1Biological process of soil improvement in civil engineering:A review显示文摘The concept of using biological process in soil improvement which is known as bio-mediated soil improvement technique has shown greater potential in geotechnical engineering applications in terms of performance and environmental sustainability.This paper presents a review on the soil microorganisms responsible for this process,and factors that affect their metabolic activities and geometric compatibility with the soil particle sizes.Two mechanisms of biomineralization,i.e.biologically controlled and biologically induced mineralization,were also discussed.Environmental and other factors that may be encountered in situ during microbially induced calcite precipitation(MICP) and their influences on the process were identified and presented.Improvements in the engineering properties of soil such as strength/stiffness and permeability as evaluated in some studies were explored.Potential applications of the process in geotechnical engineering and the challenges of field application of the process were identified.Murtala Umar Khairul Anuar Kassim Kenny Tiong Ping Chiet 2016Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2016,8,5:9

3Quantitative analysis of ruminal methanogenic microbial populations in beef cattle divergent in phenotypic residual feed intake(RFI)offered contrasting diets显示文摘Background:Methane(CH_4) emissions in cattle are an undesirable end product of rumen methanogenic fermentative activity as they are associated not only with negative environmental impacts but also with reduced host feed efficiency.The aim of this study was to quantify total and specific rumen microbial methanogenic populations in beef cattle divergently selected for residual feed intake(RFI) while offered(i) a low energy high forage(HF) diet followed by(ii) a high energy low forage(LF) diet.Ruminal fluid was collected from 14 high(H)and 14 low(L) RFI animals across both dietary periods.Quantitative real time PCR(qRT-PCR) analysis was conducted to quantify the abundance of total and specific rumen methanogenic microbes.Spearman correlation analysis was used to investigate the association between the relative abundance of methanogens and animal performance,rumen fermentation variables and diet digestibility.Results:Abundance of methanogens,did not differ between RFI phenotypes.However,relative abundance of total and specific methanogen species was affected(P< 0.05) by diet type,with greater abundance observed while animals were offered the LF compared to the HF diet.Conclusions:These findings suggest that differences in abundance of specific rumen methanogen species may not contribute to variation in CH_4 emissions between efficient and inefficient animals,however dietary manipulation can influence the abundance of total and specific methanogen species.Ciara A Carberry David A Kenny Alan K Kelly Sinead M Waters 2014Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2014,5,4:6
4以慢性咳嗽为主要表现的儿童多发性抽动症的临床诊治显示文摘目的探讨以慢性咳嗽为主要表现的儿童多发性抽动症儿童的临床特征,提高慢性咳嗽中多发性抽动症的诊断准确率,减少误诊率。方法回顾性分析24例以慢性咳嗽为表现的多发性抽动症患儿的临床特点、咳嗽症状积分、视觉模拟评分(VAS)、误诊误治情况,并对其进行治疗和随访分析。结果 24例多发性抽动症患儿咳嗽表现为清咽样10例次(41.7%),干咳14例次(58.3%),咽部不适14例次(58.3%)。抽动表现频繁眨眼21例次,耸肩3例次,面部局部抽动6例次,缩鼻3例次。误诊为咳嗽变异性哮喘者7例,变应性咳嗽5例,肺炎3例,反复呼吸道感染4例,过敏性结膜炎5例。咳嗽症状总积分和VAS评分在治疗前后差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。结论发声性抽动是引起儿童慢性咳嗽的原因之一,常规治疗效果差的慢性咳嗽患儿应排除多发性抽动症可能。Kenny Lan Cheng Wah 于兴梅 郝创利 汤继宏 2014中华肺部疾病杂志(电子版)2014,7,5:6
5Statistical extremes and peak factors in wind-induced vibration of tall buildings显示文摘In the structural design of tall buildings,peak factors have been widely used to predict mean extreme responses of tall buildings under wind excitations.Vanmarcke's peak factor is directly related to an explicit measure of structural reliability against a Gaussian response process.We review the use of this factor for time-variant reliability design by comparing it to the conventional Davenport's peak factor.Based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes,a new closed-form peak factor,the so-called Gamma peak factor,can be obtained for a non-Gaussian resultant response characterized by a Rayleigh distribution process.Using the Gamma peak factor,a combined peak factor