| 1 | Effects of Eu3+ and Dy3+ doping or co-doping on optical and structural properties of BaB2Si2O8 phosphor for white LED applications显示文摘A series of Eu3+ and Dy3+ doped/co-doped as well as un-doped BaB2Si2O8 phosphors were synthesized via solid state reaction method. The PL result showed typical blue and green emission from Dy3+ and red emission from Eu3+. The f-f transitions involving the lanthanide ions along with dopant site occupancy were discussed thoroughly. Phonon assisted energy transfer process was observed from Eu3+ to Dy3+, which enhanced the emissions of Dy3+. Combinations of the emissions from Eu3+ and Dy3+ showed a possible white to red tuneable emission on the CIE diagram. The white warmth emissions of the phosphor were revealed to be adjustable through designing the dopant concentration and excitation wavelengths. An unusual energy transfer that originated from Eu3+ to Dy3+ was also discovered and the energy transfer mechanism was discussed. Proposed energy transfer mechanism was investigated using luminescence decay lifetime. All the phosphor exhibited efficient excitation in the UV range which matched well with the emissions from Ga N-based LED chips. This presented the Ba B2Si2O8 phosphor as a promising candidate for white LED applications. | 3 | Complete Genome Sequences of the SARS-CoV: the BJ Group (Isolates BJ01-BJ04)显示文摘Beijing has been one of the epicenters attacked most severely by the SARS-CoV (severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus) since the first patient was diagnosed in one of the city's hospitals. We now report complete genome sequences of the BJ Group, including four isolates (Isolates B J01, B J02, B J03,and B J04) of the SARS-CoV. It is remarkable that all members of the BJ Group share a common haplotype, consisting of seven loci that differentiate the group from other isolates published to date. Among 42 substitutions uniquely identifled from the BJ group, 32 are non-synonymous changes at the amino acid level.Rooted phylogenetic trees, proposed on the basis of haplotypes and other sequence variations of SARS-CoV isolates from Canada, USA, Singapore, and China, gave rise to different paradigms but positioned the BJ Group, together with the newly discovered GD01 (GD-Ins29) in the same clade, followed by the H-U Group (from Hong Kong to USA) and the H-T Group (from Hong Kong to Toronto), leaving the SP Group (Singapore) more distant. | 5 | The M Protein of SARS-CoV: Basic Structural and Immunological Properties显示文摘We studied structural and immunological properties of the SARS-CoV M (mem-brane) protein, based on comparative analyses of sequence features, phylogeneticinvestigation, and experimental results. The M protein is predicted to contain atriple-spanning transmembrane (TM) region, a single N-glycosylation site near itsN-terminus that is in the exterior of the virion, and a long C-terminal region inthe interior. The M protein harbors a higher substitution rate (0.6% correlated toits size) among viral open reading frames (ORFs) from published data. The foursubstitutions detected in the M protein, which cause non-synonymous changes,can be classified into three types. One of them results in changes of pI (isoelectricpoint) and charge, affecting antigenicity. The second changes hydrophobicity of theTM region, and the third one relates to hydrophilicity of the interior structure.Phylogenetic tree building based on the variations of the M protein appears tosupport the non-human origin of SARS-CoV. To investigate its immunogenicity,we synthesized eight oligopeptides covering 69.2% of the entire ORF and screenedthem by using ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) with sera from SARSpatients. | 7 | Structural Evidence for α-Synuclein Fibrils Using in Situ Atomic Force Microscopy显示文摘Human α-synuclein is a presynaptic terminal protein and can form insoluble fibrils that are believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies and Lewy body variant of Alzheimer's disease. In this paper, in situ atomic force microscopy has been used to study the structural properties of α-synuclein fibrils in solution using two different atomic force microscopy imaging modes: tapping mode and contact mode. In the in situ contact mode atomic force microscopy experiments α-synuclein fibrils quickly broke into fragments, and a similar phenomenon was found using tapping mode atomic force microscopy in which α-synuclein fibrils were incubated with guanidine hydrochloride (0.6 M). The α-synuclein fibrils kept their original filamentous topography for over 1h in the in situ tapping mode atomic force microscopy experiments.
