| 3 | Expenditure and financial burden for the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer in China:a hospital.based,multicenter,cross-sectional survey显示文摘Background: The increasing prevalence of colorectal cancer(CRC) in China and the paucity of information about relevant expenditure highlight the necessity of better understanding the financial burden and effect of CRC diagnosis and treatment. We performed a survey to quantify the direct medical and non-medical expenditure as well as the resulting financial burden of CRC patients in China.Methods: We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional survey in 37 tertiary hospitals in 13 provinces across China between 2012 and 2014. Each enrolled patient was interviewed using a structured questionnaire. All expenditure data were inflated to the 2014 Chinese Yuan(CNY; 1 CNY = 0.163 USD). We quantified the overall expenditure and financial burden and by subgroup(hospital type, age at diagnosis, sex, education, occupation, insurance type, household income, clinical stage, pathologic type, and therapeutic regimen). We then performed generalized linear modeling to determine the factors associated with overall expenditure.Results: A total of 2356 patients with a mean age of 57.4 years were included, 57.1 % of whom were men; 13.9% of patients had stage I cancer; and the average previous-year household income was 54,525 CNY.The overall average direct expenditure per patient was estimated to be 67,408 CNY, and the expenditures for stage Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, and Ⅳ disease were 56,099 CNY, 59,952 CNY, 67,292 CNY, and 82,729 CNY, respectively. Non-medical expenditure accounted for 8.3%of the overall expenditure. The 1-year out-of-pocket expenditure of a newly diagnosed patient was 32,649 CNY, which accounted for 59.9% of their previous-year household income and caused 75.0% of families to suffer an unmanageable financial burden. Univariate analysis showed that financial burden and overall expenditure differed in almost all subgroups(P < 0.05), except for sex. Multivariate analysis showed that patients who were treated in specialized hospitals and those who were diagnosed with adenocarcinoma or diagnosed at a later stage were likely to spend more,whereas those with a lower household income and those who underwent surgery spent less(all P < 0.05).Conclusions: For patients in China, direct expenditure for the diagnosis and treatment of CRC seemed catastrophic,and non-medical expenditure was non-ignorable. | 7 | Simultaneous incorporation of PTH(1-34) and nano-hydroxyapatite into Chitosan/Alginate Hydrogels for efficient bone regeneration显示文摘Tissue regeneration based on the utilization of artificial soft materials is considered a promising treatment for bone-related diseases.Here,we report cranial bone regeneration promoted by hydrogels that contain parathyroid hormone(PTH)peptide PTH(1-34)and nano-hydroxyapatite(nHAP).A combination of the positively charged natural polymer chitosan(CS)and negatively charged sodium alginate led to the formation of hydrogels with porous structures,as shown by scanning electron microscopy.Rheological characterizations revealed that the mechanical properties of the hydrogels were almost maintained upon the addition of nHAP and PTH(1-34).In vitro experiments showed that the hydrogel containing nHAP and PTH(1-34)exhibited strong biocompatibility and facilitated osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(rBMSCs)via the Notch signaling pathway,as shown by the upregulated expression of osteogenic-related proteins.We found that increasing the content of PTH(1-34)in the hydrogels resulted in enhanced osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs.Implantation of the complex hydrogel into a rat cranial defect model led to efficient bone regeneration compared to the rats treated with the hydrogel alone or with nHAP,indicating the simultaneous therapeutic effect of nHAP and PTH during the treatment process.Both the in vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that simultaneously incorporating nHAP and PTH into hydrogels shows promise for bone regeneration,suggesting a new strategy for tissue engineering and regeneration in the future. | Zhiyuan Zou Le Wang Zhifei Zhou Qing Sun Delong Liu Yan Chen Hao Hu Yu Cai Sixiong Lin Zhengran Yu Bizhi Tan Wei Guo Zemin Ling Xuenong Zou | 2021 | Bioactive Materials2021,6,6: | 7 |

| 9 | Synergistic effects of magnesium ions and simvastatin on attenuation of high-fat diet-induced bone loss显示文摘Introduction:Magnesium(Mg)has a prophylactic potential against the onset of hyperlipidemia.Similar to statin,Mg is recommended as lipid-lowering medication for hypercholesterolemia and concomitantly exhibits an association with increased bone mass.The combination of statin with Mg ions(Mg^(2+))may be able to alleviate the high-fat diet(HFD)-induced bone loss and reduce the side-effects of statin.This study aimed to explore the feasibility of combined Mg^(2+)with simvastatin(SIM)for treating HFD-induced bone loss in mice and the involving mechanisms.Materials and methods:C57BL/6 male mice were fed with a HFD or a normal-fat diet(NFD).Mice were intraperitoneally injected SIM and/or orally received water with additional Mg^(2+)until sacrificed.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to measure cytokines and cholesterol in serum and liver lysates.Bone mineral density(BMD)and microarchitecture were assessed by micro-computed tomography(μCT)in different groups.The adipogenesis in palmitate pre-treated HepG2 cells was performed under various treatments.Results:μCT analysis showed that the trabecular bone mass was significantly lower in the HFD-fed group than that in NFD-fed group since week 8.The cortical thickness in HFD-fed group had a significant decrease at week 24,as compared with NFD-fed group.The combination of Mg^(2+)and SIM significantly attenuated the trabecular bone loss in HFD-fed mice via arresting the osteoclast formation and bone resorption.Besides,such combination also reduced the hepatocytic synthesis of cholesterol and inhibited matrix metallopeptidase 13(Mmp13)mRNA expression in pre-osteoclasts.Conclusions:The combination of Mg^(2+)and SIM shows a synergistic effect on attenuating the HFD-induced bone loss.Our current formulation may be a cost-effective alternative treatment to be indicated for obesity-related bone loss. | Bingyang Dai Xu Li Jiankun Xu Yuwei Zhu Le Huang Wenxue Tong Hao Yao Dick Ho-kiu Chow Ling Qin | 2021 | Bioactive Materials2021,6,8: | 4 |

