4Acute changes in ganglion cell layer thickness in ischemic optic neuropathy compared to optic neuritis using optical coherence tomography显示文摘AIM:To elucidate the changes of different ganglion cell layer(GCL)thinning patterns between the optic neuritis(ON)and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy(NAION).METHODS:A prospective,observational study was conducted to evaluate the timing of GCL changes between acute ON and NAION using optical coherence tomography.RESULTS:Thinning on optical coherence tomography in the NAION group occurs as early as 11 d after symptomatic onset of vision loss and follows an altitudinal pattern.The mean superior-inferior GCL thickness difference in the NAION cohort was clinically significant at 5.7μm in the NAION cohort compared to controls of 0.8μm(P=0.032),but not significant in the ON group compared to controls with both groups measuring 1.1μm.Global thinning was significant for the ON group compared to controls at 7.2μm(P=0.011)but not the NAION group compared to controls at 1.35μm.CONCLUSION:These findings suggest that future treatments for NAION should be given early,and possibly before 11 d in order to prevent GCL and irreversible vision loss.Peter W.MacIntosh S.Vijay Kumar V.R.Saravanan Virna M.Shah 2020International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2020,13,1:1

7Male infertility:A scoping review of prevalence,causes and treatments显示文摘Male factor infertility has now become a major health disorder,affecting human reproduction and developing worldwide as a serious medical and social issue.It causes trauma,emotional instability,and mental stress in the affected couples.In nearly half of the analyzed cases,male-associated factors are the major contributors.The present review outlines a wide range of factors responsible for male infertility.We performed an in-depth literature review of the global index of infertility by using data from World Health Organization’s website,Elsevier’s,PubMed and Scopus databases as well as journals.The quality and quantity of semen,male hormonal imbalance,genetic deterioration,and reactive oxygen species are the fundamental causes of male factor infertility.In addition,air quality,water quality,noise pollution,lifestyle changes,improper diet consumption,malnutrition,exposure to chemicals and toxins,smoking habits,drug abuses,major diseases,and medications are also contributors to infertility issues that can temporarily or permanently influence male reproductive system.We also reviewed the prevalence of male infertility in different countries.Kirati M.Shah Kanan G.Gamit Manan A.Raval Niraj Y.Vyas 2021Asian pacific Journal of Reproduction2021,10,5:0
8Energy-Efficient Low-Complexity Algorithm in 5G Massive MIMO Systems显示文摘Energy efficiency(EE)is a critical design when taking into account circuit power consumption(CPC)in fifth-generation cellular networks.These problems arise because of the increasing number of antennas in massive multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO)systems,attributable to inter-cell interference for channel state information.Apart from that,a higher number of radio frequency(RF)chains at the base station and active users consume more power due to the processing activities in digital-to-analogue converters and power amplifiers.Therefore,antenna selection,user selection,optimal transmission power,and pilot reuse power are important aspects in improving energy efficiency in massive MIMO systems.This work aims to investigate joint antenna selection,optimal transmit power and joint user selection based on deriving the closed-form of the maximal EE,with complete knowledge of large-scale fading with maximum ratio transmission.It also accounts for channel estimation and eliminating pilot contamination as antennas M→∞.This formulates the optimization problem of joint optimal antenna selection,transmits power allocation and joint user selection to mitigate inter-cellinterference in downlink multi-cell massive MIMO systems under minimized reuse of pilot sequences based on a novel iterative low-complexity algorithm(LCA)for Newton’s methods and Lagrange multipliers.To analyze the precise power consumption,a novel power consumption scheme is proposed for each individual antenna,based on the transmit power amplifier and CPC.Simulation results demonstrate that the maximal EE was achieved using the iterative LCA based on reasonable maximum transmit power,in the case the noise power is less than the received power pilot.The maximum EE was achieved with the desired maximum transmit power threshold by minimizing pilot reuse,in the case the transmit power allocationρd=40 dBm,and the optimal EE=71.232 Mb/j.Adeeb Salh Lukman Audah Qazwan Abdullah Nor Shahida M.Shah Shipun A.Hamzah Shahilah Nordin Nabil Farah 2021Computers, Materials & Continua2021,,6:0
