| 1 | Size distribution of chemical elements and their source apportionment in ambient coarse, fine, and ultrafine particles in Shanghai urban summer atmosphere显示文摘Ambient coarse particles (diameter 1.8-10 μm), fine particles (diameter 0.1-1.8 μm), and ultrafine particles (diameter < 0.1 μm) in the atmosphere of the city of Shanghai were sampled during the summer of 2008 (from Aug 27 to Sep 08). Microscopic characterization of the particles was investigated by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). Mass concentrations of Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, and Pb in the size-resolved particles were quantified by using synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence (SRXRF). Source apportionment of the chemical elements was analyzed by means of an enrichment factor method. Our results showed that the average mass concentrations of coarse particles, fine particles and ultrafine particles in the summer air were 9.38 ± 2.18, 8.82 ± 3.52, and 2.02 ± 0.41 μg/m3, respectively. The mass percentage of the fine particles accounted for 51.47% in the total mass of PM10, indicating that fine particles are the major component in the Shanghai ambient particles. SEM/EDX results showed that the coarse particles were dominated by minerals, fine particles by soot aggregates and fly ashes, and ultrafine particles by soot particles and unidentified particles. SRXRF results demonstrated that crustal elements were mainly distributed in the coarse particles, while heavy metals were in higher proportions in the fine particles. Source apportionment revealed that Si, K, Ca, Fe, Mn, Rb, and Sr were from crustal sources, and S, Cl, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, and Pb from anthropogenic sources. | 2 | Atmospheric HULIS and its ability to mediate the reactive oxygen species (ROS): A review显示文摘Atmospheric humic-like substances(HULIS) are not only an unresolved mixture of macroorganic compounds but also powerful chelating agents in atmospheric particulate matters(PMs); impacting on both the properties of aerosol particles and health effects by generating reactive oxygen species(ROS). Currently, the interests of HULIS are intensively shifting to the investigations of HULIS-metal synergic effects and kinetics modeling studies, as well as the development of HULIS quantification, findings of possible HULIS sources and generation of ROS from HULIS. In light of HULIS studies, we comprehensively review the current knowledge of isolation and physicochemical characterization of HULIS from atmospheric samples as well as HULIS properties(hygroscopic, surface activity, and colloidal) and possible sources of HULIS.This review mainly highlights the generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) from PMs, HULIS and transition metals, especially iron. This review also summarized the mechanism of ironorganic complexation and recent findings of OH formation from HULIS-metal complexes. | 6 | The mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 pathway involved in hepatic gluconeogenesis through peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptorγcoactivator-1a显示文摘Cattle can efficiently perform de novo generation of glucose through hepatic gluconeogenesis to meet post-weaning glucose demand.Substantial evidence points to cattle and non-ruminant animals being characterized by phylogenetic features in terms of their differing capacity for hepatic gluconeogenesis,a process that is highly efficient in cattle yet the underlying mechanism remains unclear.Here we used a variety of transcriptome data,as well as tissue and cell-based methods to uncover the mechanisms of high-efficiency hepatic gluconeogenesis in cattle.We showed that cattle can efficiently convert propionate into pyruvate,at least partly,via high expression of acyl-CoA synthetase short-chain family member 1(ACSS1),propionyl-CoA carboxylase alpha chain(PCCA),methylmalonyl-CoA epimerase(MCEE),methylmalonyl-CoA mutase(MMUT),and succinate-CoA ligase(SUCLG2)genes in the liver(P<0.01).Moreover,higher expression of the rate-limiting enzymes of gluconeogenesis,such as phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase(PCK)and fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase(FBP),ensures the efficient operation of hepatic gluconeogenesis in cattle(P<0.01).Mechanistically,we found that cattle liver exhibits highly active mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1(mTORC1),and the expressions of PCCA,MMUT,SUCLG2,PCK,and FBP genes are regulated by the activation of mTORC1(P<0.001).Finally,our results showed that mTORC1 promotes hepatic gluconeogenesis in a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1a(PGC-1a)dependent manner.Collectively,our results not only revealed an important mechanism responsible for the quantitative differences in the efficiency of hepatic gluconeogenesis in cattle versus non-ruminant animals,but also established that mTORC1 is indeed involved in the regulation of hepatic gluconeogenesis through PGC-1a.These results provide a novel potential insight into promoting hepatic gluconeogenesis through activated mTORC1 in both ruminants and mammals. | Guoyan Wang Jun Zhang Shengru Wu Senlin Qin Yining Zheng Chao Xia Huijun Geng Junhu Yao Lu Deng | 2022 | Animal Nutrition2022,,4: | 1 |

| 10 | Oxidative damages to DNA by indoor PM_(10)s: Their relationships with trace element compositions显示文摘Plasmid DNA assay and ICP-MS analysis were conducted in order to investigate the bioreactivity of inhalable particles (PM_ 10) and the relationship between bioreactivity and trace element compositions of PM_ 10 in Beijing air. A total of four PM_ 10 samples were carefully selected to represent the indoor and corresponding outdoor environments: one from urban smoker’s home, two from non-smoker’s homes, and the other from the outdoor. In general, the oxidative damage by indoor PM_ 10 was slightly higher than that of outdoor. Among the four sets of samples, the PM_ 10 from the smoker’s home had a lowest TD50 (toxic dose of PM_ 10 causing 50% DNA to be damaged), being 100 μg·mL -1, suggesting the highest bioreactivity. The heavy metals are believed to be the main reason for oxidative damage to plasmid DNA. The ICP-MS analysis combined with the DNA assay showed that the water-soluble zinc levels had better relationship with TD50 values than other elements, implying that water-soluble zinc might play an important role in the damage of DNA. It is concluded that the PM_ 10 in smoker’s home had the highest level of water-soluble zinc as well as the lowest TD50 (highest bioreactivity). Iron is considered to be one of the most bioreactive elements, but it will cause little damage to plasmid DNA, probably because iron is mainly in water-insoluble state in Beijing PM_ 10. | SHAO Longyi ZHAO Houyin T. | 11 | Investigation of the impact of hydrodynamic conditions on sediment resuspension in shallow lakes显示文摘In this study,we sampled the original sediment columns from three points located in the eastern,central,and western areas of Chaohu Lake,and then investigated sediment resuspension under hydraulic disturbances in the laboratory. The results showed that when the hydraulic disturbance is weak and sediment surface shear stress is small (<0.02 N/m²),sediment surface layer moves alone. When the hydraulic disturbance is moderate and sediment surface shear stress is within a threshold (3.7 N/m²),only a small proportion of the surface sediments begins to move. However,when the hydraulic disturbance is further strengthened and sediment surface shear stress is larger than the threshold value,surface sediments move smoothly. By the experimental results,we found that the plankton layer is about 1 mm (1.56% of the maximum content of suspended matter (SSCmax)),which is the major contribution of individual sediment initiation. The new sediment layer is about 19–22 mm (20.9% of the SSCmax),which considerably affects sediment resuspension in shallow lakes. The consolidated layer is about 22 mm below the bed surface,which requires high shear stress and is hard to be transferred to the water column.
