| 1 | Soil carbon sequestration, carbon markets, and conservation agriculture practices:A hypothetical examination in Mozambique显示文摘Payments for Environmental Services(PES)are relatively novel mechanisms whereby the adoption of sustainable management practices by a stakeholder is rewarded by incentives linked to external markets.Adoption of PES for conservation agricultural practices(CAPS)by smallholder farmers may provide opportunities to increase household income or cover the technology costs of adoption if the carbon sequestration benefits of CAPS are quantifiable, adoption rates are accelerated and maintained,a mechanism exists whereby carbon sequestration services can be compensated, and carbon offset exchange markets are viable. This research suggests a methodology to examine a PES market for carbon offsets generated by the adoption of CAPS by farmers in Mozambique.Assuming a cumulative adoption of 60%over a 20-year period, revenue from PES market participation to CA adopters was two times higher than revenue earned when disadoption occurred midway through the simulation.Lower adoption targets are associated with higher per household returns when fertilizer rates typical to the region are increased.Establishing and maintaining a sustainable PES system in the study region would require significant investment in time and resources. The lack of on-the-ground institutions or local support for such a program would also challenge successful implementation. Finally, the programs where participant success depends on external markets, such as the hypothetical one suggested here, are subject to the ebb and flow of foreign demand for carbon offsets.Addressing these three broad constraints to a PES/CAPS program in the region would require grass-roots driven policy initiatives with buy-in at multiple social, economic, and political levels. | Timoteo E.Simone Dayton M.Lambert Ivan Cuvaca Neal S.Eash | 2017 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2017,5,3: | 1 |

| 4 | Swimrun race, athletes, safety and performance:A brief review显示文摘Swimrun was established in Sweden in 2006.In competition athletes alternate between running and swimming multiple times. It has grown from only being hosted in Sweden to now being a global sport. The swimrun race exposes athletes to environments that require a unique set of skills. For example, participants have to negotiate ocean currents and waves. The environmental conditions change between the runs and the swims.Athletes may be exposed to hot temperatures when running in wetsuits(25℃and hotter)and cold water(colder than 16℃)when swimming. This sudden change in environmental conditions imposes a poorly defined physiological stress on the participants.Research on the demands of swimrun is scarce.More research is needed to improve athlete safety during events. Also, research is needed to provide insight into enhancing training methods and performance. | C.H.Geromont M.Lambert A.N.Bosch | 2021 | Sports Medicine and Health Science2021,3,4: | 0 |
| 5 | The ecological validity of traditional standing and novel bicycle balance and agility tests for predicting performance in mountain bikers显示文摘Falls are a common mechanism of injury in mountain biking and may be related to a loss of control of the bicycle.Traditionally, the components of bicycle control(balance and agility)are measured in standing and running, which may not reflect the skills required in mountain biking. In this paper,we present the validity of both traditional standing and novel bicycle-specific balance tests in mountain bikers.Twenty-nine male and female participants completed indoor laboratory tests and an outdoor downhill trail.Participants completed single-leg stance balance,Y-balance test, one static and four dynamic bicycle-specific balance tests,a bicycle agility test, and an outdoor downhill trail.Single-leg stance balance and Y-balance tests with eyes open had poor validity when associated with bicycle control. The static(r=-0.57,p=0.001)and four dynamic bicycle balance tests(r=-0.51 to-0.78,p=0.005 to 0.0001),and the bicycle agility test(r=0.87,p<0.0001)had moderate to strong relationships with the outdoor downhill run.Single-leg stance balance and Y-balance tests with eyes open are not valid measures of performance on a mountain bike, and should not be used to assess these populations. Our novel bicycle balance tests have adequate validity to be used as measures of performance in mountain bikers. | K.Buchholtz M.Lambert T.L.Burgess | 2022 | Sports Medicine and Health Science2022,4,4: | 0 |
| 6 | Adélie penguins and temperature changes in Antarctica: a long-term view显示文摘During the summer months,Adélie penguins represent the dominant biomass of terrestrial Antarctica.Literally millions of individuals nest in ice-free areas around the coast of the continent.Hence, these modern populations of Adélie penguins have often been championed as an ideal biological indicator of ecological and environmental changes that we currently face.In addition,Adélie penguins show an extraordinary record of sub-fossil remains, dating back to the late Pleistocene. At this time, temperatures were much lower than now.Hence, this species offers unique long-term information,at both the genomic and ecological levels, about how a species has responded to climate change over more than 40000 years. | Craig D.MILLAR Sankar SUBRAMANIAN Tim H.HEUPINK Siva SWAMINATHAN Carlo BARONI David M.LAMBERT | 2012 | Integrative Zoology2012,7,2: | 0 |
