2Effects of overburden characteristics on dynamic failure in underground coal mining显示文摘Dynamic failures, or ‘‘bumps', remain an imperative safety concern in underground coal mining, despite significant advancements in engineering controls. The presence of spatially discrete, stiff roof units are one feature that has been linked to these events. However, an empirical stratigraphic review indicates that no significant difference exists in the relative commonality of discrete units between bumping and non-bumping deposits. Instead an apparent relationship exists between reportable bumping and the overall stiffness of the host rock. However, this initial study is too simplistic to be conclusive; to weight the relative impact of changes in a single variable, such as the thickness or location of sandstone members, it must be examined in isolation—i.e., in a setting where all other variables are held constant.Numerical modelling provides this setting, and the effects of variability in a stiff discrete member in a hypothetical longwall mining scenario are investigated within the context of three stratigraphic ‘‘types',Compliant, Intermediate and Stiff. A modelling experiment examines changes in rupture potential in stiff roof units for each stratigraphic type as discrete unit thickness and location are manipulated through a range of values. Results suggest that the stiff-to-compliant ratio of the host rock has an impact on the relative stress-inducing effects of discrete stiff members. In other words, it is necessary to consider both the thickness and the distance to the seam, within the context of the host rock, to accurately anticipate areas of elevated rupture-induced hazard; acknowledging the presence of a discrete unit within the overburden in general terms is an insufficient indicator of risk. This finding helps to refine our understanding of the role of individual stiff, strong roof members in bumping phenomena, and suggests that a holistic view of overburden lithology and site-specific numerical modelling may be necessary to improve miner safety.Lawson Heather E. 3Analysis of the current rib support practices and techniques in U.S. coal mines显示文摘Design of rib support systems in U.S. coal mines is based primarily on local practices and experience. A better understanding of current rib support practices in U.S. coal mines is crucial for developing a sound engineering rib support design tool. The objective of this paper is to analyze the current practices of rib control in U.S. coal mines. Twenty underground coal mines were studied representing various coal basins,coal seams,geology,loading conditions,and rib control strategies. The key findings are:(1) any rib design guideline or tool should take into account external rib support as well as internal bolting;(2) rib bolts on their own cannot contain rib spall,especially in soft ribs subjected to significant load—external rib control devices such as mesh are required in such cases to contain rib sloughing;(3) the majority of the studied mines follow the overburden depth and entry height thresholds recommended by the Program Information Bulletin 11-29 issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration;(4) potential rib instability occurred when certain geological features prevailed—these include draw slate and/or bone coal near the rib/roof line,claystone partings,and soft coal bench overlain by rock strata;(5) 47% of the studied rib spall was classified as blocky—this could indicate a high potential of rib hazards; and(6) rib injury rates of the studied mines for the last three years emphasize the need for more rib control management for mines operating at overburden depths between 152.4 m and 304.8 m.Mohamed Khaled M. 4Dynamic failure in coal seams Implications of coal composition for bump susceptibility显示文摘As a contributing factor in the dynamic failure(bumping) of coal pillars,a bump-prone coal seam has been described as one that is ‘‘uncleated or poorly cleated,strong...that sustains high stresses.'Despite extensive research regarding engineering controls to help reduce the risk for coal bumps,there is a paucity of research related to the properties of coal itself and how those properties might contribute to the mechanics of failures. Geographic distribution of reportable dynamic failure events reveals a highly localized clustering of incidents despite widespread mining activities. This suggests that unique,contributing geologic characteristics exist within these regions that are less prevalent elsewhere. To investigate a new approach for identifying coal characteristics that might lead to bumping,a principal component analysis(PCA) was performed on 306 coal records from the Pennsylvania State Coal Sample database to determine which characteristics were most closely linked with a positive history of reportable bumping. Selected material properties from the data records for coal samples were chosen as variables for the PCA and included petrographic,elemental,and molecular properties. Results of the PCA suggest a clear correlation between low organic sulfur content and the occurrence of dynamic failure,and a secondary correlation between volatile matter and dynamic failure phenomena. The ratio of volatile matter to sulfur in the samples shows strong correlation with bump-prone regions,with a minimum threshold value of approximately 20,while correlations determined for other petrographic and elemental variables were more ambiguous. Results suggest that the composition of the coal itself is directly linked to how likely a coal is to have experienced a reportable dynamic failure event. 6Aggressive juvenile polyposis in children with chromosome 10q23 deletion显示文摘Juvenile polyps are relatively common findings in children,while juvenile polyposis syndrome(JPS) is a rare hereditary syndrome entailing an increased risk of colorectal cancer.Mutations in BMPR1A or SMAD4 are found in roughly half of patients diagnosed with JPS.Mutations in PTEN gene are also found in patients with juvenile polyps and in Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome and Cowden syndrome.Several previous reports have described microdeletions in chromosome 10q23 encompassing both PTEN and BMPR1A causing aggressive polyposis and malignancy in childhood.These reports have also described extra-intestinal findings in most cases including cardiac anomalies,developmental delay and macrocephaly.In this report we describe a boy with a 5.75 Mb deletion of chromosome 10q23 and a 1.03 Mb deletion within chromosome band 1p31.3who displayed aggressive juvenile polyposis and multiple extra-intestinal anomalies including macrocephaly,developmental delay,short stature,hypothyroidism,atrial septal defect,ventricular septal defect and hypospadias.He required colectomy at six years of age,and early colectomy was a common outcome in other children with similar deletions.Due to the aggressive polyposis and reports of dysplasia and even malignancy at a young age,we propose aggressive gastrointestinal surveillance in children with 10q23 microdeletions encompassing the BMPR1A and PTEN genes to include both the upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts,and also include a flowchart for an effective genetic testing strategy in children with juvenile polyposis.Seth Septer Lei Zhang Caitlin E Lawson Jose Cocjin Thomas Attard Holly H Ardinger 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,14:4