method was developed for predicting the expected maximum resultant responses of a building undergoing lateral-torsional vibration.The effects of the standard deviation ratio of two sway components and the inter-component correlation on the evaluation of peak resultant response were also investigated.Utilizing wind tunnel data derived from synchronous multi-pressure measurements,we carried out a wind-induced time history response analysis of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council(CAARC) standard tall building to validate the applicability of the Gamma peak factor to the prediction of the peak resultant acceleration.Results from the building example indicated that the use of the Gamma peak factor enables accurate predictions to be made of the mean extreme resultant acceleration responses for dynamic serviceability performance design of modern tall buildings.Ming-feng HUANG Chun-man CHAN Wen-juan LOU Kenny Chung-Siu KWOK 2012Journal of Zhejiang University-Science A(Applied Physics & Engineering)2012,13,1:4

10白藜芦醇促进氧化应激状态牙髓干细胞在钛种植体表面的增殖及成骨分化显示文摘目的:观察白藜芦醇(RSV)对氧化应激状态人源牙髓干细胞(hDPSCs)在大颗粒喷砂酸蚀表面改性的钛片表面增殖及成骨分化的影响。方法:采用酶消化法体外分离培养hDPSCs,200μmol/L H2O2作用24 h诱导hDPSCs产生氧化应激状态,10μmol/L RSV处理氧化应激状态的hDPSCs 24 h;Alamer Blue法观察hDPSCs增殖活性的改变,扫描电镜观察hDPSCs在钛表面黏附及形态的改变,碱性磷酸酶(ALP)染色观察hDPSCs在钛片表面成骨分化能力的改变。结果:氧化应激状态的hDPSCs增殖能力比正常对照组显著降低,RSV能够显著提高氧化应激状态hDPSCs的增殖能力,并能促进其在钛片表面ALP的表达。结论:RSV能够促进氧化应激状态的hDPSCs在钛片表面增殖及成骨分化。郭英 张静莹 曲哲 张乃馨 MAN Kenny 杨学斌 2017口腔生物医学2017,8,3:2
11Recrystallization and Grain Growth in Austenitic Stainless Steels: a Statistical Approach显示文摘A mathematical model, able to describe the recrystallization and grain growth in metals, has been developed. Taking into account the classical constitutive equations of the Taylor′s theory, the model involves only two free parameters (the dislocation density and the initial number of nuclei). Results from the model are here discussed in comparison with measurements performed on an AISI 304 stainless steel. The predictions of the model are in good agreement with experimental results. As cross check of the model prediction, the independent parameter 'dislocation density'was found to properly correlate to the mechanical properties of the steel and to X-ray diffraction measurements,according to Taylor′s and Debye′s relations respectively.A.Di Schino G.Abbruzzese J.M. 14The effects of Spirulina on anemia and immune function in senior citizens显示文摘Anemia and immunological dysfunction(i.e.immunosenescence)are commonly found in older subjects and nutritional approaches are sought to counteract these phenomena.Spirulina is a filamentous and multicellular bule-green alga capable of reducing inflammation and also manifesting antioxidant effects.We hypothesized that Spirulina may ameliorate anemia and immunosenescence in senior citizens with a history of anemia.We enrolled 40 volunteers of both sexes with an age of 50 years or older who had no history of major chronic diseases.Participants took a Spirulina supplementation for 12 weeks and were administered comprehensive dietary questionnaires to determine their nutritional regimen during the study.Complete cell count(CCC)and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase(IDO)enzyme activity,as a sign of immune function,were determined at baseline and weeks 6 and 12 of supplementation.Thirty study participants completed the entire study and the data obtained were analyzed.Over the 12-week study period,there was a steady increase in average values of mean corpuscular hemoglobin in subjects of both sexes.In addition,mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration also increased in male participants.Older women appeared to benefit more rapidly from Spirulina supplements.Similarly,the majority of subjects manifested increased IDO activity and white blood cell count at 6 and 12 weeks of Spirulina supplementation.Spirulina may ameliorate anemia and immunosenescence in older subjects.We encourage large human studies to determine whether this safe supplement could prove beneficial in randomized clinical trials.Carlo Selmi Patrick SC Leung Laura Fischer Bruce German Chen-Yen Yang Thomas P Kenny Gerry R Cysewski M Eric Gershwin 2011Cellular & Molecular Immunology2011,8,3:2