9GPRC5B protects osteoarthritis by regulation of autophagy signaling显示文摘Osteoarthritis(OA)is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world.However,current treatment modalities mainly relieve pain and inhibit cartilage degradation,but do not promote cartilage regeneration.In this study,we show that G protein-coupled receptor class C group 5 member B(GPRC5B),an orphan G-protein-couple receptor,not only inhibits cartilage degradation,but also increases cartilage regeneration and thereby is protective against OA.We observed that Gprc5b deficient chondrocytes had an upregulation of cartilage catabolic gene expression,along with downregulation of anabolic genes in vitro.Furthermore,mice deficient in Gprc5b displayed a more severe OA phenotype in the destabilization of the medial meniscus(DMM)induced OA mouse model,with upregulation of cartilage catabolic factors and downregulation of anabolic factors,consistent with our in vitro findings.Overexpression of Gprc5b by lentiviral vectors alleviated the cartilage degeneration in DMM-induced OA mouse model by inhibiting cartilage degradation and promoting regeneration.We also assessed the molecular mechanisms downstream of Gprc5b that may mediate these observed effects and identify the role of protein kinase B(AKT)-mammalian target of rapamycin(m TOR)-autophagy signaling pathway.Thus,we demonstrate an integral role of GPRC5B in OA pathogenesis,and activation of GPRC5B has the potential in preventing the progression of OA.Liang He Ziwei Xu Xin Niu Rong Li Fanhua Wang Yu You Jingduo Gao Lei Zhao Karan M.Shah Jian Fan Mingyao Liu Jian Luo 2023Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2023,13,7:0
10Induction of resistance vessel dilation by ginger root juice,possibly through extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 and endothelial nitric oxide synthase activation in endothelial cells显示文摘Objective:To investigate the effects of ginger root juice on contractibility of resistance blood vessels from mice and on activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2(ERK1/2)and endothelial nitric oxide synthase(eNOS)in human endothelial cells.Methods:Juice was prepared from semi-dry ginger roots.Mesenteric artery rings were dis-sected from healthy adult C57BL/J6 mice.Primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HU-VECs)were isolated from umbilical cords of normal full-term babies.The contractibility of the dissected vessel rings in the presence or absence of ginger root juice at 0.1%(v/v)after potassium(100 mM KCL)stimulation was measured by wire myography.The phosphorylation levels of ERK1/2 and eNOS in the presence of ginger root juice in the culture medium at 0,0.025%,0.05%,0.1%,and 0.2%(v/v)in HUVECs were assessed by western blotting analysis.Results:An immediate sharp increase in the contractile activity was observed in mesenteric artery rings in response to KCL stimulation.Ginger root juice effectively attenuated the KCL-mediated vessel contraction.Moreover,ginger root juice significantly increased phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and eNOS in a dose-dependent manner.Conclusions:Ginger root juice is capable of relaxing resistance blood vessels.Activation of ERK1/2 and eNOS through phosphorylation in endothelial cells may be a mechanism underlying the vasodilator activity of ginger root.Elizabeth Bird Dinesh M.Shah 2013Family Medicine and Community Health2013,1,3:0
11Enhancing secrecy rates in a wiretap channel显示文摘Reliable communication imposes an upper limit on the achievable rate,namely the Shannon capacity.Wyner's wiretap coding ensures a security constraint and reliability,but results in a decrease of achievable rate.To mitigate the loss in secrecy rate,we propose a coding scheme in which we use sufficiently old messages as key and prove that multiple messages are secure with respect to all the information possessed by the eavesdropper.We also show that we can achieve security in the strong sense.Next,we study a fading wiretap channel with full channel state information of the eavesdropper's channel and use our coding/decoding scheme to achieve a secrecy capacity close to the Shannon capacity of the main channel(in the ergodic sense).Finally,we study a case where the transmitter does not have instantaneous information of the channel state of the eavesdropper,but only its distribution.Shahid M.Shah Vinod Sharma 2020Digital Communications and Networks2020,6,1:0