89 二磷酸盐导致颌骨坏死:7例报告及文献复习显示文摘二磷酸盐、焦磷酸盐衍生物是破骨细胞抑制剂,临床主要用于预防骨质疏松症及肿瘤的骨转移。但应用二磷酸盐(bisphosphonates)、帕米磷酸盐(Pamindronate)、唑来膦酸(Zolendronic acid)治疗疾病所导致颌骨坏死的报道逐渐增多,这些患者一般首诊口腔外科医师并由其治疗.上颌骨骨坏死若不处理可导致鼻窦炎,耳鼻咽喉科医师也参与其中。该文对2003~2004年间2所医院的7例患者进行回顾,对患者病史进行分析。结果:患者均有顽固性骨髓炎病史及二磷酸盐服用史.4例发病期间正应用二磷酸盐,3例先前应用过二磷酸盐。3例行手术切除死骨,1例行鼻窦镜手术。结论:二磷酸盐导致颌骨坏死的报道逐渐增多,且治疗困难。因此,对易感人群及此药的安全剂量需要进一步研究。Mortensen M Lawson W Montazem A 2007中国口腔颌面外科杂志2007,5,2:4

11Exploration of petrographic,elemental,and material properties of dynamic failure-prone coals显示文摘The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties and how these correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines.Dynamic failure events,also termed bumps,bounces,or bursts,are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment.These events occur suddenly and often with no warning,resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60%of reportable cases through the Mine Safety and Health Administration(MSHA).A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets,which includes compositional geographic,strength,and Hardgrove grindability index(HGI)data.Results indicated that bumping coals were less mature,lower in carbon,higher in oxygen,softer,and less well cleated than coals that did not bump.High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)values.However,no clear and direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed.The findings of this study established that differences existed between coals that had versus had not experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents.These differences were inherent to the coal itself and were independent of mining-induced risk factors.Results further illuminated how compositional attribute of coal influenced physical properties and began to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status.Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted.Heather Lawson 2020International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,1:3

15Application of Piezoelectric Actuator and Compliant Structures to Achieve Flapping Wing Motion for a MAV显示文摘Micro Aerial Vehicles(MAVs) are the smallest artificial aircraft.Most of the flapping wings MAVs are powered by electric motors of various capacities.We report in this paper the application of piezoelectric actuators as power system for a flapping wing MAV using a compliant displacement amplification mechanism.The actuator used for this application is a pre-stressed cut piece of TH-7R type Thunder actuator.A two-bar compliant mechanism with two flexures has been developed to convert the linear displacement into angular movement and amplification.The specimens were made from carbon fiber links and nylon flexures.We also proposed to use the product of frequency(F) and tip displacement(D), F * D as a criteria for the characterization of an amplifying mechanism.The best specimen according to this criterion is obtained for a 5mm length flexure specimen made of three layers of nylon.The F*D value obtained for this specimen was(0.58) Hz.m.ANSYS finite element analysis results for different flexural thickness and lengths were obtained and have been compared to the experimental results.The effect of both the thickness and length of the flexure on a particular arrangement has been discussed.Kranti. 19Local immunotherapy with interleuk in-2 delivered from biodegradable p olymer microspheres combined with interstitial chemotherapy:a novel treatme nt for experimental malignant glioma显示文摘OBJECTIVE:Local delivery of carmustine(BCNU)from biodegradable polymers prolon gs survival against experimental brain tumors.Moreover,paracrine administration of inte rleukin-2(IL-2)has been shown to elicit a potent antitumor immune response and to improve survival in animal brain tumor models.We r eport the use of a novel polymeric mic rosphere delivery vehicle to release IL-2.We demonstr ate both in vitro release of cytokine from the microspheres and histological evidence of the inflammatory response elicited by I L-2released from the microspheres i n the rat brain.These microspheres a re used to deliver IL-2,and biodegradable polymer wafers are used to deliver BCNU,directly at the site of an intracranially implanted glioma in the rat.The two agents administered locally show a s ynergistic effect.METHODS:Fischer 344rats challenged intracranially with 9L gliosarcoma received an intracranial implant of either empty microspheres or microspheres containing IL-2(IL-2MS ).Five days later,animals in each group were randomized to receiv e polymer implants loaded with 0,3.8,or 10%BCNU at the tumor site.RESULTS:Animals that received the combination of IL-2MS a nd 3.8%BCNU polymer(median survival,28.5d )or IL-2MS and 10%BCNU polymer(median survival,45.5d )showed significantly improved surv ival compared with animals that rece ived monotherapy with IL-2microsph eres(median survival,24d ),3.8%BCNU polymer(median survival,24d ),or 10%BCNU polymer(median survival,32.5d ).Control animals had a median survival of 18days.The combination of either 3.8or 10%BCNU polymer with IL-2MS resulted in 7and 25%long-term survivors,respectively.CONCLUSION:By showing synergy of IL-2and BCNU in an animal glioma model and using a reproducible synthetic delivery sy stem for each agent (i.e.,one that did not rely on genetic ally engineered cells or viruses),we hope that the combination of local immunotherapy and chemotherapy can take an important step closer to clinical applic ation in patients with malignant brainRhines LD DiMeco F Lawson HC Tyler BM Hanes J Olivi A Brem H 2003癌症2003,22,7:2
