| 3 | Carcinogenic potential of duodenal reflux juice from patients with long-standing postgastrectomy显示文摘AIM To determine, whether study on thecarcinogenic potential of reflux juice frompatients with remote gastrectomy could clarifythe inherent relationship between duodenalreflux and gastric stump cancer.METHODS A total of 37 reflux juice samples(13 Billroth T, 24 Billroth Ⅱ ) were employed inthe present study. A two- stage transformationassay using BALB/c 3T3 cells was carried out totest the initiating or promoting activity of thesesamples.RESULTS Two of 18 (11.1%) reflux samplesexerted initiating activities, whereas 9/19(47.4%) samples enhanced the MNNG-initiafingcell transformation, suggesting the duodenalreflux juice might more frequently possess thetumor-promoter activity (P = 0. 029). In addition,there was no difference in initiating activities ofthe samples irrespective of surgical procedures(P=0.488), while Billroth Ⅱ samples exhibitedstronger tumor-promoter activity than Billroth Ⅰsamples (P = 0.027). Furthermore, the promoteractivities were well correlated with thehistological changes of the stomas (rs = 0.625,P = 0.004), but neither their cytotoxicities norinitiating activities had this correlation( Probabilities were 0.523 and 0.085,respectively).CONCLUSION The duodenal reflux juice frompatients with remote postgastrectomy did havecarcinogenic potential, and suggested thattumor-promoting activity should principallyaccount for the high incidence of gastric cancerin gastrectomy patients. | 8 | The study of two-color excitation upconversion of Pr(0.5)Yb(3):ZBLAN显示文摘The excited state absorption upconversion of Pr(0.5)Yb(3):ZBLAN glass material, under two-color excitation of the 960 nm semiconductor laser and the Xe lamp light simultaneously, is reported in this article. It was found that the upconversion emission spectra of 480.1, 519.0, 601.9 and 631.8 nm coincide with the common emission spectra. Meanwhile, the upconversion-excitation spectrum has three obvious peaks under two-color excitation, and they respectively correspond to the 856.0 nm upconversion ex-citation transition [1G4(Pr3+)→1I6(Pr3+) and 1G4(Pr3+)→3P1(Pr3+)], the 789.0 nm upconver-sion excitation transition 1G4(Pr3+)→3P2(Pr3+), and the 803.7 nm upconversion excitation transition 3H6(Pr3+)→1D2(Pr3+). The upconversion excitation transition 1G4(Pr3+)→1I6(Pr3+) is strong because its oscillator strength f = 23.040×10?6 is large, which results in a large peak appearing in the upconversion excitation spectrum. | 11 | Modelling and thermodynamic properties of pure CO_(2)and fue gas sorption data on South African coals using Langmuir,Freundlich,Temkin,and extended Langmuir isotherm models显示文摘Carbon sequestration in unmineable coal seams has been proposed as one of the most attractive technologies to mitigate carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emissions in which CO_(2)is stored in the microporous structure of the coal matrix in an adsorbed state.The CO_(2)adsorption process is hence considered one of the more efective methodologies in environmental sciences.Thus,adsorption isotherm measurements and modelling are key important scientifc measures required in understanding the adsorption system,mechanism,and process optimization in coalbeds.In this paper,three renowned and reliable adsorption isotherm models were employed including Langmuir,Freundlich,and Temkin for pure CO_(2)adsorption data,and the extended-Langmuir model for multicomponent,such as fue gas mixture-adsorption data as investigated in this research work.Also,signifcant thermodynamics properties including the standard enthalpy change(ΔH°),entropy change(ΔS°),and Gibbs free energy(ΔG°)were assessed using the van’t Hof equation.The statistical evaluation of the goodness-of-ft was done using three(3)statistical data analysis methods including correlation coefcient(R^(2)),standard deviation(σ),and standard error(SE).The Langmuir isotherm model accurately represent the pure CO_(2)adsorption on the coals than Freundlich and Temkin.The extended Langmuir gives best experimental data ft for the fue gas.The thermodynamic evaluations revealed that CO_(2)adsorption on the South African coals is feasible,spontaneous,and exothermic;and the adsorption mechanism is a combined physical and chemical interaction between the adsorbate and the adsorbent. | Major Mabuza Kasturie Premlall Michael O.Daramola | 2022 | International Journal of Coal Science & Technology2022,9,3: | 3 |
| 12 | Regulation of gene expression in chickens by heat stress显示文摘High ambient temperatures are a critical challenge in the poultry industry which is a key producer of the animal-based food.To evaluate heat stress levels,various parameters have been used,including growth rates,blood metabolites,and hormones.The most recent advances have explored expression profiling of genes that may play vital roles under stress.A high ambient temperature adversely affects nutrient uptake and is known to modulate the expression of genes encoding for sodium-dependent glucose transporters,glucose transporters,excitatory amino acid transporters,and fatty acidbinding proteins which are responsible for the absorption of macronutrients in the intestine.Various defensive activities are stimulated to protect the cell of different tissues from the heat-generated stress,including expression of early stress response genes coding for heat shock protein(HSP),c-FOS like protein,brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),and neuronal nitric oxide synthase(nNOS);antioxidant enzyme genes such as superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT),and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase(NOX4);and immune-related genes such as cytokines and toll-like receptors(TLRs).The potential role of HSPs in protecting the cell from stress and their presence in several tissues make them suitable markers to be evaluated under heat stress.BDNF and c-FOS genes expressed in the hypothalamus help cells to adapt to an adverse environment.Heat causes damage to the cell by generating reactive oxygen species(ROS).The NOX4 gene is the inducer of ROS under heat stress,which is in turns controlled by antioxidant enzymes such as SOD and CAT.TLRs are responsible for protecting against pathogenic attacks arising from enhanced membrane permeability,and cytokines help in controlling the pathogen and maintaining homeostasis.Thus,the evaluation of nutrient transporters and defense mechanisms using the latest molecular biology tools has made it possible to shed light on the complex cellular mechanism of heat-stressed chickens.As the impacts of heat stress on the above-mentioned aspects are beyond the extent to which the reduced growth performance could be explained,heat stress has more specific effects on the regulation of these genes than previously thought. | Akshat Goel Chris Major Ncho Yang-Ho Choi | 2021 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2021,12,2: | 2 |
