Biochar-based bioenergy and its environmental impact in Northwestern Ontario Canada: A review显示文摘Biochar is normally produced as a by-product of bioenergy. However, if biochar is produced as a co-product with bioenergy from sustainably managed forests and used for soil amendment, it could provide a carbon neutral or even carbon negative solution for current environmental degradation problems. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of biochar production as a co-product of bioenergy and its implications. We focus on biochar production with reference to biomass availability and sustainability and on biochar utilization for its soil amendment and greenhouse gas emissions reduction properties. Past studies confirm that northwestern Ontario has a sustainable and sufficient supply of biomass feedstock that can be used to produce bioenergy, with biochar as a co-product that can replace fossil fuel consumption, increase soil productivity and sequester carbon in the long run. For the next step, we recommend that comprehensive life cycle assessment of biochar-based bioenergy production, from raw material collection to biochar application, with an extensive economic assessment is necessary for making this technology commercially viable in northwestern Ontario.Krish Homagain Chander Shahi Nancy Luckai Mahadev Sharma 2014Journal of Forestry Research2014,25,4:5
CRISPR-Mediated Engineering across the Central Dogma in Plant Biology for Basic Research and Crop Improvement显示文摘The central dogma(CD)of molecular biology is the transfer of genetic information from DNA to RNA to protein.Major CD processes governing genetic flow include the cell cycle,DNA replication, chromosome packaging, epigenetic changes, transcription, posttranscriptional alterations, translation, and posttranslational modifications. The CD processes are tightly regulated in plants to maintain genetic integrity throughout the life cycle and to pass genetic materials to next generation.Engineering of various CD processes involved in gene regulation will accelerate crop improvement to feed the growing world population.CRISPR technology enables programmable editing of CD processes to alter DNA,RNA,or protein, which would have been impossible in the past. Here,an overview of recent advancements in CRISPR tool development and CRISPR-based CD modulations that expedite basic and applied plant research is provided.Furthermore,CRISPR applications in major thriving areas of research, such as gene discovery(allele mining and cryptic gene activation),introgression(de novo domestication and haploid induction),and application of desired traits beneficial to farmers or consumers(biotic/abiotic stress-resilient crops, plant cell factories, and delayed senescence),are described. Finally, the global regulatory policies, challenges, and prospects for CRISPR-mediated crop improvement are discussed.Dibyajyoti Pramanik Rahul Mahadev Shelake Mi Jung Kim Jae-Yean Kim 2021Molecular Plant2021,14,1:2
Life cycle environmental impact assessment of biochar-based bioenergy production and utilization in Northwestern Ontario,Canada显示文摘Biochar-based bioenergy production and subsequent land application of biochar can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by fixing atmospheric carbon into the soil for a long period of time. A thorough life cycle assessment of biochar-based bioenergy production and biochar land application in Northwestern Ontario is conducted using Sima Pro Ver. 8.1. The results of energy consumption and potential environmental impact of biochar-based bioenergy production system are compared with those of conventional coal-based system. Results show that biochar land application consumes 4847.61 MJ per tonne dry feedstock more energy than conventional system, but reduces the GHG emissions by 68.19 kg CO2e per tonne of dry feedstock in its life cycle. Biochar land application improves ecosystem quality by 18 %, reduces climate change by15 %, and resource use by 13 % but may adversely impact on human health by increasing disability adjusted life years by 1.7 % if biomass availability is low to medium.Replacing fossil fuel with woody biomass has a positive impact on the environment, as one tonne of dry biomass feedstock when converted to biochar reduces up to 38 kg CO2e with biochar land application despite using more energy. These results will help understand a comprehensive picture of the new interventions in forestry businesses, which are promoting biochar-based bioenergy production.Krish Homagain Chander Shahi Nancy Luckai Mahadev Sharma 2015Journal of Forestry Research2015,26,4:2

SARS-COV-2 infection(coronavirus disease 2019)for the gastrointestinal consultant显示文摘The current pandemic due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has caused an extreme burden for health care systems globally, and the number of cases is expected to continue to increase,at least in the immediate future. The virus is estimated to have infected more than 1.5 million individuals. The available reports suggest that gastrointestinal(GI)involvement in coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is common and in some cases the GI symptoms may precede the respiratory symptoms. In addition to direct effects of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2,the infected patients remain at risk for the complications commonly managed by gastroenterology and hepatology consultants. The most commonly reported GI manifestation of COVID-19 is diarrhea, which is reported in a third to up to more than half of the patients.Mild to moderate elevation of the liver enzymes are also common, although no case of acute liver failure has been reported so far. Many of the medications used for treatment of COVID-19 can also be associated with GI symptoms or liver injury and can be included in the differential diagnosis in these patients.Although the diagnosis of the infection is currently based on RNA analysis in respiratory samples, the available literature on fecal shedding of this virus suggests that fecal RNA testing might prove to be a useful diagnostic test.It is reasonable to delay all non-urgent endoscopic procedures during the peak of the pandemic and use additional protective equipment such as N95 respirators during endoscopy while most patients can be considered high risk for having been exposed to the virus.Kaveh Hajifathalian Srihari Mahadev Robert E Schwartz Shawn Shah Kartik Sampath Felice Schnoll-Sussman Robert S Brown Jr David Carr-Locke David E Cohen Reem Z Sharaiha 2020World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,14:2
Prediction modelling in the early detection of neonatal sepsis显示文摘Background Prediction modelling can greatly assist the health-care professionals in the management of diseases, thus sparking interest in neonatal sepsis diagnosis. The main objective of the study was to provide a complete picture of performance of prediction models for early detection of neonatal sepsis. Methods PubMed,Scopus,CINAHL databases were searched and articles which used various prediction modelling measures for the early detection of neonatal sepsis were comprehended.Data extraction was carried out based on Critical Appraisal and Data Extraction for Systematic Reviews of Prediction Modelling Studies checklist.Extricate data consisted of objective, study design, patient characteristics, type of statistical model, predictors, outcome, sample size and location.Prediction model Risk of Bias Assessment Tool was applied to gauge the risk of bias of the articles. Results An aggregate of ten studies were included in the review among which eight studies had applied logistic regression to build a prediction model, while the remaining two had applied artificial intelligence.Potential predictors like neonatal fever, birth weight, foetal morbidity and gender, cervicovaginitis and maternal age were identified for the early detection of neonatal sepsis. Moreover, birth weight, endotracheal intubation, thyroid hypofunction and umbilical venous catheter were promising factors for predicting late-onset sepsis;while gestational age, intrapartum temperature and antibiotics treatment were utilised as budding prognosticators for early-onset sepsis detection. Conclusion Prediction modelling approaches were able to recognise promising maternal, neonatal and laboratory predictors in the rapid detection of early and late neonatal sepsis and thus, can be considered as a novel way for clinician decisionmaking towards the disease diagnosis if not used alone,in the years to come.Puspita Sahu Elstin Anbu Raj Stanly Leslie Edward Simon Lewis Krishnananda Prabhu Mahadev Rao Vijayanarayana Kunhikatta 2022World Journal of Pediatrics2022,18,3:2
