOF Callum HULME Pat BELL Michael 2022Journal of Cotton Research2022,5,1:2
