| 1 | Sodium butyrate attenuates high-fat diet-induced steatohepatitis in mice by improving gut microbiota and gastrointestinal barrier显示文摘AIM To investigate whether gut microbiota metabolite sodium butyrate(Na B)is an effective substance for attenuating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and the internal mechanisms.METHODS Male C57BL/6J mice were divided into three groups,normal control were fed standard chow and model group were fed a high-fat diet(HFD)for 16 wk,the intervention group were fed HFD for 16 wk and treated with Na B for 8 wk.Gut microbiota from each group were detected at baseline and at 16 wk,liver histology were evaluated and gastrointestinal barrier indicator such as zonula occluden-1(ZO-1)were detected by immunohistochemistry and realtime-PCR,further serum or liver endotoxin were determined by ELISA and inflammation-or metabolism-associated genes were quantified by real-time PCR.RESULTS Na B corrected the HFD-induced gut microbiota imbalance in mice,while it considerably elevated the abundances of the beneficial bacteria Christensenellaceae,Blautia and Lactobacil us.These bacteria can produce butyric acid in what seems like a virtuous circle.And butyrate restored HFD induced intestinal mucosa damage,increased the expression of ZO-1 in small intestine,further decreased the levels of gut endotoxin in serum and liver compared with HF group.Endotoxin-associated genes such as TLR4 and Myd88,pro-inflammation genes such as MCP-1,TNF-α,IL-1,IL-2,IL-6 and IFN-γin liver or epididymal fat were obviously downregulated after Na B intervention.Liver inflammation and fat accumulation were ameliorated,the levels of TG and cholesterol in liver were decreased after Na B intervention,NAS score was significantly decreased,metabolic indices such as FBG and HOMA-IR and liver function indicators ALT and AST were improved compared with HF group.CONCLUSION Na B may restore the dysbiosis of gut microbiota to attenuate steatohepatitis,which is suggested to be a potential gut microbiota modulator and therapeutic substance for NAFLD. | Da Zhou Qin Pan Feng-Zhi Xin Rui-Nan Zhang Chong-Xin He Guang-Yu Chen Chang Liu Yuan-Wen Chen Jian-Gao Fan | 2017 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2017,23,1: | 77 |

| 3 | Morphological study on colonic pathology in ulcerative colitis treated by moxibustion显示文摘AIM To observe the therapeutic effect ofmoxibustion on ulcerative colitis and itsinfluence on the colonic mucosal morphology.METHODS Forty-six patients with ulcerativecolitis were randomly divided into themoxibustion with herbal medicine underneathgroup and the western medicine group.Thirtypatients were treated with the abovemoxibustion and 16 patients with Salicylayefapyridine(SASP).The colonic mucosa of 13patients in the moxibustion group was observedby colonoscopy before and after the treatment.Mucin was also analyzed by H.E and AB-PASstaining.RESULTS Seventeen patients were clinicallycured,12 were improved and 1 unchanged in themoxibustion group.In the control group,5patients were clinically cured,7 improved and 4unchanged.Thirteen patients with active UCwere taken as the subjects for histopathologicanalysis in this study.The colonic mucosallesions were remarkably improved and thecharacteristic of the mucin also changed.Inmost sections,the chronic inflammation ofmucosa was geatly ameliorated(P<0.01).Theinflammatory cell infiltratation much decreased and neutrophils,disapeared in most sections(P<0.001).The goblet cells significantlyincreased(P<0.001);crypt paracrypt abscessor mucosal ulceration was seen(P<0.001).CONCLUSION The rate of cure of ulcerative colitis by moxibustion with herbal medicine beneath is superior to that by SASP. | 4 | Effect of Liuweibuqi capsule, a Chinese patent medicine, on the JAK1/STAT3 pathway and MMP9/TIMP1 in a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease rat model显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To observe effect of Liuweibuqi Capsule, a Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), on the janus kinase(JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription(STAT) pathway and matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs) in a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) rat model with lung deficiency in terms of TCM's pattern differentiation.METHODS: Rats were randomly divided into a normal group, model group, Liuweibuqi group, Jinshuibao group, and spleen aminopeptidase group(n=10). Aside from the normal group, all rats were ex-posed to smoke plus lipopolysaccharide tracheal instillation to establish the COPD model with lung deficiency. Models