2PIV Experimental Investigation on the Flow in a Model of Closed Pump Sump显示文摘Vortices in the flow of a pump sump present an important problem in pump station operation. In the present study, the flow patterns in two model pump sumps with specially designed structures are analyzed using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The data is analyzed to reveal a number of parameters including the internal flow field with velocity distribution, the streamline distribution, and the turbulent kinetic energy. 7Plant studies in the first Himalayan Biosphere Reserve: a review显示文摘Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve(NDBR) was declared as the first Himalayan Biosphere Reserve owing to its unique biological and cultural wealth. Its core zones, Nanda Devi National Park and Valley of Flowers National Park, are a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. In spite of lying at a high altitude, interplay of factors such as unique geographical location, climate, topography and wide altitudinal variations have endowed NDBR with a rich and diverse flora. Proportionately high percentage of endemic and near endemic plants makes NDBR a very important protected area from conservation point of view. However, its floristic wealth is facing unprecedented threats in the form of climate change and growing anthropogenic pressure. Hence, a need was felt to assess the directionality, quality and sufficiency of past and ongoing research for the conservation of floral and ethnobotanical wealth of NDBR in the absence of any such previous attempt. Based on an extensive review of more than 150 plant studies on NDBR, this communication provides a detailed account of the current state of knowledge and information gaps on flora, vegetation ecology, rare, endangered, threatened(RET) and endemic plants and ethnobotany. Priority research areas and management measures are discussed for the conservation of its unique floral wealth. 9Origin and diversification of Indian Ceropegieae(Apocynaceae)and its possible relation to the Indian monsoon显示文摘The Indian subcontinent has experienced a major shift in climatic regime from a wet tropical regime to increased seasonal rainfall,since the late Miocene.This shift has been attributed to the intensification of monsoons,which led to opening up of dry habitats in humid forests and formation of deciduous forests.We explored the role of this climatic shift in the origin and diversification of dry-adapted plant genera Ceropegia and Brachystelma(Ceropegiae,Asclepiadoideae,Apocynaceae).We sampled Ceropegia and Brachystelma from across India and used five markers(two nuclear and three plastid regions)to reconstruct a global phylogeny of this group.Indian members of the tribe Ceropegiae were derived from Africa through at least four independent dispersal events.All dispersal events occurred in late Miocene after establishment of a monsoon climate.One of these early dispersing lineages underwent rapid radiation in peninsular India,giving rise to around 50 species.Thus,both dispersal and diversification events coincided with the intensification of monsoons and concomitant aridification.The role of environment in the evolution of floral characteristics and root type in the Indian radiation is also discussed.This is one of the first reports on a dry-adapted endemic radiati on of plants in India.Siddharthan Surveswaran Sharad S.Kambale Mansa Srivastav Sachin A.Punekar Shrirang R.Yadav K.Praveen Karanth 2021Journal of Systematics and Evolution2021,59,1:0
10Spatially explicit estimation of soil organic carbon stock of an estuarine mangrove wetland of eastern India using elemental analysis and very-fine resolution satellite data显示文摘Background:This study estimated the total soil organic C(SOC)stock of the wetland influence zone of Bichitrapur mangroves in eastern India in a spatially explicit manner.Both spatial and vertical distribution of SOC densities with respect to land use/land cover(LULC)pattern were assessed.Subsequently,some site-specific management strate-gies were forwarded towards enhancement of C sequestration potential.Methods:The changing patterns of LULC within the wetland influence zone of the site were analyzed using Landsat TM(30 m)and Pleiades-1A(2 m)imageries from 1988 to 2018.Point-specific SOC measurement was done using samples taken from four core-depth intervals(viz.D1:0–20 cm,D2:20–40 cm,D3:40–70 cm,D4:70–100 cm)at 89 locations belonging to different LULC categories.Spatial interpolation was applied on this point-based data to produce SOC density and stock models as a whole and at all core-depths.Relationships between SOC density,core-depth and present LULC were evaluated through multivariate statistical analyses.Results:The LULC transformations during last three decades suggested the gradual growth of mangrove plantations as well as agricultural and aquacultural activities.Most amount of SOC was concentrated in D1(37.17%)followed by D3(26.51%),while D4 had the lowest(10.87%).The highest mean SOC density was observed in the dense mangrove patches(248.92 Mg ha^(−1))and the lowest mean was in the Casuarina plantations(2.78 Mg ha^(−1)).Here,Spline method emerged as the best-fit interpolation technique to model SOC data(R^(2)=0.74)and estimated total SOC stock of the entire wetland influence zone as 169,569.40 Mg and the grand mean as 125.56 Mg ha^(−1).Overall,LULC was inferred as a major determinant of SOC dynamics with a statistically significant effect(p<0.001),whereas no such inference could be drawn for soil core-depth.Conclusions:The C sequestration potential of sites such as the present one could be increased with appropriate zone-wise plantation strategies,restriction on the land conversion to aquaculture and promotion of ecotourism.Peri-odic monitoring through integration of geospatial techniques and elemental analyses would be immensely beneficial in this regard.Debajit Datta Madhumita Bairagi Mansa Dey Argha Pratim Pal Jibananda Gayen 2022Ecological Processes2022,11,1:0