| 13 | Optimization of Technology for Increasing Total Ester Content of Jujube Wine by Adding Nutrients显示文摘Using jujube juice prepared from red jujube as raw material and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as experimental strain,the effect of nutrients on the content of total ester in jujube wine was studied. The nutrients affecting the total ester content of jujube wine were glutamine,arginine,calcium chloride and biotin by Plackett-Burman design. Through the steepest ascent test,it was determined that the central points of the optimum addition of nutrients were glutamine 40 mg/L,arginine 50 mg/L,calcium chloride 35 mg/L and biotin 0. 25 mg/L,respectively.Through Box-Behnken experiment design,taking glutamine,arginine,calcium chloride and biotin as experimental factors,and the content of total ester in jujube wine as response value,the response surface optimization experiment was carried out and the verification experiment was also carried out. It was found that the response surface model can be used to predict the total ester content of jujube wine when nutritional elements were added. When the content of total ester in jujube wine was the highest,the optimal combination of nutrients was glutamine38. 8 mg/L,arginine 53. 8 mg/L,calcium chloride 35. 7 mg/L and biotin 0. 3 mg/L. At this point,the content of total ester in jujube wine was 628 mg/L,which was very close to the predicted value. | 15 | A novel spoof surface plasmon polariton structure to reach ultra-strong field confinements显示文摘Ultrathin corrugated metallic structures have been proved to support spoof surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes on two-dimension (2D) planar microwave circuits.However,to provide stronger field confinement,larger width of strip is required to load deeper grooves,which is cumbersome in modern large-scale integrated circuits and chips.In this work,a new spoof SPP transmission line (TL) with zigzag grooves is proposed.This new structure can achieve stronger field confinement compared to conventional one with the same strip width.In other words,the proposed spoof SPP TL behaves equivalently to a conventional one with much larger size.Dispersion analysis theoretically indicates the negative correlation between the ability of field confinement and cutoff frequencies of spoof SPP TLs.Numerical simulations indicate that the cutoff frequency of the proposed TL is lower than the conventional one and can be easily modified with the fixed size.Furthermore,two samples of the new and conventional spoof SPP TLs are fabricated for experimental demonstration.Measured S-parameters and field distributions verify the ultra-strong ability of field confinement of the proposed spoof SPP TL.Hence,this novel spoof SPP structure with ultra-strong field confinement may find wide applications in microwave and terahertz engineering. | Pei Hang He Hao Chi Zhang Xinxin Gao Ling Yun Niu Wen Xuan Tang Jiayuan Lu Le Peng Zhang Tie Jun Cui | 2019 | Opto-Electronic Advances2019,2,6: | 2 |

| 17 | Combination of a biopharmaceutic classification system and physiologically based pharmacokinetic models to predict absorption properties of baicalein in vitro and in vivo显示文摘Objective: To determine the in vitro and in vivo absorption properties of active ingredients of the Chinese medicine, baicalein, to enrich mechanistic understanding of oral drug absorption.Methods: The Biopharmaceutic Classification System(BCS) category was determined using equilibrium solubility, intrinsic dissolution rate, and intestinal permeability to evaluate intestinal absorption mechanisms of baicalein in rats in vitro. Physiologically based pharmacokinetic(PBPK) model commercial software GastroPlus~(TM) was used to predict oral absorption of baicalein in vivo.Results: Based on equilibrium solubility, intrinsic dissolution rate, and permeability values of main absorptive segments in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, baicalein was classified as a drug with low solubility and high permeability. Intestinal perfusion with venous sampling(IPVS) revealed that baicalein was extensively metabolized in the body, which corresponded to the low bioavailability predicted by the PBPK model. Further, the PBPK model predicted the key indicators of BCS, leading to reclassification as BCS-II. Predicted values of peak plasma concentration of the drug(C_(max)) and area under the curve(AUC)fell within two times of the error of the measured results, highlighting the superior prediction of absorption of baicalein in rats, beagles, and humans. The PBPK model supported in vitro and in vivo evidence and provided excellent prediction for this BCS class II drug.Conclusion: BCS and PBPK are complementary methods that enable comprehensive research of BCS parameters, intestinal absorption rate, metabolism, prediction of human absorption fraction and bioavailability, simulation of PK, and drug absorption in various intestinal segments across species.