were established after 28 days and then the normal and model groups were given normal saline(0.09 g/kg), Liuweibuqi group was given Liuweibuqi capsule(0.35 g/kg), Jinshuibao group was given Jinshuibao capsules(0.495 g/kg), and the spleen group was given spleen aminopeptidase(0.33 mg/kg), once a day for 30 days. Changes in symptoms, signs, and lung histology were observed. Lung function was measured with a spirometer. Serum cytokines were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and changes in the JAK/STAT pathway, MMP-9, and MMPs inhibitor1(TIMP1) were detected by immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, and western blotting, respectively.RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, lung tissue was damaged, and lung function was reduced in the model control group. Additionally, the levels of interleukin(IL)-1β, γ interferon(IFN-γ), and IL-6 were higher, while IL-4 and IL-10 were lower in the model control group than those in the normal group. The expressions of JAK1, STAT3, p-STAT3,and MMP-9 m RNA and protein in lung tissue were higher, and TIMP1 m RNA and protein was lower in the model group compared with the normal group.After treatment, compared with the model group,the expression of inflammatory cytokines was lower in each treatment group, and expressions of JAK/STAT pathway, MMPs were lower. | 6 | Neutrophil extracellular traps mediate the crosstalk between glioma progression and the tumor microenvironment via the HMGB1/RAGE/IL-8 axis显示文摘Objective:Neutrophil extracellular traps(NETs)produced by tumor-infiltrating neutrophils(TINs)are associated with poor prognosis in patients with several types of cancer.However,the mechanisms underlying the involvement of NETs in glioma progression remain largely unknown.This study aimed to elucidate the roles of NETs in biological processes that drive the crosstalk between glioma progression and the tumor microenvironment.Methods:Neutrophil infiltration and NETs formation were investigated in glioma tissue through immunohistochemistry,and their relationships with clinicopathological features and outcomes were statistically evaluated.The effects of NETs on glioma cell progression were studied in a co-culture system.In vivo and in vitro experiments validated the reactive oxygen species activity and cytokine production of TINs,as well as the ERK signaling pathway activation and the metastasis of gliomas.Results:Neutrophil infiltration and NETs formation were induced in high-grade glioma compared with low-grade glioma.NETs induced by TINs were determined to be an oncogenic marker of high-grade gliomas and to be involved in cell proliferation and invasion.NETs overproduction promoted glioma cell proliferation,migration,and invasion.Furthermore,HMGB1 was found to bind to RAGE and activate the NF-κB signaling pathway in vitro.In addition,NETs stimulated the NF-κB signaling pathway,thus promoting IL-8 secretion in glioblastoma.Subsequently,IL-8 recruited neutrophils which in turn mediated NETs formation via the PI3 K/AKT/ROS axis in TINs.Conclusions:Our results suggest that NETs produced by TINs mediate the crosstalk between glioma progression and the tumor microenvironment by regulating the HMGB1/RAGE/IL-8 axis.Targeting NETs formation or IL-8 secretion may be an effective approach to inhibit glioma progression. | Caijun Zha Xiangqi Meng Lulu Li Shan Mi Da Qian Ziwei Li Pengfei Wu Shaoshan Hu Shihong Zhao Jinquan Cai Yanhong Liu | 2020 | Cancer Biology & Medicine2020,17,1: | 19 |

| 8 | Effectiveness of Different Waist Circumference Cut-off Values in Predicting Metabolic Syndrome Prevalence and Risk Factors in Adults in China显示文摘Objective To study the effectiveness of waist circumference cut-off values in predicting the prevalence of metabolic syndrome(MetS) and risk factors in adults in China. Methods A cross-sectional survey was condcuted in 14 provinces(autonomous region, municipality) in China. A total of 47 325 adults aged ≥20 years were selected by multistage stratified sampling, and questionnaire survey and physical and clinical examination were conducted among them. MetS was defined according to the International Diabetes Federation(IDF) criteria and modified IDF criteria.Results The age-standardized prevalence of MetS was 24.2%(22.1% in men and 25.8% in women) and 19.5%(22.1% in men and 18.0% in women) according to the IDF criteria and modified IDF criteria respectively. The age-standardized prevalence of pre-MetS was 8.1%(8.6% in men and 7.8% in women) according to the modified IDF criteria. The prevalence of MetS was higher in urban residents than rural residents and in