Immobilization of Lead and Cadmium in Contaminated Soil Using Amendments: A Review显示文摘Since the inception of industrial revolution, metal refining plants using pyrometallurgical processes have generated the prodigious emissions of lead(Pb) and cadmium(Cd). As the core target of such pollutants, a large number of soils are nowadays contaminated over widespread areas, posing a great threat to public health worldwide. Unlike organic pollutants, Pb and Cd do not undergo chemical or microbial breakdown and stay likely in site for longer duration after their release. Immobilization is an in-situ remediation technique that uses cost-effective soil amendments to reduce Pb and Cd availability in the contaminated soils. The Pb and Cd contamination in the soil environment is reviewed with focus on source enrichment, speciation and associated health risks, and immobilization options using various soil amendments. Commonly applied and emerging cost-effective soil amendments for Pb and Cd immobilization include phosphate compounds, liming, animal manure, biosolids, metal oxides, and biochar. These immobilizing agents could reduce the transfer of metal pollutants or residues to food web(plant uptake and leaching to subsurface water) and their long-term sustainability in heavy metal fixation needs further assessment.Amanullah MAHAR WANG Ping LI Ronghua ZHANG Zengqiang 2015Pedosphere2015,25,4:56
Combined alkaline and ultrasonic pretreatment of sludge before aerobic digestion显示文摘Alkaline and ultrasonic sludge disintegration can be used as the pretreatment of waste activated sludge(WAS) to promote the subsequent anaerobic or aerobic digestion. In this study, different combinations of these two methods were investigated. The evaluation was based on the quantity of soluble chemical oxygen demand(SCOD) in the pretreated sludge as well as the degradation of organic matter in the subsequent aerobic digestion. For WAS samples with combined pretreatment, the released COD levels were higher than those with ultrasonic or alkaline pretreatment alone. When combined with the ultrasonic treatment,NaOH treatment was more effcient than Ca(OH)2 for WAS solubilization. The COD levels released in various sequential options of combined NaOH and ultrasonic treatments were in the the following descending order:simultaneous treatment > NaOH treatment followed by ultrasonic treatment > ultrasonic treatment followed by NaOH treatment. For simultaneous treatment, low NaOH dosage(100 g/kg dry solid),short duration(30 min) of NaOH treatment, and low ultrasonic specific energy(7500 kJ/kg dry solid) were suitable for sludge disintegration.Using combined NaOH and ultrasonic pretreatment with optimal parameters, the degradation effciency of organic matter was increased from 38.0% to 50.7%,which is much higher than that with ultrasonic(42.5%) or with NaOH pretreatment(43.5%) in the subsequent aerobic digestion at the same retention time.MAHAR Rasool Bux 2009Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,3:40
Use of Biochar as an Amendment for Remediation of Heavy Metal-Contaminated Soils:Prospects and Challenges显示文摘Biochar(BC), known as the new black gold, is a stable, novel carbonaceous by-product that is synthesized through pyrolysis of biological materials in the absence of O_2.Recently, an emerging interest in the application of BC as a robust soil amendment has given rise to a broad research area in science and technology. It is considered a promising remediation option for heavy metal(HM)-contaminated soils to reduce HM bioavailability to plants.Remediation efficacy of BC depends on the porosity, composition, pyrolysis temperature, feedstock, and residence time of pyrolysis. This review article aimed to present an overview of BC use in the immobilization of HMs, i.e., Cd, As, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Sb, in contaminated soils. The remaining uncertain factors, including the specific soil HM immobilization mechanisms, long-term beneficial effects, and potential environmental risks associated with BC application are analyzed.Future research must be conducted to ensure that the management of environmental pollution is in accord with ecological sustainability and adaptation of the black gold biotechnology on a commercial basis for immobilization of HMs in contaminated soils.Altaf Hussain LAHORI GUO Zhanyu ZHANG Zengqiang LI Ronghua Amanullah MAHAR Mukesh Kumar AWASTHI SHEN Feng Tanveer Ali SIAL Farhana KUMBHAR WANG Ping JIANG Shuncheng 2017Pedosphere2017,27,6:28

