1Differential mercury volatilization by tobacco organs expressing a modi-fied bacterial merA gene显示文摘Mercury pollution is a major environmental problem accompanying industrial activities. Most of the mercury released ends up and retained in the soil as complexes of the toxic ionic mercury (Hg2+), which then can be converted by microbes into the even more toxic methylmercury which tends to bioaccumulate. Mercury detoxification of the soil can also occur by microbes converting the ionic mercury into the least toxic metallic mercury (Hg0) form, which then evaporates. The remediation potentia1 of transgenic plants carrying the MerA gene from E. coLi encoding mercuric ion reductase could be evaluated. A modified version of the gene, optimized for plant codon preferences (merApe9, Rugh et al. 1996), was introduced into tobacco by Agrobacterium-mediated leaf disk transformation. Transgenic seeds were resistant to HgCl2 at 50 μM and some of them (10-20% ) could germinate on media containing as much as 350 μM HgCl2, while the control plants were fully inhibited or died on 50 μM HgCl2. The rate of elemental mercury evolution from Hg2+ (added as HgCl2) was 5-8 times higher for transgenic plants than the control. Mercury volatilization by isolated organs standardized for fresh weight was higher (up to 5 times) in the roots than in shoots or the leaves. The data suggest that it is the root system of the transgenic plants that volatilizes most of the reduced mercury (Hg0). It also suggests that much of the mercury need not enter the vascular system to be transported to the leaves for volatilization. 2Cysteine proteases as therapeutic targets:does selectivity matter? 6Cardiac damage in athlete's heart: When the “supernormal” heart fails!显示文摘Intense exercise may cause heart remodeling to compensate increases in blood pressure or volume by increasing muscle mass. Cardiac changes do not involve only the left ventricle, but all heart chambers. Physiological cardiac modeling in athletes is associated with normal or enhanced cardiac function, but recent studies have documented decrements in left ventricular function during intense exercise and the release of cardiac markers of necrosis in athlete's blood of uncertain significance. Furthermore, cardiac remodeling may predispose athletes to heart disease and result in electrical remodeling, responsible for arrhythmias. Athlete's heart is a physiological condition and does not require a specific treatment. In some conditions, it is important to differentiate the physiological adaptations from pathological conditions, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic dysplasia of the right ventricle, and non-compaction myocardium, for the greater risk of sudden cardiac death of these conditions. 8Incremental value of thoracic ultrasound in intensive care units:Indications,uses,and applications显示文摘Emergency physicians are required to care for unstable patients with life-threatening conditions, and thus must make decisions that are both quick and precise about unclear clinical situations. There is increasing consensus in favor of using ultrasound as a real-time bedside clinical tool for clinicians in emergency settings alongside the irreplaceable use of historical and physical examinations. B-mode sonography is an old technology that was first proposed for medical applications more than 50 years ago. Its application in the diagnosis of thoracic diseases has always been considered limited, due to the presence of air in the lung and the presence of the bones of the thoracic cage, which prevent the progression of the ultrasound beam. However, the close relationship between air and water in the lungs causes a variety of artifacts on ultrasounds. At the bedside, thoracic ultrasound is based primarily on the analysis of these artifacts, with the aim of improving accuracy and safety in the diagnosis and therapy of the various varieties of pulmonary pathologic diseases which are predominantly 'water-rich' or 'air-rich'. 10Role and function of granin proteins in diabetes mellitus显示文摘The granin glycoprotein family consists of nine acidic proteins;chromogranin A(CgA),chromogranin B(CgB),and secretogranin II–VIII.They are produced by a wide range of neuronal,neuroendocrine,and endocrine cells throughout the human body.Their major intracellular function is to sort peptides and proteins into secretory granules,but their cleavage products also take part in the extracellular regulation of diverse biological processes.The contribution of granins to carbohydrate metabolism and diabetes mellitus is a recent research area.CgA is associated with glucose homeostasis and the progression of type 1 diabetes.WE-14,CgA10-19,and CgA43-52 are peptide derivates of CgA,and act as CD4+or CD8+autoantigens in type 1 diabetes,whereas pancreastatin(PST)and catestatin have regulatory effects in carbohydrate metabolism.Furthermore,PST is related to gestational and type 2 diabetes.CgB has a crucial role in physiological insulin secretion.Secretogranins II and III have angiogenic activity in diabetic retinopathy(DR),and are novel targets in recent DR studies.Ongoing studies are beginning to investigate the potential use of granin derivatives as drugs to treat diabetes based on the divergent relationships between granins and different types of diabetes.Zoltan Herold Marton Doleschall Aniko Somogyi 2021World Journal of Diabetes2021,12,7:2

14Karst Types and Their Karstification显示文摘Eighty-one karst types and their main characteristics are described in this study,including the conditions of their development,the main characteristics of their karstification and their characteristic features.The classification includes the karst types of the Earth,a concise description of each karst type and the possibilities of belonging to several types of various karst areas.The classification of types is hierarchical in terms of groups,subgroups,types and subtypes.Karst can be classified according to their momentary state(the group of static karst types)and to their development(group of dynamic karst types).The group of static karst types has the azonal and zonal subgroups.Azonal karst types may be situated under any climate.These karst types are categorized according to their geological characteristics(age of karstification,constituting rock,extent of coveredness,structure),their elevation,expansion,the morphology of their surface,hydrology and to the effects occurring on the karst.Taking the above mentioned factors into consideration,the author distinguishes various types and describes their characteristics.Zonal karst types are also described(tundra karst,temperate karst,subtropical karst,tropical karst),karst types that can be distinguished based on their geomorphic evolution are identified and their characteristics are presented.Marton Veress 2020Journal of Earth Science2020,31,3:2