northern China residents than in southern China residents. The prevalence of central obesity was about 30% in both men and women according to the ethnicity-specific cut-off values of waist circumference for central obesity(90 cm for men and 85 cm for women). Multivariate regression analysis revealed no significant difference in risk factors between the two MetS definitions. | 9 | Staging laparoscopy improves treatment decision-makingfor advanced gastric cancer显示文摘AIM To evaluate the clinical value of staging laparoscopyin treatment decision-making for advancedgastric cancer (GC).METHODS: Clinical data of 582 patients with advancedGC were retrospectively analyzed. All patientsunderwent staging laparoscopy. The strength ofagreement between computed tomography (CT) stage,endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) stage, laparoscopic stage,and final stage were determined by weighted Kappastatistic (Kw). The number of patients with treatmentdecision-changes was counted. A χ 2 test was used toanalyze the correlation between peritoneal metastasisor positive cytology and clinical characteristics.RESULTS: Among the 582 patients, the distributions ofpathological T classifications were T2/3 (153, 26.3%),T4a (262, 45.0%), and T4b (167, 28.7%). Treatmentplans for 211 (36.3%) patients were changed after staging laparoscopy was performed. Two (10.5%) of19 patients in M1 regained the opportunity for potentialradical resection by staging laparoscopy. Unnecessarylaparotomy was avoided in 71 (12.2%) patients. Thestrength of agreement between preoperative T stageand final T stage was in almost perfect agreement (Kw= 0.838; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.803-0.872;P 〈 0.05) for staging laparoscopy; compared with CTand EUS, which was in fair agreement. The strengthof agreement between preoperative M stage andfinal M stage was in almost perfect agreement (Kw= 0.990; 95% CI: 0.977-1.000; P 〈 0.05) for staginglaparoscopy; compared with CT, which was in slightagreement. | 13 | Passive-source ocean bottom seismograph(OBS) array experiment in South China Sea and data quality analyses显示文摘Long-term passive source ocean bottom seismograph(OBS) observatory is challenging due to various technical difficulties. In order to gain experience in this field, and to reveal the lithospheric structure beneath the extinct ridge in the central South China Sea(SCS), we carried out a passive source OBS array experiment, which includes 18 OBSs, in the deep portion of SCS. Here we present the instrumentation, the OBS deployment and recovery of this experiment, and more importantly, the data quality evaluated by a number of approaches. Through processing and inspecting waveforms from global, regional and local earthquakes, we find that most of recovered OBSs have good data quality with discernible main phases. The ambient noise analyses of OBS recordings show that their noise is higher than the global average, and the horizontal component is noisier than the vertical, indicating current impacts on horizontal components are more severe. In the period range of 5–10 s, there is a noise notch for the SCS OBSs, and noise levels of horizontal components are comparable to the vertical. This feature, which is not seen at OBS stations in open ocean, suggests the distant sources for double frequency microseism in this marginal sea are not significant. In addition, we successfully determined the orientations for 7 OBSs by investigating their Rayleigh wave polarizations; and we demonstrated the dispersion feature of Rayleigh waves through the frequency-time analysis. | 15 | Optimization design and analysis of Si-^(63)Ni betavoltaic battery显示文摘Among the various micro-powers being investigated, betavoltaic batteries are very attractive for numerous applications because of their advantages of high energy density, long life, strong anti-interference, and so on. Based on the basic principle of the betavoltaic effect, the current paper adopted the Monte Carlo N-Particle code to simulate the transport processes of β particles in semiconductor materials and to establish the calculation formulas for nuclear radiation-generated current, open circuit voltage, and so on. By discussing the effect of minority carrier diffusion length, doping concentration, and junction depth on the property of batteries, the present work concluded that the best parameters for batteries are the use of silicon and the radioisotope Ni-63, i.e., Ni-63 with a mass thickness of 1 mg/cm2, Na=1×1019 cm-3, Nd=3.16×1016 cm-3, junction area of 1 cm2, junction depth of 0.3 μm, and so on. Under these parameters the short-circuit