Mycoremediation of Potentially Toxic Trace Elements--a Biological Tool for Soil Cleanup:A Review显示文摘Anthropogenic and geogenic activities release potentially toxic trace elements(PTEs) that impact human health and the environment. Increasing environmental pollution stresses the need for environmentally friendly remediation technologies. Physico-chemical treatments are effective, but are costly and generate secondary pollution on-or off-site. Phytoremediation is a biological treatment that provides positive results for PTE eradication with few limitations. Mycoremediation, a type of bioremediation to use macrofungi(mushrooms) for PTE extraction from polluted sites, is the best option for soil cleanup. This review highlights the scope, mechanisms, and potentials of mycoremediation. Mushrooms produce a variety of extracellular enzymes that degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs), pesticides, dyes, and petroleum hydrocarbons into simpler compounds. Cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb), mercury(Hg), chromium(Cr), copper(Cu), zinc(Zn), and iron(Fe) have been effectively extracted by Phellinus badius, Amanita spissa, Lactarius piperatus, Suillus grevillei, Agaricus bisporous, Tricholoma terreum, and Fomes fomentarius, respectively. Mycoremediation is affected by environmental and genetic factors, such as p H, substrate, mycelium age, enzyme type, and ecology. The bioaccumulation factor(BAF) can make clear the effectiveness of a mushroom for the extraction of PTEs from the substrate. Higher BAF values of Cd(4.34), Pb(2.75), Cu(9), and Hg(95) have been reported for Amanita muscaria, Hypholoma fasciculare, Russula foetens, and Boletus pinophilus, respectively, demonstrating their effectiveness and suitability for mycoremediation of PTEs.Amjad ALI GUO Di Amanullah MAHAR WANG Ping SHEN Feng LI Ronghua ZHANG Zengqiang 2017Pedosphere2017,27,2:2
Advances in reduction of NO_x and N_2O emission formation in an oxy-fired fluidized bed boiler显示文摘Fossil fuel combustion is one of the major means to meet the mounting global energy demand. However, the increasing NO_x and N_2 O emissions arising from fossil fuel combustion process have hazardous effects. Thus, mitigating these gases is vital to attain a sustainable environment. Interestingly, oxy-fuel combustion in fluidized bed for carbon capture and minimized NO_x emissions is strongly sustainable compare to the other approaches. It was assessed that NO_x formation and fuel-N conversion have significant limitation under oxy-fluidized bed compared to air mode and the mechanism of NO_x formation is still deficient and requires further development. In addition, this review paper discussed the potential of primary measure as low emission process with others supplementary techniques for feasible NO_x reduction. The influences of combustion mode, operating parameters, and reduction techniques such as flue gas recirculation, oxygen staging, biomass co-firing, catalyst, influence of fluidized bed design and structure, decoupling combustion and their merges are respectively evaluated. Findings show that significant minimization of NO_x emission can be achieved through combination of primary and secondary reduction techniques.Khalid El Sheikh Mohammad Jakir Hossain Khan Mahar Diana Hamid Siddhartha Shrestha Brahim Si Ali G.A.Ryabov Lya A.Dolgushin Mohd Azlan Hussain Tatiana V.Bukharkina Elena A.Gorelova 2019Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2019,27,2:2

Pathogenicity of bacterium, Xenorhabdus nematophila isolated from entomopathogenic nematode (Steinernema carpocapsae) and its secretion against Galleria mellonella larvae显示文摘The entomopathogenic bacterium, Xenorhabdus nematophila was isolated from the hemolymph of Galleria mel- lonella infected with Steinernema carpocapsae. The bacterial cells and its metabolic secretions have been found lethal to the Galleria larvae. Toxic secretion in broth caused 95% mortality within 4 d of application whereas the bacterial cells caused 93% mortality after 6 d. When filter and sand substrates were compared, the later one was observed as appropriate. Similarly, bacterial cells and secretion in broth were more effective at 14% moisture and 25 °C temperature treatments. Maximum insect mortality (100%) was observed when bacterial concentration of 4×106 cells/ml was used. Similarly, maximum bacterial cells in broth (95%) were penetrated into the insect body within 2 h of their application. However, when stored bacterial toxic secretion was applied to the insects its efficacy declined. On the other hand, when the same toxic secretion was dried and then dissolved either in broth or water was proved to be effective. The present study showed that the bacterium, X. nematophila or its toxic secretion can be used as an important component of integrated pest management against Galleria.MAHAR Ali Nawaz MUNIR Muhammad ELAWAD Sami GOWEN Simon Richard HAGUE Nigel Graham Meckenzi 2005Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2005,6,6:2