current, open circuit voltage, output power, and conversion efficiency are 573.3 nA, 0.253 V, 99.85 nW, and 4.94%, respectively. | 17 | mi R-192-5p regulates lipid synthesis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease through SCD-1显示文摘AIM To evaluate the levels of mi R-192-5 p in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) models and demonstrate the role of mi R-192-5 p in lipid accumulation. METHODS Thirty Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups, which were given a standard diet, a high-fat diet(HFD), and an HFD with injection of liraglutide. At the end of 16 weeks, hepatic mi R-192-5 p and stearoyl-Co A desaturase 1(SCD-1) levels were measured. Mi R-192-5 p mimic and inhibitor and SCD-1 si RNA were transfected into Huh7 cells exposed to palmitic acid(PA). Lipid accumulation was evaluated by oil red O staining and triglyceride assays. Direct interaction was validated by dual-luciferase reporter gene assays.RESULTS The HFD rats showed a 0.46-fold decrease and a 3.5-fold increase in hepatic mi R-192-5 p and SCD-1 protein levels compared with controls, respectively, which could be reversed after disease remission by liraglutide injection(P < 0.01). The Huh7 cells exposed to PA also showed down-regulation and up-regulation of mi R-192-5 p and SCD-1 protein levels, respectively(P < 0.01). Transfection with mi R-192-5 p mimic and inhibitor in Huh7 cells induced dramatic repression and promotion of SCD-1 protein levels, respectively(P < 0.01). Luciferase activity was suppressed and enhanced by mi R-192-5 p mimic and inhibitor, respectively, in wild-type SCD-1(P < 0.01) but not in mutant SCD-1. | 18 | Chronic niacin overload may be involved in the increased prevalence of obesity in US children显示文摘AIM: To investigate nicotinamide’s action on glucose metabolism, and the association between niacin consumption and obesity prevalence. METHODS: Dynamic nicotinamide’s effect on plasma hydrogen peroxide and glucose metabolism was in- vestigated using oral glucose tolerance tests with or without nicotinamide in the same five healthy subjects.Lag-regression analysis was used to examine the association between the niacin consumption and the obesity prevalence among US children using the data from the Economic Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture and from US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, respectively. RESULTS: Compared with the control oral glucose tolerance test, the 1-h plasma hydrogen peroxide (1.4 ± 0.1 μmol/L vs 1.6 ± 0.1 μmol/L, P = 0.016) and insulin levels (247.1 ± 129.0 pmol/L vs 452.6 ± 181.8 pmol/L, P = 0.028) were signif icantly higher, and the 3-h blood glucose was signif icantly lower (5.8 ± 1.2 mmol/L vs 4.5 ± 1.1 mmol/L, P = 0.002) after coadministration of glucose and 300 mg nicotinamide. The obesity prevalence among American children increased with the increasing per capita niacin consumption, the increasing grain contribution to niacin due to niacin-fortification, and the increasing niacin-fortified ready-to-eat cereal consumption, with a 10-year lag. The regression analyses showed that the obesity prevalence in the US children of all age groups was determined by niacin consumption (R2 = 0.814, 0.961 and 0.94 for 2-5 years, 6-11 years and 12-19 years age groups, respectively). CONCLUSION: The appetite-stimulating effect of nicotinamide appears to involve oxidative stress. | 20 | A fuzzy PID-controlled SMA actuator for a two-DOF joint显示文摘Shape memory alloy(SMA) actuator is a potential advanced component for servosystems of aerospace vehicles and aircraft. This paper presents a joint with two degrees of freedom(DOF) and a mobility range close to ±60 when driven by SMA triple wires. The fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative(PID)-controlled actuator drive was designed using antagonistic SMA triple wires, and the resistance feedback signal made a closed loop. Experiments showed that, with the driving responding frequency increasing, the overstress became harder to be avoided at the position under the maximum friction force. Furthermore, the hysteresis gap between the heating and cooling paths of the strain-to-resistance curve expanded under this condition. A fuzzy logic control was considered as a solution, and the curves of the wires were then modeled by fitting polynomials so that the measured resistance was used directly to determine the control signal. Accurate control was demonstrated through the step response, and the experimental results showed that under the fuzzy PID-control program, the mean absolute error(MAE) of the rotation angle was about 3.147.
